All products available from Ripples Winchester www.ripples.ltd.uk

Your Lifestyle: Before you jump straight in think about how you shower and who will be using the shower, these are questions that I ask my clients, so it’s important that you ask yourself them too.

Your options: You might like the look of an overhead shower (hotel-inspired designs are big news after-all) but think about your options, maybe you might also want to incorporate a hand-held shower too, perfect for those of you that don’t want to get your hair wet and is essential for rinsing out the shower afterwards.

Your Water Pressure: Before you consider which shower you’re going to opt for, think about your water pressure. Do you have a gravity fed system, combination boiler or pressurised system? Also consider the size of your water tank, is it large enough to meet your water needs?

Your Future: If this is your forever home then you certainly need to think about future-proofing the shower. You should be thinking about non-slip tiles, grab bars (which you might be shocked to hear can actually be surprisingly stylish) and maybe even a seat area in your shower. To give your seat a more luxurious feel, top with mosaics or stone.

Your space: Create the biggest shower you can out of the amount of space you have, it really is as simple as that. Whether that’s a walk-in shower or a shower enclosure, both can be designed to look exactly how you want them.

Your layout: Think about the layout of the whole room, if you’re going for a walk-in shower then place furniture away from the shower so you minimize how wet items get.

Your approach: To the shower, that is. If you can avoid it, try not to have a step in to your shower instead go for a flush level floor, which can be achieved with a very shallow tray, or a tiled gradient floor.

Your heating: Think about adding under floor heating and wall heating (yes really) to dry up moisture, this will give off a low level heat and heat your tiles. Now when you step out of the shower you won’t fill a chill but thanks to heated floors and walls your room will remain warm. Luxury redefined.

Your storage: Think about creating a shower recess to store your bottles that might normally clutter the floor of your shower. Stylish and practical.

Your lighting: At Ripples we offer customized lighting solutions for your shower, maybe you want lighting that changes at the click of a button, lighting placed on a timer or on a PIR sensor (so that when someone steps in the shower, it automatically comes on), these are all options.

‘Millie’s Mark’ is a new initiative to improve first aid training in early years settings in memory of a 9-month-old girl who died in 2012.

A new initiative to help improve paediatric first aid training in early years settings has been launched today by Education and Childcare Minister Sam Gyimah, in memory of a 9-month-old girl who tragically died in 2012.

Millie Thompson passed away after choking on her lunch while at nursery in Stockport. Since her death, Millie’s parents Joanne and Dan have campaigned for a new ‘gold standard’ certificate to be created in recognition of early years childcare providers that train all their staff in paediatric first aid, going above and beyond the minimum legal requirements.

The quality mark – which has been developed by the Department for Education (DfE), National Day Nursery Association (NDNA) and the Thompsons – will be known as ‘Millie’s Mark’ and will help to give parents assurance that every staff member that cares for their child is trained in these important, life-saving skills.

Speaking at the NDNA annual conference in Milton Keynes, Mr Gyimah will call on nurseries and other early years providers to apply for the quality mark so that as many members of staff are trained in paediatric first aid as possible.

He is expected to say:”As a parent myself, I know there is nothing more important than the safety and security of our children. We trust the staff looking after them will have the right training should anything happen while they are in their care.

That’s why I’m pleased to announce that the Department for Education has awarded the National Day Nursery Association the contract to deliver a voluntary quality mark for nursery providers that have trained all of their staff in paediatric first aid.

I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Millie’s parents, Joanne and Dan, who have campaigned tirelessly in their daughter’s memory to reduce the chances of such tragic accidents happening in future. It is hoped that, over time, this initiative will help ensure that as many staff members as possible are trained in these important, life-saving skills.

I am very much looking forward to continuing to work with NDNA and Millie’s parents, and to seeing the early years providers that go over and above to help keep our children safe.”

Also speaking at the conference, Joanne Thompson is expected to say: “Millie’s Mark is a direct outcome of our campaign as parents, for parents. Following the loss of our darling daughter Millie, we strive to

encourage nurseries to be exemplary in paediatric first aid practice and we are looking forward to seeing the first Millie’s Mark being awarded later in the year.”

NDNA Chief Executive, Purnima Tanuku OBE, said: “We are delighted to have been successful in our bid to develop and deliver Millie’s Mark. We believe passionately that it will make a difference in keeping children safe.

Millie’s Mark will soon be well known to parents all over the country as a clear indicator of the highest standards in keeping children safe from harm.

Seeing that a nursery has achieved Millie’s Mark will help parents make informed decisions when they are choosing childcare and it will be great for nurseries to show how serious they are about providing the best services possible.”

From summer 2016, early years settings in England will be eligible to apply to be accredited with this unique quality mark that will provide parents with the assurance that their child is being cared for by safe and knowledgeable staff. The quality mark will be in addition to the existing statutory requirements for paediatric first aid that all early years providers must meet as a legal requirement.

A total of 10 nurseries, chosen from more than 200 applicants, have been taking part in a pilot to thoroughly test the new standards that settings will be required to demonstrate. These nurseries will be the first to receive Millie’s Mark.

