HISTORY GROUP:

FEBRUARY MEETING

2013Oldbury Hill & Its Ancient TrackwaysDavid Williams, our speaker is one of the authors of the book on Ightham history soon to be published. His talk forms a chapter of the book and covers the history of Oldbury from the Ice Age to the present.Oldbury is a Saxon name meaning a fortified place. It is a large site of 123 acres. Its

natural defences were the steep banks on the south east and south west slopes and rocks for building walls and caves. Timber from the forest plus water made it a perfect site for a hillfort. Settlers in the Stone and Iron Ages used these natural defences and the landscape of 6000 BC is still recognisable today. Each of the settlers left their mark on the site. The rock caves were built by the Stone Age settlers, only two caves remain, the others were destroyed by quarrying in the 19th century. It is known that Oldbury was fortified in the Iron Age in 500BC since coins, metal working and pottery has been found in the excavations. There have been 5 excavations – the first in 1890 and the last in 1989. Benjamin Harrison, the Ightham grocer and archaeologist, was the first to discover prehistoric flints there in 1904. The ancient trackways running north and south were developed in the Iron Age and three of these have been identified. These trackways were important routes to the coast and continent and to Wiltshire, possibly linked to Stonehenge. Next came the Roman settlement that added to the fortifications, nevertheless the Romans only used Oldbury as a temporary camp. More recently, history records a grisly murder in 1750. The murderer was caught and hanged in a cage to die on Oldbury hill. It is not surprising that some people still find Oldbury a spooky place. In the 19th century the rock was quarried and there was also a turnpike. Now the site is a council recreation area under the supervision of the National Trust.David Williams gave us a huge slice of the fascinating history of Oldbury and its geology, packed with facts and very well illustrated with clear maps of the trackways and the site, that enhanced our understanding.V.DussekOur next meeting is at 8pm on Tuesday 12th March 2012 when Christopher Jupp will talk on the Queen’s Own Regiment, the West Kent Regiment.

FOOD PROVENCEThis has nothing to do with food from the south of France !! ‘Food provenance’ means where your food comes from i.e. where is it grown, raised or reared i.e. it’s point of origin. In many cases, as we are now seeing in the press, the food we are eating can come from many different sources. Food Provence should also tell us WHAT we are eating as well as WHERE it comes from. THE FOOD CHAIN ?Talk to any producer at the Farmers’ market and they don’t understand the meaning of a ‘food chain’ “There is no chain here” they say because they grow it, rear it, or make it themselves. No-one else is involved !In the UK we have many strict regulations as to how farmers must rear animals in the food chain and animals in the food chain are continually tested to ensure they are healthy and comply with these regulations. As we have recently seen these regulations can differ from country to country.. We also have to rely on what is written on the label by food re-seller as to the ‘provenance’ of that food and what it is !!. Again as we have recently seen some of our biggest food re-sellers not only do not know the provenance of some of the processed food they buy, but they are also unaware as to the actual produce they are using!Maybe this is a ‘blip’ and it is not the norm, but with pressure on supermarkets to provide their customers with ‘cheaper food’ they are bound to search all sorts of avenues to achieve their objectives.IMPORTANCE OF BUYING LOCALFarmers’ Markets were developed originally as a low cost retail outlet for small producers. However, compared to other food retailers they have a one enormous advantage. You actually BUY from the producer, grower, and maker of the food product. You can ASK them about the food they are selling. What do you feed your animals on? How did you make it ? How do you grow such good fruit etc ?Their food chain is non existent and the provenance of their food is just a few miles away. Local food = fresh food = quality food and more than that it is FOOD YOU CAN TRUST FARMERS’MARKET : MARCH

March sees the last of the winter at the Farmers’ Market and a final chance to savour all those wonderful comfort foods before the spring really gets going. After all that’s one of the real joys of seasonal local shopping – life moves on, ingredients come and go with the changing year, and we can all enjoy knowing we are eating food at its finest whilst giving vital support to local producers who are working flat out to cope with the challenges the British weather keeps throwing at them.A wonderful warming fish stew is a superb way of enjoying superb fish and seafood this month. Use a combination of cod, mussels and clams for the recipe below. For meat eaters, pork is an excellent choice this month and it’s still ideal weather to enjoy a hearty roast on Sunday with all the family. Try a shoulder joint for the best combination of flavour and texture. The cheaper cuts are worth trying in slow cooked stews – pig’s cheeks and pork belly, breast of lamb, shin of beef – all great value and superb eating. Rough shooting takes over as the end of the season has arrived for many game birds so rabbit and wood pigeon are both good value now.Winter cabbages, cauliflower, spring greens and kale are all picking well now. They need little cooking and are really at their best simply shredded and steamed. Or try quickly stir fried with garlic, ginger and chilli for an accompaniment to good local sausages. Cauliflower goes really well with curry spices so try it in vegetable curries,

soups and fritters. And make the most of leeks, radishes, carrots, swede and Jerusalem artichokes before they disappear.Beautiful pink forced rhubarb is really the only local fruit around now but the season is short so make the most of it. Use in crumbles, fools, ice creams and sauces – it goes particularly well with a large pinch or two of ginger. Or make up batches of rhubarb compote and freeze in pots for later in the year. Don’t forget that local apples are still good as the storing varieties go on delivering flavour and texture until April.

