Be part of the future of healthcare in the UKWe’re a pioneering organisation that is already delivering recognisable change to the way healthcare is delivered. We’re proud to be doing things differently; whether redefining the shape of the local health and care system through our innovative plans for integrated care, or developing new services such as our Frail Older Person’s Assessment Service and our Medically Fit for Discharge ward.

We have established Symphony Healthcare Services, a new subsidiary company of our hospital, which is working with a number of local GP practices. Symphony Healthcare Services is helping to implement new ways of working which improve access to care and support in the community and enable GPs to focus their expertise more effectively on those that need them most.

As well as creating the future, we have also won awards for providing really good, safe and caring services for our patients. To ensure the highest quality of care, we have established partnerships with other NHS and non-NHS organisations. These partnerships have enabled us to develop a new ophthalmology service, a state-of-the-art shared pathology service and the roll out of innovative technology that supports patients to access services.

Preceptorship at YeovilDuring your preceptorship you will have access to a named individual (mentor) who will be your designated point of contact.

Your mentor will guide you from the role of a student to the role of registered nurse. They do this by supporting you to develop the necessary knowledge and skills required in specific healthcare fields. We achieve this by providing a formal programme of Preceptorship. This begins with Pre-Registration Study Days, designed to help you familiarise yourself with our hospital before commencing the formal Preceptorship programme on receipt of your NMC registration.

The preceptoship scheme is open to nurses who are qualifying and you don’t necessairly need to already have your pin. We are looking for people with exceptional professional skills, who have a passion

for high-quality patient care and a keen focus on positive patient experience.

In these roles you will be assessing, planning, delivering and implementing a high standard of nursing care whilst responding to individual patient needs. For success in your application, you will be able to demonstrate good clinical practice. You will be accountable for your own actions, promoting a good working ethos, and maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff at all times. In return we will develop you to reach your full potential, supporting you to progress your career.

“Your career at YDHRegistered nursesWe have excellent development opportunities for registered nurses at Yeovil to help you achieve your full potential and progress in your career. Current examples include our ED developmental programme suitable for both Preceptorship nurses and those with more experience, but not in the ED setting. We have a bespoke supported competency based programme which allows the individual nurse to be released to ED on protected time with senior sister support to gain the necessary competencies to work in the ED department. On successful completion of the programme the individual nurse will be able to work unsupervised in the ED department. There is also a similar programme in place for registered nurses wishing to pursue a career in our Operating Theatres.

We take the career development and progression of all our staff seriously and want them to achieve their full potential. To help individuals along this pathway we have senior staff nurse positions which attracts an initial

reward payment of £1000 if successful. Successful individuals then have the opportunity to take part in a developmental programme to prepare them for the role of sister in the future.

Sisters (band 6) also have the opportunity to attend a developmental programme to prepare for them for the role of a band 7 Senior sister.

Nurses from overseasWe welcome applications from nurses who come from overseas both EU and non EU. We have support in place to help individuals achieve their IELTS, CBT and OSCE if required and can also provide financial assistance. For those that currently have their NMC registration we offer a supported introduction into working at Yeovil to help you achieve your potential and enjoy your career at Yeovil.

Advice to a new Preceptorship Nurse

My advice to any new preceptorship nurse would be:

Utilise the academy team as their help and support has been invaluable. I can’t say this enough, the team were fantastic!!

Introduce yourself and try to understand the different roles of the other healthcare providers who work in your environment such as pharmacists, OT, Physio’s and porters, as these are your team members and a good friendly working relationship, not only benefits your patients but helps you to grow as a practitioner.

You will cry, you will want to leave nursing and you will love nursing and every other emotion in between. Be kind you yourself and remember you are newly qualified walk before you run, you are now learning how to apply the knowledge you learn’t at uni, to your practice as a nurse.

Accommodation and house pricesWe can source accommodation in the local area and furnish the property for you. We then rent it to you at an all-inclusive price including the utility bills (gas, electricity, water, council tax, broadband (WiFi) and TV License).

You will be required to pay a deposit. For a room in a shared house, the deposit is £250, and for a whole house, £500. To make things easier, the deposit can be paid either on move in, or from the first salary payment. Rent is taken in arrears from your salary.

Rental is based on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy, which will have an initial minimum term. This will be approximately 5 months, depending on the property.

We endeavour to find properties in one of eight categories shown in the table on the next page.
