OFF-CAMPUS WORK PERMIT PROGRAM

As an international student, you may qualify to work off-campus for up to 20 hours per week if you have a valid study permit and are a full-time student. Work hours can be extended to full-time during scheduled breaks such as winter, spring and summer holidays, and spring break. Working can provide a great opportunity to explore career options and to get involved in the local community.

POST-GRADUATION WORK PERMIT AND PERMANENT RESIDENCY

This program allows students who have graduated from Royal Roads University to gain valuable Canadian work experience. The work permit is valid for the same duration as your study program: up to three years in total. During the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program you may also be eligible to apply for Canadian Permanent Residency.

Student InsuranceAs an international student, you need to have the protection of personal insurance for the duration of your time in Canada. The university-approved insurance is Guard. Student Orientation The International Student Services provides International Student Orientation to help you make friends and settle in to life in Canada. Orientation is made up of fun and informative sessions, including campus tours, introductions to resources, information sessions, lunch with your new classmates and a tour of Victoria.

LEARNING

Academic, personal and practical supportOur staff members are experienced in supporting international students in a range of ways. These include arranging peer mentoring, providing help with study/work permits and connecting you with social and cultural events to enhance your studies.

InternshipsThe Work Integrated Learning Office can support you to find internship and work experience opportunities. Our workshops will help you network, learn skills and techniques to help you secure the position you are looking for. The office staff will help and support you as you secure your selected internship.

LIVING

Health and Counseling Services We offer a confidential, professional service whenever you need help with personal, social, family or academic problems.

TransportRegular bus services operate between central Victoria and RRU, taking about 35 minutes each way. Cycling to campus is simple, too, and we provide showers and lockers to support your commute.

FoodThe Habitat Café is the place to head on campus for hot and cold food served in a comfortable environment. You can find more restaurants less than 1km from campus and a large grocery store.

Sport and recreationStudents have full use of the on-campus Recreation Centre. Student-hosted sports tournaments are actively encouraged on campus, as is taking time to explore the excellent running and hiking trails that lead through our 565 acres campus.

CyclingGetting on your bike is a great way to experience our beautiful surroundings. RRU actively promotes cycling to, from and around campus and provides shower rooms and lockers to support your commute. Route 1: if you need some help to improve your English language or academic results to the standard required for study at RRU, the International Study Centre provides a number of effective ways to prepare for success in your degree.

Route 2: if you meet the minimum entry requirements for direct entry to the university, you can apply to transfer straight into year 3 of any on-campus undergraduate degree programs or direct to any on-campus graduate program.

Our students have a wide range of academic levels and goals. That’s why we have developed two different learning options to support each individual in the most effective way. Simply choose the option that’s best for you:

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)

One or two semesters (3 months or 6 months)This undergraduate pre-degree program is for international students with a minimum English level of IELTS 4.5 or equivalent. The program will help you to develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and confidence ready for the International Year One program. Find out more on page 20.

TRANSFER PREPARATION PROGRAM (TPP)

One or two semesters (2.5 months or 6 months)This program is designed to prepare you to transfer directly into year 3 of an undergraduate degree program at RRU. It will help you to improve your English language and academic skills ready for on-campus degree completion. Find out more on page 20.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR ONE (IY1)

One or two semesters (8 or 10 months)This unique program offers a high level of support, English language study, and for-credit academic courses that prepare you for onward study in the second year at RRU. Find out more on page 22.

This intensive program will prepare you for graduate-level study in Canada. The International Study Centre provides a supportive environment in which to boost your English language and academic capabilities to meet the requirements of the University. ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR DIRECT ENTRY INTO YEAR 3 AT ROYAL ROADS UNIVERSITY?

RRU offers a unique opportunity to transfer from your existing degree to one of our programs. If you have successfully completed two years of undergraduate study at another institution and meet specific entry requirements, you can enrol directly into year 3 of any on-campus undergraduate program.

Progression to Year 3 from International Years 1 and 2Students who successfully complete International Years 1 and 2 can progress to any on-campus undergraduate degree, except for the Bachelor of Science* in Environmental Science and the Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management. To progress, you will need a 75% or grade ‘B’ average with a 3.00/4.33 GPA, and a 6.5 IELTS or 68 TOEFL score.

Internship research project option:After you complete 12 months of regular study, you can take a 3-6 month internship project in Canada, bringing your total course duration to 18 months. This option is only available to students with a minimum 75% average by the end of your second quarter.
