BOB BOICE, A HOMETOWNE LEGACY

Bob Boice born July 8th 1933 --- died March 21st 2013 is remembered asa patient easy going farmer with a love for his community. He grew up onGoode St and spent the next 77 years farming the land and raising hisfamily. Bob married his lifelong love, Joyce B. MimMack, almost 60 yearsago on October 4, 1953. They carved their life out milking cows, growingapples, peaches, plums, cherries and babies all while they rebuilt thebeautiful saltbox colonial that had stood on the land since 1780.During his “free time” (farmers don't have free time) Bob was a volunteerfirefighter for the BH-BL Fire Department. He served as a Burnt Hillsvolunteer fireman for 58 years, acting as Lieutenant, Assistant Chief (15years), Chief (three years) and Commissioner (10 years). Ironically the lastcall he made as Chief was to his own home in 1975. The home they spentso many years raising their family in burned to the ground that spring. With the help and generosity of good neighbors and friends the Boicefamily was back in their home before the winter of 1975.Bob drove bus for 20 years for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake schools, devotinga great deal of time transporting athletes to events. Bob also dedicated16 years to the Town of Ballston as councilman and played an importantrole in the construction of the highway garage, Community Library andTown Hall. Bob was truly dedicated to the Town of Ballston and the BurntHills community. He left a behind wonderful legacy of purpose by serving his communityand love of his family. Bob left the world a better place than it was whenhe entered it. Not by accident but because of his dedication andcommitment to his neighbors, family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Joyce and siblings, William Boice (Ellen) andEdith Older. Bob had five children, Shirley Kane of Ithaca, NY, DebraHodgson (Robert) Ballston Spa, Bonny Boice (Gary Bojarski) LakePleasant, NY, Robert C. Boice Jr. (Sharron) of Morrisonville, NY, andKathleen Boice DeSocio (Chris) Genoa, NV. Bob was Pa to his sevengrandchildren, Dennis Hodgson (Stephanie), Saratoga, Nathan Hodgson(Kate), Middlegrove, Lauren Seward, Scotia, Derek Seward, Rochester, NY,Bobbi Boice III, Burlingame, CA, and Tyler and MaKenzie Boice ofMorrisonville. Bob enjoyed watching his two great-granddaughters, Mollyand Tess Hodgson. He was Uncle Bob to more than 50 nieces andnephews across the country. We thank him and his family for their commitment to making YourHometowne a better place to live in.

A message from The theme this month is about “returninghome”. On our cover is a male IndigoBunting; this little bird, nicknamed the'Blue Canary” sings with cheerful gustothrough late spring and early summerthroughout North America. It oftenmigrates by night, using the stars tonavigate. Its habitat is farmland, brushareas, and open woodland. Like all other

blue birds, Indigo Buntings lack blue pigment. Their jewel-likecolor comes instead from microscopic structures in the feathers that refract and reflect blue light, much like the airborne particlesthat cause the sky to look blue. Another favorite in our area is the Hummingbird; Ruby-throatedHummingbirds arrived along the gulf coast at the end of February. Our hummingbirds will return in early May, but you can put out a feeder in late April that might help early returnees or those birdsmigrating further north. If you do, you still have to change thenectar regularly (every 4-6 days) even if no hummingbird visits it.You can find all your birding needs at Country Acres on Rt 50. The largest migratory bird in upstate New York is known as TheSnowbird. This clever bird travels in a number of ways. They can be spotted regularly in large RV's along the I-95 corridor or inbeautiful boats slowly traveling up through the inter-coastalwaterways from Florida to our region and beyond. Many of themexpect to be fed and watered upon arrival so be sure yourrefrigerator is stocked with New York delicacies such as grain fedbeef and beer. During their stay in Florida they have been deprivedof real pizza, maple syrup and Greek Diners. Be prepared to indulgeyour snowbird visitor with some outings to our locally ownedeateries. Be warned, they have been known to seek shelter in theirfriends and relatives homes so be sure you have a fresh set of sheetsin the guest room! Don't forget May 12th is Mother's Day. This issue is filled withideas and places to bring your Mom to celebrate her special day. If a backyard picnic is her style it is also National Barbeque month,so be sure to load up at Garofalo's with the best in fresh hand cutselections and celebrate it right! That said and in the spirit of fairplay and equal time it is also National Salad Month, so eat healthymy friend, I'm not making this up. While you are enjoying the much deserved warm weatherremember to watch for motorcycles, keep your swimming pool gate locked, teach your children to swim and practice safe fun! Love your family and remember Real Family does not come fromyour blood. It is the people standing beside you when no one else is.

