THE MAP INDEX

The red letters and numbers in the borders provide a location refer ence system based on that of Map 2148,Ontario Mineral Map1968.

MINERAL PRODUCTION AND RESOURCES

The map-area contains occurrences of beryllium, cadmium, copper, fluorite, gold, graphite, iron, lead, lithium, marl, molyb denum, nepheline, nickel, pyrite (sulphur), silver, stone, uranium, and zinc. Deposits containing small amounts of native arsenic and selenium have been reported.Veins containing amethyst or fluorite are of interest to collectors, and agates, derived from Keweenawan volcanic rocks, are found along Lake Superior island beaches.

Local sand and gravel is being used almost continuously for construction purposes. A small amount of amethyst is being quarried for collectors and the lapidary trade near Loon Lake north of the city of Thunder Bay, and at Kabamichigama Lake, northeast of Nipigon,

Silver production began in the area in 1868 from which time the metal has been produced intermittently up to 1922 from the Silver Islet mine near the foot of the Sibley Peninsula, fn 1870 this pro duction was joined by that from the Beck and Three A mines at Silver Harbour. In the 1930's gold and silver were recovered from the Cook Lake, Empress, Gold Range, Harkness-Hays, North Shores, and Schreiber-Pyramid mines near the town of Schreiber. A small amount of lead and zinc has been obtained from several mines in Glen, Dorion, and MacTavish Townships but the largest produc tion of zinc, copper and cadmium was obtained from the Zenith mine north of Schreiber, which operated from 1966-1970.

The total metal production from the map area tp the end of 1970 was as follows:

CadmiumCopperGoldLeadSilverZinc

141,403 Ibs.517,214 l bs.45,267 oz.

208,000 Ibs.2,895,327 oz.

55,669,264 Ibs.Of t his most of t he siiver and gold production was from t he Thunder Bay area, whereas most of the copper, cadmium and zinc was from the Schreiber area.

HOW TO OBTAIN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Published geological maps used as reference in the preparation of this sheet are indicated on Index Maps 2082, 2083, and 2084 of the Division of Mines, Ministry of Natural Resources, Toronto, on Index Sheets 42 and 52, Geological Survey of Canada, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, and in subsequent periodic News Releases of these departments.

Three uncoloured preliminary maps covering this sheet may be obtained from the Publications Office, Ministry of Natural Re sources, Toronto. These are at the scale of one inch to two miles and are named as follows: P. 357 Red Rock-Pine Portage sheet, P. 358 Black Bay sheet, P. 360 Schreiber sheet.

Published geological reports covering this sheet are listed in Bulletin No. 25, Division of Mines. Ministry of Natural Resources, and in the Index of Publications, Geological Survey of Canada, 1961. Additional reports have been prepared by the Department of Industrial Development, Canadian Pacific Railway Company.

Topographic maps of the area may be obtained from the Ministry of Natural Resources or the Topographic Survey, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa.

Air photographs may be obtained from the Silviculture Section, Ministry of Natural Resources, Toronto, Ontario or from the National Air Photographic Library, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa.

Aeromagnetic maps covering this sheet may be obtained from Ministry of Natural Resources, or t he Geological Survey of Canada.

The name and ownership of many mineral occurrences shown on this sheet are given on Map 2148 Ontario Mineral Map 1968.

Information on mines and mineral occurrences may be obtained at the office of the Resident Geologist at Thunder Bay.

Mining claim maps and general information for prospectors may be obtained at the office of the Mining Recorder at Thunder Bay or at the Ministry of Natural Resources, Toronto.

Up-to-date information on current developments of the mineral industry may be obtained from the annuai review of the Ministry of Natural Resources published in the early months of each year.
