Church News

Kingston Calendar 2017. Thank you to all those who have sent us photos for the new calendar. Photos will be displayed in the Church from Saturday 3 September – Monday 3 October and at the Tuesday Morning Market on 20/27 September. Please vote for your favourite photo for each month. The calendar will be on sale in good time for Christmas.

Operation Christmas Child Samaritan’s Purse Thank you to everyone who has left shoeboxes at the back of the Church to be covered with Christmas wrapping paper please keep adding to the pile as we are hoping to send as many as possible again this year. Leaflets explaining more about this Charity are included in your Newsletter they contain helpful suggestions about suitable gifts for the children who will receive them; ages range from 2-4. 5-9 and 10-14. Gifts include toothbrush/paste,flannels, soap, stationery things, small cuddly toys, cars and wrapped sweets. Our knit n’ natter group provide wooly hats, mitts/gloves and scarves etc: to add to the boxes; we would like to thank this small band of willing workers who give up a lot of time and energy to help this good cause. We will be packing the shoeboxes in the Reading Room on Saturday, October 22n from 10-12.30pm so please come along and help us either by bringing your gifts on the day or giving them to Jennie Stanley Brae Cottage (810819) or Shioya Walters Scobbiscombe Farm (810259) before hand. There is also a box at the back of the Church for donations or gifts so please give generously as these boxes may be the only Christmas presents these children receive. The boxes begin their journey overseas in November when they are transported to Kingsbridge. Each box costs £3 to send and with the money raised at the Cream Tea event in July we have sufficient funds to send at least 100 but we do need to fill them. After 14 years this will be the final year that Jennie will be organising the event as Shioya will be in charge next year, I’m sure that you will give her just as much support. Local contacts for St James-the- Less, Kingston Church Wardens: Brian Alloway 810692, [email protected] Robert Beard, 810500 [email protected] Both Churchwardens will be pleased to help you find the right person to talk to and help with Church-related arrangements. Please note that all this information is also on the parish website on the Parish Church page.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Devon and Somerset Trading Standards have received reports which suggests rogue traders offering tool/knife sharpening are operating in the Devon area. We would advise residents to exercise caution before agreeing to any work offered by unsolicited doorstep callers. Work can often be of poor quality and cost more than first agreed. If you need to have tools etc. sharpened or any general maintenance works undertaken, take time to get three quotes from reputable businesses you trust and make your decision on who to use in your own time. Get recommendations from family or trusted friends or via www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk. If someone knocks on your door and you are not sure, don't open the door. If you are concerned rogue traders are operating in your area, always report it. If you are concerned someone is at risk, always call the Police with any information on 101 or e-mail [email protected].

A Neighbourhood Development Plan for Kingston

At an Extraordinary Meeting in August, the Parish Council agreed to develop a Neighbourhood Plan for Kingston and to set up a Task Group to start the work immediately. This is much the same procedure as for the Parish Plan. Membership of the Group will include: Cllrs. Flo Watts and Carl Firminger, and three parish residents, Judy Alloway, Richard Dalley and Rae Wallin. Group membership could grow and/or change as the Plan develops and different areas of expertise and skills are needed. There will also be a wider group of parishioners, for both consultation purposes and to join sub groups for focusing on particular policy areas, when these begin to emerge.

If you would like to join this wider group please email or telephone Judy Alloway or Flo Watts, see below. It would be very helpful if you could note any skills and expertise you can bring. There will also be co-opted stakeholders with a role to play in the future implementation of the plan at different times.

What is a Neighbourhood Plan? Kingston published a strong Parish Plan in November 2007. This Plan helped us agree a radical Local Lettings policy with the District Council and has steered Parish Council decision making for some time, as well as being very helpful to quote in grant applications for the village. However it does not have any legal status.

A Neighbourhood Development Plan, once it has been agreed with the parish electorate, the Parish Council and South Hams District Council, will be a part of the Joint Local Development Plan for the South Hams, West Devon and Plymouth. It will form the basis for determining planning applications for the parish. A Neighbourhood Plan can set policies for development and use of land, identify key local priorities, allocate sites for housing or other development. Most importantly it will be YOUR PLAN.

