THE SHAUNAVON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCES 2014 CITIZENS OF THE YEAR Shaunavon’s 2014 Citizens of the Year are

KEN & MERLE SHAW The Shaw’s lengthy and varied resume

of volunteerism in our community is impressive and makes them an ideal choice for this year’s award.

They will be honoured at a Gala Banquet which will take place this spring.

The Citizen of the Year Award is presented annually by the Shaunavon

Chamber of Commerce to recognize the importance of volunteers in our community.

The Citizen of the Year selection committee (consisting of anonymous volunteers) take many factors - such as longevity and diversity of the volunteers’ contributions to the community - into account when making the selection. Once again all nominations submitted this year were for very worthy candidates and the decision was difficult as always. They encourage all nominators to continue to submit their nominations in future so that in time all of these worthy citizens will be honoured.

PROVINCE PROCLAIMS MARCH 9-15 AGRICULTURAL SAFET Y WEEK IN SASKATCHEWAN

gov.ca - Yesterday, Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart and Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan proclaimed Agricultural Safety Week in Saskatchewan, March 9-15.

“I encourage all farm owners and managers to discuss safety with anyone who works on or visits the farm,” Stewart said. “Farming has the potential to be dangerous for farmers, workers and their families. By having safety discussions regularly, you can identify safety issues and reduce risk on your farm.”

Ag r i c u l t u r a l S a f e t y We e k i n Saskatchewan coincides with Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, a partnership between the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. This year’s theme “Let’s talk about it!” encourages farmers and communities to talk about farm safety.

The Ministry of Agriculture provides funding to the Agricultural Health and Safety Network, an affiliation of the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture, to offer agricultural health and safety programming to over h a l f o f t h e f a r m f a m i l i e s i n Saskatchewan. In addition, funding is prov i d e d t o t h e S a s k at c h e w an Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions for farm safety day camps for youth.

“Planning safety can be difficult to do when there is equipment to fix, chores to do and fields to be seeded,” Morgan said. “It’s important that farmers and workers remember that they are exposed to risks on a daily basis, so they must make safety a priority and safe work practices a habit in their daily activities.”

Please visit www.saskatchewan.ca/farmsafety to read more about farm safety and to access the Farm Safety Guide.

On this day in 1997, Paul McCartney, a former member of the most successful rock band in history, The Beatles, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his “services to music.” The 54-year-old lad from Liverpool became Sir Paul in a cen-turies-old ceremony of pomp and solemnity at Buckingham Palace in central London. Fans waited outside in a scene rem-iniscent of Beatlemania of the 1960s. Crowds screamed as McCartney swept through the gates in his chauffeur-driven limousine and he answered with a thumbs-up. McCartney’s wife, Linda, who was fighting breast cancer, did not accompany him, but three of their four children were at the palace. “I would have loved the whole family to be here, but when we heard there were only three tickets, we had to draw straws,” McCartney said. Linda McCartney would suc-cumb to cancer 13 months later on April 17, 1998. As for the surviving Beatles, Ringo Starr and George Har-rison, Sir Paul said that since they learned that he would be knighted, “They call me ‘Your Holiness.’” McCartney dedicat-ed his knighthood to fellow Beatles George Harrison, Ringo Starr and John Lennon and the people of the northwestern port of Liverpool. In October 1965, McCartney, along with fel-low band members John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, collected MBE (Member of the British Empire) medals, much to the shock of the British establishment. Lennon, who returned his MBE in 1969 as a war protest, was assassinated in New York in 1980. Harrison would also succumb to cancer, passing away on November 29, 2001. McCartney admitted he was very nervous before the cer-emony but said it had been a great experience. “Proud to be British, wonderful day and it’s a long way from a little terrace (street) in Liverpool,” he told reporters. Aides said he won’t be calling himself “Sir Paul,” the title con-ferred when the queen tapped him on each shoulder with a naked sword as he knelt on the investiture stool. McCartney’s knight-hood was considered long overdue even by the conservative standards used in Brit-ain, which sees most such honors going to judges, scientists and politicians. McCartney formed the group Wings after the Beatles split up in 1970, and made records with stars like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder before trying his hand at composing classical music. “The first time I really ever felt a tingle up my spine was when I saw Bill Haley and The Comets on the telly,” McCartney once said. “Then I went to see them live. The ticket was 24 shillings, and I was the only one of my mates who could go as no one else had been able to save up that amount. But I was single-minded about it. I knew there was something going on here.”

A lawyer died and arrived at the pearly gates. To his dismay, there were thou-

sands of people ahead of him in line to see St. Peter. To his surprise, St. Peter

left his desk at the gate and came down the long line to where the lawyer was,

and greeted him warmly. Then St. Peter and one of his assistants took the lawyer by the hands and guided him up to the front of the line, and into a comfortable

chair by his desk. The lawyer said, “I don’t mind all this attention, but what makes me so special?” St. Peter replied, “Well,

I’ve added up all the hours for which you billed your clients, and by my calculation

you must be about 193 years old!”
