Welcome to the first edition of Your Tefal magazine, where we go behind the scenes to unveil some of our new products for the second half of 2015 and look at the trends affecting how we live, cook and eat today. We have one motto at Tefal and that is to make everyday life easier. It is the reason that innovation is at the core of everything we do, not only when developing products but in the way we run our business. As part of the Groupe SEB family, Tefal is there to anticipate and invent for tomorrow. We are constantly looking for better solutions to simplify everyday tasks, such as inventing Freemove, Tefal’s first powerful cordless iron.

In that vein, we have come up with a simple way to access our brand by putting all our hero products in one place, in Your Tefal. In this magazine you will find interviews with our marketing team, expert advice from nutritionists, quotes for Tefal by Jamie Oliver and new product round-ups. Most importantly, we hope that these articles will inspire you just as much in your home life as for work.

FOOD PREPBringing a touch of panache to any kitchen, the White Collection, with its modern design and stainless steel finish, is the answer to all of your food prep problems. The combined collection will blend, liquidise, emulsify, knead, chop, grind, whisk and beat – turning all of those fiddly jobs into simple tasks. We are also proud to welcome our new Cuisine Companion. A revolutionary product that will change the way you cook. It can do everything for you, from preparation right through to dishing up! Turn to page 7 to get a first look.

ELECTRICAL COOKINGTefal has brought together its 22 patents and ten years of research which went into the creation of its Original ActiFry to develop the new ActiFry Express XL: the fastest low-fat, guilt-free ActiFry. The Tefal Cook4Me is essentially a sous chef in your kitchen. It simplifies the cooking process by giving you a step-by-step guide through its 50 pre-programmed recipes. The Cook4Me advises you on the quantity of each ingredient and automatically sets the cooking function and temperature to produce great meals every time.

COOKWARETefal is not holding back when it comes to your pots and pans this year. The cookware team continues to revolutionise how we cook at home with an addition to the innovative Ingenio family. Tefal has rejuvenated a much-loved and traditional way of cooking with the introduction of a brand new range of modern-day pressure cookers. Finally, the Jamie Oliver by Tefal brand has seen two new stylish additions with the sleek new Stainless Steel and new Hard Anodised ranges.

LINEN CARE After surveying the British public, it didn’t come as a surprise to find 47% of us don’t like ironing, so we have made it our duty to turn linen care from a burden to a breeze. The Effectis Steam Generator, the smallest steam generators that Tefal has ever created, is the perfect size for a cosy home, while our new range of Garment Steamers are a sure hit for fashionistas looking for crease-free, fresh perfection. Keep an eye out for our upgraded versions of the Aquaspeed and Ultraglide steam irons as well this year. Linen care? Boring? We think not.

INGREDIENTS 400g large macaroni pasta

2 tbsp. olive oil

1 red onion, finely chopped

100g chorizo, thinly sliced

1/2 red pepper, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, finely sliced

175g baby scallops

250ml tomato passata

2 tbsp. sundried tomato paste

1 tsp. sweet paprika

320g mussels picked and cleaned

160g shelled king prawns

1 large handful of finely chopped parsley leaves

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

DELICIOUS SPANISH FIDEUA

1 To make the Spanish fideuà, preheat the oven to 180. Using the Tefal Ingenio pasta insert and a 20cm Ingenio saucepan, cook the pasta in boiling water until al dente. Lift the pasta insert to drain and set to one side..

2 Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large Tefal Ingenio pan over a medium heat and add the onion, chorizo and red pepper. Stir fry for 5-6 minutes until golden then add the garlic and scallops and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally until the scallops are just cooked through.

3 Chuck in the tomato passata, tomato puree, sweet paprika and 50ml of boiling water. Season with a good pinch of salt and pepper and mix well.

4 Tip in the cooked pasta and mix everything together. Scatter over the mussels and prawns. Cover and pop into the hot oven for 4-5 minutes or until all the mussels have opened. Remove the Spanish fideuà from the oven, scatter over the parsley and serve immediately with the lemon wedges and a good drizzle of your best extra virgin olive oil.

