The Curate Question
St. John’s has a rich history of raising up curates for the purpose of the priestly ministry. Curates are newly ordained priests who come straight from seminary to serve for three to five years in a church. Many of you can remember fondly some of the fine curates that have shared in the ministry of word and sacrament with the rector.
Since I started here at St. John’s a few months ago, I’ve gotten the question, “Are we getting a curate?” The answer is a resounding yes! I, along with the wardens and vestry, am committed to finding the right priest to come and serve at St. John’s. In fact, we agree that it’s necessary to have a second priest. I had originally hoped that we would be able to fill the position with a candidate from the seminary class graduating this spring. We even took the opportunity to speak to a few potential priests. Ultimately, it has come down to needing to envision more clearly what the curate’s role at St. John’s should be, what the financial reality of having a curate is, and taking the time to do what is right for us and right for our next curate.
Here’s what I need from you: prayer. Pray for who our next curate is. We don’t know who that person is, but perhaps through prayer and discernment we will be led to who is truly called to St. John’s. I’d also like to hear what qualities you think we should have in a curate. While this isn’t the same as a rector search (which you know something about), it is important to have some understanding of what we need from a second priest. By putting in the hard work of discerning and looking, by being deliberate about whom we are looking to call, we should be able to have a brand new curate in the late spring or early summer of 2016.
We know that God is doing good things here at St. John’s and we are blessed with the means and ability to help nurture a new priest and allow him or her to grow in the role of an ordained minister. We do important work for the church at large in doing so. We will have the opportunity to feed and foster a new priest, perhaps discovering that it is we who are being fed and fostered through their call to serve our Lord.
God’s Peace,
Fr. Joe Greene+

GOOD NEWSCongratulations to Paul Schwendener (photo), executive director of the PBS series, All-Star Orchestra, which took home its 3rd Emmy on May 2 at the 58th Annual New York Emmy Awards. “What Makes a Masterpiece,” a program
featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Philip Glass’s Harmonium Mountain, won in the category, Special Event Coverage (Other than News and Sports). The program is part of the multi-program classical music series featuring top musicians from across the country performing major symphonic masterpieces and works from leading contemporary American composers. The series premiered nationwide on public television in September 2013. It aims to expose classical music to a broader audience while keeping the listening experience informative and accessible. The All-Star Orchestra (http://bit.ly/1kPmtLJ) has also launched a music education program in partnership with the Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org), the free educational website that reaches 15 million students and 500,000 teachers each month in 200 countries. The collaboration brings, for the first time, classical music to a website that teaches Math, Science, Economics, Humanities and other subjects. Paul, congrats again your Emmy!
Continuing with the recent trend of St. John’s parishioners appearing in the local magazine, Larchmont Living, John Bradley and Janet O’Connell, current board members of At Home on the Sound, were mentioned in the feature article about the non-profit organization that enhances the lives of residents ages 60+ in the Larchmont/Mamaroneck area. Also mentioned in the magazine were Sarah and Emily Hofstetter, who were in this month’s “Get to Know Your Larchmont Althetes” column. Sarah is a rowing coxswain for the Pelham Community Rowing Association, and Emily plays lacrosse for the Topside Snipers and Mamaroneck Youth Lacrosse, and soccer for the Westchester Soccer Club. Larchmont Living Magazine continues to make known how amazing a parish we have.

Debra Quintana’s family is celebrating two big graduations this spring: daughter Alexandra is graduating from SUNY Binghamton with a degree in business; and son, Bret, is graduating from Mamaroneck High School. Congratulations to you and your whole family, Debra!
Ted and Donna Bellis are very proud of daughter, Julia, who is graduating from Trinity College with a double major in Psychology and Media Arts. Julia is planning to pursue the field of Abnormal Psychology. Congratulations, Julia!
Several paintings created by Perry Meigs have been selected to be in a special exhibition at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art in New Paltz this summer. “The Stories We Tell: Hudson Valley Artists 2015” focuses on the narrative form of contemporary art and examines how stories shape our experience and our understanding of the world. Instinctively, we are all storytellers merging fiction with non-fiction and conflating the real with the imagined. The exhibit will run from June 20-November 8 in the Alice and Horace Chandler and North Galleries. Congratulations, Perry! One of Perry’s paintings is featured on the museum’s website (see below).
If you have good news about a family member or friend at St. John’s you would like to share in the next issue of Chimes, please email the details to Amy Jaswal ([email protected]).