Unwrap Knole’s hidden collectionsKnole is looking for people who literally want to get their hands on the house’s unseen treasures. The National Trust house in Sevenoaks needs several teams of volunteers who will learn how to check, analyse and re-pack all of its items in storage, handling rare and curious artefacts which may not have seen the light of day in years. In the "Knole Unwrapped" project you could be learning how to “condition check” and care for anything from beautiful furniture, ancient picture frames and ceramics, right through to parchment documents. The work will give people the chance to experience the central work of Knole and learn about the discipline of conservation itself. It will also ensure the house’s hidden collections are properly monitored, protected and made accessible for future generations.Volunteers will train and work on six consecutive Tuesdays. There will be five of these six-week work periods throughout 2013.Emily Watts, Knole House Steward, said that while most of Knole’s hidden collection had been inventoried and condition checked in the past, everything in the National Trust’s care needs regular checking and many new artefacts are waiting to be checked, inventoried and properly stored.“Knole Unwrapped is a really exciting project to be involved in,” she said. “The work is long overdue and we really need the help of our community, alongside our existing volunteers, to make sure these precious objects are properly accounted for and stored. We’re really looking forward to building up our teams of volunteers, who could consist of people who simply like the idea of conservation, people wanting to return to work, students and others looking to develop a career in conservation.“We’ll be training people in how to care for the objects we have here at Knole, and work will include unpacking, condition checking, cleaning, photographing and inventory marking objects, updating our records and repacking the collections to museum standards in better, more accessible ways."The conservation team is a friendly and growing department within Knole, where there is so much important work to be done.“We would also like our volunteers to try researching some of the things we have in the hidden collections: who knows what we may find?”Knole is looking for 30 volunteers in total, who will be paid travel expenses. Applicants must be physically fit, with good hand/eye co-ordination and able to work in the cold: many rooms in Knole are unheated.Holly Millett, Volunteer Development Manager, said: “Knole Unwrapped is a very important project for us, as it demonstrates how we want to create new opportunities in volunteering at Knole, both for our existing, fantastic volunteers and for people in the wider community. It is the forerunner of a series of opportunities linked to Knole’s major project that will help us unwrap many areas of the National Trust’s work for volunteers, including archaeological work and curating the house.”Applicants should contact Simon Blythe, Knole

Volunteers Coordinator, for a Knole Unwrapped application form. Call him on 01732 467159 or email [email protected] shows Sarah, Lucy and Melinda from the conservation team at Knole checking one of the house’s many small paintingsAbout the National Trust at KnoleKnole is one of the country’s most precious and exceptional historic houses, containing world class collections of royal furniture, silver, paintings and tapestries. It was built by the Archbishops of Canterbury in the fifteenth century, gifted to Henry VIII and remodelled in the seventeenth century by the Sackville family. The house, set in a medieval deer park, has inspired writers, artists and visitors for centuries. Knole was the birthplace and childhood home of Vita Sackville-West, who went on to create the gardens at Sissinghurst. Knole was also the setting for Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando. Knole became a National Trust property in 1946, when the house and some 100 acres of parkland were given to the charity, with areas within the house leased back to the Sackville-West family. Historian and author Robert Sackville-West, seventh Lord Sackville, lives with his family in private apartments within the property. The Sackville estate runs the majority of Knole’s parkland, including the deer herds. The National Trust opens some fifteen rooms, cabinets and closets within the house to the public, the Great Hall with its painted staircase, two courtyards and two tower entrances, plus a visitor centre, shop, tearoom, Park Experience Room, Estate Office and the Orangery.Knole is always known as Knole, not Knole House. The upside of unexpected weatherBritish weather is great isn’t it? It looked like spring was springing with the arrival of snowdrops and a few daffodils and I almost considered extracting my bike from the shed to see if it was even vaguely ride-able (don’t fall off your chair, I said ‘considered’. I didn’t get any further than that.). Then: More snow. Determined I would get to the office and that I wasn’t going to be stuck in the house because of a misbehaving snow cloud I negotiated the icy, snowy village roads at 5.30am to get to the station (meeting a snow plough en route – really? It seemed a little over enthusiastic for just a few inches but I’m sure someone at the council had good reason….). Anyway, I made it. I got to the platform without completing any unintentional somersaults and, yes, the train was cancelled. Of course it was. And the next one too. I decided to finally take notice of the signs, drive home and do my days work from there. On the way my car broke down (Do you ever have days where you just know you should have stayed in bed?!)Actually though, it wasn’t so awful, I managed to get the car to the garage later in the day and walked home through a rather pretty wintery scene. I stopped at the local shop and post office and met people I know and got to chat to them. I even had a bit of a conversation with a few of the sheep who have taken up residence in a nearby field. They weren’t the best conversationalists, but they did pose for quite a lovely photograph. It reminded me once again how much I like the village life. When I’m not here I work in one of those huge shiny offices in Canary Wharf. This week I had to help a very seniour manager out with a piece of work and we compared commutes. Mine: 3 hour round trip. His: 10 minute tube ride. I informed him that I had the better deal as living in the country was more preferable to central London regardless of the commuting effort. It turns out that maybe that’s not a great thing to say to someone almost at the top of a company that employs 60,000 people. But nevermind. We know it’s true, don’t we?
