YES PLEASEKeep your bin lids closed. This stops waste escaping and littering your area. Open bins and spilled waste may also encourage pests.
Your inner paper box, if you have one, should be kept inside your bin. If it fills up, you are welcome to place a kerbside box out with paper only inside. Please contact us to request an additional kerbside box.
NO THANKSWe cannot accept large cardboard placed beside your blue lidded bin. All recyclables need to be contained within your bin for collection.
Do not place waste or recycling beside any of your bins. Side waste will not be taken. If you have more waste than can fit in your bins, you should take it to your local household waste site. See page 4 for more information.
Please do not leave your containers on the pavements or highways in between collection days. Blocking the pavement can be hazardous for people with pushchairs, wheelchairs or the visually impaired.
Only one brown bin, one blue lidded bin and one black bin will be emptied per property. We will remove any additional unauthorised bins placed out for collection.
Collection datesPlease use your calendar to make sure you put the right bin out on collection day or visit www.eastherts.gov.uk where you can look up your collection dates.

Am I eligible for a larger black bin?Yes, if your family has six or more permanent residents, two or more children in nappies or someone who has a medical condition that produces excess waste, please contact us.
Please note:
if your bin is
too heavy this
may prevent us
from being able
to empty it.
Food WasteEach year, 7 million tonnes of food waste is thrown out of UK households. This adds up to the average family of four throwing away £70 a month!
Here are some tips on how you can reduce your food waste so you can benefit the environment, as well as your wallet.
Smart shopping Discount food offers can result in us buying more than we need, leading to food being destined for the brown bin. You can avoid this by making and sticking to shopping lists.
Brown BinRemember, anything that doesn’t get used up or eaten, such as teabags, egg shells and fish bones can go in your brown bin, where it will be turned into high quality compost.
Waste not, want not! Before planning a meal, have a look in the fridge and try to use up any loose fruit and veg. Visit lovefoodhatewaste.com for inspiration on how to use up leftovers.
Wise storageMake sure you are storing food correctly and that your fridge temperature is set to below 5°C, to avoid food spoiling early. Familiarise yourself with items that can be stored in the freezer – this includes bread, yoghurt, herbs and even cake!

Electrical items should be taken to one of the household waste and recycling centres (see below).
Your bin lid must be closed. This is to ensure all waste is contained and does not attract vermin/pests.
Please do not overfill your bin, as our machinery may be unable to lift it safely, preventing us from emptying it.
Remember to let ash completely cool before putting it in your black bin.
Do not use your black bin for builders’ waste or rubble.
Please do not present excess waste or waste at the side of your bin – it will not be collected.
General waste/black binBlack bins are collected every two weeks on your waste week.
Your black bin should be used for waste that you cannot recycle. All material placed in your black bin will go to landfill. You may include food waste in your black bin if your brown bin is full, but it will not be composted.
Household Wasteand RecyclingCentres (HWRCs)If you have larger items of waste for recycling or disposal, such as electrical goods, hard plastics, wood, metal or fluorescent lamps, take them to your local HWRCs. For details of the nearest site, and what it can accept, please visit www.wasteaware.org.uk
Crews and safe workingCollection crews are working across the district to make sure you receive your refuse, recycling and composting collections. East Herts Council will not tolerate aggressive or abusive behaviour aimed at our contractors and may report incidents to the police.

Your blue lidded binYour blue lidded recycling bin is for cardboard, glass, tins, cans, foil, plastic bottles, plastic containers, aerosols and cartons.
Please keep the paper separate from other material, either in your inner paper box or presented next to your bin in a kerbside box. Paper is a valuable material; please do not put the paper in with the rest of your recycling as this will prevent your bin from being emptied.
Bins and boxes containing items that are not recyclable will not be emptied. Please use the list on page 5 to see which items can and cannot be recycled.
Your inner paper boxPaper can be presented in an inner paper box or a kerbside box - please ensure no other recyclables are included with the paper as this will prevent them being emptied.

Bank Holiday collectionsThese can be found on your calendar or by visiting www.eastherts.gov.uk. At Christmas we will hang a reminder on your bin of your collection dates. These are the same as will be on your calendar.
What should I do when a collection is missed?Check your bin to see if there is a sticker explaining why it was not emptied. If your bin had the wrong items in it, remove them in time for the next scheduled collection, as we will not return before then.
If no sticker has been left and your binwas presented on the boundary of your property by 7am you must contact us within 48 hours to report the missed collection.
You can now easily report missed collections online by visiting www.eastherts.gov.uk/missedbin
We will then aim to return by the end of the next working day for valid missed collections.
I struggle to put my bins out – can I get any assistance? If no one in your household is able to place your bins and boxes at your collection point, you may be eligible for an assisted collection. Contact us to find out how to apply. Please note this service is reviewed annually.
What should I do if I have a damaged or lost container? If any of your containers are lost or damaged please contact us for replacements. The damaged bin will be collected when we deliver your new bin.
Are there any simple steps I can take to reduce my plastic waste?Help reduce single use items by remembering your reusables. Take items such as cloth shopping bags, hot drink flasks and refillable bottles when you’re on the go. Try to get in the habit of picking up these items before leaving the house like you would your wallet, keys and phone!
