1. which ones are sentences?2. Which are NOT sentences? How do you know?

Every sentence in English has a subject and a verb.

e.g. He works. They play. subject verb subject verbA sentence may have only a subject

and a verb, but usually, there are other words in the sentence.

e.g. - He works for an employment agency / at the camera shop.

- They play basketball at the club every Saturday.

The Subject The subject is the person or thing the

sentence is 'about'. Often (but not always) it will be the first part of the sentence. The subject will usually be a noun or a noun phrase (a noun and the words, such as adjectives, that modify it) followed by a verb.

- He works for an employment agency / at the camera shop.

- They play basketball at the club every Saturday.

In commands, we do not say or write the subject but the subject of the sentence will be always understood as “YOU”

e.g. Answer the want ads. = “YOU” answer the want ads.

Subjects come before the verb and often come at the beginning of the sentence:

e.g. Saeed told me it was a great job.

subject verb

Subjects can be one word or many words..

e.g. Saeed and Jack told me it was a great job.

subject verbThey told me it was a great job.

subject verb

Subjects cannot be repeated…

We cannot say for example:

Saeed he told me it was a great job.In this case, we will have a subject and a

pronoun referring to the same subject for one verb. This is not correct.

This is different from saying for instance:Saeed and Ahmed told me it was a great job. In this case, we have two different

people/doers performing the same verb. This is OK…

Descriptive AdjectivesExamples of descriptive adjectives [in red]:yellow banana, tall man, wide door, honest

woman, stormy skyDescriptive Adjectives come after verb

“to be”..He is tall.

The banana is yellow.

Descriptive AdjectivesDescriptive Adjectives may come

before the noun they describe..In this case , we use the articles a, an or the…

She is a smart girl. He is an important writer. The new teacher is in class.A , an or the are not used When we do not use nouns after the

adjective..e.g. Ali is smart.

A possessive adjective is usually used to describe a noun, and it comes before it, like other adjectives:

Possessive Adjectives: My, your, his, her, its, our, their…

When we use a possessive adjective, we do not use the articles a, an or the..

e. g. My car is bigger than her car.

Subject pronoun Possessive adjective

I My

You (sing. + plu.)

Your (sing. + plu.)

We Our

They Their

He His

She Her

It Its

I own a laptop. = It is my laptop.

You own this computer. = It is your computer.

My husband owns a car. = It is his car.

My sister owns a lovely wedding dress. =

It is her dress.
