The students are right back into the swing of school and have already been assessed in basic facts, spelling and handwriting. The Smart Words Spelling Word Programme has been introduced and the students are enjoy- ing their new books. It is pleasing to note that all students have made good progress with their spelling. We are starting our big picture topic around food for this term. We all enjoyed a shared lunch and Adrian visited as a pre-schooler on the last day of Term 2. Thank you to those who could attend our lunch and end of term assem- bly. Thank you also to Tineke and Amanda who have offered their time to help with sewing the aprons that the students will make this term. The school has been practising Kapa Haka and will be entertaining Wharekaka Rest Home next week. The holidays certainly gave us a mixed bag of weather but all students are back and ready to learn. They have had some awesome adventures that they have en- joyed sharing. This term I will be looking into developing a Student Leaver profile and will send this out in draft form for any input you might have. This is what we aspire for our students to be like when they leave to go on to college education. I will also be fur- ther updating our Literacy and Mathematics Curriculums. What a busy term lies ahead! With a recent burglary of a property in the area, please keep an eye on your neigh- bours and ring the police should you see anything suspicious. Awards were presented to: Week 1: Dojo winner: Flyn

Tidy Kiwi - Pippa - Week 10, Term 2 - Hannah - Week 1, Term 3 Tidy Kiwi is given out to a student who has demonstrated care for our school and classroom environment. Pippa has been seen do-ing extra jobs to keep our classroom and school clean and tidy. Hannah was the lucky recipient for Week 1 be-ing a willing helper during duty time.

Congratulations to: Hunter for improvement in reading. Garnier for showing increased inde-pendence. Hunter for excellent time work in maths. Reihana excellent work with alphabeti-cal order in a difficult concept.

Student Voice I had my birthday party in the holidays and now I am five. I get to go to

school every day now. My favourite thing at school is reading and I am

learning to read lots of different words. On the first day we all made

Rainbow Fish after Miss Mahoney read us the story. Miss Mahoney put

them in her office to brighten up the room. They look cool! - Hannah, Y1

Tora Cook Off - What a great event!

Even though we had to compete with the Super 15 Rugby final in Wellington, we had an outstanding turn out of upwards of 70 people attend to assist with eating and judging the 34 dishes which were entered. All dishes were of an outstanding quality and the variety was amazing. I don’t believe anyone went home hungry. This year the dishes entered by the children did really well so it would seem we may have a few young Master Chef’s amongst the community! Winning Results:

Best Paua Fritter Cole I.

Best Fish Dish - Joint winners to

Jenny Bargh with her Seafood Medley and Amanda Bargh with her Confit Fish

Best Wild Game Dish

Flyn I. with his Smoked Red Neck Wild Boar dish

Farmed Meat Dish Simon Bargh for his Meat Pies

Home Grown Produce Dish

Anna Jones with her Pumpkin Soup

Dessert Dish Jenny Bargh with her Tora Treats Medley

Childrens Dish

Pippa M. with her Rhubarb fool

Overall Winning Dish and Bragging rights went to Flyn I. for his Smoked Red Neck Wild Boar Dish.

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to our sponsors and the wider community for all the support this event received. The event raised a whopping $995.30 cents from the evening and Ed Holter kindly donated $5.00 to bring the total raised to a nice round number of $1000.30. An outstanding result for the school. A big shout out to Anne Dodds and Tineke McNeil for their tireless enthusiasm and efforts in organising this event as it would not have happened without these ladies. And a big thank you to the Boyne family for allowing us the use of their wool shed again. Unfortunately, I forgot to charge my camera and it ran out of batteries early in the evening so I only have the following pictures of the evening.

Community Notices: Worm Wine - Selling now at Tuturumuri School. Drop by for a bottle. Only $2 each. Your plants will love you for it (and we’ll think you’re pretty awesome, too!). The students are continually making more of this “yummy” wine... We are also after wine screw top lids or the lids off the coke/fizzy bottles. Please send them along if you have any as we have plenty of bottles but no lids. Butchering Hunted Meat Course - By Gavin Green from Greytown Butchery. 8-10 people are required to make it viable. People would need to bring their own carcasses. Course is set for June/July. Please contact Lynette at Pirinoa School on 06 307-7829. School Vegetable Garden - We have a selection of fresh vegies (pumpkins, chillies, garlic and cauliflower) harvested weekly by the school front door for purchase. Stop by and have a look.

The Yummy Fruit company Promotion is running again and goes through to September! These stickers will be converted into a winning share of $200,000 sports prize pool. from DG Sports. You can get the Yummy Company apples from Pak n Save, 4 Square and at New World. We can collect both the stickers

off the apples themselves and the cut out label on the apple bag, and bring them into school.

Louise Thompson from Project M who will be providing our school with 2 dozen muffins to pop into our freezer for the kids from the start of Term 3. And thank you to Derek our friendly Postie for picking them up from Project M and deliv-ering them to our school. A huge thank you to Anne, Tineke and Ngahuia who did a fantastic job organising the Tora Cook

Off and to Christine and Rita who helped on the night. What a fantastic event!

We have entered the Colgate Com-munity Recycle Drive and we would like communities support to help us by giving the school your empty or old tooth paste and tooth brushes. This opportunity not only allows us to teach the children more about why and how to recycle every day prod-ucts but we may also be in with a chance to win additional funds for the school! Please send them into the school!

Our HUGE Blue Scrap Metal Bin

Thank you to everyone who have kindly added to our scrap metal bin over the last 2 weeks as its filling up nicely. But, there is still room for more .. so don’t be shy if you have any scrap metal lying around your property come and put it in our bin and help raise funds for our school. Remember, if you are adding a fridge or freezer to remove all food and remove any batons on fence wire. Also a big thank you to mystery person who kindly re-stacked the bin and put out the cones on the road.