JAMIE OLIVER HARD ANODISED PROFESSIONAL SERIES, FROM £50.00 Engineered to be both ultra-resistant and stylish, these aluminium pans feature Tefal’s durable titanium non-stick coating and gorgeous detailing, such as curved stainless steel handles with subtle silicone insert for a comfortable grip.

JAMIE OLIVER STAINLESS STEEL PROFESSIONAL SERIES, FROM £45.00 A timeless statement piece for the home, this range of polished stainless steel cookware with riveted handles is both versatile as well as hard-wearing. Dishwasher and oven safe, with solid stainless steel lids.

JAMIE OLIVER BY TEFAL HEAD CHEF FRYING PAN, £20.00A perfect gift for the ‘head chef’ at home, this fun frying pan features Tefal’s innovative non-stick and Thermo-Spot technology.

Right from the start, Jamie gets involved in the look and feel of the product, whether that’s deciding on materials and shapes, or the fit of the handle and the finish.

Jamie began working with Tefal in 2003, so we now have more than a decade of experience under our belts. We started with a collection of frying pans and the brief was simple: like all Jamie Oliver products, the pans needed to look good, feel good and really help in the kitchen, no matter how experienced a chef you were. The products quickly became popular in the UK and all over the world. Since then the range has grown and now features stainless steel cookware, griddle pans, roasters and many other pieces. All the products have been designed by Jamie and the Tefal team to provide great value, as well as lasting cooking performance.

This year, we’ve launched two new Jamie Oliver by Tefal ranges as part of the Professional Series collection. The stylish new Stainless Steel range and the tough Hard Anodised set both offer beautiful yet durable cookware with a professional edge.

In addition to product collaborations, Tefal is also proud to have worked with the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation for several years. Tefal supports the foundation through a number of initiatives: by providing cookware to the Ministry of Food community centres and to primary schools through Jamie’s Kitchen Garden Project, and by raising money.

Despite his extremely busy schedule, Jamie has always found time to work closely with Tefal and we are looking forward to another exciting year ahead for the Jamie Oliver by Tefal brand.

RESULTS

We can imagine that many revolutions have started with a single, great idea. And it’s easy to think that when the idea formed, they probably didn’t realise that they’d just changed the world. It might seem like a stretch to talk of revolution and the invention of a non-stick coated pan in the same breath. But looking back over the past 60 years of Tefal’s home innovations, you’d have to agree that back in 1954, Marc Gregoire made that first step towards changing the world. He certainly changed the face (and thankfully, the results) of home-cooking forever.

Two years later, despite 100 pans made per day and Jackie Kennedy among the Tefal pan fans, the progress didn’t stop.

There were waffle irons in 1974, raclette grills in 1975 and the super-fondue in 1978. Not to mention that in 1963 they had the wonderful idea to revive Pancake Day (a decision, we’re all still grateful for come February).

Besides bringing French cuisine to homes across the world, Tefal also took to making the process of creating tasty, healthy and exciting meals that little bit easier too. For example, we have the Thermo-spot heat indicator, invented in 2000, to thank for our perfectly cooked dinner, or the Ingenio stackable pots and pans for the extra space in our cupboards. Not to mention previously unbelievable creations like the ActiFry, that brought a whole new look to the concept of ‘deep frying’ to the table. Before 2006 we never imagined we’d say the words ‘fried’ and ‘healthy’ in the same sentence, and now look.

And the leaps and bounds haven’t been limited to the kitchen. The 1980s saw Tefal look deeper into our homes to re-think the way we approach linen care too. The research and development teams at Tefal were set to revolutionise the humble domestic iron. You can imagine them asking - what’s the most annoying thing about ironing, and how can we solve it? So in 1981 they came up with the electronic thermostat iron. It sounds simple now (we’ve gone much further since then, after all) but think about how tricky it would be to iron without any idea what heat it was at. In 2013 Tefal stopped us getting tangled in cords with the Freemove range - the first cordless iron that managed to match a traditionally corded iron for power. Not to mention, steam generator irons that bring the possibility of a professionally finished look to people’s homes.

With this kind of appetite for innovation, it’s no surprise that Tefal are manufacturing 50 million products every year from their home in France and can be found in 120 countries. They also have hundreds of patents and are most importantly still hungry to make our lives easier, healthier and a bit more fun (even when it comes to ironing).

