GET INTO NEWCASTLE CONTENTS

ContentsFRESH FROM THE PRESSWelcome to this edition of our refreshed NE1 Get into Newcastle magazine - with a fold! We really hope you like the new layout. Much of the content will be familiar, including all the best activities and events that Newcastle has to offer, and now including other news about what’s going on in everyone’s favourite city! With the seemingly endless Brexit uncertainties and the stark disparity in, for example, levels of transport investment between the North and South of the country, it’s beholden on us all to talk up Newcastle and talk up the city region. We’ll be using the pages of this fortnightly magazine to bring you regular and interesting snippets from various sectors operating in the city, for example the world of business, arts & culture, and medical science, so people can learn a little more about some of the great things that are happening right under our noses. We know there’s a buzz up here - so please tell other people what you learn and help us spread the word. By the same token, if your business is doing something amazing and you’d like people to know then don’t hesitate to get in touch.I very much hope you enjoy the new format.

CELEBRATING NORTHERN PRIDE

Saara Aalto takes to the stage…She’s an X Factor star, Dancing on Ice finalist and even the voice of a Disney princess - and this summer, Saara Aalto will be taking centre stage at the Northern Pride Festival on Saturday 20th July 2019!

ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT HEADING TO THE TOON FOR THE 2019 NORTHERN PRIDE FESTIVAL?I’m very excited to come back to Newcastle. We came for the X Factor Tour and I have heard so much about it from my fellow contestant Sam Lavery. Pride Festivals are the best events of the summer. Obviously it’s quite a personal thing for me, but it’s also such a beautiful event that is all about love and I just love to perform there and have fun.

HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING BACK ON THE BIG STAGE?I had to take six months out for Dancing on Ice so it’s great to be back on stage, it’s like this is what I’m meant to be doing, this is what I love. I’ve been performing in China, Europe and the UK – the best audience is actually in the UK because they are so open and very loud. In Finland, people are much more reserved so I have to work harder on stage. You perform in the UK and people are screaming and it’s a lot easier!

WHAT’S NEXT?When I think about life, I have achieved everything I want to do – it’s crazy! My dreams usually come true, so I have to be careful what I wish for. I have to sit down and think what do I actually want to do next? I want to keep on singing. People always say it’s so different to see me live. I am a live performer, it’s what I love to do!

See Saara Aalto perform live on the Manchester Airport Los Angeles stage at Northern Pride Festival on Saturday 20th July 2019.

WHAT ELSE IS ON IN THE CITY? KYM SIMS 19 JULYKickstart the Pride party weekend celebrations at Hoochie Coochie, where Kym Sims will be taking to the stage for one night only! BOULEVARD SUMMER SHOW 2019 19 & 20 JULYIt’s not summer without a visit to Newcastle’s premier cabaret show, Boulevard! Expect to see a lavish and lively show, packing in plenty of live music, dancing and dazzling costumes. A must-see during Pride weekend in NE1! boulevardnewcastle.co.uk

PROUD STORY TIMES UNTIL 21 JULYThroughout the Northern Pride weekend, our friends at Seven Stories will be hosting LGBTQ+-themed ‘Proud to Be Me’ storytelling sessions, sharing some of their favourite books that make us feel proud to be ourselves. Celebrating individuality and smashing gender stereotypes along the way - these stories are sure to leave you feeling super proud. A fab family-friendly Pride event this summer! sevenstories.org.uk

#WHYIHAVEPRIDE - AN EVENING WITH MATTHEW TODD 23 JULYFollowing the Northern Pride celebrations, Waterstones welcomes Matthew Todd, former editor of Attitude magazine and author of ‘Straight Jacket’, to Newcastle to discuss his latest book, ‘Pride’. Telling the story of the LGBTQ+ equality movement, the book covers key figures and notable moments, events and breakthroughs of the movement, through rare images, documents and personal testimonies. Join the author this July to celebrate the equal rights movements and the LGBTQ+ community! waterstones.com

of Comedy, Miss Rory, as well as Drag Idol 2019 winner, Choriza May. Don’t forget to head over to The Community Village where you’ll find the Curious Arts Stage, Tesco Family and Youth Zone, Health and Wellbeing Zone, Rainbow Village and the EDF Stonewall Remembrance Garden.

Time to dress up in your brightest gear, add a splash of colour and bring the city alive as we celebrate the Northern Pride Festival 2019! The event is free to attend, but party people can upgrade to Platinum Passes and can get involved with additional events such as a Bongo’s Bingo Pride special! northern-pride.com

STORIES OF NEWCASTLE DANCE HALL AND NIGHTCLUB REVEALED BY CURIOSITY CREATIVETake a look back at the city's iconic nightlife scene with photographs and stories collected from generations of Newcastle dancers and party-goers! The Oxford Galleries on New Bridge Street, later known as Tiffany’s, Ritzy’s, Ikon and Liquid Envy, was the place to be when it came to dance competitions and socials. The memories, which date back to the 1950s, are being brought back to life in a new book called Meet Me At The Oxford, produced by North East digital storytelling organisation, Curiosity Creative. curiositycreative.org.uk

In the 80s when the venue was known as Tiffany's, bands including REM, the Cocteau Twins, Foreign Feeling, The Three Johns and Southern Death Cult played there.

In 1983, a local musician called DJ Stesh set up ‘The Sidewalk’ which was one of the very first

breakdance sessions to

take place in the UK.

The rock night on a Monday night was always popular, with up-and-coming bands like Bon Jovi turning up to socialise after supporting Kiss at the City Hall.

Culture BreakBROUGHT TO YOU BY TYNE & WEAR ARCHIVES & MUSEUMS

EGGSCELENT ART Picture Newcastle in 1450, on a day of celebration, and what comes to mind? A huge painting of the antics of the Shipwright’s Guild on Corpus Christi day 1450 hangs high up in the eaves of the Laing Art Gallery. This painting commemorates the largely lost Newcastle Noah’s Ark mystery plays, performed on moving ‘pageant wagons’ every year. The Shipwright’s is the only surviving play of around 25 in total, with each performed by a different town guild. The Shipwright’s play is (of course) about the building of the ark, and was followed in the procession cycle by the Mariners’ Guild play, about the flood.

Exceptional artist Louisa Hodgson was commssioned to paint it in the late 1920s and 30s. Further increasing the difficulty, she chose to paint using tempera, where egg yolk is used to bind the paint.

The painting celebrates art and spectacle, and was so well regarded that it exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition before permanent display in Newcastle. The play was re-enacted in 2014 by Newcastle University, the first time it had been performed in more than 450 years.
