There’s somethingof an eco homerevolution going on

in New Zealand right now,and it’s not before time.

A few years ago, whenthe Homestar rating waslaunched by the NewZealand Green BuildingCouncil, we were shockedto find that the averageKiwi home rated betweentwo and three on the scaleof ten. And, on a purelyanecdotal level, whohasn’t heard an emigrantfrom the UK complainthat the construction andheating systems of ourhomes seem to ignore thefact that we actually get adecent winter?

Rather than justthrowing on a jerseyand getting on with it,these days homeownersare demanding dry, warm and energyefficient homes, builtwith healthy materialswhich have themselveshave been producedin an environmentallyfriendly manner.

Outside, we’re putting inrain gardens, eco-friendlyseptic systems, permeablepaving and native plants.

It all adds up to a housingstock with a muchlighter footprint, andtrue sustainability, whichbodes well for the future.

This home in Coatesville makes thevery most of passive solar heating.

Sun lover

The eco-friendly design and efficiency of thishome sits nicely in its rural setting.

The Coatesville Passive Solar Housein Rodney, North of Auckland, is astunning home situated on a 1.5-acre

property with bush and valley views.

But perhaps more impressive is the way inwhich it functions.

The roof is a series of stacking saw-toothroofs designed to capture every possiblebit of sunlight during winter and naturallyexhaust warm air through a series ofclerestories (high windows) during summer.

The house relies on exposed insulatedconcrete slabs and large insulated verticalprecast concrete walls for optimal passivesolar gain and heating during winter. The roofshapes and windows function as clerestories, allowing a natural stack effect to cool downthe interior and naturally ventilate thebedrooms and living spaces over summer.

“Cross ventilation is the most straightforwardform of natural cooling,” says the home’sdesigner Duncan Firth of Solarei. “Thisentails understanding what direction theseasonal winds will come from and allowingfor the maximisation of this air flow throughthe home, mainly during summer. The ‘stackeffect’ works on the principle that externalcool air is always on the ground level andwill be pulled into a home as warm airheats, rises and exits. This in turn creates acontinuous movement of natural ventilationwith constant cycles of fresh air entering andexiting the house. The motion can be likened

to a set of lungs which breathe for the home, providing fresh air to the occupants.”

Internal temperatures passively peak at 24°during later afternoon mid-winter with theextreme low being 17° during early morning.

Green technologies and features which havebeen incorporated into the house includea tiger worm composting system that treatsblack and grey water, heat pump water heater,54,000 litres of rainwater harvesting capacity,bio-paints for interior finishes, above-codeinsulation for walls and roof, long-lasting,low-maintenance bricks for the exterior, cedar fascia boards at roof and deck edges, energy efficient appliances and water-efficienttapware used in bathrooms and kitchen.

The addition of 4kW of solar panel systemswill render the house energy self-sufficient.

Passive solar gain

Passive solar gain uses theabundant free radiant energy fromthe sun, of which New Zealandhas plenty. Concrete floors andwalls (thermal mass) are likere-chargeable batteries that usesunlight instead of electricity forheating. During the day time sunlightis beamed onto a floor or wall, thisenergy is then absorbed. Whenexternal temperatures cool at night, heat is then released from the slab. This idea is central to the design ofa passive solar house.

The liberal use of polished concrete floorsand slab walls provides natural heat sinks

for the winter sun, which is released asthe evening falls.

Join the revolution inhigh performance, energy efficient homes.
