The use of cranberry juice as a natural treatment for urine infections has received new scientific backing. Researchers at the National Taiwan University Hospital carried out 10 trials on 1,500 volunteers in which the use of cranberries was compared to no treatment. The results were published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The researchers discovered that cranberry juice and capsules or tablets containing cranberries can help to ward off some E.coli infections. This is because cranberries contain proanthocyanidins, which can prevent E. coli bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder. E. coli is responsible for over 80% of all urinary tract infections.

The results showed that cranberry juice tended to be particularly effective in women who had experienced recurrent urine and bladder infections. The researchers concluded that more work was needed to confirm the efficacy of the results and also to determine the optimum dose for treatment.

This year the makers of natural energy bar 9bar have set up a sponsorship fund to support endurance and extreme sporting events. They have also selected a diverse group of highly active individuals to create a Team 9bar. Liz Tucker from 9bar commented: “We are targeting sports that generally find it hard to get funding but involve the most inspirational athletes who achieve the most amazing feats. It takes a special sort of dedication and stamina to run, for example, 147 miles non-stop in less than 30 hours or be a single mum and the British number one BMX champion. These are not the sort of sports we generally hear about but 9bar felt they deserved some help and recognition.”The current team members range from ultra runners to triathletes and include a championship kite surfer and the gold medal-winning cyclist Ed Clancy. 9bar plan to sponsor a new team in 2013 so if you know anyone who fits the sporting bill, get in touch via www.9bar.com

Time for a new career? With Chinese Medicine growing in popularity and gaining acceptance in mainstream medicine, there has never been a better time to retrain as an acupuncturist or TuiNa massage therapist. More and more studies are coming out in support of the effectiveness of Chinese Medicine in publications such as the British Medical Journal. Also the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends courses of acupuncture for certain conditions like back pain. “Patients value not only its clinical effectiveness, but also its capacity to change how they cope with a whole range of issues,” says Anne-Sophie Morel, Acupuncturist and Course Leader at the City College of Acupuncture. “But to be able to give your patient your best, the quality of your training is paramount. Our courses at the City College of Acupuncture are almost like apprenticeships so that students develop the confidence and skills necessary to become successful and confident practitioners.” For more information, visit www.citycollegeofacupuncture.com

Cardiovascular health

By Nutritional Therapist Georgie O’Connor for the College of Naturopathic Medicine

For the vast majority of people, cardiovascular disease occurs due to unhealthy ageing brought about as a consequence of poor diet and lifestyle choices such as smoking, high junk food consumption, lack of physical exercise and insufficient intake of fruit and vegetables.

It is undeniable that the UK has an ageing population and, from the age of 35 onwards, the leading causes of death for men and women are dominated by chronic diseases, with cardiovascular disease taking the lead for people over 65. It would be quite foolish to think we don’t need to worry about it until then, however, because cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a condition that can take decades to develop, silent and insidious, carefully masking itself as ‘ageing’ when the truth is, there a huge difference between healthy ageing and unhealthy ageing.

Taking responsibility for our healthWe have survived as a species by being incredibly resilient up to our reproductive years; remember we are the offspring of those who have survived war, famine, plague and pestilence; we carry the genetic heritage of the ultimate survivors. Once the survival of the species has been ensured, however, Mother Nature has no further use for us; it’s up to us to take responsibility for our

health so that we enjoy happy, active and productive years later in life. Just as we grow up and take responsibility for our finances, career and housing, as we get older so too we must take responsibility for our health.

It’s never too late and never too early to take action against CVD; if there are proven health benefits to stopping smoking even if you’re in your 80s, as recently published, then it’s definitely worth taking regular exercise in your 30s and 40s. We all know the public health messages: stop smoking, reduce stress, increase activity levels and cut down/out junk food, red meat and alcohol. Also increase your consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables; ‘five a day’ is the absolute minimum and frozen will do just as nicely.

Consider a ‘wellness’ consultation with a naturopath or naturopathic nutritionist; this is their area of expertise, taking a look at the big picture and helping you to help your body to heal itself. There are lots of herbal, vitamin and mineral supplements that can make all the difference to your efforts, but they are supplements and can only really be effective when the foundations are solid; don’t rely on the popular press for your health advice, get some professional input. Your local health food store isn’t just for supplements; it is a treasure trove of tasty and exciting ways to revamp your diet to help you on your way to fabulous health.

Weight loss link to testosterone levels

Men’s Health

Salvia Officinalis L.folium (sage leaf)

Herbal Helper Bio-Health’s June Crisp introduces...

Sage leaf is a common culinary herb with a historical reputation as a medicinal ‘cure all’. The ‘panacea/cure all’ fame has evolved because of the herb’s successful use over hundreds of years for a vast array of ailments. These range from weaning infants off breast feeding and controlling milk flow to its latest link with cognitive recall and subsequent use in research with Alzheimer’s sufferers.