Alongside the launch of Millie’s Mark, the government has today published a response to the consultation on changing the paediatric first aid requirements in the statutory framework for the early years foundation stage (EYFS). The majority of those who responded were in favour of increasing the number of paediatric first aiders in early years settings.

So, from this September [2016], all newly qualified level 2 and level 3 staff must also have either a full paediatric first aid certificate or an emergency paediatric first aid certificate to count in the required staff to child ratios.

This will mean an extra 15,000 staff a year coming into the sector with paediatric first aid training, providing vital reassurance to parents that their children will be well cared for, particularly in an emergency. Paediatric first aid training has also been shown to increase safety awareness, so reducing the likelihood of accidents occurring and staff confidence especially when helping children with complex medical needs.

Winchester PeopleThis month the Winchester Gazette talks to local artists Jenny Muncaster and Rachael Alexander

Do you recognise the faces and names above? Yes - that’s right, both these ladies are the artists from the Colour Factory who painted Winchester’s boring bollards and transformed them into objects of beauty. The bollards have been admired by tourists and residents for years now, as they bring an art exhibition to life within an urban setting so everyone in the community can enjoy it! All the images with the exception of the ‘Community Bollards’ are based on famous paintings and artists as this makes them more familiar to the public thus increasing the surprise element – who would expect to see the Mona Lisa painted on a bollard! Jenny & Rachael first painted the bollards in 2005 and the project has grown over the years with sponsorship from local businesses, private individuals and Winchester City Council. Here we get to know the local artists and find out more about the famous ‘Winchester Bollards’ that are cited within tourists Top Ten things to visit in the city. Where for ART thou? Firstly, we hear that one bollard has gone ‘AWOL’……You’re right one bollard has been damaged and removed meaning the count is now down to 20. This particular one featured an optical design by British artist Bridget Riley – we don’t know as yet whether this will be reinstated or not but let’s hope so. What personally fuelled your passion for Art? Jenny: Even as a child I always had a passion for all things creative, colours, shapes and design always fascinated me. All I ever wanted for birthdays and Christmas was the latest art and craft kit or any art product going. Like all artists I am sure, the need to express this creativity is something that just has to come out. My very earliest memory of seeing a professional artist was when my dad took me to a local craft fair and I was asked to help make a simple print by dipping string in paint, placing it between the pages of a very thick book. I pulled the string free from the pages and on opening the book revealed the most beautiful printed pattern which the paint soaked string had left. It sounds so simple now but seeing this was so exciting at the age of 7 years old, I can honestly say it had an effect on me. Rachael: I come from a very artistic family. Both my parents went to Bath Art Academy in the 1950’s and consequently I grew up surrounded by artists and

art. I was always encouraged rather than discouraged right from an early age to nurture my artistic abilities. I had a very bohemian upbringing and I was never ever allowed painting by numbers! Instead my parents taught me how to develop my own sense of style and design.Have you been involved in any other community art projects in and around Winchester?Jenny: Yes, quite a few. One of the most popular murals can be seen in St Georges Street behind the café ‘Rawberry’. It is very colourful and depicts some of the sights and flavours of Winchester. There are also seven bollards painted with river themes along Union Street which were commissioned by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust for their water vole trail. Rachael: We don’t just paint bollards! Some of our most rewarding projects have been collaborating with local schools and business to provide art workshops for those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do something really creative. Many commissions for one-off artworks come from businesses in and around Winchester. We also produce site specific paintings for offices and hotels as well as schools and hospitals. What inspired you most about the bollard project? Jenny: I love the idea of taking something mundane and making it beautiful, and gaining ownership over our streets. There is often too much street furniture in our historical areas so this is a way of making them unique and ensuring our city doesn’t become homogenised like every other town. Rachael: It is the idea of creating an art gallery on the street and making works of art accessible. The great thing about working on the street is seeing the reaction of the public – it’s so rewarding. I also love choosing a famous painting and the challenge of adapting it to fit a bollard. It is not an easy task to paint a flat image on to a cylinder and make it work all the way around. How does it feel to know your Artwork on the Bollards is one of the Top Ten things for tourists to visit in Winchester? Jenny: I must admit I’m not surprised - they do attract a lot of positive attention from outside of Winchester. Some of the bollards feature in Wikipedia as well as in magazines and national newspapers. We get many calls from other councils around the UK wanting to replicate the idea in their own towns. Rachael: I didn’t know it was! But that’s fantastic. Apparently the Mona Lisa bollard is photographed more than the cathedral! We do conduct Bollard Tours where groups can enjoy a fun and informative insight into the history of the painted Bollards. How long did it take to paint each single bollard? The time varies depending on design but usually between three and five days each although there is also prep of the bollard and design time to add on. We paint them as we would any other painting, the only difference being the type of paint, and we use a variety of artists brushes. The make of bollards is the Cannon 500 and they weigh approx. 69kg.How are the bollards maintained? The bollards are spruced up approximately every two years or when Winchester City Council has the budget for them – in fact I was out in The Square in June. They are painted in situ weather permitting, although when The Square was