In another 60 years, who knows where Tefal will have taken us, what conventions they’ll be busy challenging then. But when you think it all started with one idea, it sounds pretty revolutionary, right?

DOMINIK PYTEL MARKETING DIRECTOR GROUPE SEB UK AND IRELAND

Delve into the British kitchen and you’ll see something almost unique to these Isles – cupboards, fridges and pantries full of a variety of spices, sauces, meats and vegetables from all over the world. Britons have one of the most cultured pallets across the world and this is definitely something to be celebrated.

However, while we might love eating these dishes – cooking them is another story. We might like the idea of whipping up something exciting for dinner party guests but many of us are left a bit bewildered when faced with an endless list of exotic ingredients, wishing we’d paid a bit more attention to Saturday Kitchen.

But fear not, this is where the latest technology can come to the rescue. If your cooking skills don’t quite satisfy your taste buds, then there is most likely an appliance that can help you. Today’s kitchen appliances can take all the hard work out of dishing up delicious menus. They can guide you through the entire cooking process, from preparation right through to getting it onto the table.

In 1946, the launch of the food processor was seen as a culinary breakthrough. It revolutionised kitchens by making food preparation so much easier and allowed home-chefs to make the most out of their glum, post-war larders.

Twenty-five years later and electrical kitchen appliances became the norm. UK consumers had become accustomed to

having a number of products around the home designed to make life easier. The slow cooker, in particular, made such an impact that it started a new trend in cooking and the one-pot recipes are just as popular today.

Our penchant for hassle-free cooking means that food processors and slow cookers are still a favourite in British kitchens. With increasingly busy lifestyles the idea of having an appliance that can get on with the cooking, thereby freeing you up to do other things like spend time with the family or simply catch up with your latest boxset, renders these products priceless.

At Tefal, we feel that the UK kitchen is now ready for the next big thing. Combining all the best bits of a food processor with the capabilities of a slow cooker, Tefal introduces the Cuisine Companion – an all-in-one wonder machine that replaces up to 10 existing kitchen appliances and is pioneering the Assisted Cooking category.

As we look to the next 12 months, we also anticipate that the ‘connected home’ will continue to be a big story, driving a rise in smart, technologically-advanced kitchen products on the market as manufacturers invest millions of pounds into research and product development. Wifi-enabled, Bluetooth-connected and App-ready appliances will mean not only that we will be able to communicate with our products in and out of the home, but they will also be able to talk to each other.

‘Green’ products featuring eco or energy-saving functions will also play a big part in what we buy in the coming year, as homes across Britain are further encouraged to reduce their energy consumption. We also believe that the boom in health-led apps and wearables, just like the FitBit, will see this type of technology making its way into our kitchen. As people become accustomed to tracking every aspect of their wellbeing, we may soon see electrical kitchen gadgets that go as far as analysing a person’s food consumption as big name manufactures partner with well-known nutritional app developers.

Here at Tefal we are at the forefront of developing these trends into products that consumers can’t live without.

ELECTRICS AT TEFAL

ANDRE SILVA

YOUR TEFAL / KITCHEN ELECTRICS / COMING SOON 9

Tefal has been developing some exciting new products for the second half of 2015.Our recently launched White Collection was inspired by UK consumers’ call to have matching products in their kitchen. We selected the colour scheme because it gave the products a sophisticated look that was flexible enough to fit with most kitchen colour schemes, as well as looking good in its own right. Each of the products in the collection were selected because they are among the most multifunctional food prep items.

After a few years in the spotlight, we’ve seen the juicing trend decline somewhat in favour of traditional blending and smoothie making. We expect this trend to carry on throughout 2015 and as long as there is new technology and products to support evolving interests in the category we expect it to continue into next year too.

The Tefal brand is all about innovation, and although we are extremely passionate about producing high quality and helpful products, on occasion we do try to come up with something a little bit different, such as the

Toast ‘n’ Egg. It can be difficult to produce a quirky product that will sell in high volumes, so when we do we always think carefully about what will be both fun and functional. Although we can’t reveal more details at this stage, the product development team is currently working on some fresh and fun products to launch next year - so keep your eyes peeled.