CHOOSE YOUR HARD I know why you've been reluctant to jump on thefitness bandwagon, and I'm not blaming you for it.Fitness is hard! Want to know just how hard? Here's aglimpse into the Fit Life:FIT LIFE TRUTH #1: EXERCISE COUNTSLace up your shoes and hit the gym instead of gettingextra sleep, watching TV or doing whatever else it isthat you'd rather be doing.FIT LIFE TRUTH #2: NUTRITION COUNTS

Choose your meals based on the nutritional makeup, limit your intake ofsimple carbohydrates and get lots of protein and fiber in each meal.FIT LIFE TRUTH #3: NO ROOM FOR JUNKTurn down your favorite junk foods - even when you really, really want it.Cut simple sugars and harmful, processed fats out of your diet completely.FIT LIFE TRUTH #4: PUSH HARDERPush your body to be stronger, faster and better during each workout. Don'tsimply go through the motions in your routine.FIT LIFE TRUTH #5: CALORIES COUNTLimit your total calories to within an appropriate range for your size andgoals. Remember, even healthy calories can add up to weight gain whenyou're not careful. Now let's take a look at with the NOT-Fit life looks like...NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #1: BE SEDENTARYSpend your spare time being as sedentary as possible. The less that you useyour muscles, the more aches, pains and mobility limitations you'llexperience.NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #2: EAT FOR TASTEEat whatever sounds and tastes good. The human palate is naturally drawnto items that are high in sugar, salt and fat. You'll find your weight increases, and your energy levels plummet.NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #3: JUST SAY YESTo your favorite junk food, that is. Your indulgent eating is going to raise thenumber on your scale higher.NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #4: GET COMFORTABLEYour goal is to be comfy. This means use as little muscular strength as youcan on a daily basis, leaving you with less lean tissue. Since lean tissueraises your metabolism, a drop in lean tissue means you'll be burning fewercalories at rest than ever before.NOT-FIT LIFE TRUTH #5: MORE IS BETTERThere's no limit on how much you eat - in fact more is better. As a result youoften feel sluggish from your overloaded digestive system. And yourmotivation to exercise and turn your NOT-Fit Life into a Fit Life gets dimmerand dimmer. So which life is harder? The Fit Life? Or the NOT-Fit Life? The truth is thatboth of these lifestyles are hard. Just depends on which hard you'd ratherdeal with.If you'd like the Fit Life then take action now by calling or emailing me todayto get started on a fitness program that's going to be hard.

BENEFICIARIES FOR LIFE INSURANCEMany of us own life insurance policies. Purchasingan insurance policy is important for the needs of aspouse and children. Your plan is to make surethose funds are set aside to help a spouse orprovide for the education of your children.

What do you do if a child is too young to receive the insurance funds?Sometimes, people will substitute a parent or sibling as an alternatebeneficiary. These persons, however, may end up having health problems, divorce and/or bankruptcy. All of a sudden, creditors of the alternatebeneficiary may end up with the insurance funds.

A planning option is to create a Will with a Trust for Minor children in theWill. If you pick someone to be a guardian for the children in a Will, thenthe guardian will only manage the funds until the children are 18. You canset an older age for final distribution to a child. Trusts can also beestablished if a child has disabilities.

A properly funded trust also will be protected from your own creditors. The alternate beneficiary should be the Trustee of the Trust, and not theEstate, on the beneficiary form.

Life insurance is an important part of your financial plans. You shouldconsult an attorney about your situation. Please contact me to consult onplanning for yourself or someone in need. It will be my pleasure to help.

Coding, what does it mean?

This month Ken shares a crossover story about coding, a term thatis not exclusive to vehicles. In today's world of technologybasically anything that “runs” has a computer in the backgroundkeeping everything right and it was a broken refrigerator thatprovided this month's tip.

It seems that Ken's refrigerator stopped being a refrigerator andbecame a closet for food without holding a temperature thatmost food requires unless you're a fan of mold and spoiled milk.Enter the repairman, set up by a big Store as part of the pre-paid“warrantee”. Now mind you the guy who showed up had no cluethat his “client” aka Ken Maynard is a pretty savvy repair guyhimself and would be paying close attention to his visit.

After unplugging the refrigerator and fumbling around with aflashlight coupled with a call to home base- the “expert”repairman declared that the compressor was shot and needed tobe replaced (I'm hoping that those who know Ken can visualizewhere this is going). Needless to say after a very brief explanationas to why he

#1 Never looked at anything

#2 He admitted that he no clue on how to check out the unit, thathe was “new” to the repair business, like Ken say's a “Greenhorn”,He was escorted to the door and asked to not come back.

After calling a seasoned repairman who actually took off a paneland found a fan that was stuck, he freed it up and informed Ken

that the first guy made one of the worst mistakes that could bemade; he unplugged the refrigerator thereby clearing the codethat could be read by a reader if all else failed.