Sage is an exceptional herb for self-medication and helps with everyday ailments including dyspepsia, wind, gastric upsets and indigestion – it is even thought to be effective against intestinal worms. It can be used safely for steam inhalation during a mild asthma attack and as an effective gargle for throat and gum infections/inflammation due to its natural antiseptic/antibiotic action. Sage is an effective mouthwash for bad breath and, having a naturally occurring antispasmodic action, it can help reduce tension in smooth throat muscle which can

help to calm a dry, tight cough. There are so many health benefits to recommend

this simple herb but one in particular has brought sage into modern medicine. Sage, with its appreciable oestrogenic activity, is ideal for the varied range of menopausal symptoms and menstrual irregularities. And, due to its highly effective anti-hydrotic activity, it is very effective for reducing excessive heat and profuse sweating during the change of life. To many women, Salvia Officinalis, the common, silvery garden sage we see growing in abundance in our hedgerows, has become a lifeline!

Please remember when considering sage as an anti-hydrotic for menopausal hot flushes, that a medicinal, quality licensed product such as Salvian will give the best results.

A new study has found that weight loss could be a potential alternative to testosterone therapy for men who have low levels of the hormone.

The study, which was carried out at St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin, involved a group of 900 overweight, middle-aged men with pre-diabetes. This is a condition whereby blood sugar levels are abnormally high, but not high enough to be classified as Type 2 diabetes.

The men were split into three groups, the first of which were given the diabetes drug metformin, the second a placebo pill and the third were instructed to exercise for 150 minutes a week and eat less fat and fewer calories.

Of the men who followed the diet and exercise programme, about 20% had low testosterone levels at the beginning of the study. After a year this fell to 11%. Among the men taking metformin, 24.8% had low testosterone at the beginning of the study, but this number only dropped to 23.8% a year later. With the placebo group, the number dropped from 25.6% to 24.6%. The researchers said that the men taking the diet and exercise route lost an average of 17lbs over the course of the year and experienced an increase in testosterone levels of 15%.

As a result of their findings the researchers believe that doctors should encourage overweight men with low testosterone levels to lose weight through diet and exercise before resorting to testosterone therapy to increase their hormone levels.

Are you flushed with success?

Fighting fatigue New research has shown that iron supplementation could help reduce fatigue. The study, which was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, involved 198 menstruating women between the ages of 18 and 50 who were either given daily oral supplements of 80mg of prolonged-release ferrous sulfate or a placebo for a 12-week period. The results of the double-blinded randomized controlled trial showed that fatigue levels were reduced by almost 50% in the women who were low in iron but not anaemic.

That’s All Folks!“I never had any trouble sleeping before the television arrived. With its colossal sixty-inch screen it dominated both the freshly painted ‘sunset dream’ bedroom wall and our drab, colourless marriage. Jeff stayed up later and later into the night watching made-for-TV films while I tossed and turned beside him, trying to blot out the moving lights flickering through my eyelids and the screams and gunfire that found their way into my weary skull even on the lowest volume setting. At least I’d enjoyed some peace and quiet at bedtime during his old couch potato days. The ‘bed potato’ was a most unwelcome mutation.… He was watching old Simpsons reruns from the comfort of our duvet, with two pillows squidged between his back and the headboard, a chocolate bar in one hand and the remote control in the other. … I glanced up at the television to see the giant yellow faces of Homer and Marge locked in a passionate embrace. He might be an infuriating fat fool, I thought, but at least Homer still loved his wife. At least he showed her affection. I couldn’t help feeling Marge had the better deal. How bad does your marriage have to be, exactly, to want to trade places with a four-fingered custard-coloured cartoon?… “Do you think I’d look good with blue hair?” I asked him as the credits came up. “The Marge Simpson look?” Jeff just grunted, reaching over to his bedside table for a large slurp of tea. “Or maybe you’d prefer a bit of Betty Boop?” I said, testing to see

if he was even listening. “Long legs…” Nothing. “Big breasts…” Still nothing. If that didn’t get his attention nothing would. “So I was thinking, seeing as how you’re just a fat, lazy, smelly slob who couldn’t care less about our marriage I might just leave you to it. Find someone who appreciates me. What do you think?”“Great.” He took another noisy slurp of tea and turned up the volume...“Or maybe I’ll just retrain as a cartoon character,” I said. “Two dimensional life looks like a lot more fun…”“Uh huh.”“You haven’t been listening to a single word I’ve said, have you?”… At the advert break he yawned and stretched, scratched his crotch through the duvet and then shrugged it right off as he hauled himself out of bed in search of another late night snack.…“It’s back on,” I shouted but Jeff was still downstairs, banging around in the kitchen… And then, as I sat watching, the screen went blank and everything went quiet… “He’s finally gone then.” I spun round to see who had spoken. There was no one there. “Over here.” I looked back at the television. There on the screen, against a plain red background, sat a smartly dressed, square-jawed cartoon figure, grinning and waving…

Get that Good Gut Feeling!Having healthy gut bacteria is important for many aspects of health.

A poor diet, stress and inadequate digestive function are very common in these rushed days. The over-use of antibiotics, and diets centred on sugary and yeasty foods don’t help. The result is frequently poor digestion.

Stressful situations, heavy meals, irregular eating or drinking patterns, or too much fast food can leave your digestion in need of some extra support.

• A healthy acidic environment is created by friendly bacteria in the large intestine, which contributes to the regular evacuation of the bowels. In a gut containing its full quota of friendly bacteria, stools are more likely to be soft, bulky and easy

to pass.

