Examples of the services we offer:
INVASIVE SPECIES MANAGEMENT We specialize in invasive plant education, identification,
and control. Depending on available grant funding, we may be able to offer free site visits and even free treatment or
removal of certain noxious weeds.
Species of concern include: Japanese Knotweed, Spotted
Knapweed, Garlic Mustard, Purple Loosestrife, Phragmites,
Wild Parsnip, and others.
Our staff includes Michigan Certified Pesticide Applicators.
FORESTRY ASSISTANCE Our Forest and Wildlife Management Assistance Program
promotes stewardship of forest resources on private
lands. The program makes assistance available for wildlife
habitat, timber production, tree planting, recreation, and
forest health, as well as urban forestry and backyard wild-
life. We provide on site consultation, basic written infor-
mation, and referrals to other service providers free of
charge. Management suggestions are based on sound re-
source science and the landowner’s goals.

What is a Conservation District?
Michigan's Conservation Districts are "unique"
local units of State Government that utilize state,
federal, and private sector resources to solve
today's conservation problems.
The guiding philosophy of Conservation Districts
is that decisions on conservation issues should be
made at the LOCAL level, by LOCAL people.
The District staff, guided by a publicly elected
board of directors, provides technical assistance
along with partner agencies to county residents.
The Alger Conservation District brings residents
of Alger County forestry assistance; conservation
implementation cost-share opportunities; a soil
erosion and sedimentation control program;
technical and educational assistance for water
quality concerns; educational seminars; annual
tree, shrub, and native plant sales; stream health
monitoring; invasive plant management; and much
more!
These services are in jeopardy as recent budget
cuts have left Michigan Conservation Districts
with no funding other than what they can raise
for themselves. Michigan Conservation Districts
are a vital part of a healthy local environment and
economy. Please take a moment out of your busy
day to call or write to your local representatives
to show your support of Michigan Conservation
Districts and help to restore the much-needed
funding that they've lost.

WORKSHOPS AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS Throughout the year we organize a variety of FREE events geared toward adults, youth, or both. These include edu-cational workshops related to our programs, volunteer action days, information booths, presentations for schools and community groups, boat washes, the Agri-palooza youth conservation fair, and any other opportunity we can find to interact with our community!
WILDFLOWER, TREE, & SHRUB SALES Each spring we put together a catalog of native plants and cultivars that we carefully choose for their suitability to our unique climate. Our selections include a variety of conifers, fruit trees, berries, ground cover, wetland spe-cies, hardwood trees, shrubs, and wildflowers! By ordering through us, customers can be certain they’re getting healthy plants well-suited to the local environment, and that their money will be used to make a positive im-pact on the community.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR WILDLIFE AND POLLINATOR HABITAT
STREAM HEALTH MONITORING In association with MSU Extension, we help recruit and instruct volunteers to collect and identify macroinverte-brate specimens from local streams to gauge their health.