The moral of this story is this, unlike a refrigerator that will clearthe codes by simply unplugging it, shutting your vehicle off doesnot clear the code and it seems a lot of people know that thereare a few places around who offer a “free” use of a scanner tocheck out the code and opportunity to clear it and sell you partsto fix it, assuming you understand the sequence of codes andwhich ones lead to the other.

Ken suggests that if a check engine light comes on and your nota mechanic with training in diagnostics, don't run to whoeveroffers use of the OBD II (on board diagnostics) Scanner to see thecode and then clear it, by doing so you have wiped out theopportunity to locate your problem and will require time runningyour vehicle to cycle the system in order for the problem topresent itself back into the computer.

And the bigger point is to remember is that a check engine lightdoesn't always mean a big problem or an expensive repair isneeded. However, driving a car with the check engine light oncould mean that you are doing further damage to the engine, depending on the problem. It's always best to get the vehiclechecked at your earliest convenience and by a reputable mechanicwith the skills and tools to do it right, so if your check engine lightcomes on, don't be a hero and try to fix what you don'tunderstand, stop by KENS SUNOCO and let his team under thehood to fix it right the first time.

INVESTORS CAN LEARN FROM EARTH DAY'S LESSONSOn April 18th, we observed Earth Day. First celebratedin 1970, Earth Day has grown into an internationalmovement whose goal is to raise awareness of theneed to take action to sustain a healthy, sustainableenvironment. You can do your part through recyclingand other measures, but you can also apply some ofthe lessons of Earth Day to your financial situation -

and, in particular, to your approach to investing.Make the most of your existing resources. One of the most valuablelessons of Earth Day deals with the need to be responsible managers of theresources we have. As an investor, it's important to maximize the benefitsof the resources to which you have access. For example, are youcontributing as much as you can afford to your 401(k)? At the very least, youshould put in enough to earn your employer's match, if one is offered.Take advantage of a favorable environment. Underlying all Earth Dayactivities is the goal of creating a healthy environment in which to live. Youmay also benefit from a positive investment environment - and that's whatwe appear to be experiencing, at least in terms of low interest rates, lowinflation and favorable equity valuations. So in this atmosphere, look forthose investment opportunities that are appropriate for your situation.Don't over-consume. Excess consumption has played a big role in causingsome of the environmental issues we face. Consequently, many Earth Dayprograms teach us to get by with less, or at least to avoid acquiring morethan we need. To translate this philosophy into your investment habits, takea close look at the number of trades you make. Are you constantly sellingold investments and buying new ones in the hopes of capturing higherreturns? This type of trading can result in significant fees, costs and taxes. Moreover, this constant activity, with all its starts and stops, may detractfrom your ability to follow a consistent investment strategy.Avoid “toxic” investment moves. The motivation to create Earth Daydeveloped, in part, by the growing awareness that industrial toxins wereaffecting our air and water. And you can find many toxic investment moves, too. To illustrate: Many people chase after “hot” stocks after hearing aboutthem from friends or relatives, or seeing them touted by so-called experts inthe media. But by the time these people acquire the hot stocks, the stocksmay already have cooled off. Furthermore, these stocks may not have beenappropriate for these investors in the first place. Another potentially “toxic”investment move is to try to time the market - that is, try to buy investmentswhen prices are low and sell when they're high. In theory, this is a good wayto invest; in practice, it's almost impossible to predict market highs and lowsInstead, consider buying quality investments and holding them for the longterm, or at least until your needs change.By following these Earth Day-related suggestions, you can help yourself makeprogress toward a healthier - and possibly more productive - investmentenvironment. And that's worth celebrating more than once a year.Christopher Nyhan runs the Edward Jones office in Burnt Hills, NY.

Remember the days when most of your shoppingwas done at local stores owned by people in thecommunity? Remember when downtown was thecenter of activity because of the local stores?Remember when running errands meant staying inyour own community or area, seeing friends andneighbors and having a chance to “catch-up”? Maybelife is still this way for you. For many people, however,