completely refurbished a few years ago they were removed and given to us to paint off site – much easier! The paint used is a rust eating metal paint as the bollards are cast iron and they are finished with an anti-graffiti varnish. In the future, might there be any additions or art projects elsewhere in Winchester? We are hoping that sponsors may continue to support the bollard project and commission their own painted bollards which we would be delighted to undertake. We are also always keen to work on any art projects in Winchester that enrich the city whether it be a painted hoarding, artwork for areas of development and regeneration. Please do get in touch with us if you would like help with ideas for creative projects or art workshops for your team.Would any future projects mainly depend upon funding and Winchester City Council before it could come to fruition? Yes, most projects need funding from a source of one kind or another whether it be council sponsorship or private funding. We are always looking for patrons and benefactors to help fund the creation of artworks for a more enriching environment. How do local businesses find out about sponsoring a bollard or any other projects? In the first instance please call or email either Rachael or Jenny at The Colour Factory Studios; [email protected] Tel 01962 870789 We would be delighted to talk to you. BARTLEY

BARTLEY

Sponsorship NewsRace season started in the spring for the 2 BMW race drivers sponsored by Bartley this season. Stu Waite is competing in the Toyo Tires Racing Saloons series in a BMW E36 M3 and Aaron Morgan is competing in the BMW Compact Cup Championship in a BMW Compact, using only hand controls due to being paralysed after a motocross accident in 2009.

We have been lucky enough to interview both of them this month.

Stu said “The season has been going reasonably well with 3 wins so far. The team and I have been developing the car and experimenting with new dampers and spring rates. We are trying new things all the time and working out what works and what doesn't. We have had a couple of frustrating races where twice I have been taken out while leading but the one thing I'm stronger than anyone is the starts. Almost every race I have got into the lead immediately, even when starting in 4th on the grid. I currently have 3 wins to Nigel Innes’ 4 wins. I am looking forward to the last 6 races and hoping to move the car forward and gain a few more wins. Thank as always to Bartley BMW Specialists for their continued support”.

Aaron said “So far I have made a great start to the compact cup championship, with the much appreciated sponsorship from Bartley BMW, building on my progress from 2015. I have been slightly hampered this far by some bad starts and an unforeseen clutch issue at Rockingham. I am feeling more confident in the car this season and my pace in testing has been very good. For the rest of this season my focus is working on my starts and transferring my testing pace through into races. Robin [Welsh of RAW Motorsport at Thruxton] and I have been working on a new clutch mechanism which we are confident will help my starts. I'm excited for the rest of the season!”

All work carried out by Bartley is done to BMW specifications by BMW trained technicians. All parts supplied by Bartley and all labour carried out by Bartley come with full warranty for customer peace of mind. Bartley offer a while you wait service by

prior arrangement. There is a café on site with Wi-Fi and Bartley offer FREE automatic and manual courtesy vehicles.

Bartley is located close to the New Forest, on the outskirts of Totton, just a 5 minute drive from junction 2 or 3 of the M27 and also benefits from easy access to Spicers Hill on the A35.

Health, Beauty & WellbeingWinchester GP - Stay safe in the sun

Overexposure to sunlight is an important and avoidable cause of skin cancer, certain eye diseases, such as cataracts, and premature ageing/wrinkles. Yet studies have shown that, we are, as a population, pretty bad at protecting ourselves from the sun.

Sun care slip up: We get caught outOverexposure doesn’t just happen to die-hard sunbathers and outdoor workers. Those who spend little time outdoors and then experience short, intense bursts of sun- whether on holiday, weekends away or even during a lunchbreak are equally at risk. Thinking ahead is the order of the day; We strongly recommend applying your sunscreen first thing in the morning before getting dressed. Many people only get around to applying it once the sun is starting to ‘hot up’ in the late morning or around midday by which time if you are out and about in the garden or at the beach the skin may already have been damaged. Sunscreen should then be reapplied later in the day particularly if you have a fair skin. And don’t forget a hat or sunglasses as instant and faff-free UV blocking measures.

Sun care myth: A tan protects my skinYes, tanning is the skin’s attempt to protect itself against further sun exposure, but it’s not that effective- certainly nothing compared to sun creams or clothing. A tan is a sign of skin damage. This damage far outweighs the marginal protective effect.

Sun care myth: I need to deliberately sunbathe to get enough vitamin DThis is not the case. Between March and October, most people can make sufficient vitamin D by going out for short periods and leaving only areas of skin that are often exposed uncovered (e.g. forearms, hands or

lower legs). Current guidance for treating Vitamin D deficiency (which is surprisingly common) is to emphasise dietary sources, including supplements where necessary. Speak to your doctor for advice.

Sun cream Commandments1. Aim HIGH for your SPF. We recommend

the use of a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and 5 star UVA rating.

2. Use way more than you think you need!

Most people do not apply sunscreen thickly enough or frequently enough. The amount of sunscreen needed for the body of an average adult to achieve the stated SPF is around 35 ml - almost 3 tablespoons!

