Day 1: (-,-,D)

GUATEMALA CITY - ANTIGUA You are met at Guatemala City Airport and then transferred to Antigua, located 30 miles to the Southwest, on a scenic route that takes approximately 45 minutes. Both Guatemala City and Antigua are located at 5,000 feet above sea level, and at some points the road reaches 7,000 feet above sea level. So, you may notice some shortness of breath if you decide to exert yourself.

ANTIGUAMorning City Tour of Antigua: Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has managed to preserve the ambiance of the Spanish Colonial Empire of the 17th Century.

This former capital was badly damaged in the 1773 earthquake, and the Spanish Crown ordered the Capital moved to a new city, which

is now called Guatemala City. As a result, in 1776, Antigua (at that time called Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala) was ordered abandoned. Not everyone left, but overnight it was transformed from a bustling capital to a provincial town, filled with the ruins of former glory. It became known as "Antigua Guatemala", meaning "Old Guatemala".

Our visit includes the city´s beautiful plazas, convents, churches and historic highlights. In the afternoon, we are transferred to the Pacaya Volcano National Park located 40 miles

to the Southeast. The Pacaya is an active volcano; its summit is at 9,000 feet above sea level. The climb starts at about 6,800 feet and it takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach the peak. The views are incredibly beautiful here.

ANTIGUAToday begins your local immersion, as you s p e n d t i m e m a k i n g a d i f f e r e n c e t o a l o c a l community. In the poorest a r e a s o f h i g h l a n d G u a t e m a l a , i m p r o p e r building materials, a lack of appropriate resources, and unsustainable architecture turn houses to foul rubble in the blink of an eye. Many families live in makeshift homes that are constructed of nothing more than cornstalk or cardboard walls with dirt floors. Decrepit housing quashes

hope, fuels health problems, and destroys family unity.

In contrast, improving living condi t ions beg in wi th f lourishing homes and thriving communities. You have the opportunity to help the poorest of Guatemalan families to build houses making them strong, safe, culturally appropriate, and affordable to maintain. These homes become the

foundation for building a community.

You get to meet and interact with the families that will benefit from your contribution and feel great about the difference you are able to make in their lives.
