Simplest configurationThe simplest Wi-Fi configuration requires one Wireless AccessPoint wired to a MENTOR or a PHOENIX/XT lighting console, anda Pocket PC running ADB's Wi-Fi software.

Networked configurationMore elaborate installations will combine, over the venue'sEthernet-for-lighting network, several lighting consoles, severalWireless Access Points, and several Pocket PC's.For an introduction to the user benefits and capabilities ofnetworking over Ethernet, please refer to page 18.

WarningThis equipment operates in the 2400-2483.5 MHz frequencyband. Users must check whether its use is allowed in theircountry.

Ethernet / Art-NetADB has adopted the 100 Mbit/s Fast Ethernet networkbased on the widely accepted TCP/IP standard and onArt-Net, a protocol designed to allow the distribution of 256DMX512 Universes (over 32,000 channels) organised as 16Sub-Nets of 16 Universes each.Art-Net is in the public domain thus allowing the users tointerconnect nodes and programmes from any manufacturerwho has adopted it. ADB ETHERNET NETWORK

ADB Ethernet Network is a "plug-and-play" systemdesigned to be very flexible, expandable, easy to configure andinstall. Moreover, the choice of ArtNet, a protocol which is in thepublic domain, allows nodes and programmes from othermanufacturers to be connected to the ADB Ethernet Networkwithout any conversion box and extra costs. Typical examplesare Capture, Sand-Net and WYSIWYG.

Main Features and User BenefitsADB Ethernet Network allows different parts of a lighting systemto be interconnected. This means that one control desk can beconnected to another one located in a remote location to enablebidirectional data transfer between the two. Both desks couldsend data to a printer. A remote visual display could be providedin the theatre auditorium or TV studio to allow designers andtechnicians to see what is going on.Although DMX512 has been remarkably successful in its wideacceptance, it is not always capable of carrying the quantity andvariety of data required in a large modern lighting system. DMXdata can be sent over the Ethernet network allowing a widevariety of lighting information to be distributed around a buildingand then picked off where and when required, this with athroughput typically 400 times higher than via a DMX network.Since the ArtNet protocol uses Ethernet as a transport medium,commercially available Ethernet accessories can be integratedin a lighting system.One example is the use of a Pocket PC with ADB Wi-Fi softwareto provide wireless bidirectional remote control. Other examplesinclude connecting the Ethernet Network with directional radiofor linking systems in different buildings. It is equally easy toconnect it to a telephone or ISDN for long distance remotecontrol.ADB Ethernet Network can also be interconnected with ADN,the Advanced Dimmer Network, via NETPORT/XT DMX nodeand the Dimmer Manager Software (see p. 16).

Up to 16 independent DMX universes (a total of 8192 DMXaddresses) can be provided on the ADB Ethernet Network withISIS® software. Any of these universes can be available on theDMX output of each Ethernet-to-DMX-node.

Full tracking operation between lighting consoles is anotherfeature of the ADB Ethernet Network. Any action taken on oneconsole is automatically and immediately tracked by the otherones in real time, so that at all times any console can be fullysynchronised with another one. All data, configuration, screeninformation, etc. are transferred practically instantly. In amaster/slave system, should the master break down, theslave will automatically take over without the output stage beingaffected.ADB Ethernet Network allows fast data exchange betweendifferent parts of the lighting system. With the ADB multi-tasking concept, saving or loading of shows, sending data toa printer, etc. can be achieved simultaneously. In larger networks,consoles can be connected to dedicated file servers for centralstorage of shows and back-up files.

With the ADB Ethernet Network, the multi-operatorprogramming capability allows two or more operators fromtwo or more consoles to program a show simultaneously, for

example one for the conventional and one for the intelligentfixtures. Subsequently, both parts of the show can be mergedinto a single showfile and, more importantly, replayed from justone console. The additional benefit in a system with twoconsoles is that the second one can act as a backup during theshow.

Different parts of different shows can be merged into onenew show. This provides a very efficient and fast way to plotnew shows. For example one can load the house patch into ashow that has been plotted in another venue, or an operator canload his profiles into a show plotted by another operator(macros, screen configurations, etc).

Each node with a video output and ISIS® software can act as aremote screen. So the laptops, desktop PCs, and consoles onthe network can be used as remote screens. Up to four screenscan be connected to each network node.

ISIS® software is common to all PHOENIX, PHOENIX/XT andMENTOR lighting control systems. Therefore, all functionsprogrammed on one type of console can be run from any otherone.Wi-Fi Wireless Remote Control is added by connectingWireless Access Points to the Ethernet network. HandheldPocket PC's running ADB's Wi-Fi software give you access tochannel and memory management, macro execution, directaccess to dimmers and more! See page 14.

Does Ethernet replace DMX?NO! Ethernet does not allow daisy-chaining, like DMX512 does,so Ethernet’s hub-and-spoke distribution involves moreelectronic boxes which could fail.Moreover a UTP/STP cable cannot be longer than 100 m (fromactive part to active part) which means that to cover say 250 mwith Ethernet, two line amplifiers are required, whereas oneDMX cable run could do the job. A good & reliable system willbe a well-thought combination of Ethernet (possibly with fullback-up) and DMX. It may be wise to have a number of DMXuniverses wired directly from the console to e.g. the maindimmers. In the event of a failure in one of the Ethernet buildingblocks, these dimmers will still be under control.

S2MSStage & Studio Management System

S2MS – Stage & Studio Management System - provides acentralised technical management and control solution for theatre,TV and architectural applications. S2MS is unique in its ability towork with DMX, EIB-bus, Ethernet and PLC protocols in additionto the standard analogue and RS232 formats. This allows S2MSto provide central control of existing systems, replacing all of thebespoke systems often used in earlier designs. With new designs,including S2MS at the outset allows the system to be expandedand reprogrammed quickly and easily by the user.