‘ ……….she had moments like this when she wanted to run instead of walk, to take dancing steps on and off the pavement, to bowl a hoop, to throw something up in the air and catch it again, or to stand still and laugh at …nothing. – Katherine Mansfield, ‘Bliss’.

When is the last time you experienced joy? This utmost of high emotion which balances out our low moments when we may feel despair. People call it the ‘highs and lows’ but do we have enough ‘highs’ to balance our lows? It is normal to feel low at times. Life cannot be plain sailing all the time but do we just get used to ‘getting on’ with our life.

We are in the middle of summer with the longer days, the anticipation of a holiday perhaps, the opportunity to break out of our routine. Looking back to the past months or even further back to last summer can you pinpoint a moment of joy? It might have been a deep feeling of contentment, a peace that was accompanied by a joyful acknowledgement of something or someone. A moment that brought a wide smile or a large laugh or maybe even shedding tears of joy?

If joy is something you struggle to experience or have not experienced in a long while then what is getting in the way? It might be that discussing this with someone close might help you to acknowledge the reasons for this and to try to make changes within your life. But if you feel that there are more lows than highs in your life or that you are just struggling to keep afloat with your emotions and the things that are going on around you, then perhaps taking some time to talk to a trained and experienced counsellor may help.

Hair RemovalUnwanted hair can be removed from all parts of the male/female body, including legs, chin, upper lip, bikini line, underarm, back and chest. Hair must be darker than the skin for treatment to be effective.

Skin RejuvenationMany skin conditions can be successfully treated including:

• Vascular Lesions – Thread Veins, Spider Naevi, Cherry Angiomas, Rosacea

• Pigmented Lesions – Age spots, Acne scarring, Pigmentation

• Other conditions which may be treated including – Acne, Skin Texture, Fine Lines

• This list is not exhaustive (please call for free advice)

ADVANCED ELECTROLYSIS USING HIGH FREQUENCYAdvanced electrolysis uses a heat source to treat suitable skin conditions.

Conditions that may be treated:

• Skin tags

Skin tags are pedunculated papules consisting of normal skin with a loose ‘neck’ connecting it to the skin. They may be pigmented or non-pigmented often occurring in areas of friction. They can be hereditary and may also occur during pregnancy. There is an increased occurrence with age but they can also be caused by the Human Papilloma Virus.

• Senile warts otherwise known as Seborrhoeic Keratosis

Seborrhoeic Keratosis are a benign growth of the skin cells. They eventually develop into scaly like lesions with a ‘stuck on’ appearance and can be from 2mm to 2cm. The colour and shape can vary but they are mainly found on the head, face, neck and trunk of individuals over the age of 40.

• Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra – DPN

DPN are histologically identical to senile warts and are smooth, flat, dome shaped lesions that mainly occur on individuals with coloured skin. They can be hereditary.

• Warts

Warts are benign growths caused by a viral infection of the skin cells. The virus causes thickening of the skin with spaces and scaling. Central capillaries can be viewed as black dots.

• Milia

Milia are tiny cysts that contain keratin and sebum, an oily deposit. The exact cause is unknown but they are possibly related to diet. Milia most commonly occur over upper cheeks and beneath the eyes but can occur anywhere on the body. They are often no larger than a pinhead. They can appear as an isolated nodule or in clusters.

• Syringoma

These are a benign tumor of the sweat gland and look like milia but are soft. They can occur from adolescence onwards and are usually found in multiples around the eyes.

• Sebaceous Hyperplasia

These are enlarged or blocked sebaceous glands which can be yellowish or whitish in colour. Tiny blood vessels may be visible. They occur most commonly on the face but may occur anywhere.

• Campbell De Morgan Spot / Cherry Angioma

These are purple/red coloured lesions with a domed, smooth surface and up to 5mm in diameter. They are due to a proliferation in the capillaries and occur mainly on the trunk of individuals. Often they appear over several months.

• Spider Naevus

These have a central capillary from which fine capillaries radiate, resembling the legs of a spider – hence the name spider naevus. The central body or capillary is often raised and in the majority of cases supplies the blood for the radiating capillaries. Spider naevi can occur as a result of mechanical injury.

Dermal & Subcutaneous Conditions

• Xanthomata

These are lipid laden (fat) deposits and appear as yellowish papules, plaques and nodules. Plaques commonly found around and on the eyelids are called Xanthelasmas. Other Xanthomata’s may appear as firm yellow nodules.

MICRODERMABRASIONMicrodermabrasion is a popular, safe and effective way of exfoliating the skin mechanically whilst stimulating cellular activity in the lower layers of the skin.

It can be used to noticeably, improve the appearance of the following conditions:-

• superficial scarring• fine lines• wrinkles• pigmentation problems• uneven skin tones• a dull, lifeless, sun-damaged complexion• acne• blocked pores

Eat to lose weight

The majority of the time when you’re having a problem losing weight, it’s not because you aren’t making good food choices. The reason why your weight loss has stagnated is because you’re probably not eating enough calories to lose weight.

When most people start dieting, they slash their calories and add a large amount of exercise to their daily routine. That’s fine, but they usually cut their calories way too low. Add in the extra exercise, and all of a sudden you have an extreme calorie deficit that is working against you.