• Intestinal fermentation and gases that cause bloating are less likely to bother you if your levels of friendly bacteria are satisfactory.

• A large number of immune cells are found in the gut and many toxins (including viruses, yeasts and unfriendly bacteria) are neutralised there. The lactic acid produced by friendly bacteria is excellent at killing off pathogens.

• B vitamins are synthesised and may be absorbed in the gut, as may vitamin K.

• Good bacteria can bind to cholesterol and carry it out through the gut.

Molkosan promotes

a healthy internal environment that stimulates the growth of friendly bacteria and impedes the growth of unfriendly bacteria. The trend has been to use probiotics for digestive problems, but the diffi culty is that if the internal environment hasn’t been altered, those probiotics will be killed off just as the original friendly bacteria were. Changing the internal environment for the better increases the likelihood that a probiotic supplement will work well.

L+ lactic acid helps the gut support friendly bacteria.

Detox diet You may associate cold sores with the winter time but, as summer arrives, breakouts can be triggered by UV rays. Silicea Cold Sore Lip Gel is an effective natural treatment for cold sores. What makes Silicea Gel so special is that, apart from its soothing effect on the burning and itching sensation caused by cold sores, it has an unusually high bonding capacity with water and wound secretions. This means that the secretions from the cold sore are bound to the gel and the blisters are systematically dried out. In this way, the spread of the virus is inhibited and the tingling, burning and itching sensations are relieved as the healing process is accelerated. Natural beauty tips for looking great! The big cover up Throughout the summer months it’s essential to wear a good quality sunscreen. Cancer Research UK recommends buying sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15 and which offer protection against UVA rays –

the more stars the better. Also, make sure that your sunscreen hasn’t gone past its

expiry date.Natural and chemical sunscreens

work in different ways. Natural sunscreens tend to

contain the minerals titanium oxide and zinc oxide and they form a protective barrier on the skin,

preventing harmful rays from penetrating

it. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand,

are designed to absorb ultraviolet (UV) rays. There

are some health concerns about the ingredients

used in chemical sunscreens. Some of these chemicals, such as PABA and derivatives of PABA, are thought to be carcinogenic, cause allergic reactions and disrupt hormone

systems. If in doubt,

look for a natural brand from your local independent health store.

Apply sunscreen to clean, dry skin and make sure you reapply regularly. Try to keep out of the sun when it is at its most powerful, between 11am and 2pm, and keep covered up with clothing or by staying in the shade.

Fake it to make it!There are so many natural self-tanning lotions around that there’s no excuse to risk your health by excessive sunbathing.

Natural self-tan contains a chemical called DHA (dihydroxyacetone) derived from plant sources such as sugar cane and sugar beet. To achieve the best fake tan, always make sure you apply the product to clean, dry, unperfumed skin. Wait for 24 hours after waxing.

Begin with your feet and work upwards, applying the lotion in a circular motion. Don’t go heavy on the application – it’s better to build up the colour gradually than to end up looking like an Oompa Loompa! Apply less of the product to your hands, neck and feet as the skin is thinner in these areas and always make sure you have some wet wipes on hand to clean up any overly tanned bits.

Face facts As hot weather can cause foundation to melt and smear, try using a tinted moisturiser instead – it will feel fresher and lighter on your skin. If you have blemishes that need extra

Acne Myth: Acne is caused by dirt.

Acne Fact: Acne is not caused by dirt. And no amount of scrubbing with soap and water will do anything to help clear it up. In fact, too-frequent washing can have the opposite effect. Why? Because aggressive scrubbing can irritate skin; and stripping away oil can trigger even more oil production – and both these things can make acne worse. Genetics and hormones are the acne triggers in everyone. In adults, stress can have a profound effect on hormones which, in turn, can cause acne to flare up.

Acne Myth: Acne is caused by a diet of sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks.

Acne Fact: Acne is not caused by what you eat – in almost all cases. Because it takes about three weeks for a pimple to emerge, if one shows up the day after you ate a bunch of chocolate, there is no connection!

Acne Myth: Only teenagers get acne.

Acne Fact: What is true is that 90% of teens get acne – but also about 50% of women and 25% of men get acne at some time during adulthood, sometimes for as long as 20 years!

Acne Myth: Acne is no big deal.

Acne Fact: In one respect, acne can be seen as a common skin condition without serious health consequences, but in fact acne is a profoundly serious condition that can have devastating consequences – emotionally, socially and physically.

Voted by testers as Best Acne Product on Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies, ANTIACAcne Clearing Spray from Salcura is a 100% natural alternative to pharmaceutical preparations containing chemicals such as benzoyl peroxide. Its spray action cleans deep down while extensively proven anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredients work to reduce the visible signs of acne. Salcura Antiac (50ml, £9.99) is available from natural health stores across the UK and Ireland.

AcneuncoveredMany people are so desperate to get rid of acne that they follow acne myths blindly. They don’t realise that each person needs a specialised treatment based on their skin type and texture. These myths might seem harmless enough, but some can do serious damage to the skin. Salcura Skincare founder and Biomedical Research Scientist, Dr Martin Schiele, puts the record straight.

Acne Myth: Sun exposure helps clear acne.

Acne Fact: Sun exposure can actually make acne worse. Perhaps the myth started because light tanning may hide some red marks, but the sun causes skin cells to shed even more – and that’s a major acne trigger.

