ou might not be an heiress, pop star or sports star but that’s no reason for you not to consider the benefits of establishing and promoting yourself as a brand. Taking charge of your professional image

or “brand” is critically important. Just look at brands such as Coca-Cola and Smirnoff, which have lasted throughout gen-erations and still stand out after years in the field. The brand you create today could very well determine your future to-morrow.

Thanks to blog sites, Google and social-networking sites, whatever reputation you create using these media can spread like a wildfire, and in most cases your reputation WILL pre-cede you. So, those party pictures of you going ‘wild’ at Fic-tion and throwing up from overconsumption of alcoholic bev-erages at ‘Dream Weekend’ might not so be cool a couple years from now. You may be patting yourself on your back because you don’t have much of a presence online or any at all, but even that could raise a couple flags to a potential employer. I have come across a few Managing Directors and HR personnel who admit to doing a little reconnaissance of future prospects on sites such as Facebook after receiving a resume just to get a firsthand feel of the person’s personal-ity. It might not be the deciding factor but it can play a small part.

The good thing about brand creation is that it depends solely on you, so everyone has an equal opportunity to create a worthy brand.

It is not just about differentiating yourself from everyone else, but also in taking the initiative to show what value you can add to any organization. There are a few key things to con-sider when building and maintaining your brand.

Learn from the Big BrandsTake a look not only at the big brands but also the people around us that have created a reputation and name for them-

selves. Take into consideration Sheree Martin, Senior As-sistant General Manager, Marketing, Communications and Service Delivery Division at the National Commercial Bank (NCB). Sheree has long been seen as a Marketing Guru in Ja-maica, a brand which she lives and breathes. She was recently appointed to the Advisory Board of Chief Marketing Officer Council. Sheree has embodied everything that it means to be a marketer, from her demeanor to her dress and certainly her speech.

Be Consistent Perception is key, and people have come to expect certain things from certain brands. Therefore, it is important to send a consistent message. If you portray yourself to be one thing and then turn out to be something else, it means that as a brand you are sending a conflicting message to your target market.

What is a Brand if no one knoWs aBout it? The wide availability of the internet has made it easy for one to be seen whether it be on facebook, twitter, blog-sites, LinkedIn or you own personal website, just find a way to get yourself out there.

thanks to blog sites, google and social-networking sites, whatever reputation you create through either medium can spread like a wildfire and in most cases your reputation precedes you.

The FighT conTinues

BreastCancer Awareness:

ctober is breast cancer awareness month; a time when women everywhere are brought into the spotlight, with a focus on promoting the importance

of awareness, the risk factors and prevention of breast can-cer. The colour pink and the pink ribbon in particular, have become synonymous with bringing awareness to the disease. The pink ribbon has been the national symbol since it was first introduced in 1991. As a result, millions of products designed with these ribbons are sold worldwide. This helps especially, with raising money for breast cancer research.

Each year, companies and individuals highlight their support by hosting walks for the cure, fundraising events and other activities. You can become a part of the fight against breast cancer. You don’t have to be aligned to any specific organisa-tion in order to get involved. Every woman should have an interest in bringing attention to breast cancer and also finding treatment. We’re all at risk, so it is important that we edu-cate ourselves. One of the main aims of breast cancer aware-ness month is to encourage early detection among women. Organisations everywhere encourage self examination and mammograms, which help to detect it in its early stages. This increases the rate of survival.

As women, we can also organise public education campaigns among our friends in order to spread the message about breast cancer awareness. A small act such as changing your Twitter background to pink will highlight your support for the cause, and should plant in the minds of others the need to also become involved.

There is no right or wrong age; therefore women are encour-aged to take breast cancer prevention seriously, at all ages. If you are among the more technologically advanced among us,

there are a number of different apps (applications) available that you can download to your iPods, iPhones, and other gad-gets, in order to learn more about the disease.

Finally, though not as popular, let us not forget that men are also at risk for breast cancer, and should therefore become part of the discussion. Today, make a commitment to be-come more involved in breast cancer awareness campaigns. The fight continues!

So you’re getting a divorce; cue the tears and the state of depression. You’ve been with this person almost all your life and you don’t see how you can live without them. So sulk, be depressed and drown your sorrows in food so you can gain some unattractive “comfort” weight…. Or, you could just continue to live your life. Here’s how to survive a divorce.

speak to your spouse about every reason behind the divorce. Ensure that any discrepancy is addressed. Make sure that nothing is misunderstood.

take some time to focus on you. Ensure that you accept what has happened and focus on making the fu-ture a positive one.

take up a hobby, or find a few things you are in-terested in. Don’t use free time to sulk or sink into de-pression. Focus on your interests and if you have children, your children’s activities and overall well-being should be your focus.

don’t rush into a relationship immediately after your divorce. Depending on how long you were married

it may take some time for you to adjust to single life, but this is not an excuse to start a “shot gun” relationship. Take some time to remember who you were before you were married. Take some time to adjust to the changes; then re-evaluate what qualities you want in a man. Taking it slow is the best way to go.

try to be civil. In accepting what has gone wrong, or what led to the divorce, you must attempt to put it in

the past. See the divorce as “cleaning the slate”. This step is very important, especially if children are involved. Also as they say, it’s a small world, so you may run into your ex again. Civility is necessary..

if you have children, sit down and speak to them clearly about the divorce and how it con-

cerns them and their future. Also, speak to them about visiting situations and living arrangements.