shopping and running errands means frequenting large retail chains, indistant retail centers, in the company of strangers from many differentcommunities. Shopping is not quite so local and neighborly anymore. But this is beginning to change. “Buy local” is the new slogan, and it'sgrowing fast. And now more than ever before, you can benefit from doingit. We are happy to see that you are recognizing the value of our localbusinesses and the contribution they make to our communities.Today, more than ever before, local business owners are seeing the value intheir own communities and rewarding those consumers who participate inkeeping it local by offering them special “Local” offers and exclusive “BuyLocal” deals. A growing number of businesses have joined groups like LocalLiving In (LLI), the SBA or Downtown Business Association (DBA) to promotethe member deals and display the organization decals near doors andregisters to bring awareness to their efforts. Look for them as you enter, orask the business owner if they offer any kind of Buy Local discount. But it's not just about the discount. In past years many of ourdowntowns have become lifeless and vacant as local businesses have beenreplaced by large retail development in outlying areas. What we need tokeep in mind, locally owned businesses are crucial to revitalizing ourdowntowns. Lively downtowns filled with an array of goods and servicesmake in-town living appealing, helping to counter sprawl. Downtownbusinesses also tend to be clustered together, increasing citizen interactionand contributing to a vital downtown feeling. We can already see howmany local government officials are helping by working with businessleaders to make the “downtown” experience more appealing.Enhancements to infrastructure, advertisements and overall curb appeal bymaking storefronts more vibrant and inviting. It's more than just building strong communities -- There's much to be saidfor the civic value of doing business with our neighbors-people who greetus by name, send their kids to school with ours, and have a vested interestin the long-term well-being of the community. Local merchants oftensponsor cultural events and take a leadership role in communityorganizations. If you look around your town, it's clear they contributesignificant time and money to local causes. Just note the names on theBaseball Jersey, or that banner hanging in the outfield. These businessescare about OUR Communities.Simply said, “Keep It Local” -- Local business owners need YOU to helpthem, thereby helping yourself get back to that “Downtown” lifestyle we allremember.

On Saturday April 6, 2013 theYour Hometowne sponsoredMortensen MotorsportsRacing Team and their driverMark Mortensen started the2013 racing season with astrong showing in the 602Sportsman feature at theirhome track, the Track ofChampions, Fonda Speedwaywith a brand new 2013 Teocar and a new crate motor inthe car for the start of the2013 racing season.Mark finished his qualifyingheat race in the secondposition and also set the fastest time in the heat race event with a lapof 20.903 sec. placing him in the fifth starting position for the 20-lapfeature event. When the checkered flag flew Mark finished second inthe event and also set the quickest lap in the feature event with a timeof 22.260 secs. After a rain out on Saturday, April 13 the Mortensen Motorsports #1Mwas back in action at Fonda on Saturday, April 20 and it turned out tobe a very exciting evening for the Your Hometowne sponsored race car.A special thanks as well goes out to our newest sponsor on the #1M,Ben Iwinski from Iwinski Excavating!Past champions in the 602 Sportsman division John Scarborough andMark Mortensen started the 20-lap feature event on the front row withScarborough leading early. When Scarborough switched lanes to theoutside going into turn one, Mortensen switched lanes as well, takingthe low line to take overthe lead.By lap five Mortensen and Scarborough were a straightaway ahead ofthird place runner Tim Hartman Jr. with the first of five cautions out atthat point to close up the field. Three consecutive restarts werenecessary to get the race going again as each time the green flag flewto start the race the yellow would be back out again for another wreck. When the race was finally restarted Scarborough was the new raceleader as Ricky Quick was the new third place car after getting byHartman with Floyd Billington also getting by Hartman for the fourthposition.

The final caution of the eventwas out on lap six for apileup in turn two and asingle file restart wasordered by race directorMarty Beberwyk. Once therace was restartedScarborough was able to putsome distance betweenhimself and Mortensen andby lap nine he held a halfstraightaway advantage.Scarborough and Mortensenwere switching lanes lapafter lap to try to find thefast way around the track

with Scarborough trying to maintain the lead while Mortensen wastrying to figure out how to reel him in. By lap 14 that is exactly whatMortensen did as he caught Scarborough as they went into turn oneand going into turn two Mortensen was able to get under Scarboroughto take the lead.Once he got the lead, Mortensen was able to pull away with the onlything slowing him down being lap cars which he had to negotiatearound for the final four laps. Mortensen was able to go on for the win,the eighth of his career in the division over Scarborough, Quick,Billington, and Ray Zemken. With his 28th birthday just a day prior to his win, the victory was agood way for Mortensen to celebrate with Fonda Speedway announcerJosh Phillips making the call to the finish line saying "get out the cakeand light up the candles Happy Birthday Mark Mortensen.""That was a fun race," Mortensen said in victory lane. "I didn't knowif I was going to be able to get by him when I was chasing him andonce I got by I didn't know where he was. This car is new for this yearand it is going real good right now."While the Mortensen Motorsports Team was celebrating their victory atFonda their crew chief Brett Mortensen was getting ready to competein a race of his own on Sunday, April 21 called the Seneca 7 which washeld in Geneva, NY. The Terwilliger barn and cobblestone farmhouse on Saratoga Rd is nostranger to controversy or discussion. 65 years ago in June of 1948, beforethe development of the Rt 50 corridor, owner S.L Terwilliger approachedthe Town of Glenville forpermission to rent the barn for acabinet shop. Since it wasadjacent to not only the airportbut the GE lab as well, history willrecord that permission wasdenied citing that the requiredzoning change would beimpractical as a residentialsection due to the noise of theplanes and the experimental workat the GE lab!Today the GE Lab (R&D) is in