Acne Myth: Acne is curable.

Acne Fact: Acne has no cure – not with the most expensive prescription medication; not with the best over-the-counter system. However, acne can be healed and controlled with daily maintenance therapy.

coverage, try brushing a powder foundation over them. To eliminate the dreaded shiny t-zone keep some blotting papers in your handbag for quick touch-ups.

Strong coloured eye shadows can look overpowering in summer, so go for subtler hues for a more summery look. Powder shadows last longer than creams and will minimise creasing. And make sure you don’t end up looking like Alice Cooper by swapping your usual mascara for a waterproof version. Put away your usual heavy lipstick or gloss and go for a tinted lip balm instead for a touch of shine.

Glow for it! It may be tempting to reach for the bronzer to get an instant tan, but what looks like a healthy glow on one complexion might look positively tangoed on another.

Those with fair skin should try layering a cream blush over a highlighter. Sweep the colour across the cheekbones and underneath the brow bone and blend with your fingers. Mid-toned skin will benefit from a peach-coloured blusher applied to the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and temples using a large brush. Olive and dark complexions can certainly reach for the bronzer as shimmery tones will look great on these skin types. Go for a golden shade and add a bit on your eyelids as well as cheekbones.

Here comes the sun!Feet firstWith the sunny weather most of us will be swapping our boots and shoes for strappy sandals or funky flip flops. But this change of footwear can often result in a common summertime problem – cracked heels – caused by open-backed shoes rubbing around the edge of the heel.

Lorraine Jones, a podiatrist from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, says: “We would recommend alternating your footwear so that you aren’t wearing this style of shoe day in and day out. To prevent cracked heels developing apply moisturising cream twice a day, and use an abrasive stone such as a pumice stone or a non-metal footfile when in the shower or bath to exfoliate the build up of skin that can occur. However, if the problem worsens you may need to seek help from a podiatrist.”

Healthy hairHot weather and humid conditions can play havoc with your hair, resulting in dry, frizzy locks or split ends. Allow hair to absorb its natural oils by shampooing less often or opting for a natural sulfate-free shampoo.

If you have tinted or highlighted hair, try

this tip to brighten your colour: wash hair with half a cup of shampoo mixed with one tablespoon of baking soda, then wash again with your normal shampoo and finish with conditioner.

Be sure to get a regular trim – every four to six weeks is about right – as hot weather can dry out the ends. If you tend to blow dry or straighten your hair every day, try giving it a rest during the summer months and allow hair to dry naturally. Or use a leave-in conditioner designed to protect hair against the heat from a hair dryer.

Jojoba oil is a great natural treatment for frizzy, dry hair – apply to the ends of your locks for added protection against the sun’s rays. Better still, if you know you’re going to be out in the sun, put on a hat or cover your hair with a chic headscarf.

According to statistics, 10 million people in the UK are over the age of 65. Population forecasts predict that there will be 5.5 million more elderly people in 20 years time and this number will almost double to around 19 million by 2050. It seems today’s pensioners are healthier than ever! With this in mind, we take a look at age-related health conditions and how they can be prevented and managed naturally.

Osteoporosis“Nutrition is essential for healthy bones which are needed to prevent and cope with osteoporosis,” says nutritional therapist Emily Whitehead (www.plymouthnutritionaltherapist.com). “Calcium is an essential nutrient for bone health. The body loses calcium every day through sweat, hair, nails and urine. To replenish lost stores, eat calcium-rich foods such as cheese, yoghurt, almonds, brazil nuts, broccoli, dried figs, canned salmon and sardines with bones. Milk also contains high amounts of calcium.

Vitamin D is needed for calcium absorption. Good sources include sunlight for 15-20 minutes, fortified milk, egg yolks and oily fish. Leafy, green vegetables are not only rich in calcium but also vitamin K which helps to regulate cells that remove old bone so that new bone can be deposited in its place. Include plenty of bok choy, kale, Swiss chard, turnip greens, romaine lettuce and spinach. Also, limit your caffeine, as excessive amounts can cause the body to excrete calcium.

Taking excessive amounts of calcium without magnesium may encourage bone loss and soft tissue calcification, so be sure to increase your magnesium intake. Sources include nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables.”

are thought be important for eye health as they are found in high concentration in the eye and are responsible for the yellowish colour of the macula. Foods rich in both include kale, spinach, broccoli, eggs and green beans.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are also important for eye health and are found in high levels within the retina. Eating oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines together with nuts and seeds may help support healthy eyes.”

Eye health “Free radical damage has been linked to many eye diseases,” says Debbie Paddington Dip ION, a nutritional therapist with Higher Nature (www.highernature.co.uk). “These include the three most common eye conditions in the over 50s: macular denegation, cataract and glaucoma.

Antioxidants such as beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc help to protect the eyes from free radical damage and are therefore vital for eye health.

Good sources of antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables, especially carrots, sweet potatoes, blueberries, peppers, cherries and kiwis, so make sure you are getting at least your five a day.

The antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin

Arthritis “Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation within a joint,” says Shona Wilkinson, an independent nutritionist working with PAGB, the regulatory body for over the counter medicines and food supplements (www.pagb.co.uk).

