“The donation of these meteorite fragments to the RSM and the research that can be done on them will expand our understanding of the history of the universe,” RSM Director Harold Br yant said. “B e s i d e s re s p on d i n g t o t h e significant public interest in meteors, other celestial bodies and events, the RSM’s mandate includes research and education, and the collection and conservation of meteorite f ragments contr ibutes to the permanent record of our geological history.”

Once again, the RSM engages us, helps us learn about our world and contributes to our quality of life.”

IRISH SODA FARLS“Soda bread dough is flattened into a round circle, and divided into farls meaning 4 parts. It is then cooked on a dry griddle or pan. Traditionally this was the quickest way to make soda bread for unexpected guests who drop by for a bit of craic (good fun). It’s best eaten fresh with butter and jam but is also delicious fried as part of an Ulster breakfast.”

2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup buttermilk

• Preheat heavy based flat griddle or skillet on medium to low heat.• Place flour and salt in a bowl and sift in baking soda. Make a well in the center, and pour in the buttermilk.• Work quickly to mix into dough and knead very lightly on a well floured surface. Form into a flattened circle, about 1/2 inch thick and cut into quarters with a floured knife.• Sprinkle a little flour over the base of the hot pan and cook the farls for 6 to 8 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

His bravery is inspiring, his grace is charming and his credentials are out of this world. In 1984 Marc Garneau became the first Cana-dian to fly on a NASA mission to space. During his 15 years as an as-tronaut, Garneau flew three times and made countless contributions to the Canadian space program, eventually becoming its president. On the ground or in the air, Garneau has been a passionate educator and trailblazer for space exploration. After a rigorous selection process, Marc Garneau is chosen to be the first Canadian astronaut to fly on a NASA mission to space. To-day marks the beginning of his life as a national celebrity and a space hero. In October 1984, Garneau will climb aboard the Challenger shuttle and blast into space.

• Marc Garneau was born on Feb. 23, 1949, in Quebec City where he spent most of his childhood. He has one older brother and two younger brothers. • He received a PhD in electrical engineering from the Imperial Col-lege of Science and Technology in London and then went into the navy, where he served 10 years as a combat systems engineer.• NASA invited Canada to partake in its manned missions as a ges-ture of appreciation for the Canadian-made mechanical space arm called the Canadarm. The Canadarm is a robotic reaching arm at-tached to the space shuttle. It is used to manipulate satellites and other hardware from within the shuttle. • Canada donated the Canadarm to NASA, as part of the space shuttle program. It was an expensive gift -- at approximately $100 million Cdn. But NASA later ordered and paid for four additional units. Canada has since become renowned for its expertise in robot-ics. For more on the Canadarm, please visit our topic Canadarm - A Technology Star.• Garneau was the second non-American to go into space on a NASA flight. The first was Ulf Merbold, from Germany, who flew in 1983. Selected only seven months before flying, Garneau had the shortest training period in NASA’s history. He arrived in Houston two months before the flight and was trained only in the essentials - preparing food, using the bathroom, communicating, and knowing how to handle emergencies.• Garneau had a cluster of space experiments to complete for Canada. The experiments focused on the body’s response to outer space, ranging from the sensitivity of nerve endings to the na-ture of motion sickness. For eight days the seven astronauts orbited the earth once every 90 minutes, a total of 133 times, at a speed of 27,000 km/h. The distance covered was more than 5.3 million kilometres. • In 1989 Garneau was named deputy director of the Canadian Astronaut Program. In this position he would provide technical and pro-gram support for the preparation of space ex-periments on future Canadian missions. • In 2001 he became president of the Canadi-an Space Agency. He stepped down from his position to run for the Liberals in the 2006 federal election. Although he was touted as a “star candidate,” he lost. He did win a seat for Westmount-Ville-Marie in 2008 and held the seat in the 2011 election.

5 TAX DEDUCTIONS YOU MAY NOT HAvE KNOWN ABOUTctv.ca - Are you getting the most out of your income tax return? Diligent receipt collectors and record-keepers may think so, but one expert says many Canadi-ans are missing out on tax deductions we didn’t realize were allowed. Cleo Hamel, a senior tax analyst at H&R Block, told CTV’s Canada AM Thursday that a number of common expenses are often overlooked at tax time because few people know they can be claimed.

Here are 5 little-known deductions that might boost your income tax return this year:

• TRAvEL MEDICAL INSURANCE: Hamel said many Canadians purchase out-of-country medical insurance every year, but never think to claim it. “Don’t throw the receipt out,” she said. But remember that only medical, not trip can-cellation, insurance is tax-deductible.• CHILDREN’S ACTIvITIES: Many parents are aware of the children’s fit-ness credit, which allows them to claim expenses related to their kids’ sports activities. But Hamel said there is also a children’s art credit, which may cover tutoring, language and music classes, among other expenses.• HEARING AID BATTERIES: “People have to buy them on a weekly basis sometimes,” Hamel said. “So if you are purchasing them…buy them separately so you have a receipt for them, and claim them as a medical expense.”• PUBLIC TRANSIT: Monthly transit passes are tax-deductible. Even if you qualify for a subsidy, you can claim the amount you still have to pay out of pocket, Hamel said. • SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX RENTAL: This likely won’t be an option as of next year, so take advantage of it, Hamel said. “It might be 40, 50 or 60 dollars that you’re able to claim and as far as I’m concerned, every dollar you save counts.”