Niskayuna and the farmhouse islong gone having been replacedwith an automated car wash butand the barn remains; nowcolorfully painted and home to abusiness run by Lisa Durand as“La Moda Lisa”. So much has changed outside over the years howeverinside the barn secrets remain, some of them noisy, some of themmischievous, some hidden, while some are lurking in the shadows thatmake up the 3 stories of the old dairy barn. The evening of April 5th 2013 nationally known and widely acclaimedPsychic Chip Coffey along with the Northeast Paranormal Societyrepresented by Josh and Amanda hosted an informal gathering at the barnfor a few lucky people, me included. Listening to his experiences that hewrote about in “ Growing up Psychic”,;Chip recounted his childhoodgrowing up in a haunted house that presented disembodied voices thatnot only communicated with the people, they were heard calling the dogswho lived there! Chip went on to explain the various electronic devices you see on the TVshows that capture the spirits presence and how they work. The audiencewas comprised of not only the invited guests but the spirits who are stillattached to the barn. In a private session on the second floor that beganwith a protective prayer, the spiritual inquest quickly manifested into thephysical as the spirits began manipulating “Mag Lights” sitting on a standin the center of the room. For the next hour unseen hands turned them onand off in direct response to questions posed by Chip AND the audience-

this is where it really got intense. Chip was holding a conversation withthe dead-and they were answering. If you could have seen our collectivefaces when this unfolded you would know this was no prank. Since no

cameras were allowed during thesession, my recording of the night willpreserve the event, to be reviewedover and over again… it wascompletely unbelievable to witness, Iwill let those who attended attest tothe events we saw and shared. These lights were not a “gimmick” ortrick, they are stock hardware storeMag Lights that require the cap to berotated in order to make them light. The explanation is if you rotate thecap so the light 'just turns off” and thecontacts are in close proximity but nottouching, electrical impulses or energycan “jump” and complete the circuit, lighting the lamp.As Chip began to challenge the spiritsto communicate by knocking or

turning on one of the lights, as sure as I sit here after hearing a knock, one the lights came on… the light TURNED ITSELF ON and then whenChip asked the light to go out, it did but the other light came on as if totaunt us.Multiple spirits were presenting themselves this evening as the lightsflickered at times and if all this wasn't enough, while recording the eventusing the recording app on my Iphone, MY PHONE lit up along with theMag lights. Thank God I have witnesses to this as my phone rested in thepalm of my hand yet appeared to react and turn on and off with the lights. In addition to the Mag lights another device was presented from theNortheast Paranormal Society who had been monitoring the evening witha piece of equipment called “Franks Box”, an EVP device wherein voicesfrom the static appeared to call out names; names of people in the roomthat Chip had never met. One in particular was an employee of Lisa's whobasically FREAKED when her name was called out.The Subject matter of the evening will remain with the folks who came. Idecided that it would be inappropriate to divulge as it was clearly personalat many levels and better left to those who attended to share at theirdiscretion. One point that must be made clear is there is without questiona force or energy at work or play in La Moda Lisa. STAY TUNED!

Coffee loversourselves, we recognize this desirable quality, which is why we've infusedthe herb Bacopa Monnieri to give you more of what you want and expectfrom your coffee-brain boosting qualities. Why Bacopa Monnieri? It has along history of use as a popular brain tonic to increased mental clarity, improved mental and brain functions, enhance clear thinking and supportlearning and memory.BACOPA MONNIERI The bacosides (saponins) in Bacopa appear to play a protective role in thesynaptic functions of the nerves of the hippocampus, the seat of memory.Nerve impulses are transmitted across the synapses (the gap between theneurons, over which impulses lead to their learning), and their degenerationis believed to contribute to impaired memory and cognition. Use of Bacopais thus thought to improve learning skills andimpaired memory. Additionalbrain effects of Bacopa demonstrated in lab research include reduction ofboth anxiety and depression. Biochemically, these nervous system effectshave been attributed to an enhancement of the effects of theneurotransmitters acetylcholine and, possibly serotonin or GABA.SHARPEN UP When formulating our energy + mind blend, we infused an herb calledcentella asiatica (or gotu kola) to add something your tall cupfromStarbuck's will never provide, mental clarity. Why gotu kola? It has beenused as a medicinal herb for thousands of years in India, China andIndonesia toimprove mental clarity.GOTU KOLA It is regarded as one of the most spiritual and rejuvenating herbs inAyurveda and is used to improve meditation. It is said to develop thecrown chakra, the energy center at the top of the head, and tobalance the right and left hemispheres of the brain, which the leaf issaid to resemble.Gotu kola has been referred to as "food for the brain." This oriental herbhas demonstrated mild tranquilizing, anti-anxiety and anti-stress effects, aswell as improving mental functions such as concentration and memory. Ithas a calming effect on the body and is chiefly used to support the centralnervous system. These beneficial qualities offer some hope for those whohave challenges focusing, as the herb has demonstrated the ability to havea soothing and relaxing effect on an overactive nervous system. As a brain tonic, gotu kola is said to aid intelligence and memory. Itstrengthens the adrenal glands while cleansing the blood to treat skinimpurities. It is said to combat stress and depression, energize flaggingmental powers, increase libido, ward off a nervous breakdown andimprove reflexes. It energizes the central nervous system and rebuildsenergy reserves.