“The two most common forms are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. To help ease the symptoms, try to eat more foods that help decrease inflammation. These include garlic, onions, watercress, nuts, seeds and oily fish. Eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains will not only help with the symptoms of arthritis but also improve health generally.

It is also helpful to avoid refined foods such white breads, pastas and sugars. Eating fewer red meats and more lean meats and oily fish for its omega 3-content will also help reduce the inflammation. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants such as tobacco and alcohol.

Glucosamine, which occurs naturally throughout the body, is thought to play a role in the maintenance of healthy joints, helping to keep them supple and flexible. As we grow older our bodies appear to produce less glucosamine which may be associated with stiffness. Taking a glucosamine supplement may therefore help.”

Diabetes Age is one of the greatest risk factors for diabetes. Nutritional therapist Dr Elisabeth Philipps PhD BSc(Hons) BSC Nut Med mBANT (www.hartwellnutrition.co.uk) offers some tips to naturally prevent its onset and/or manage the condition:

1 Balance your blood sugar levels. Reduce foods high in sugar like desserts, biscuits, cakes, pasta, bread, breakfast cereals and sugary drinks (including alcohol) to stop insulin, the hormone that lowers blood sugar, working overtime. This is a major complication in Type 2 diabetes.

2 Choose foods that are low in refined and starchy sugars, such as brown rice, quinoa, nuts, seeds, vegetables, lean unprocessed meat and fish.

3 Krill oil supplements are a rich source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, crucial for insulin function, and in a form that is better absorbed by the body.

4 Increase fibre, particularly freshly-steamed, green leafy vegetables. Try a breakfast of porridge with stewed apple and cinnamon. Cinnamon contains natural compounds that help insulin and porridge oats are rich in fibre.

5 A daily walk or outdoor activity such as gardening also helps to prevent and manage diabetes.

Heart health “The development of heart disease is influenced by a number of risk factors, some of which can’t be changed,” says Helen Bond, a state registered dietitian working with PAGB. “These include family history, ethnic origin and age. However, there are many risk factors such as high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and excess weight that can be controlled by changes to your diet and lifestyle.

To help keep your heart healthy, lower your risk of heart disease and help prevent current heart disease from worsening, you should follow a healthy and balanced diet low in saturated fat and trans fat, with moderate amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, as well as plenty of antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables. Moderate your alcohol intake (1-2 units per day) and salt and sugar levels. Exercising regularly, quitting smoking and managing stress will also help lower your overall risk.

It is also recommended that you should try to eat two portions of fish a week, one of which should be oil-rich to support your intake of omega-3. However, if you don’t like fish or struggle to incorporate it into your diet, then it would be worthwhile to consider taking a fish oil supplement.”

Cognitive function “Mild cognitive impairment caused by brain shrinkage affects one in six of the over-70s in Britain,” says Aimee Benbow, technical manager at Viridian Nutrition (www.viridian-nutrition.com). “Fortunately, as well as making sensible lifestyle choices, there are certain nutrients which can help you maintain your mental faculties for longer.

Phosphatidyl serine exerts significant benefit for cognitive functioning. It limits the negative effects of stress on the brain and improves cellular communication and neurotransmitter release. Acetyl-L-Carnitine, an amino acid, may be of benefit in treating Alzheimer’s disease and depression in the elderly.

Co-enzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring substance and an essential component of the mitochondria – the energy producing unit within our cells. It is involved in the production of ATP, the energy molecule. Recent research suggests that it is beneficial in neurological disorders as it has been discovered that Parkinson’s disease patients have decreased levels of Co-Q10.

In the brain, L-theanine increases dopamine and serotonin production. It also increases alpha-brain wave

activity, a sign of induced relaxation. Theanine administration causes a relaxed, yet alert,

state of mind without sedation. Lastly, vitamin pills which include vitamins

B12, B6 and folic acid have been shown to reduce the brain

shrinkage linked to memory loss in later life.”

yourexperts superfoods

Found only in nature, ‘superfoods’ contain a remarkable yield of nutrients. Those nutrients are easily absorbed by the body, leading to a wide variety of benefits. It is important to include superfoods in your diet as many of them contain essential vitamins in a complete form that your body understands. That means that you will absorb just what you need to keep your bodily functions working at an optimum level.

Remember, superfoods don’t have to be expensive and hard to obtain. Lots of our day-to-day fresh fruit and veg could be considered to be superfoods!

In my opinion, the main superfoods are green vegetables, broccoli being a good example. To begin with, broccoli is bursting with vitamin C, essential for healthy growth and development. Rich in dietary fibre, it helps to promote good digestion and that is the start of every effective detox regime. Many green vegetables are thought to contain multiple nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties.

Dan Barron is the General Manager of Sun Chlorella UK

Full of green goodness

Chlorella is a fresh water algae, like a tiny green vegetable that grows in water. It has the highest content of chlorophyll of any known plant. Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants, and is known to be an effective deodoriser and cleanser. It also contains high concentrations of plant protein, certain vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, nucleic acids, amino acids and other phytochemicals.

