Cinco de Mayo really celebrates the victory that Mexico had against France. On the 5 th of May,1861, 6,000 French soldiers faced only 2,000 Mexican troops. By evening, France had lost 500 soldiers and retreated; less than 100 of the Mexican soldiers were lost in battle. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is mainly observed in the state of Puebla. Other parts of the country also celebrate this holiday. The traditions may include: re- creations of the battle of Puebla, military parades and many other festive events. Cinco de Mayo, although a holiday, is much like any other day--offices, banks and stores stay open. Mexican culture and heritage is celebrated here in the United States during Cinco de Mayo, espe- cially in places with a large population of people with Mexican roots. Many places celebrate the cul- ture with parades, mariachi music, and many of Mexico’s traditional foods. The biggest festivals are mainly held in Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston, Texas. We even have events for Cinco de Mayo here in San Antonio, so if you want to have fun and eat some good food, I encourage you to go to one of our festivals.

You’re getting a movie, Charlie Brown By: Tyrell

It was the start of a plain boring year,

October 2nd 1950, when a round headed boy took the world by storm. Yes, I’m talking about the world’s favorite blockhead, Charlie Brown, and the rest of the gang.

Peanuts has been one of America’s crown jewels that Charles M. Schulz added to our childhood. From Sunday comics to holiday specials, Schulz has given us the joy of laugh-ter. Now Blue Sky Animation Studio, the

If you haven’t heard yet, Peanuts is returning to us on the big screen, but not like we normally see them. Now they are being animated in 3D CGI development (Computer Generated Imagery). Captain America 2: The Winter Solider By: Michael

Many people would agree that Captain America is not the most interesting comic book character in the Avengers, but he may be the most complex character of the Avengers! To start off my review of Captain America 2: The Winter Solider, I am going to give you some infor-mation on the movie. Captain America 2 is the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. The total budget to make the movie was $170 million and now the total box office money they have earned is $302,123,721. So with this much of a budget, can they make a great superhero movie that can grab the intention of main stream audiences? Wow, just wow, this movie exceeded my expectations. Captain America 2: The Winter Solider has everything you would want in a movie. The action scenes were really intense and epic. Surprising-ly, it had some comedy and romance throughout this movie. Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson had good symmetry, and worked well together. I have to say, without Scarlett Johansson, the mov-ie wouldn’t be as good. If you do decide to watch this movie, be sure you stay for the ending credit scenes. Notice how I said “scenes” because after the first one there is another scene as well. So to end this movie review, I rate it 8 out of 10, because it was just a good quality film that every-one can enjoy.

GIR By: Starr

“GIR reporting for duty.” “I’m going to sing the doom song now.” “I want to be a mongoose. Can I be a mongoose dog?” Sound familiar? Does it remind you of a robot dressed as a green dog? Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, the character I’m talking about is none other than GIR from the animated television se-ries Invader ZIM (2001-2006). GIR is a robot that assists ZIM, who is his master/leader/lord. ZIM dreams of becoming a dictator and taking over and ruling the earth. Part of his mission is living on earth for the time being. In order to complete his mission and not get noticed, he wears a hair piece to cover up his antennae’s and contact lenses so his eyes will look normal. Along with his assistant GIR, he disguises himself in the outdoors by wearing a green dog suit. It fools the humans, though he doesn’t look like a normal dog. GIR Fun Facts: He loves all food, mostly pizza, tacos and chocolate bubble gum. He loves pigs. He’s thoughtful and friendly. Even though ZIM is mostly mean to GIR, they show that they care for each other. If you like funny cartoons with random acts go check out the Invader ZIM DVD or clips on a comput-er near you. It will give you lots of laughs and confusion.

Leadership Day By: Kodi and Madeline

“Oh my gosh someone help me.” “What am I doing here?” “Somebody just get me out of here.” These were some of the thoughts of the student teachers on March 7, Leadership Day. Would you have had the same thoughts? We asked Ms.Herold, the NJHS sponsor, about Leadership Day. She said Leadership day was established by the National Teacher Association and was made to allow the students to observe the other side of the desk. She also said we have Leadership Day to give kids experience as a teacher. What Ms.Herold liked about Leadership Day was how the students were able to see how difficult it is to be a teacher. Following are some other responses from teach-

Now do you get the point? Teachers are always going through hard work trying to help students be the best. Next time you see your teacher going through a rough time, why not give them a helping hand?

Rio 2 By Michael

Rio 1 was an unexpected success but would a sequel would it help or destroy the franchise? Before I tell you what I think about the overall movie, I will give a brief summary of the plot. Blu goes to the jungle with Jewel and their three kids in Rio 2, after they're hurtled from that magical city to the wilds of the Amazon. As Blu tries to fit in, he goes beak-to-beak with the vengeful Nigel, and meets the most fearsome adversary of all, his father-in-law. Now let me tell you how I feel about the movie. It was a good overall film and I advise you to see this movie. If you do watch it, you should see it in 3D because it will give you a better experi-ence. Rio 2 cost $103million to make and it is clearly seen that they used every penny of their budget. Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway did a great job voicing their characters. The mu-sic was really good, I even caught myself singing along with the song which is a good thing. This movie took me on a roller-coaster of emotion. It kept me on the edge of my seat, kept me guessing, and made me surprised. If I had to rate it, I will rate it 9 out of 10. So next time you are at the theater looking for a good movie, consider watching Rio 2.