How can you all be involved? You will be consulted first about the issues we should be addressing for the future development of Kingston. This will be through village meetings and on line. A questionnaire survey will follow based on this first trawl for information. Finally the draft plan, will be subject to a Community Referendum in which everyone on the Kingston section of the Electoral Roll can vote. Inevitably all this will take some time, but it will be worth it, as in the meantime Kingston is exposed to the plans of those who do not necessarily have Kingston best interests at heart.

This will involve all of us and it will take your time and energy. Are you prepared to help plan for Kingston’s future?

Kingston Planning Forum (KPF)

KPF is an informal group of Kingston residents, formed in response to recent plans for housing development in the village. We are concerned that these plans are not based on village need or any coherent strategy for ensuring a sustainable future for our village. KPF is committed to ensuring that the final development reflects the needs and particular attributes of Kingston. The members of this core group are:- Judy Alloway (810692); Richard Dalley (810550); Bob Musk (810824) Brian Alloway; Rachel Bush; John Cocks; Eve Jardine-Young; Margaret Kelly; Andrew Kinder;

Jenny Kinder; Penny McFarlane; Stuart McFarlane;; Rae Musk; Thelma Rumsey; John Wurr. They bring a wide range of skills and experience but will also draw on the knowledge, assistance and experience of others. 03 If you would like to contribute your views (as many have already done), please contact us at [email protected] or, if you do not have access to email, telephone Judy, Richard or Bob and we will ensure that you receive paper based information.

Hedge Cutting and Drains! It is that time of year again – Autumn. A kindly reminder please that you ensure your hedgerows are cut back. This allows for correct access for all vehicles from cars to tractors, and for pedestrians to see clearly round corners and not be hidden to traffic by overgrown hedgerows. Over grown hedges will not slow cars down! For everyone’s safety please check your hedge is not causing poor visibility. A special note please, that the height of your tree and hedge over-hang is no less than 3 meters clearance above the road, as tractors and milk lorries etc can have damage caused to them by low tree/hedge clearance. Adopt a drain! If your home is close to a drain, please ensure it is kept clear of fallen leaves and any other obstructions, so that the village has the best chance possible of avoiding floods resulting from Autumn/Winter storms.

Further Reminder! Your Councillors are here for you Eve White. Chairman. (810289) Mervyn Freeman. Vice Chair. (810070) Hayley Swain. (810896) Flo Watts. (810019) Alison Lewis. (811234) Sally Richardson. (810195) Carl Firminger. (810011) Sue Green ~ Parish Clerk. (810270)

CHURCH SERVICES & THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

* Service in traditional language “YOU’RE WORTH IT” According to a recent survey by the Children’s Society, more than a quarter of a million girls in Britain are unhappy with their lives and appearance. The report, based on surveys of thousands of young people, paints a stark and disturbing picture of the pressures many young people face. “We’re expected to be perfect, like Barbie dolls or something and if we don’t then we get bullied,” one young girl said. This lack of self-worth is reflected in other parts of society, with people feeling they’re no good and have no future. It’s a million miles away from the truth, and we need to shout out that everyone is made in God’s image and is incredibly valuable to him. The reality, as we know, is that a perfect complexion doesn’t make a perfect character. The prophet Samuel had to be reminded that “man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart”. Or, as the art critic John Ruskin put it, “remember that the most beautiful things in the world are the most useless; peacocks and lilies, for instance”. Jesus refers to the lilies of the field in the Sermon on the Mount, reminding his hearers that worrying about material things (including how we look) is pointless. Life is the most important, and God offers it abundantly, not just now but in the future, for ever. Each one of us, no matter how plain (or ugly), whatever our shape or age, is sufficiently precious that Jesus was willing to sacrifice his life for us. He promises to be the closest of friends, no matter what happens, and has plans just for us. He loves us, and needs us in his work. So let’s make it our aim to please him, and not the snotty-nosed bully round the corner! And show to others going through a bad patch that they are truly “worth a million dollars.”