Not eating enough calories causes many metabolic changes. Your body is a smart machine and senses a large decrease in dietary energy. Your large calorie deficit might work for a few days or even weeks, but eventually your body will wake up and sound alarms that it needs to conserve energy.

It doesn’t want to just waste away. It needs that energy (fat) to survive. So, what does your body do when it senses prolonged energy restriction?

• Slows down thyroid production – Your thyroid is responsible for fat, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism, amongst other things. Your body has the ability to slow down thyroid output in an effort to maintain energy balance.

• Decreases muscle mass – Muscle is highly calorie intensive to maintain. In a prolonged extreme calorie deficit, it is one of the first things that your body looks to get rid of, especially if you’re not providing a stimulus to keep it. Your body needs the fat, wants the fat, and the muscle can be spared. It breaks down the muscle tissue and uses it for energy. Because it is a more sustaining energy source, it’s the first to go.

• Lowers testosterone levels – An important hormone for men and

and weight loss products.

Josh

women, testosterone is just one of many hormones that are affected with severe calorie restriction. Testosterone is anabolic to muscle tissue. Without it, it becomes that much harder to maintain, let alone put on muscle mass.

• Decreases leptin levels – Leptin is one of many energy regulating hormones. More importantly, it’s a “hunger” hormone that tells you whether to eat or not. High Leptin levels signal that it’s OK to stop eating, while low Leptin levels are a signal to eat more. Because of this, leptin levels decrease in calorie restricted environments.

• Decreases energy levels – Calories equate to energy. There are many physical actions your body takes when you’re not eating enough calories,

but there are also some mental ones. Neurotransmitter production is limited, which can lead to a lack of motivation. It’s your body’s way of telling you to “slow down” – conserve your energy.

So, how many calories should you be eating?Your goal should be to eat as many calories as possible and still lose weight. You always want to start high and then come down with your calorie intake. It’s much easier to do this than come up in calories after your weight loss has stalled and you’ve lost all your motivation. How many calories you should eat isn’t the same for everyone and there is no perfect number. Each person’s metabolism is different. Someone who’s under-eaten their entire life and is sedentary will need far fewer calories than the person who exercises a lot and has an active job.

To find your effective calorie intake you need to look for a good Calorie Calculator (look online, or if you have a smart phone Android and Apple have some good apps in their “stores”)

The problem is most people want the weight gone, and they want it gone now. Weight loss is a patience game. It takes time and consistency to make it work.

Losing .5-1kg of your body mass each week is the most I would aim for. At this pace, it will ensure that the majority of your weight loss is coming from stored body fat instead of muscle. You will also give yourself the best chance to build muscle while you lose fat, which is what you should be striving to do.

And then there are the intangibles to eating higher calories – reduced hunger and cravings, improved mood, additional nutrients, and improved adherence to your plan. After all, what’s the point in losing 5 pounds in 2 weeks if that’s as

long as you can sustain the large calorie deficit you’re in?

So if your progress has stalled, but you think you’re eating the right foods and exercising intensely, more than likely your problem is that you’re not eating enough calories to lose weight. Try raising your calories some, get in as many nutrients as possible, and your weight loss will start moving forward again.

Try a little Twist on the Traditional!Wearing “something old” represents the bride’s past, “something new” is looking forward to future as a couple, “something borrowed” usually from another couple who have been happily married, this is thought to bring you many years together and “something blue” fidelity and love between each other, and the last line, a silver sixpence in her shoe.

Old y Why not make a bouquet from old brooches? You

could add a wedding picture (possibly borrowed) of your parents surrounded by a vintage mini photo frame.

y If someone you love cannot be with you on this memorable day in your life, you could add a black and white photo of a relative in an old pocket watch or locket to the bouquet stem, a lovely sentimental way to remember them.

hot! If it is a bit plain, you can decorate it to glitz it up! y Use antique lace, embroidery and/or tablecloths to

make several bespoke items from veils, train, garter, stockings, petticoats to boleros.

New y Buy yourself a signature clutch and shoes that can be

used after your wedding. y Buy lace or bead foot jewellery, so they still look special

as you take your shoes off to dance late in the evening! y Are Tiaras not for you? Look into forehead or hand

jewellery instead! y Matching tattoos, it could be his and hers, a tiny heart

or infinity symbol each or a different symbol or picture that can only be seen if you put your hands together. Of course not everyone wants to have one so maybe have a temporary tattoo using semi-permanent pens for the day or a new piercing - maybe your Tragus and you could add a blue stud (something new and blue in one!)

y Buy a beautifully embroidered cloth(s), possibly a handkerchief. You may like to pay to have a beautiful poem sewn onto it, then give to your parents after the ceremony.

Borrowed y Wear traditional vintage Victorian style lace cuffs and

borrow two brooches one to go on the top of each wrist.

y Borrow a family member’s graduation flower corsage.

y Borrow your Dad’s watch and/or decorative tie to place around bouquet stem (taking care due to possible moisture).

y Borrow some beads to match your colour themes and add around the bouquet. 5. Borrow a broach from a friend and fit it into your hair with hair clips.