10 YOUR TEFAL / ACTIFRY

COOKSCURRIES, CASSEROLES,

STEWS, STIR-FRYS,

RISOTTOS, DESSERTS

AND MORE!

Making home-fried chips healthy

sounds like a bit of a mission

impossible. Which is perhaps why

it took more than 15 years, over 50

people and 15 patents to crack. And

why Oprah Winfrey is one of the

ActiFry’s biggest fans.

10 YOUR TEFAL / ACTIFRY

From doctors to heating engineers, potato specialists to a panel of tasters, a lot of experts were needed to create a plate of healthy chips that could match their deep-fried cousins for taste and crunch. Not only match them, but take just one spoonful of oil to do it.

HELPING TO FIGHT OBESITYIt sounds like a long time and a lot of effort, but it was important to develop a product that took the guilt out of eating fried food - something that allowed people to diet without saying goodbye to their favourite dishes, and fundamentally for Tefal and Groupe SEB, to develop a machine that could become part of the answer to the global obesity crisis.

The good news is that an appliance actually does have the power to spark a positive lifestyle change. We found that after three months with an ActiFry, Multi Delices yoghurt maker and a VitaCuisine steam cooker a group of 105 Tefal testers were more likely to prepare dinners with their partners and children and half as likely to buy canned or frozen ready meals than their counterparts without the appliances. What’s more, 71% of participants saw a reduction in their waistline and were almost 20% less likely to order a takeaway too.

NOT JUST CHIPSAnd that’s what we were really hoping for, because we knew that the temptation of ordering a takeaway was one of those things we were really up against when it came to the ActiFry. That’s where the mobile app comes in - providing a steady stream of inspiring recipes for tasty meals that prove there’s more than chips up the

ActiFry’s sleeve. Think Madagascan beef stew, homemade fried rice or holiday-style calamari that’s kept its crunch, and desserts that’ll leave you feeling good not guilty. All designed to be so easy to make, you can have a home cooked meal even when you can’t face doing the cooking. Plus, with the appliance’s handy automatic paddle, which stirs your food as it cooks, dishes like risottos and curries are hands-free as well as healthy - so there’ll be no need to spend 30 minutes over a hot stove anyway.

AN ACTIFRY FOR EVERYONE Once the technology was tried, tested and proving to be popular, we decided to extend the range, adding the ActiFry Plus, which can hold up to 1.2kg of food and the ActiFry Family which upped the ante to 1.5kg – while still requiring just one spoonful of oil. And for households where countertop space is at a premium, we included the ActiFry Mini - perfect for two, only 27cm wide and 25% faster than the rest. Or for a complete meal in one go, we made the ActiFry 2in1 which provides a bowl for your sides as well as a pan for the main dish. And finally, for anyone hoping to beat the 45-minute wait for a takeaway, the Express XL can cook a portion of chips in under 30 minutes. Generally faster than a man on a motorbike, probably cheaper and at 3% fat per plate, definitely healthier too.

12 YOUR TEFAL / THE TRUTH ABOUT TAKEAWAY / ACTIFRY DAY

THE TRUTH ABOUT TAKEAWAYSomeone suggests: “Takeaway?” In the split second it takes to consider the question, you wonder what is or isn’t in the fridge, or how you left the dishes, and many of us sigh with resignation: “Yes.”

And that heavy sense of disappointment in yourself sets in instantly. I should know better. But do we really know better? It’s bad for me. But do we really know how bad?

GUILTY FEELINGSThis guilt is exactly what Tefal has tried to tackle with its new ActiFry Express XL. Tefal claim that you can have all your favourite takeaway dishes with a fraction of the fat, so long as it’s cooked in a healthier way, like in an ActiFry.

Is there really a reason to feel that guilty though? Well yes - Tefal’s ActiFryday Takeaway Report makes for some shocking reading, with some alarming figures that can’t be sugarcoated.

THE REAL STATSThe study of Britain’s takeaway habits found that the nation consumes 12,400 tonnes of fat every year through takeaways alone - spending an astonishing £6.6billion a year on them. If that’s not personal enough for you, think about this: one person can eat up to 2,900 calories per meal when wolfing down a cod and chips, including 161 grams of fat - that’s double the 70gram daily recommended allowance for a woman in one sitting.

