Over the years the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska has teamed up with Eppley Cancer Center and 15 Host Families and Communities to carry out our mission of raising funds for cancer research, while promoting beef in a healthy diet and showcasing rural Nebraska. The Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska has donated over $7 million to cancer research plus supporting health care in many local communities. Each and every host family, community and guest to a Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska should be proud that their efforts are yielding results. 2013 Host Families

Welcome from the Host FamiliesWelcome to the Hanging H Ranch. We are happy to be your hosts for this year’s Cattlemen’s Ball. It has been a year of unbelievable generosity of time, talent, items, and dollars!

We know where the real credit is due and our thanks go out to all the volunteers and donors who have worked together to make this happen. Have a wonderful time, meet old friends...

Make new friends...

As you help Eppley “ON THE TRAIL TO A CURE.”

Ralph & Beverly Holzfaster of Paxton, Nebraska, are lifelong Nebraska family farmers. They raised their five children on the farm Ralph’s parents homesteaded south of Paxton. Today the third and forth generations of family members are actively engaged in the farming and cattle feeding operation.Ralph was an Air Force Pilot and Missle Launch officer at Cape Kennedy. He came back to the farm, married Beverly, a Teacher in Paxton. They followed the harvest for 7 years, helped develop stubble mulch practices with Noble, Kraus, sunflower & Flex King. Farmed with Morrison-Quirk Co. at mile 26 Alcan hi-way. Worked with center pivot irrigation for 42 years, served on the Nebraska Ethanol Board, and completed 24 years on the Nebraska Public Board. Of all the opportunities we have had, working with the Cattlemen’s Ball, and the Eppley cancer center has been the most rewarding. Beverly and I are both cancer survivors. For your generosity & support, our heartfelt THANKS.Beverly and Ralph

Neal Hansen was born and raised in eastern Nebraska. The 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball will be held on Neal’s Hanging H Ranch near Sutherland. Neal’s grandparents were second generation Nebraska farmers. He returned to Nebraska after serving in the U.S. Navy and attended the University of Nebraska, earning his degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the founding management team of First Data Resources, President and CEO of Applied Communications, President-Data Services Group US West and Chairman and CEO of CSG Systems. He is active in a number of educational, healthcare and youth development organizations.

Hansen’s Hanging H Ranch!

The 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball will be held at the beautiful Hanging H Ranch near Sutherland, Nebraska. The ranch includes substantial South Platte riverfront and wildlife habitat. It is the perfect setting for the Cattlemen’s Ball.

The ranch operation includes grain and hay production, a registered herd of Angus cattle and performance and ranch-bred quarter horses.

A significant effort has been undertaken at the ranch to restore pasturelands, create and improve wildlife habitat and work in partnership with Ducks Unlimited in protecting and restoring wetlands.

3 Cattlemens Ball 2013

The Holzfaster’s Farm - it is in the 4th generation located 13 miles southwest of Paxton. Because of the accessabilities we are privilidged to be co-hosts with the Neal Hansen family and the Hanging H Ranch. We would be happy to have you come anytime. The coffee is always on.

Welcome from the ChairmenWe are pleased to welcome you, our guests, to another spectacular Cattlemen’s Ball. In addition to the excellent food and entertainment you have come to expect at each year’s Ball, other activities including a Ranch Rodeo have been added for your 2013 enjoyment.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the 40 committee chair-people and their volunteers committed to making sure this year’s Ball again succeeds in raising significant funds for health care research.

Volunteers have come forward from communities in Keith, Lincoln, and Perkins counties—from FFA youth groups to Knights of Columbus and many other civic groups—we are proud and grateful for the way you have stepped up—to all of you we say “THANK YOU!”

We applaud the vision and dedication of our co-hosts, Ralph and Beverly Holzfaster and Neal Hansen; their determined efforts have been very inspirational. We also appreciate the opportunity to hold this 2013 Ball at Neal Hansen’s Hanging H Ranch—certainly this ranch is “showcasing rural Nebraska at its finest.” The ranch is crossed by many historic trails, “ON THE TRAIL TO A CURE” the theme for this year’s Ball, is no less historic.

It is the hope of all of us that you, our guests, have an enjoyable and memorable Cattlemen’s Ball – 2013.