Blue y Go to a farrier and ask for an old shiny horseshoe,

thread blue ribbon in the holes or cover with blue ribbon with a handle at the top. Pop on some decorations to match your theme, butterflies, flowers, glitz, broaches and you’ve got a good luck symbol to carry as you walk up the aisle.

y Use blue charms to make an infinity sign instead of a bow on the back of the wedding dress or less obvious use as part of the zip in the place of the ‘puller’ or fastening and do the same on any clutch bag you have. Or you could stick a blue charm to the heels of your shoes.

y Have a blue infinity sign on the ring finger as part of your manicure as well as a nail gem or two!

y Personalise a length of blue ribbon with a sharpie pen with your monograms plus the date (dry and set as per instructions on the internet) - sew onto the underside of the hem of your wedding dress or simply tie around your wrist.

y If you want to rock the punk chic, why not add some blue chalk colouring to your hair!

Sixpences y Make sixpences into buttons by asking a key smith

St Swithun’s Junior School swimmers had an extremely successful morning at the Winchester Primary Schools’ Swimming Gala, on Friday 10 June. The Year 6 girls won both their events and the Year 4 girls secured a second and fourth place in their race.

24 schools took part in the girls’ relay races, with 30 girls in the Year 4 individual freestyle event. Heats were held with the top six teams and top six individuals qualifying for the finals.

The St Swithun’s Year 6 relay team (Agnes Bracey-Davis, Olivia Busher, Mia Clark and Eleanor Holmes) won both the medley relay and freestyle relay, attaining a new school record in the medley.

Isabella Bruce and Hermione Murray swam extremely well in the Year 4 freestyle heats and both qualified for the final. In the final, Izzy came second and Hermione was fourth.

The gala was organised by the Winchester City Penguins Swimming Club and held at the River Park Leisure Centre.

Learning to cook is an important life skill that at All Saints C of E Primary School in Winchester starts at a very young age. In reception the 4 year olds start in their outdoor mud kitchen stirring and mixing and creating wonderful sounding recipes. Learning to cook through play is a great beginning. The mud recipes might all look the same but to the children they are pancakes, curries and ice cream! From then on children at All Saints are lucky because they all get food education lessons as part of their curriculum run by Min Raisman from fit2cook food education.

Fit2cook has been working at All Saints C of E Primary School for ten years now, long before cooking became compulsory in the curriculum. Teaching children the basic cookery skills and giving them confidence to be adventurous in their tastes is what the fit2cook workshops are all about.

“fit2cook runs a fantastic cooking programme for us based around the new Primary Curriculum. We are always impressed by the way Min effectively instils in our children a love of cooking, an understanding of where food comes from and the importance of a healthy and varied diet.” Nicky Osborne, Headteacher, All Saints C of E Primary School, Winchester

Over the years the children have learnt to cook cheese and herb tarts using Wichester City Mill flour and Lyburn cheese, pea and potato samosas, duck pancakes, home-made pizzas, curry and flatbreads and courgette muffins to name but a few. Min Raisman from fit2cook food education explains:

“Children love to cook and are often amazed at how easy it is to make well known dishes from scratch. We always make it good fun but if we can teach them how to eat well, a bit about the environment and recycling and different food customs then it adds to their learning and becomes real food education. And it’s often the less academic children that shine in the kitchen, cooking gives them a real confidence boost”

Fit2cook food education works with primary schools across Hampshire and also runs the popular Create & Cook Competition for secondary schools which celebrates local food and nurtures young talent. To find out more www.fit2cook.co.uk or @createcookcomp on Twitter.

University of Winchester leads archaeological excavations to uncover the New Forest’s past

A new archaeological project is underway in the New Forest to enable a team from the University of Winchester to shed light on the medieval landscape of the National Park. The excavations in Denny Inclosure – directed by Dr Paul Everill from the University’s Department of Archaeology in collaboration with the New Forest National Park Authority – are focused on the remains of a medieval forester’s lodge. A number of hunting lodges were constructed in the New Forest by order of King Edward III in the mid-fourteenth century. The site at Denny – a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law – shares a number of similarities with known royal sites and may indicate that they were initially foresters’ lodges before being converted to accommodate the king during his hunting trips. The reign of King Edward III is the epitome of the English age of chivalry, when he and his knights would return from war and engage in hunts that fostered the martial spirit. The current project represents a new collaboration between archaeologists at the University of Winchester and the New Forest National Park Authority, and plans to encompass a number of related sites over the next few years. It builds on the historic links between Winchester, as the ancient capital of England, and the New Forest. The New Forest National Park Authority is supporting the excavations with advice and volunteer time. They hope to shine light on this fascinating period of the New Forest’s past, encouraging more people to appreciate the area’s heritage and care for its special landscape. Dr Everill, Senior Lecturer in Applied Archaeological Techniques, said: “Working to help tell the story of the New Forest is such a fantastic local opportunity and provides a superb training experience for our students, especially for those targeting graduate employment in British archaeology. “This excavation is revealing more about the rich history of the New Forest, and the acidic, sandy soil at the site presents a number of challenges. Some archaeological materials do not survive well in this soil, but we have already defined the extent of the enclosing bank and ditch and now hope to retrieve evidence for the date of construction. “We have been fortunate to work closely with our colleagues in the National Park throughout this process, and are grateful for the specialist support and advice we have received.” Frank Green, New Forest National Park Authority Archaeologist, said: “Working closely with our archaeological colleagues from the University of Winchester is an exciting opportunity to further our knowledge of this part of the New Forest’s past. “The excavation on the site at Denny Wait provides a rare opportunity to find new evidence on lodges as the last archaeological excavation on this type of site was a hundred years ago. Modern scientific dating techniques and the ability to recover information about the site’s use can now provide us with a much better understanding and the potential for more accurate dating of the site. “We hope this will lead to similar work on other lodge sites as part of a much larger project that will expand our knowledge of potential Royal hunting sites from the medieval period.” In addition to the research goals, the excavation has already provided an opportunity for a group of school children participating in the Jon Egging Trust’s Blue Skies Programme to gain experience of archaeology and to develop teamwork skills. It allowed the children to build on class-based skills learnt at the University of Winchester a fortnight earlier. Dr Everill’s team has been granted permission by Historic England, Natural England and the Forestry Commission excavations continued at the site until 17 June.

