Seven Tips for Using Credit Cards Responsibly According to a new survey, credit card debt is the most common type of debt. Here are some tips for using credit cards responsibly to help you build your financial future. 1. Check the interest rate before you apply. Shop around for credit cards with truly low rates— not just low for a few months or a year. 2. Don’t open too many cards. Only get as many as you absolutely need (probably no more than two). 3. Pay off your bill each month—or at least as much as you possibly can. Leaving a balance on your card from month to month means you’ll pay more interest. 4. Use rewards wisely. If your card offers cash back, redeeming your points for cash back is a smart way to pay down your bill without draining your budget. 5. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it. Sounds simple, but it’s an important thing to remember. 6. Know what your card can do for you. Always check the list of credit card benefits. You may have access to benefits that can save you money and protect your purchases. 7. Review your account regularly and check every purchase on your statement. You can spot any fraudulent charges that may have been made.
