You’ve created a space where on Earth you can be found. You’ve created your fortune, your home and story line and so you work to sustain all you’ve built, but this should not become your whole purpose.

You have passion deep within; you still want more from this life; you have things to achieve before it’s over. Can you

remember how you felt when you were young, when the world was still open for you to grasp and

explore? Can you remember what you wished to achieve?

1) Plan the Process. Careful planning of the whole process is key. Prepare a timeline detailing dates of meetings, follow up letters, making sure you have taken into account anyone on maternity or adoption leave, off sick or on holiday. An easy way to keep them informed is by allowing them to join consultation meetings by phone.

2) Collective redundancies. You must make sure you follow the collective redundancy process if you are making more than 20 people redundant in a 90 day period. This involves, amongst other things, allowing those employees who may be affected to elect representatives to consult with you on their behalf.

3) Meaningful Consultation with representatives and affected employees is central to the redundancy process. Failure to do so can result in severe financial penalties.

4) Individual consultation. Even in a collective redundancy situation, individual consultation is still required, to allow the employee to sit down with you and discuss the need for redundancy and any ideas they may have to avoid or reduce them.

5) Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS). If you are making 20 or more employees redundant, ensure you inform the BIS.

6) alternatives. No idea is a bad idea. Consider all possible alternatives such as job sharing, part-time working, reduction to a four-day week, pay cuts, etc.

7) Selection Criteria. When choosing which employees to make redundant, selection criteria must be applied. The pool that employees will be

chosen from must be fair, and selection criteria must be applied fairly and objectively. The only time that selection criteria do not apply, is when a company is shutting down completely.

8) Feedback on scores. Employees should be informed of their scores under the selection criteria and given the opportunity to discuss them and comment on their appropriateness. Don’t discuss one employee’s scores with any other.

9) No decision has been made. Throughout the redundancy process, do not present the redundancies as inevitable. Demonstrate a willingness to listen and if appropriate, act on proposals made by employees/representatives to

avoid redundancies and make changes if needed. Use words such as

“proposed”, “potential”, “when a final decision is made”, etc.

10) Business reasons. You have a responsibility to inform employees of the business reasons for the redundancies, and it will also give them a better understanding of why they

are taking place.

11) Pay Issues. You will have to pay any statutory and contractual

redundancy pay as required, but you should also bear in mind any other

amounts payable. For example, if a discretionary bonus is paid every year to all employees, it may be seen as contractual, therefore those being made redundant may be entitled to some or all of it, on termination of their contract.

12) adoption or Maternity Leave. Beware! Anyone who is on adoption or maternity leave has enhanced rights and any available alternative positions must first be offered to them ahead of any other employee.

Expansion Plan for Milton Keynes Hospital on the HorizonMilton Keynes hospital chiefs have submitted a capital bid to the Department of Health worth £178 million.The bid would see a £40 million brand new ‘common front door’ bringing the current Urgent Care Centre and the A&E together, plus a £100 million ward block and a new car park.

Both Iain Stewart MP for MK South and I have been campaigning for a new A&E and we have given our complete support for the bid which is likely to be given the go ahead, subject to the completion of the MK Health Care review.We’re ambitious for MK and want to aim high and future proof our hospital for a growing population. Having campaigned tirelessly for an expansion of A&E and successfully delivered £2.9 million for 13 new bays, we want to go even further. Refurbishment of the reception area starts in two months’ time to build a new clinical area and the creation of a new spinal service are just some of the positive developments underway. This bid will enable our hospital to develop its clinical provision and give our healthcare professionals the support they rightly deserve in the years to come.

eaders may have picked up on the news of a £178million expansion bid by Milton Keynes Hospital.

In this article I want to discuss a little more about the bid, the improvements at the Hospital and rebut some of the nonsense that is being peddled by those who want to “weaponise” the NHS for political gain.

The NHS in Milton Keynes has had significantly more money invested in it over the last five years. This year £274million will be spent; an increase of 7.64% over last year; the third highest increase in the country. We have 31 more hospital doctors, 96 more nurses and almost 5,000 more operations since 2010.

We have had a capital investment of 11 new treatment bays in A&E. Clinical standards at the hospital are improving and a new medical school is opening that will help MK attract the best of the next generation of clinicians. A new cancer unit will also soon be opening its doors and the hospitals reception area will soon be relocated to free up more space for clinical treatment areas.

There are however, still big challenges that we have to face. There are ever growing demands on the NHS, with a growing population locally, people living longer and medical science advancing all the time.

That is why I very much welcome the bid by the hospital for £178m of capital investment; to include a further expanded

A&E, new wards and other clinical improvements. The health chiefs at Milton Keynes Hospital

are confident that these plans can secure the Hospital’s future and will tackle the

challenge of MK’s growing population for the next two decades.

Mark Lancaster MP and I have given this bid our full and unreserved support and I can assure residents that we will both do

all we can to secure it.

The NHS is an institution close to our hearts. Our health service continues to be an example

to the world. But, we must not kick it around like it is a muddy political football. We must celebrate its successes

and tackle the long-term challenges it faces.