clear and distinct footpath sign, which takes us left along the right hand edge beside the hedge until the field opens out at the brow of a hill.

The footpath keeps just to the left of the tree line as the path visibly threads its way downhill through some generous grassland.

At the bottom of the hill we need to squeeze through the hedge and footpath sign onto the Romsey to Lockerley Road, turning right for about 400 metres until Mount Farm (photo 3) where we turn right up the lane towards the farm. At the top of the lane yellow footpath arrows take us over two stiles and over a damp and sometimes muddy field, turning right after the second barrier to join a gravel track.

This track veers left and gradually fades out as the path keeps us on the far left of the open field and we continue up to the far corner where, hidden in the bushes, is a ditch (with a rustic bridge crossing) plus a large gate sporting a yellow path arrow.

As we walk through this gate and beside a stream we are traversing the outer edge of a private garden – as becomes obvious once we clear the second gate and join Dundridge Road and turning right to the village of Dundridge some 400 metres away. On the way we pass the Mill Arms (photo 4) where we turn immediately right behind the pub, up the slope and into the woods following the slight right fork.

The next 800 metres walking provides a pleasant stretch along a switchback trail that comes to a halt at a stile, that we cross and turn left tracing the edge of a vast set of fields. By continuing round we move gently upwards as the path neatly divides two fields while we need to walk all the way up to a woodland corner with a distinct footpath sign; a section that we passed much earlier in this outing.

We are now retracing our steps, by turning left across the field, once again through the gate into the wildlife reserve, out across the road, and down the slope to pick up the short section of Test Way that begun the walk.

At the gate we turn left, cross the railway level crossing and turn back into Kimbridge Farm Shop and that most welcoming sign for refreshment.

This month the walk returns to the River Test with the suggested start

point at Kimbridge Farm Shop, Kimbridge Lane, Romsey, SO51 0LE (also Annie’s Tea Rooms) (photo 1). This proves to be a popular start point for many walkers, with the added bonus of ready refreshments at the finish. It is a good long 5 mile walk that should take around 80 to 90 minutes, depending on your speed..

Once safely parked up, we turn right out of the drive onto Kimbridge Lane, across a level crossing (for the Romsey to Salisbury line) and immediately right following the ‘Test Way’ sign (photo 2). This takes us up a wide track and gentle slope upwards for around 400 metres up to a crossroads. At this point we leave the Test Way and go straight on up to a stile – over this and onwards past a big house and garden.

We have to halt at a busy road that we cross carefully, moving into a wildlife

reserve, converted from a gravel pit some years ago and now containing a large lake and plenty of birdlife around it. Climbing the shingle path up and out of the reserve we pass over a stile and directly across the next field. The farmer leaves a clear track for walkers to use so damage to crops does not occur, taking us up to a woodland corner with a very distinct footpath sign to the right of these woods taking us along the left hand edge of the field.

Only 200 metres down to the next corner we take a right turn across another field, once again a track is left and we are heading towards another