Even in a healthy diet, you might not find enough of this nutrition so we should all consider supplementing with a natural product, like chlorella. Of particular interest is a component found in the nucleus of each chlorella cell called Chlorella Growth Factor or CGF. This is thought to be responsible for the fast reproduction of chlorella cells in nature and is often used on its own to promote healing and anti-ageing.

yourexpertssuperfoods

The Baobab tree, also known as the ‘upside down tree’ because of its unusual appearance, is traditionally grown in East Africa and its fruit – the Baobab – has been used for thousands of years by local villagers as it is packed with nutritional goodness. Baobab contains a health-busting mix of vitamins and minerals which is why it’s being hailed as the superfruit of 2012.

Baobab contains six times more vitamin C than oranges, twice as many antioxidants as goji berries, more iron than red meat, six times more antioxidants than blueberries, twice as much calcium as milk, six times more potassium than bananas and more dietary fibre than other fruits including apples, peaches, apricots and bananas. Available in powder form, it can be added to smoothies, yogurts and cereals, or stirred into a glass of juice or water. Better still you can add it to the mix when you are making cakes or flapjacks.

Other superfoods which should be included in our diets are garlic, Brussels sprouts, salmon, blueberries, green

Superfoods are wholefoods that contain phytonutrients, long chain carbohydrates and omega-3s. In order for a food to be labelled a superfood, it must offer specific health benefits above and beyond its normal nutritional value. Superfoods work in unison with your body’s systems, providing nourishment at a cellular level for optimum health benefits.

In the book Astaxanthin, written by Bob Capelli and G R Cysewski PhD, the superfoods natural astaxanthin and spirulina, both known for their high levels of antioxidants, have been proven to be 14.3 times stronger than vitamin E, 17.9 times stronger than pycnogenol, 20.9 times stronger than synthetic astaxanthin, 53.7 times stronger than beta carotene and 64.9 times stronger than vitamin C!

I class the main superfoods as those that are found naturally, like micro-algaes, which are nutrient rich in omega-3 and 6, vitamin E and iron. Spirulinas are another excellent superfood, in fact Hawaiian Spirulina is the richest plant source of protein available to man, far surpassing soya.

Kirsten Brooks BSc Hons, D N Med, is an independent nutritionist working with Minvita, suppliers of Baobab Superfruit Powder

Alanah Lake-Hoole is Director of MicrOrganics UK, suppliers of Bio-Xanthin, Natural Astaxanthin and Hawaiian Pacifica Spirulina

Introducing nature’s superfruit

Spirulina – the most versatile superfood

tea, oats, Brazil nuts, tomatoes and dark chocolate. Garlic contains sulphur compounds such as allicin which have been associated with a reduction in blood pressure, plus it benefits the cardiovascular system by reducing LDL cholesterol. Garlic also has antimicrobial effects.

Brazil nuts are a good source of selenium, an antioxidant mineral which is often deficient in our diets. It is important for a healthy immune system, has anti-cancer benefits and is needed for the proper function of our thyroid gland.

Blueberries are ranked one of the highest sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants protect our bodies from free radical damage associated with health degeneration. They are a particularly good source of anthocyanidins (the plant pigment which denotes the colour), which has a protective effect on our skin and our cognitive function.

n www.minvita.co.uk

Spirulina is the most versatile of all the superfoods. Many people add a few teaspoons to fruit smoothies, their kids’ juice bottles, bread mixes and, recently, a trial batch of chocolate was created using spirulina. It’s so easy to incorporate into your day-to-day diet and can be enjoyed by all the family. Pets and plants can thrive on spirulina as well.

Turning vegan is an immensely healthy choice,” says Lisa Gawthorne, author of vegan fitness book Gone in 60 Minutes. Plant proteins are lower in fat and cholesterol in comparison to animal proteins and they are often higher in fibre, micronutrients and lower in calories. Vegetables, legumes, pulses and meat alternatives (tofu, seiten, gardein) provide an array of vitamins and minerals. 3 In a separate pan sauté the sliced woodland mushrooms and set aside.

4 Bake the butternut squash until three quarters cooked and then set aside.

5 Keep adding the bouillon/milk mixture to the quinoa, tasting and testing as you go.

6 Add the squash and mushrooms, reserving a little for garnish. Add the other 40g of butter, the grated parmesan and 1 tbsp of truffle oil.

Following a vegan diet or avoiding gluten can be achieved by reducing animal, dairy or gluten gradually, by choosing a meal or a day in the week in which to abstain from these foods,” says Adrian Ling, managing director of Plamil Foods. “Once you’ve realised that you’re not ‘avoiding’ but positively seeking a world of tasty, nutritious foods you like, meal times become something to look forward to. The advantages of following these diets include more energy, less bloating and clearer skin.

For people who are embarking on a new sports and exercise regime I would recommend a good multivitamin and mineral complex as a base to ensure that all nutritional needs are being met, plus an essential fatty acid supplement. I would look at their diets to ensure that they are getting enough protein and, depending on their sport, perhaps suggest complex carbohydrates for sustained energy release. I recommend green lipped muscle extracts both internally and externally applied as a gel to reduce muscle and joint stiffness. Arnica gel is also fantastic for aches and pains.