Boys State is a program of The American Legion developed from the conceptthat youth should be offered a better perspective of the practical operationof government; that the individual is an integral part, and commensuratelyresponsible, for the character and success of his government.

One of our local students, Patrick McGuinness has thedubious honor of being the first selection from the BurntHills district. An 11th grade student at BH-BL High School,Patrick saw a bulletin at school that captured his interestregarding the program; he decided to apply andforwarded his resume.

Patrick is the son of John and Simone McGuinness, he hasa brother Thomas who is currently at West Point and asister Mary, a freshmen at Burnt Hills High School. Onreview Patrick has much to offer. He is an Eagle Scout who was“tapped out' into the Order of The Arrow and is currently theDen Chief for Pack 83 from Stevens School, a position he hasheld for 5 years. Patrick is a Cross Country distance runner witha desire to seek a career in Marine Engineering with an eye onattending the US Merchant Marine Academy, Clarkson, orSUNY Maritime. Patrick isn't ruling out otherpossibilities that will be presented at the upcomingprogram being held at the SUNY Campus inMorrisville in June.

He was interviewed by John Ryan from the AirNational Guard as his candidate and Bill McBride fromthe American Legion who oversaw the process. Both werevery impressed with his composure and focus and to quoteJohn, “Pat presented himself as true gentlemen with a solidmoral compass and desire to learn”.

As such, this program is an activity of high educational value, born of a needfor youth training in practical citizenship. To elaborate - Boys' State is easilyclassified as a Leadership Action Program wherein qualified male highschool juniors participate in a practical government course designed todevelop in the young citizens a working knowledge of the structure ofgovernment and to impress upon them the fact that their government is justwhat they make it.

Boys' State is not a summer camp! Although there will be designatedrecreation times, Boys' State is NOT a picnic - NOT an outing - NOT a sportscamp. Sponsoring groups are asked to note that Boys' State is in no way arehabilitative, disciplinary, or recreational camp. Only young men withoutstanding qualifications in leadership, character, scholarship, service, andcitizenship who will have a serious attitude toward an intensive citizenshiptraining program should be selected. Appearance, neatness, and goodgrooming are a must. Attitude and appearance go hand-in-hand.

The image projected by candidates to Boys' State reflects upon the youth ofAmerica. The Boys' State County Chairmen and Post Chairmen are remindedthat the selection of Boys' State candidates is a judgment of primeimportance that will reflect on the quality and success of this AmericanismYouth Program of The American Legion.

Physical fitness is an integral part of Boys' State. There willbe time set aside for a physical program to include

calisthenics and marching to meals and assemblies toprepare the boys for the parade which is one of the highpoints of the program. What Are the Objectives of Boys'

State?

Naturally, a program of this scope and magnitude encompassesmany objectives, all of which are important, however, the objectives

we feel are the most important and those for which we strive the hardest toattain are as follows.

A. To develop civic leadership and pride in American Citizenship. It is ourearnest hope that each young man who attends Boys' State will return tohis community a better citizen than when he left and that he will have adesire to demonstrate this fact by his willingness to make civic contributionswhich will help make his community a better place in which to live.

B. To stimulate a keen interest in the detailed study of our government.

C. To incite in these young citizens a determination to maintain our form ofgovernment.

D. To develop in these young men a full understanding of our Americantraditions and belief in the United States.

E. The American Legion aims to inculcate a sense of individual obligation totheir community, state, and nation in these young men and to charge themwith the safeguarding of the principles of America -

Democracy, Justice, and Freedom - the legacy of their forefathers.

Your Hometowne is PROUD to have had Patrick selected for this opportunityand wish him well in his educational and career endeavors.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT SOLUTION?All of my contact lens patients are used to theseries of questions I ask during every contact lensfollow-up. One of the many questions I ask is“what cleaner are you using?” The answers varyfrom “whatever is on sale” to “the stuff you toldme to use.” Often I am asked if it really matterswhat they use.

