The mission of West Side Academy’s alternative education program is to

facilitate academic excellence and equity. We will provide a dynamic and

engaging educational experience that equips our student with the skills

essential to thrive and contribute to a technologically evolving society.

Serving grades 9-12, WSA is one of the district’s models for the Linked-

Learning Information Technology Career Pathway Program. WSA strives for

academic excellence and provides students with opportunities for accelerated

learning through a credit recovery program offering online classes with tutorial

support. WSA serves as a last bastion of hope for students disenfranchised

from traditional comprehensive high schools because of either poor choices

made or circumstances beyond their control. Our ultimate goal is to provide

students with the prerequisite skills necessary to compete successfully in post-

secondary training, as well as in the ever-changing demands of the workplace.

WHAT DO DPS HIGH SCHOOLS HAVE TO OFFER?

Does your teen have a love for science and dream of working in a medical profession?

Detroit Public Schools offers unique programs at two of its high schools that allow students to get a

head start on their careers while preparing them for higher learning.

At Dr. Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine, and at Cody Medicine and Community

Health Academy, students gain exposure to the medical field through opportunities like job shadowing,

internships and field trips. Thanks to support and partnerships with organizations, businesses, hospitals

and colleges in the Detroit area, students are able to gain real-world knowledge.

Plus, both schools use a college preparatory curriculum while giving students the chance to earn

college credits while they are still in high school. To learn more about these schools and what they

can do for your child, visit their websites at BenCarsonHS.com and DetroitK12.org/Schools/codymch.

MEDICAL CAREER

TRACK PROGRAMS

SAFE ROUTES TO & FROM SCHOOL Detroit Public Schools Police Department partners

with community members, schools, volunteers,

neighbors, businesses, nonprofit organizations and

other law enforcement agencies for Safe Routes to

Schools initiatives along key walking and bus routes

each morning and afternoon.

Brothers on Patrol, which provides Eyes and Ears

assistance at Cody and other high schools, has been

doing this for more than 20 years.

AAA of Michigan even donated $28,000 during the

2013-2014 school year to DPS to help expand the district’s volunteer patrol program to keep students

safe when traveling to and from school each day.

STEM

PROGRAMS

THAT EXTEND

BEYOND THE

CLASSROOM

From chess to robotics to

automotive engineering or science

enrichment at the Cranbrook

Institute of Science, the programs

available to DPS students through

the district’s STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics) programs are wide-

ranging. STEM programs present

an opportunity for high school

students to apply classroom

lessons to real-world careers.

As an example, Mazda Motorsports

revved up high schoolers on May

27 with its highly acclaimed national

educational outreach program

presented to more than 700 DPS

students at Martin Luther King, Jr.

Senior High School.

Designed to encourage the nation’s

high school students to consider

studies in science, technology,

engineering and mathematics

(STEM) subject areas, Mazda’s

Racing Accelerates Creative

Education (R.A.C.E.) program

engaged DPS students from 10

different schools just days before

the TUDOR United SportsCar

Championship race held during the

Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix May

30-31 on Belle Isle — yet another

event that hundreds of DPS

students attend each year to make

the connection between STEM

learning and motorsports.

You’ll have to See It to Believe It...

STATE CHAMPS IN

ATHLETIC PROGRAMS Composed of athletic teams

from the district’s high

schools, the Detroit Public

School League continues to

build a legacy of success. The

PSL each year produces many

of the state’s top high school

teams and premier student

athletes, who earn college

scholarships by maintaining

academic focus to strengthen

their preparedness for higher

education.

College recruiters flock to PSL events because of the league’s

well-documented reputation for developing top-notch athletic

talent. The PSL offers a full range of competition in basketball,

football, baseball, track and field, cross country, tennis, swimming,

volleyball and golf for boys and girls. Each year, the Detroit Public

School League hosts its football championship game at Ford Field,

its baseball championship game at Comerica Park, and basketball

and softball championships at the University of Detroit Mercy.

No other league can boast holding its premier events in the city’s

premier sports venues.