The report asked 2,000 people to share their takeaway habits and it showed that one in seven (16%) order at least one a week. Friday is the most popular day, with 52% indulging at the end of the working week.

“Most of us know takeaways contain fat but sometimes we forget how high these levels are,” says expert nutritionist and author Azmina Govindji. “One of the key issues with takeaway dishes is the huge amount of fat used to create crispy chips or creamy sauces.”

THE ALTERNATIVEWhy can’t I enjoy amazing chips without all of this pesky guilt? Well, Tefal’s ActiFryday Challenge is showing Brits easy ways to swap their Friday night fish and chips, kebab or chicken tikka masala for healthier and cheaper versions made at home with Tefal’s genius low-fat fryer, ActiFry.

The ActiFry recipe book and phone app also make sure the power is literally in people’s hands when it comes to eating more healthily.

“Our challenge is to show people how to indulge while still reducing fat and calorie intake. You don’t have to completely give up the food you love, just use less oil,” Azmina explains.

“Taking up the challenge is a great way of making the foods you love with healthier alternatives. Cooking a delicious chicken tikka masala in the ActiFry, reduces the saturated fat content from 17.4g in a typical takeaway portion to just 1g per serving of the ActiFry recipe – after all, moderation is the key.”

ADVENTUROUS DISHESThe popularity of the at-home chef and cooking dishes from scratch has been steadily on the rise since the Naked Chef brought out the cook in all of us, and Masterchef became fodder for water cooler conversation. The advent of TV cookery shows has encouraged many of us to try our hand at creating a range of new dishes – from the everyday to the very adventurous.

Brits are not only becoming bolder with what they are whipping up in the kitchen, but we are also getting more confident with our ingredients and our seasoning. Gone are the dusty, sparse spice racks featuring the same dried parsley. Instead, we are seeking out fresh ginger, chillies and lemongrass as we look to recreate international recipes that we would once only sample on our travels. Tefal recognised this trend by launching the Madras Collection last year, which features a traditional Indian Kadai and Tawa for delicious homemade Indian dishes.

The nose-to-tail trend has also seen many of us go for more unusual and often cheaper cuts of meat. We are seeing many people using what can be described as ‘retro’ ways of preparing and cooking these recipes to ensure meat is tender and flavours are infused. This is one of the reasons that pressure cookers are making such a comeback; these versatile cooking pots are ideal for tenderising cuts of meat as well as steaming vegetables for melt-in-the-mouth results.

THE BIGGER THE BETTERTefal has learned that when it comes to the kitchen, size matters. Brits are calling for bigger and better frying pans. In fact, frying pans with a 30cm diameter or larger are now the Nation’s best sellers. Stir-fry pans are also extremely popular; as they are not only fantastic for Asian cooking but many people treat them as jumbo-sized frying pans. Along with USA, we are the global capital of large pans thanks to the huge number of oversized frying pans and woks consumers are buying into.

EXPERT DINING RESULTSDining in is still very much the new eating out, and we feel this trend will continue for some time yet. We have become accustomed to restaurant-quality meals and many of us are looking to recreate the same standard of cooking at home. That’s where the right tools for the job are imperative and we are seeking out cookware that will help us deliver gourmet results.

At Tefal we’ve seen a continuing year-on-year growth in the pots and pans market, which proves consumers are hungry for the at-home dinning experience.

Tefal has also seen an increase in demand for good quality non-stick cookware go through the roof. Our sales have doubled in the last five years and as the authority and driving force of non-stick in the UK, Tefal Cookware sold in more retailers than any other brand!

To ensure customers receive the best products in terms of both quality and value, Tefal has developed a programme of rigorous testing and quality control meaning Tefal’s non-stick cookware meets the needs of the most demanding culinary market in the world, France. Our ultra-durable non-stick coatings are tested and made to withstand the wear and tear of everyday cooking and the famous Tefal Thermo-spot, or “red dot” as it’s better known, is a symbol of quality and innovation. Today, Tefal makes more than 50 million cookware products every year in Rumilly and Tourmus in France, and these are available in 120 countries.