The answer is most definitely YES!You may have noticed that grocery stores and pharmacies sell store-branded contact lens care products, also known as "private label"products. Often they are considerably cheaper than name-brand products.Should you use them? These products are safe and FDA-approved, or they couldn't be sold. Butthere are potential problems. Often private label products are made fromolder formulations, which don't offer the same advantages as newerproducts. But here's the bigger problem. As you know, you shouldn't switch productswithout consulting your doctor to make sure the new solution is compatiblewith your lenses. Let's say that you buy a bottle of Store-brand X, bring itto your doctor, and he gives you the OK. You use the product, andeverything is dandy.Next time you buy Store-brand X, it may not be the same product. That'sbecause the store doesn't, of course, make its own solution. They buy it froma supplier. If a better deal comes along, they might switch suppliers - andeven formulations - but still sell the revised product under the "Store-brandX" name. And the revised formulation may or may not be right for your eyesor your particular contact lenses. So even if you are cleaning your lenses as instructed, if you are using thewrong product, it may be less effective or even harmful to the contact lensand your eye healthIf you wear contacts, it is vital that you understand the importance of properlens care. Properly caring for your lenses can prevent serious eye infections, some that could even cause blindness. Most importantly, clean and disinfect your contact lenses once a day. If youwear extended wear contacts, clean and disinfect the lenses as soon as youremove them, unless they are designed to be discarded immediately afteruse. Not only will your eyes be safer and healthier, but your contact lenses willbe more comfortable to wear, too.

HELLO MAY...IT'S ME AND I AM BACK!Let me begin by saying that I missed the heckout of ya all last month. It was a tough one.You know we all have our ups and our downs. The downs seemed to out weigh all the rest forme and yet as the days moved away so did thedowns. Leaving in its wake bluer and warmerskies. Ok, I know it rained all the time too, butyou know the saying... April showers bring

May flowers. And I am ready for those flowers - bring 'em ON!!It was simple really...even a bit funny! This and that was going on. I found myself thinking too much.Worrying too much. Not paying attention enough and allow it allto take over. We all have our "stuff" going on. Work, play, ourfamilies, kids and our health. When any of these fail, we findourselves in turmoil. It takes time to make a game plan, time tosurround yourself with those who can help you. It takes time toallow yourself to be helped. As the sun shines brighter and theworries fade away you can once again go about your business.Resting up before the next blast of confusion and chaos. Here comes the simple and funny part...I was driving home from my therapist's office (yes, even the brightand shiny people need someone to talk to sometimes..) I called mybrother. I called to check in. I told him that I was heading homefrom the session and I said to him, "here's the thing... my life hasbeen crazy and now, it is quiet." As I laughed I said I cannotbelieve that I am struggling with NOT having a bunch of issues inmy life. Hmm, how funny is that? I have found it hard tonegotiate a life without having deadlines, dates and appointmentswith doctors. He reassured me that the chaos would soon find itsway back and I would wish for this time again right now. He saidto just enjoy it. Simple!I changed when I got home into my work clothes, packed a lunchand headed out to a job that I love. I am looking forward togetting home and grabbing my son (who actually likes to spendtime with me)to head out and go boxing. Looking forward towarmer weather to plant some of those May flowers we keephearing about. The purple patio furniture is out and the patio hasbeen pressure washed. Lookin' good if I do say so myself. It mayjust be the perfect setting for a Mother's Day breakfast! Simple! So for now I will put my feet up and pour a glass of fresh brewed

ice tea and simply enjoy that I have nothing going on. Enjoy thefeeling that everything in the world is right and I do not haveanything to worry about today. As the flowers of May bloom, stepout of the chaos and confusion, even for just a moment and enjoythe peace and quiet of nothing to do.As always, I wish you peace, joy, a Happy Mother's Day and muchto do about nothing!

0HAPPY SPRINGEach month I share “Decorating Tips from TheSpeckled Hen” and introduce you to newways to decorate your home with primitives.Last month I gave you an overview of designand colors. This month let's add onto that withsome tricks and tips to painting and

distressing furniture. A new coat of paint can completely transform an item- it can add character and style to many types of decor. And it's easy to do! The first step is to determine what you'd like the finished piece to look like.Determine how many layers (colors) you will have. If you'd like to see anold paint color exposed (as if the piece has been painted many times over),you'll need to paint two (or more) colors. This technique allows you tocreate more interest and age in your projects. If you'd prefer the bare-woodto peak through, you just need one color. Here's the materials you'll need to get started: satin latex paint for thebase coat, satin latex paint or a wood stain for the top coat, painting tools, candle (or a bar of soap - needs to be a pure soap like Dove or Ivory),medium-grade steel wool, sandpaper, tack cloth, polyurethane to finish(optional). And away we go…

1. Lightly sand the object you want to distress. If the object already hasa finish (previously painted or varnished), sand all surfaces well. After thesanding, wipe the piece with a tack cloth.