MARQUETTEHas a more complex fruit taste balanced with tannis. Color and clarity with deep purple hues make this wine attractive to the eye and palate.

TANNENBAUMThe garnet hues and cherry aroma, along with blackberry and plum flavors reflect the warmth of this holiday season. This full body red has been softened by aging on American oak. Pairs well with red meats and spicy foods.

TRINITY BLANCA blended Blanc, LaCrosse and Edelweiss. This is an off dry white wine with crisp fruit flavor. It has spent a short time on oak to soften the finish and will pair well with picnic foods. Serve chilled.

The Cattlemen’s Ball is about Nebraskans working together to make good things happen.

Page 10: Your opportunity to Co-Chairs make a powerful difference

Thank you for attending the 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball! We are deeply grateful to the people of Paxton and Sutherland and the surrounding communities who have worked together for many months to make this incredible event possible. A special thank you is extended to this year’s hosts, the Ralph and Beverly Holzfaster family, and Neal Hansen, for your generous commitment to this year’s Cattlemen’s Ball. We also extend our gratitude to the general chairs of this year’s Ball, Jon and Tim Holzfaster, for their outstanding leadership and hard work. We also thank the committee chairs, committee members, and the hundreds of volunteers for your time and your talents.

“On The Trail To A Cure,” the theme of the 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball, brings several things to mind. First, the way we diagnose and treat cancer has changed drastically since 1971, when President Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act. Across four decades, the trail has led us to the twenty-first century, and the Human Genome Project, which mapped and decoded each of 25,000 genes found in the human genome. Along the trail, research has revealed that cancer is not one disease, but many different diseases, with distinct molecular and genetic characteristics. The many cutting-edge discoveries and treatments that have been developed over the past forty years have resulted in over 12,000,000 cancer survivors alive in the United States today! Tremendous strides have been made on the trail to a cure, but there is much more to do. The new Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (formerly the Eppley Cancer Center) will be leading the trail to a cure in the 21st century. Construction began in May on the new Cancer Center complex, which is expected to open in 2016. In the new cancer center, scientists and physicians will be together in state-of-the-art facilities that encourage the exchange of ideas and information. The integration of all cancer research and care on the UNMC campus into one location will provide all Nebraskans with a facility they can be proud of, and one that will transform the delivery of state-of-the-art cancer care. It will be a model for cancer centers around the world.

On behalf of the faculty, staff and patients of the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, we thank each of you for attending this year’s Cattlemen’s Ball. We are so grateful for your ongoing support for this event. We all play an important part “on the trail to a cure!” We hope you enjoy the 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball, and look forward to seeing you again in 2014!

Serenity Spurs!Featured for the first time at the 2013 Ball are the iconic Serenity Spurs. The spurs are made of carbon steel with a patina, and when stacked are 6’ x 18’ and weigh approximately one ton. They were created by Shannon Hansen, formerly of Ogallala, now residing in Lincoln. He is currently welding program chairman for Southeast Community College at Milford. Hansen has shown work in the Modern Arts Midtown Gallery in Omaha as well as in Lincoln art galleries.

A special use of the spurs will be to honor and remember loved ones affected by cancer. Individuals may purchase serenity ribbons depicting a specific cancer that may have touched their loved one. The ribbons will then be magnetically attached to the spurs for display during each Ball. It is expected that the spurs will travel the state as part of the annual Cattlemen’s Ball.

The spurs have been sponsored by BlueCross and BlueShield of Nebraska and initiated by former State Senator and BC/BS Board Chair Emeritus, Jack Mills. According to a BC/BS spokesman, “The company is committed to giving back to customers and communities it serves.”

Ranch Rodeo!“Efficient horsemanship for efficient stockmanship”

Kevin Meyer grew up on a cow/calf operation in southeast Wyoming, after college he worked on ranches in several western states where he continued his education in both stockmanship and horsemanship. Along the way he worked for cow/calf operations, grass stocker cattle operations, feedlots, mountain grazing allotments, and high intensity grazing systems. He then switched his focus to performance horse training where he has had success in training horses for cutting, reined cowhorse, and reining competition. Now the owner of his own company, Mantz Creek Horses, which includes both horse training and stocker cattle operations, Kevin strives to combine the precision of performance horses with the durability and versatility or working ranch horses to create efficient, dependable horses that are successful in the arena and on the ranch. Kevin conducts clinics around the country teaching riders of all levels horsemanship and stockmanship based on simplicity and efficiency.

