COMPARISON BETWEEN BIAS AND RADIAL TYRES
Advantages:• long tyre life• outstanding traction on all types of surface• lower fuel consumption due to lower rolling resistance• improved comfort• increased resistance to punctures / fl ats• increased resistance to heating• protect property and persons
The sidewall and tread function separately.
The tread is unaffected by the fl exing of the sidewalls, so there is:
• less deformation of the tyre contact area on the ground
• less movement in tread contact area• no movement between casing plies
The crown is stabilized by several plies.
The casing has only one radial ply.
Bias or cross ply construction
Disadvantages:• accelerated wear• less grip• increased fuel consumption
The crown and sidewalls are formed by the same p ly structure.The tread is affected by fl exing of the sidewalls, resulting in:
• deformation of the tyre contact area on the ground
• movement in the tread contact area.
The casing plies tend to “scissor” in relation to each other
The MICHELIN® X® radial
The casing is made up of several
criss-crossed plies. The crown is not stabilized.

CLASSIFICATION OF MICHELIN TYRES
According to their aspect ratio
The wide diversity of earthmover machines and their uses requires the development of numerous ranges of tyres.
Earthmover tyres differ from those mounted on cars or commercial vehicles by:• Their size and weight• Their tread depths are proportionally greater• More reinforcements to deal with the harsher conditions of use
There are several families of earthmover tyres, characterized by their aspect ratio H/S (ratio in % between the height of the sidewall H and the section width of the tyre S).H= standard section height - S= standard section width
Other series of tyres are also available: 95 series, 75 series, etc.
100 series (standard)
The nominal section width is expressed in inches with to decimal places.Examples: 18.00 R 33Tyres for rigid trucks, handling equipment, etc…The aspect ratio is not indicated in the size designation.
The H/S ratio is approximately equal to 1.
H = 100 % S
80 series
The nominal section width is expressed in:Inches or fractions of an inchExamples: 8.25 R 15, 20.5 R 25orExamples: 59/80 R 63Tyres for rigid trucks, articulated dumpers, loaders, handling equipment, etc…The aspect ratio is not indicated in the size designation.
The H/S ratio is approximately equal to 0.80.
H = 80 % S
65 series
The nominal section width is expressed in inches or in millimeters, followed by the number 65.Examples: 35/65 R 33, 750/65 R 25Tyres for large loaders, articulated trucks, etc…
The H/S ratio is approximately equal to 0.65.
H = 65 % S
90 series
The nominal section width is expressed in inches followed by the number 90.Example: 50/90 R 57Tyres for rigid trucks
The H/S ratio is approximately equal to 0.90.
H = 90 % S

DIFFERENT EARTHMOVER MICHELIN TYRES TREAD
According to their tread depths
The tread depth ‘SUPER, D1, D2’ is sometimes indicated on the sidewall tyre.

PRODUCT LIFE
Tyres are made from different types of materials and rubber-based components, whose properties are essential to the proper running of the tyre itself.These properties evolve over time.For each tyre, this evolution depends on many factors, such as climate, storage conditions (temperature, humidity, position, etc.), conditions of use (load, speed, infl ation pressure, road damage, etc.) to which the tyre is subjected during its working life.
These ageing factors vary so much that it is impossible to predict the life of a tyre with any accuracy. This is why, in addition to regular user checks, it is recommended to have the tyres regularly checked by a qualifi ed professional, who will determine whether the tyre is fi t to continue in operation.This inspection must be carried out at least once a year.
Michelin may in no way be held responsible for damage that may occur as a result of use contrary to its instructions.
The preceding information is extracted from the Use and Maintenance Guide for Michelin Earthmover Tyres.
Michelin advice
Our recommended conditions of storage, tyre selection, mounting, infl ation, pressure, tyre use and its limits, tyre monitoring, repairs or similar interventions, and tyre maintenance, as stipulated by Michelin, must be followed and respected by our clients who in turn are held to inform the end users.“Our clients should train their employees who are involved in placing our products with the end users and prohibit all repairs (tyre punctures, rim welding) without fi rst demounting the tyre. If in doubt, we invite you to consult our technical documentation or one of our technicians, or, ultimately, our web site at www.michelinearthmover.com”