2. Paint the entire piece in the base color you've selected (a bright colorwill peek through the top coat best).

3. For the bare-wood look, when the base coat is dry, start sanding offareas that would naturally end up distressed - places where hands wouldhave held it, or corners that could easily get nicked. Be sure to stop beforeyou go too crazy with the sanding, and then wipe the entire piece with thetack cloth.

4. For the layered look, rub candle wax (or soap) on the areas whereyou'd like to see color show through. This creates a "waxy" coating thatallows the paint to be sanded off easier to reveal the color underneath.

5. Then paint over the base coat and the wax. Cover everything well.6. After the paint dries, rub the steel wool over the areas you've waxed.

The steel wool won't harm the rest of the paint enough to worry about -remember, the piece is meant to be distressed, so use it to find the waxedareas. Wipe off the piece with the tack cloth.

7. Don't forget to do the sides and back; you want the entire piece tobe finished!

8. And finally, apply a finish if desired.

And that's it! A beautifully aged piece that has all the character and styleof a one-of-a-kind treasure!

PROPER SAUSAGE GRILLING TECHNIQUE

Of course you can place sausages right on thegrill and cook them the old fashioned way.Thebiggest problem is that people use a highheat and burn the surface before the middlegets cooked. The other problem is that when asausage cooks it leaks juices that can causeflare-ups and add to the burning problem. Toeliminate the burning and the flare-ups youneed to keep the fire low. This increases thecooking time, but lets the sausage cook gentlyand hold in its flavor. Some people will tellyou to puncture the skin, but this will just letthe juices out to start more fires. Keep thesausage casing intact and the heat low.How you serve and eat sausages is importantto the method of cooking. If you are going tobe chopping the sausages up for anotherrecipe, then any method that holds in theflavor will do. If you want to serve thesausages straight up, then take care to cookthem gently to preserve the appearance asmuch as the flavor. As with most meat, as themeat cooks and the proteins set up the juicesget pushed to the center. After obtaining aproper internal temperature (in this case 145degree F) let them rest for about 3 minutesafter coming off the grill to allow the juices tobe reabsorbed away from the center.

Its fun…but NOT a good idea. That’s where problems lurk. When youchoose a game there you have to ALLOW.This gives whoever is on the otherend too much access to your computer. BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW!In 1941, an increasing number of British Airmen found themselves as theinvoluntary guests of the Third Reich and the Crown looked for ways andmeans to facilitate their escape. Now obviously, one of the most helpful aidsto that end is a useful and accurate map. Paper maps had some realdrawbacks -- they make a lot of noise when you open and fold them, theywear out rapidly and if they get wet, they turn into mush.Someone in MI-5 (similar to America's OSS) got the idea of printing escapemaps on silk. It's durable, can be scrunched-up into tiny wads and unfoldedas many times as needed, and makes no noise whatsoever. At that time, therewas only one manufacturer in Great Britain that had perfected the technologyof printing on silk and that was John Waddington, Ltd.When approached by the government, the firm was only too happy to do itsbit for the war effort.By pure coincidence, Waddington was also the U.K. Licensee for the popular

American board game, Monopoly. As it happened, 'games and pastimes' wasa category of item qualified for insertion into 'CARE packages', dispatched bythe International Red Cross to prisoners of war.Under the strictest of secrecy, in a securely guarded and inaccessible oldworkshop on the grounds of Waddington's, a group of sworn-to-secrecyemployees began mass-producing escape maps, keyed to each region ofGermany or Italy where Allied POW camps were regional system. Whenprocessed, these maps could be folded into such tiny dots that they wouldactually fit inside a Monopoly playing piece. As long as they were at it, theclever workmen at Waddington's also managed to add:1. A playing token, containing a small magnetic compass2. A two-part metal file that could easily be screwed together3. Useful amounts of genuine high-denomination German, Italian, and Frenchcurrency, hidden within the piles of Monopoly money!British and American air crews were advised, before taking off on their firstmission, how to identify a 'rigged' Monopoly set -- by means of a tiny red dot,one cleverly rigged to look like an ordinary printing glitch, located in thecorner of the Free Parking square. Of the estimated 35,000 Allied POWS whosuccessfully escaped, an estimated one-third were aided in their flight by therigged Monopoly sets , It's always nice when you can really play that 'Get Outof Jail' Free' card!

like that was the best conversation you've had.