In a theatre, S2MS centralises control of functions such asAuditorium Lighting, Work Lights – whites and blues, CurtainControls, Electrical and Security Monitoring, Proximity and LightLevel Detection, Stage Management Controls, Power Contactors,Non-Dims and much more. Similar systems can be envisaged forTV and Film studios where a greater emphasis can be placedon centralised control of all the different electrical systemstogether with the general lighting.

Architectural applications might include global lighting controlfor hotels, museums and presentation suites with facilities suchas partition control for multi-room banquet and exhibition cen-tres, security access, control of many separate lighting or audio/video systems allowing centralised master control with remoteslave operation from local control panels. S2MS, provides flexibleand cost effective central control of sophisticated systems withintechnical buildings.

The S2MS System

S2MS is based around a totally modular concept housed in a 19"cabinet and providing a wide choice of plug-in modules, eachwith a specific functionality. In brief the system consists of acentral power supply and main system unit (MSU) housed in amodular frame where the modules can be inserted, for ex. toaccept DMX inputs (DID) or produce DMX outputs (DOD), toaccept or produce analogue outputs, as links to direct PLCcontrol, for switching audio and video signals, as relay drives forcontactors or other power devices, and more...

The User Benefits of S2MS

S2MS is fully user programmable, thus completely eliminatingthe fixed bespoke solution problems. Modules and programmingare "hot pluggable" enabling "live" system alterations andreprogramming. The system supports almost all types of moni-toring devices such as voltage and current transducers, cardreaders, proximity and occupancy detectors... Flexibility is akey feature of the S2MS system design, allowing a very widerange of applications in modern or refurbished buildings.

DimmerManager provides a system-wide overview of events such asabsent dimmer units, status of CPU and back-up CPU, errorand alarm messages (fan failure, temperature, missingphase...), start of Scan Load routine, reporting of actual loadper dimmer. The optical dimmer allows noisefree and stepless dimmingfrom 0 to 100% and a flash in less than 500 ms.It makes conventional mechanical dimmers obsolete.

The colour temperature controller, via a conversion filter,allows stepless control between 5800°K and 3200°K.

The optical diffuser simply provides a second spotlight at noadditional cost.

NIETHAMMERZoom Followspots with Condenser Optics


NIETHAMMER followspots are based on the same

concepts and technology as the profile spotlights. Many

components are common to both families, thus making

maintenance easier.

The same optical and mechanical improvements as

implemented in the profiles (see p. 54) are also to be found

in the "D" series of both halogen and HMI followspots.

In addition the handling mechanism of all followspots has

been redesigned. It consists now of a swivel arm with

cardanic suspension mounted on a ball-bearing revolving

plate. This system allows the operator to aim the followspot

in any direction with a very stable centre of gravity.

This new handling mechanism can be retrofitted on existing

followspots.

These spotlights have been designed for use in professionalapplications that require high levels of lighting with daylightbalance, long lamp life, and limited power consumption.They use a 2000 W HQI®-TS lamp that produces an intense5800 °K colour temperature flux.The lamp has a lifetime of 4000 hours, approximately 8 timesthat of conventional metal-halide lamps.It uses 50% less current than conventional tungsten lamps,which allows a thinner or a longer supply cable between thespotlight and the ballast.

The use of a polished anodised aluminium reflector and a largediameter Fresnel lens further contributes to the very high lightoutput of these fixtures.A precise adjustment mechanism enables the beam angle to beadjusted between 11° and 56° for maximum flexibility.

MINOU 5 can be used with either the 2000 W HQI®-TS lamp ora 5000 W tungsten halogen lamp without any modification tothe spotlight. This feature significantly widens the applicationfield and should be of great interest for rental companies.

SOFTLUX Cool Lightsfor 18 W and 55 W Fluorescent Lamps

SOFTLUX cool lights are intended to provide coolrunning, continuous lighting, with either Tungsten(3200 °K) or Daylight (5200 °K - 5600 °K) balance, inFilm and Studio applications. They range from 36 Wto 440 W in various combinations of 18 W and 55 Wfluorescent lamps.

SOFTLUX produces 300% to 400% more lumenper Watt than conventional tungsten lamps resultingin less heat emission, less power consumption,more comfort for the subject and a greatly reducedHVAC cost.

SOFTLUX fluorescent lamps will last a minimum of6000 h, 60 times longer than conventional tungstenor HMI lamps, without degradation and loss ofcolour balance.

SOFTLUX dimming is through the DMX signal of alighting console, and/or a local potentiometer.

SOFTLUX combines a specially designed lamp/reflector unit which gives a symmetrical, directional"punchy" light output and allows longer throw orwider spread as required. The simple attachment ofa honeycomb screen allows local light control with20°, 40° or 60° field angle.

SOFTLUX Linear Space Lights SLW 220 &SLW 440, fitted with 2 or 4 pairs of 55 W lampsmounted side by side with an integral, 4-leaf blackbarndoor and optional eggcrate, are intended toproduce a wide angular light with relatively sharpedges for illuminating areas, walls, groups of artistsand even cyclorama.

SOFTLUX combines modern advances in fluores-cent lamp technology and electronic control toprovide a powerful, high frequency light source, bothflexible and easy to use.

SOFTLUX comes into a very rigid, lightweight alumi-nium body, slim and rounded for maximumoperational safety, with an elegant finish in a darkgrey semi-gloss paint. Other colours upon request.