Volunteers enjoy well deserved tea party THE work done by volunteers across Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was celebrated during a series of tea parties. The events, which were held to coincide with Volunteers’ Week 2016, took place at all three hospitals run by the trust, with the hard-working volunteers enjoying a well-earned cup of tea and slice of cake. Volunteers help us care for patients in a variety of ways, including driving them to and from appointments, helping staff on wards, helping at mealtimes, talking to and entertaining patients, answering phones, helping with back office functions and even recruiting and training new volunteers. Iona Jewitt, who is 20, attended the party at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, in Winchester. She has been working as a dementia volunteer at the hospital for the last year, combining her voluntary work with her final year studying psychology at the University of Winchester. She said: “Being a dementia volunteer is great fun because it’s all about spending time with the patients. You just chat with them, or help them with things like crosswords and wordsearches, things that the nurses don’t often get time to do. “I really enjoy it. I really like helping people and the patients really appreciate it, which makes it so rewarding. It even inspired my dissertation at university, which I did on the stigmas around dementia.” Iona was so inspired by her time as a volunteer that she applied for a job at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, where she is now employed as an activities co-ordinator, working with elderly patients. “I’m enjoying the job and I think that having done the volunteering, it makes it easier for me to interact with the patients. I know how to approach them. I would really encourage other people to volunteer at the trust. It’s a really good programme.” Sophie Knox started volunteering in 2013, working on D4 and the Firs at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. Last year, she was offered an apprenticeship by the trust and she is now a housekeeping assistant in the Firs. She said: “I like working with older people and my duties as a volunteer included getting supplies from the shop for patients, handing out lunches and helping to feed patients. “I’m really enjoying my job and the most enjoyable part of is chatting to patients and listening to their stories.” Jane Davies, volunteer manager, added: “We have wonderful support from a very loyal and dedicated group of people who donate their time to helping us care for patients. Their support is appreciated by everyone who comes into contact with them.” To find out more about volunteering opportunities at Hampshire Hospitals, visitwww.hampshirehospitals.nhs.uk/work-with-us/volunteers-and-work-experience.

Transport and Professional Services, added: Achieving this award is an important part of our efforts to make Winchester a great place to live, work and visit for everybody, not just a few. We remain one of the most attractive cities in the region both for leisure visitors and businesspeople. Our easy to access car parks are a key driver in being recognised as a city that is ‘open for business’ all year round.

Dave Metcalf, British Parking Association Area Manager, concluded: “I am delighted that Winchester City Council has achieved the Disabled Parking Accreditation at four sites. Disabled Motoring UK’s report into disabled parking facilities across the UK showed that many car parks failed to make provision for disabled drivers. There is a designated DPA website where disabled people can search for a car park with the accreditation and it’s great that disabled motorists in and around Winchester can park with ease.

Community News

Winchester City Council is the first local authority in the south to receive the Disabled Parking Accreditation at 4 car parks: Jewry Street, Middle Brook Street, Tower Street and South Winchester Park and Ride. To qualify, car parks must have accessible bays that meet British standards, which are at least 2.4 metres by 4.8 metres with a 1.2 metre safety or transition zone marked with cross patterned stripes along one side of the bay. Signage must give clear information and instructions for the use of a building and there should be level access between pedestrian entrances/exits and parking bays. Lifts or ramps must be provided where levels are not even. Lighting, payment machines and alternative payment methods also form part of the criteria as well as concessions, where appropriate, to allow disabled people additional time. Richard Hein, Head of Parking Services at Winchester City Council, said: It’s fantastic that Winchester’s car parks have achieved this accreditation which reflects our commitment to providing high levels of customer service to all, and our ongoing investment in our car park stock. Naomi House & Jacksplace has won a major local award. The charity was presented with the Wilkins Kennedy Excellence in Innovation Award at the Winchester Business Excellence Awards.

Naomi House & Jacksplace Chief Executive, mark Smith, and New Business Fundraiser, Lisa Congdon picked up the award at a packed awards event held in Winchester Guildhall. The event was attended by hundreds of Winchester businesses and local organisations.

Jon Noble, Audit Director for Wilkins Kennedy led the judging of the Excellence in Innovation category. He said: “Well done to you all at Naomi House & Jacksplace on a really well deserved award. The standard of entries was very high and from really different and diverse businesses which made the judging very difficult. However we were blown away with the facilities that you have developed in your new hospice and the level of thought and detail that has gone into the project. It is clear that these facilities will enrich the lives of the children that use the facility and give much needed support and assistance to the families involved. A very special place indeed.”

Naomi House & Jacksplace’s Marketing Manager, Keith Wilson, said: “Naomi House & Jacksplace is in an exciting period of growth, and we are caring for more children, young adults and families than ever before. Our growth is fuelled by innovation and a desire to provide an increasingly comprehensive service to families. Winning this award is wonderful recognition of the ingenuity and hard work our teams continue to put in 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

Naomi House & Jacksplace rewarded for excellenceIn recent years, Naomi House & Jacksplace has launched a newly refurbished children’s hospice, expanded community services and recruited a number of highly skilled medical professionals to ensure families receive the high standard of care they need at the time and place that they need it.

Earlier this year the charity was awarded Investor in People status and received an ‘Outstanding’ Care Quality Commission inspection report.

is clear that the knock-on effect of poor access to healthcare on physical and mental health, and then on employment and the economy, quality of life and mortality, leads us to request positive action now.”

Winchester mum Kathryn Griffith, from local organisation The Playhouse Foundation, was also able to attend the Westminster event. She said:”The Playhouse Foundation was delighted to attend the event and hear more about the recommendations the Commission has made on improving access to healthcare for those on the autistic spectrum.

As a Winchester-based charity supporting children with autism across Hampshire, we are only too aware of the barriers that many families face and the role of the Commission in raising these issues is critical. We are very grateful to Steve for facilitating our engagement with the Commission and we look forward to exploring the ways in which we might be able to input to their future work.
