The Birth of Christ (Luke)The Birth of John the Baptist (1:57-66)

Elizabeth gives birth to a sonHer family rejoices with herOne the eighth day, when he was to

be circumcised, they were going to name him Zechariah but Elizabeth told them to call him John.

This confused all the relatives because no one in the family was named John.

So they asked Zechariah to be sure.

Zechariah’s mouth was loosened and he blessed God.

All of these things were seen as signs to the people around and they wondered what the Lord would do with the child because they knew the Lord had his hand on him.

Caesar Augustus was taking a census and made everyone return to the town of their linage to register.

Because Joseph was from the line of David he had to go from Galilee to Bethlehem, 80miles

Remember that most people walk 4 miles an hour and Mary was very pregnant.

Since he was betrothed to Mary, a legal engagement, she must go with him.

While there for the register she went into labor. *

Jesus was born in a stable and placed in a manger because there was no room left in the inn.

Mary and Joseph toke Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem because the law required sacrifices to be made to the Lord after the birth of a male.

Either two turtledoves, or two young pigeons

While they were going to the temple a man, named Simeon, came up and toke him into the arms and started blessing God.

The Lord had promised Simeon that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah.

Mary and Joseph marveled at what they heard.

Simeon for tells of Jesus’ ministryGod keeps his promises no matter

what, and sometimes in unusual circumstances.