Energy production I personally recommend co-enzyme Q10 and alpha lipoic acid for energy production. Depending on the sport I might suggest creatine and L-carnitine too. I think magnesium is no longer the underrated mineral it used to be and is vital for muscle contraction and to maintain high oxygen consumption and to reduce tiredness. There is a lot of press at the moment about the benefits of beetroot juice and I have a lot of customers who find it very beneficial in their sports performance.

It is well documented that even slight dehydration can reduce sports performance. I think it is vital that everyone, no matter what their activity levels are, drink at least two litres of water a day. This is significantly increased for those exercising, particularly if in warmer weather.

Natural HealtH Hertford• As a lover of vitality, fitness and all things

natural, Julie Goodwin opened the first Natural Health store in Hertford in 1997. There is now a second shop in Welwyn Garden City. Both shops stock a wide range of natural, healthy and organic foods; natural bodycare products and supplements. All staff are enrolled with the Health Food Institute Training School and the Bioforce Training Scheme.

• Visit the website at www.naturaltherapycentre.co.uk. Alternatively, call the Hertford store on 01992 550101 or the Welwyn Garden City store on 01707 392020.

• Julie is a fan of Your Healthy Living because: “It is great to read and keeps me up to date with products and all the latest news within the natural health world.”

Healthy hydration I absolutely love the benefits of coconut water which is full of electrolytes and can help maintain body hydration. I recommend a lot of electrolyte drinks but, speaking as someone who has done a lot of endurance running, the taste of them can become a little sickly. I am now recommending electrolyte drops which can be added to water, are practically tasteless and don’t add any extra calories, additives or preservatives which give essential trace minerals in an ionic form.

Depending on the sport, I tend to recommend a protein shake with or without added carbohydrates for recovery. We also get some fantastic feedback from people who used montmorency cherry juice and magnesium for sports recovery and reduced muscle soreness.

I think it is important to have a good, balanced diet with a variety of vegetables, fruit, pulses and legumes. I also tend to recommend increasing protein levels. A lot of women are very worried that this will bulk them up but, once they start, they realise they are a lot less hungry and their blood sugar is much more balanced which helps stop sugar cravings. I also recommend cutting down on fast-release carbohydrates, including alcohol, and concentrating on eating moderate amounts of complex carbohydrates, with most being consumed in the morning rather than later in the day. I am a great advocate for eating little and often too.

Healthy hydration One of the benefits of coconut water and coconut water juice drinks is their ability to restore lost body fluids as they are rich in electrolytes, which are important for rehydration. Coconut water also offers an alternative to commercially-made isotonic drinks. And people experiencing dehydration can benefit from coconut water as it replenishes body salts and liquids.

More health benefits n Coconut water helps to restore energy levels as it contains more

than twice the potassium of the average banana and more than most sports drinks.

n It is fat-free, low in carbs, low in sugars, low calorie and can aid with slimming, when taken alongside a balanced diet and exercise programme.

n 100% pure, Chi Coconut Water is free from chemicals and contains no added sugar or preservatives. It is available in 1 litre and 330ml packs.

Rehydrate and revive!

YHL promotion

Coconut water has been used for rehydration and as a health and beauty aid in tropical regions around the world for centuries. It is low in fat and calories, contains no cholesterol and has a natural balance of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium – making it a truly healthy electrolyte drink. What’s more, thanks to special harvesting and processing procedures, Chi Coconut Water is biologically pure, with no need for any added preservatives.

Available from your local nutrition and healthy lifestyle retailer. Visit www.treeoflifeuk.com or call 01782 567100 to find a stockist near you.

Seeds of hope A portion of all Chi Coconut Water pack sales go towards One Seed One Life, a charity that provides help to children in the most dilapidated orphanages throughout Thailand. The lowdown on…

NLPWhat’s it all about? Neuro Linguistic Programming, or NLP for short, is a personal development system based on an understanding of how the mind works – how people use thoughts, feelings, words and actions – and using this understanding to enhance our potential. Life’s everyday challenges can often produce stress, anxiety or anger if we are unable to find the right strategies to deal with them, so this is where NLP can help.

What does it help with? NLP can help with releasing negative emotions such as anger, depression, anxiety, sadness, fear, hurt and guilt. It helps to boost confidence and self belief in all areas of life. It can assist people who feel stuck in their careers or relationships, or those who are looking to change direction in their life. NLP also demonstrates how to focus on what you want and feeling good, rather than on what you don’t want and feeling bad.

Can I do it myself? Yes! NLP techniques such as anchoring, rapport, reframing and modelling are simple to learn. Find a local therapist who can teach you the techniques, or take a look at the many books on the subject, such as Teach Yourself NLP by Steve Bavister and Amanda Vickers (£9.99, Hodder).

Where do I find out more? Visit the website of the Association for NLP which seeks to raise awareness of NLP with the general public and promotes best practice amongst all NLP professionals: www.anlp.org

Jo Blaylock, Pravera General Manager, answers:The problem is that many of us may be using products every day which contain

Susi Lennox, co-founder of The Yes Yes Company, answers: Menopause changes sex for women. The well publicised effects of menopause that most women are familiar with include

the infamous mood swings and hot flushes. Less well known is the onset of vaginal dryness and the painful sex it can cause. Sadly, as the oestrogen runs dry, so can the vagina, and this can come as an unpleasant shock.

