Successful operation in Salt Lake City / USAThe Heavydrive systems were being used for one whole year in Salt Lake City (Utah, USA) – and under extreme conditions. Large and heavy panes, assembly under over-hangs and temperatures as low as -10°C made fitting façade elements impossible with conventional systems. With the help of Heavydrive’s special systems, the massive project was able to be completed successfully.

Intensive pre-planning with the client

One year before work commenced, the project manager of the Mormons’ new headquarters got in touch with the Heavydrive managing director. The architecture of the approx. 80 metre high building included a façade with glass panes of 3 metres wide and 10.7 metres high and weighing 3.2 tonnes, and fitting a 10.7 metre high and 60 cm wide glass fin.

Heavydrive GmbH developed a custom solution for this: a counterweight traverse with a capacity of 5,000kg, a fin suction system with a capacity of 1,000kg and the flexible VSG 3500 K 4-circuit system with a capacity of 3,500kg.

To see the Heavydrive team‘s professionalism and the quality of the systems for himself, the client personally travelled to Germany in May 2015.

The construction manager was won over by a field test of the VSG 6000 K suction system used in combination with

the VSG 7000 counterweight traverse, attached to a truck-mounted crane, with its capacity of 7 tonnes. Just two weeks later the contract was signed. “With intensive planning beforehand and detailed talks with the construction management, we were able to put together an ideal assembly solution that complied with all of the project’s demands”, said managing director Guenter Uebelacker.

Reliable use on the construction site• The VSG 3500 K suction system, in combination with the VSG 5000 counterweight traverse, were able to fit the panes

underneath a 3 metre deep overhang without any problem.

• The VSG 1000 KL 9 vacuum suction system enabled extremely narrow and high glass fin panes weighing 860kg to be fitted without a glitch.

• Thanks to the weatherproof suction pads which can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C, the assembly went smoothly and was reliable and safe even in wintry temperatures.

As planned, and to the customer’s complete satisfaction, the three systems supplied by Heavydrive completed their operation in Salt Lake City in November 2016. The devices are already currently being used on other projects in the USA.

Heavydrive devices withstand wind and weatherIn Trieste, Italy, the company installed panes weighing four tonnes under extreme conditions

An Italian façade builder had spectacular construction plans for the old port at the Piazza Venezia: the complete restoration of a historic building. The original façade remained but the core of the building was completely restored. After its completion, a café, a library and a shopping centre are planned to move into the building. The future visitors await a magnificent view of the port of Trieste. For this, a pane weighing four tonnes and two panes weighing 2.5 tonnes are installed at the side of the sea.

The challenge: The façade is 800 mm offset into the building and the surrounding gap is only 10 mm. Since the façade is directly next to the sea and there is no possibility to store the panes in the port, they have to be transported over a distance of 40 metres.

This is a case for the Tapfheim-based lifting and transportation specialist Heavydrive GmbH

To install the three extremely heavy panes under these difficult conditions, Heavydrive used its vacuum suction unit VSG 6000 K with quick-change system (SWS) with a capacity of up to seven tonnes when used with the counterweight traverse. The unit installs panes of up to 18 metres length and 3.4 metres height. With the counterweight traverse, the suction unit can safely go horizontally into any recess or under any building‘s eave up to 2.5 metres.

Installation despite strong gusts of wind

This was a job done under enormous time pressure since the weather fore-cast predicted gusts of wind getting stronger and stronger from noon onwards leading to a storm in the afternoon.

At first, the largest of the three panes weighing almost 4 tonnes was installed. Via remote, the Heavydrive technician steered the pane above the sea directly to the façade. The system inserted the 9.6 metre long and 3.2 metre high pane exactly to the millimetre under the eave. The Italian construction manager instructed the employees at the sight. To install the two smaller, 2.5 tonne heavy panes, a smaller suction system was used. Thanks to the quick-change system SWS, the switching of the vacuum suction system was done in only 15 min and the installation could be carried out without delay.

However, with every pane the installation became more difficult because of the wind getting stronger which made the elements on the truck-mounted crane sway heavily. Everyone had to work highly concentrated to insert the panes safely and with high precision despite these conditions. The installation of the last of the 4 tonne heavy glass façade was completed just in time.

Heavydrive heavy-duty use in Geneva / SwitzerlandHeavydrive was used by an international organisation in Geneva in November 2016. In that project, five panes with a width of 2.2 metres and a height of 13.1 metres, weighing 1.5 tonnes, were replaced.

This was a task for the VSG 3500 K vacuum suction system, attached to the MRK 195 mini crawler crane.

The suction system reaches to 12 metres and has a lifting capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes. With the help of the 4-circuit system and battery operation, the experienced Heavydrive device operator was able to steer the system safely to turn the large glass panes vertically and lower them to lie flat at a 90 degree angle. The compact MRK 195 mini crane, which can reach up to 22.7 metres, along with the patented Heavydrive extension arm, made it possible to fit the XXL panes accurately. With this specialised assembly solution, the team had no problem fitting all five panes in two days.

It wasn’t just in transport and assembly that Heavydrive GmbH proved its competence in Switzerland. Even in the planning phase, the experts were there to offer advice and support, as the building originated in 1970. Geneva is a well-known earthquake zone and all xxxl glass panes are suspended with only one clamp at the top of the building roof. Therefore, before the panes could be replaced, the expert Heavydrive GmbH team supported the specialists in the planning of necessary intensive safety precautions.

Heavydrive innovation to be implemented in London / UKThe Tapfheim-based company installed very tall glass fins in the London Underground

Glass fins are the latest challenge for the glass assembly sector. These narrow, very tall bonded glass plates are increasingly being used to replace steel and concrete supports thanks to their stability. For these special assembly jobs, Tapfheim-based company

Heavydrive GmbH offers special systems such as the VSG 2500 KL 12 vacuum suction system. This system, the largest and most powerful available on the market, was used to build an Underground entrance in London.

A new, all-glass entrance was built at Tottenham Court Road Underground station in London. Glass fins up to 14 metres high and 450 millimetres wide stabilise the structure.

The Heavydrive VSG 2500 KL 12 suction system is the perfect solution to the tricky assembly of these extremely tall and heavy glass fins. This vacuum suction system has a bearing load of up to 2.5 tonnes and a suction length of 6.25 metres. With attachable

extension arms, the system‘s suction length can even be extended to 12 metres. The VSG 2500 KL 12 can be used to manoeuvre the very tall glass fins in the London Underground by hydraulically and smoothly turning them 270 degrees and tilting them 90 degrees. The dual-circuit vacuum system guarantees the highest safety levels during assembly.

The VSG 2500 KL 12 is an innovation on the market. So far, there is no comparable system that is able to place glass fins of this extreme height and weight as safely and easily as this machine.