Haythorn Land and CattleHaythorn Land and Cattle was established in 1884 by Harry Haythornthwaite from Lancaster, England. Harry, at the age of 16, was stowed away on a ship of bulls headed for Texas and when he was discovered on the ship. He was forced to pay his passage by taking care of the bulls all the way to Galveston. He became a cowboy and made 4 trips up the Texas Trail. His last time to Ogallala, he decided to stay. He and his wife Emma filed on a land grant section in Arthur County, Ne and an American ranching dynasty was born. Today Craig, the great grandson of Harry, his wife Jody and sons, Sage, his wife Kelley, and Cord are partners of this historic 129 year old operation raising quarter horses and cattle.

With the cattle operations Pawnee Springs has 18 well-bred mares producing top quarter horse colts.Today the Gottsch family owns Pawnee Springs Ranch that is regarded as one of the finest working ranches in the area.

The Sonneman Ranch The Sonneman Ranch has been in the family since 1887. The original home place consisted of 160 acres and was bought by ancestors from Germany because it had a hand dug well on it. The ranch now runs a cow calf operation and small grow yard. It operates two irrigated pivots and sub irrigated hay meadow.

A Little Information on Entertainers!

50th Season of the Crystal Palace Revue

Welcome. This summer marks the 50th consecutive year that the Crystal Palace Revue has appeared at Front Street. Tens of thousands of visitors and local folk have enjoyed the production over its history. Three young ladies that went on to be crowned Miss Nebraska are former cast members. This year’s company has worked hard to prepare a lively show. The show consists of Director Bob Reynolds, an Ogallala lawyer licensed in Nebraska and Colorado. Jordan Holzfaster, Carli Holz and Maggie Reynolds all attended Paxton High School. Emi Engel, Nate Baldwin, Alex Rudolph and Kurt Lawler all attended Ogallala High School, Calla Mailand attended Perkins County High School in Grant, Nebraska. Each will be in college this fall in their first, second or third year. In their 4th year with the show our piano players are Betty Jo Riggs and Peggy Voss. Sit back and relax and enjoy the Revue but be careful, you just might learn a little history along the way.

Gary Phipps is a country western musician who has performed throughout the US since the 70s. He has worked with the Bellamy Brothers, Jack Barlow and Minnie Pearl. He has played in clubs from Canada to Las Vegas. In 2008 he was inducted into the Nebraska Country Music Hall of Fame. Phipps calls North Platte his home when he’s not traveling. You can enjoy Gary Phipps outdoors by the vehicle display.

Dick Turpin grew up hunting and fishing in the northern sand hills of Nebraska. New retired, he is featured in his own outdoor segment called ‘Turpin Time’ which airs on TV stations across Nebraska. Dick speaks publicly about family, friends, and the great outdoors. Look for Dick Turpin by an antique chuck wagon close to the Saloon Tent.

The Meyer Triangle Ranch Co. in Maxwell, NE raises registered Belgian Horses and feeder cattle. Lynn and his wife, Linda, also collect antique machinery and wagons. They have graciously donated their covered cook wagon that is complete with antique cooking utensils and equipment. You will find the wagon across from the Saloon tent.

Volunteers of America – Western NebraskaWe are happy to have this organization to help you when you are wandering around the grounds. They will be able to tell you what is going on in each tent, activities happening throughout the day and what time events will happen. On June 14th & 16th 2013, the 21st annual Ash Hollow Historic Pageant will take place. This year’s Oregon Trail to the Wild West will tell the story of what is was actually like to be a pioneer of the Oregon Trail. The volunteers will be in costume and might be reciting some of their script. Be sure to ask them if you need help with anything.

Case Hasty from Holdrege, NE is a remarkable 15 year old that will put on a strolling magic show throughout the grounds. He has quite a program of entertaining card tricks and magic acts that you are sure to enjoy. His talent started with small groups and parties and grew to entertaining in Las Vegas.