Prior to the hormonal changes that herald menopause, most women will be used to producing their own vaginal lubrication as part of the arousal process. But as oestrogen production goes into decline, the ability to self-lubricate also decreases. The walls of the vagina become thinner, making the area itchy and uncomfortable.

Perhaps you and your partner have not previously explored the use of intimate lubricants, or regarded them as a “pleasure accessory” – but now is the time to discover the benefits of using

natural products which will moisturise your intimate tissues, restore comfort and ease penetration. When the fear of pain is removed, stress is reduced, desire can be restored, the pleasure of intimacy can be rediscovered and, in some cases, relationships repaired.

So the use of a safe and effective lubricant can revive your libido and enable you to reclaim a fulfilling sex life together.

n The Yes Yes Company produces a range of water-based and oil-based intimate lubricants and moisturisers. Visit www.yesyesyes.org

can cause irritations leading to sensitivity. Switching to using natural and organic products will eliminate this problem immediately.

Also, a lot of people who think they suffer from sensitive skin actually don’t – they might just be using the wrong products for their skin type. Make sure you are using the right type of products for the type of skin you have.

If you are using the wrong products, this can create skin problems that you don’t necessarily have. If your skin is dry, this is different to dehydrated; similarly if you have combination skin, don’t use a product specifically for oily skin.

Actress and producer Trudie Styler and her husband Sting are well-known for their eco-friendly lifestyle and passion for green living. Here Trudie talks to Your Healthy Living about her love of yoga and shares her tips for staying young and healthy

What initially prompted you to take up yoga?

Trudie: I first got into yoga after having my third baby, Coco. Sting and I had seen a demonstration

by yoga teacher Danny Paradise, and we were converted. He was very strong, supple, graceful and there was a focus and stillness about him that was just so inspiring.

Q How has it helped your health and general wellbeing?

Trudie: Yoga can really be a comprehensive workout. It gives you strength, suppleness, and it elongates the muscles rather than making them tight and compact. It’s good for all the internal organs and if you do an active

12 | your healthy living

form of yoga it can give you a cardio workout too. It’s a much more enjoyable kind of exercise for me because you can’t do it mindlessly, like pounding away at the gym. You have to focus on your body and mind very closely and you have to pay attention. I’m 58 now and feel full of energy, and I really believe practising yoga for over 20 years has played a huge part in maintaining my health and fitness.

Q What are your favourite yoga postures and why?

Trudie: I love Warrior 2 – that’s my ultimate favourite. It’s a powerful standing stretch, elongating you from both sides equally, but the greatest strength actually comes from your core. I often hold it for 16 breaths on each

side, aware of the space at the top of the head opening up, the stretch of the fingers going beyond the fingertips and encompassing a big space. It’s like a form of meditation.

Q What do you do to relax and tackle stress?

Trudie: I practise meditation as part of my yoga routine. My schedule is pretty relentless, I always have lots of different projects on the go at any one time, and I find that regular meditation is a great way to centre myself and feel more in control. It helps me attain a clearer perspective on problems, overcome negative emotions and be more accepting of things that cannot be changed.

Page 45: Your Healthy Living Magazine August 2012

Q What other types of exercise do you enjoy and why?

Trudie: I’ve tried lots of different types of exercise over the years. I was a runner at school, so I was always fairly fit, and I did ballet as a child. Then I did the whole aerobics thing in the 80s, but I had some knee surgery so after that I needed a lower-impact way to stay fit. I love Pilates and ballet-based exercise now because I enjoy doing something that’s graceful and beautiful. I like exercise that requires concentration and body awareness, because that’s much more interesting to do.

Q Do you follow any particular type of diet?

trudiestyler

www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk | 45August 2012

I consider myself very lucky not to have a sweet tooth, because I think sugar is the biggest problem in the diet of the Western world

Trudie Styler’s Strengthen & Restore Yoga, £12.99, is available from 27 August from www.amazon.co.uk

“Trudie: I’m gluten-intolerant so I very rarely have any wheat-based food. And I consider myself very lucky not to have a sweet tooth, because I think sugar is the biggest problem in the diet of the Western world. Other than that, I have lots of fresh, organic vegetables, and lean protein like fish, chicken and guinea fowl. I don’t really have time to cook for myself these days, and there are people who can cook much better than me. I enjoy doing it occasionally, and Sting really likes it when I do!

Q What would you say is the secret to looking young and healthy?

Trudie: I think a healthy diet and regular exercise over many years has done me a lot of favours. I feel like my commitment

to keeping healthy over the last 20 or 30 years is paying me back dividends now, though I don’t want to tempt fate!

Q What projects do you have coming up in the near future?

Trudie: My film company, Maven Pictures, is about to complete our first feature, Imogene, starring Kristen Wiig of Bridesmaids fame and Matt Dillon. And we’ve also just finished filming Irvine Welsh's latest, called Filth, starring the brilliant James McAvoy. My fitness DVDs are still doing well and their associated iPad apps are now coming online, which should make it really easy for people to follow a workout regime wherever they are.

I’m also doing a lot of acting at the moment. Last year I was on stage again for the first time in 25 years in A Dish of Tea with Doctor Johnson, directed by Max Stafford-Clark, and it’s given me the bug again. I’m currently work-shopping two more plays, one with Max again and one with director Sean Mathias.