SPACE IS

DISORGANISED

The cookware avalanche, the ‘crash-bang’ twinge to the ear that only the sound of tumbling metal can achieve. And it’s not really your fault; cookware can just be very bulky. Yes some ranges are beautifully crafted and others just a necessity you don’t really want to think about, but between awkward handles and heavy lids it is near impossible to fit it all together in an orderly fashion. This is exactly why Tefal has launched Ingenio. Its detachable handles and butterfly knobs on the lids nest easily into each other, saving up to 40% of space and avoiding the cookware avalanche forever!

We also know that you’re not really comfortable giving up your cookware, are you? The average person owns 10 pots and pans but will only use half of these on a regular basis. In fact, 24 million of us admit to keeping our old cookware ‘just in case’. Come on, get a handle on your cookware and join the Ingenio revolution.

FROM HOB TO TABLE

TO OVEN

Linen Care is truly at the heart of Groupe SEB. This year we became the number one brand for linen care in the UK, which we are very proud of. The key to our success is innovation. We offer real solutions to meet the needs of real people.Examples of this include the cordless Freemove iron, perfect for those who often find themselves tied in knots, the Ultimate Anti-Calc iron, ideal for people in hard water areas, or our patented Smart Technology system, which, at the touch of a button, provides a simpler way to operate steam generators.

When designing a new product, we listen hard to what users really want and need. In fact, we are the only linen care brand to conduct such research. We focus heavily on quality and durability. To do this we simply refuse to cut any corners and we’re constantly developing and improving our products - ensuring that our customers are getting the most up to date technology available.

This year Tefal is very excited about the introduction of garment steamers to its range. These are ideal for people who aren’t really interested in ironing but still like to look after their clothes. These products have four main benefits: 1) They’re fast and easy to use, taking about 45 seconds to warm up. 2) They’re safer, with a reduced risk of burning either yourself or your clothes. 3) You don’t need an ironing board so you save space. 4) They smooth out and freshen your clothes, helping to eradicate odours and bacteria - so great for dry clean only garments.

We also expect to see the steam generator market grow significantly over the next 12 months. They are already rising in popularity and although steam generators may take up a lot of room, they take half as much time to iron your clothes as a steam iron and produce extremely good results because of their sheer power. Currently, there are 10 steam irons sold for every steam generator - but as more people hear about their benefits and give them a go, we expect this to change dramatically.

£

RECLAIM YOUR WARDROBEIt’s called an ironing bored for a reason but far from just keeping Brits in creased clothing, reluctance to iron is actually costing us £1 billion a year in ignored fineries.Ironing is officially the nation’s most disliked household chore, deemed worse than vacuuming, dusting and washing clothes, according to research into our ironing habits by Tefal.

The effects are actually huge. Brits are spending close to £1 billion a year on clothes that will drift to the back of the wardrobe or sit in a drawer - all because we can’t bear to iron them.

Tefal, no strangers to caring for clothes as the UK’s leading linen care brand, were shocked to find that the average person refuses to wear more than a quarter (27%) of their wardrobe simply because they are too creased. Six million also go as far as binning clothes we find too frustrating to iron.

It looks like there are two sides to the story of why.

On the one hand, it’s appearance. Social pressure to look well presented when leaving the house could be partly responsible for our decision to ignore or bin so much clothing, as half of people asked (50%) said wrinkled clothes tell others you don’t care about your appearance.

On the other hand, people think it’s just too difficult and time consuming.

In the UK, those responsible for the ironing spend approximately two hours and 40 minutes a week ploughing through a pile of creased clothing. This translates to around 139 hours or six whole days of continuous ironing every year.

“Despite wanting to look our best, we want to get through the ironing with the least possible effort,” explains Emmanuel Couppey, Marketing Manager of Linen Care at Tefal. “Our study shows that people think those who wear creased clothes don’t care about their or their family’s appearance, yet one in seven of the population have thrown an item of clothing away because they do not like ironing.”

And it’s no wonder, when 2.4 million people use irons that are over 10 years old and more than one million continue to use irons that don’t work properly. Tefal says you could noticeably cut down your time spent ironing by simply upgrading your equipment.

So maybe upgrading that iron is a pressing issue after all. It could save us a billion quid a year on clothes we don’t wear and rescue a quarter of our wardrobe.
