Hannover – a state capital of great charm

There is scarcely any other region that can offer such diverse and

attractive leisure amenities as Hannover: You can stroll through the

Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen with the rebulit Herrenhausen Palace

including a museum (open from early summer 2013) or enjoy the un-

bridled greenery of the Eilenriede city forest; while the Maschsee Lake

How to get there

Hannover Airport – Wonderful journeys start here

Hannover Airport is the one of the leading airports in Northern Germa-

ny with more than 5 million passengers per year. The air traffic hubs

Frankfurt/Main, Munich, London and Amsterdam as well as the cities of

Paris, Zurich, Warsaw and Copenhagen are only a few examples for the

excellent direct connections within Europe. Further highlights are many

connections to leisure travel destination around the Mediterranean Sea

e.g. in Turkey, Italy and Spain as well as several direct connections

within the CIS states. Thanks to its central location Hannover Airport

is the ideal starting point for a journey through Northern Germany. The

airport has a direct connection to the motorways A7 (Hamburg-Kassel)

and A2 (Berlin-Dortmund) as well as good railway relations via Hanno-

ver main station (approx. 17 minutes) to the high speed railway network

of Deutsche Bahn. For more information go to www.hannover-airport.de.

By car:

Hannover lies on a major German motorway intersection. The A2 mo-

torway links Hannover to North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin. The A7

motorway opens up the north-south axis for all people travelling from

the direction of Hamburg or Munich.

Hannover’s city centre is a clean air zone. You can only drive your car

within the inner city ring if your vehicle has a clean air sticker on the

windscreen. Coaches do not need a clean air sticker.

Hannover – all roads lead to Hannover

Whether you come by road, by ICE high-speed train or by air – Hanno-

ver is one of the most important hubs of transportation in Germany and

the whole of Europe - the place where the whole world meets.

Hannover’s outstanding transportation infrastructure makes it both a

popular destination in itself, and also a starting point for many attrac-

tive excursions into the surrounding region: to the Lüneburg Heath,

for example, or the historic towns and cities of Lower Saxony such as

Hildesheim, Hamelin or Celle.

Thanks to Hannover’s central location, the great metropolises of Berlin

and Hamburg can also be reached in a very short time.

By rail:

Hannover is the most important railway hub in Germany: You reach

Hannover with fast InterCityExpress train connections from Hamburg in

just over an hour, the journey from Berlin to Hannover takes about 1.5

hours. From the Ruhr area, you are in Hannover within 2.5 hours. Even

from Munich you reach Hanover in just 4.5 hours. In addition, many

international long distance lines run via Hannover, so the city is also

easy to reach from abroad. Hannover is also within easy reach from

all destinations in Lower Saxony in a short time by public metropolitan

and suburban commuter railway trains. The Hannover Region is fully

developed by new light rail traffic lines which run far beyond the city

limits.

A Mecca for art lovers

Distinguished and diverse, Hannover’s landscape of museums and

art galleries enjoys an outstanding reputation. The Sprengel Museum

Hannover is among the most important addresses in the world for the

art of the 20th and the 21st centuries; the kestnergesellschaft, the

Kunstverein (Arts Association) and the Ahlers Pro Arte/Kestner Pro Arte

Foundation are further institutions for contemporary art with reputa-

tions extending well beyond the region.

Visitors to the Hannover State Museum (Landesmuseum) will find De-

partments of Prehistory, Natural History and Ethnology, the State Art

Gallery and an aquarium. The Museum August Kestner presents the

ancient world and ancient Egypt, while the history of the state and the

city is recounted in the Museum of History. The Wilhelm Busch – Ger-

man Museum of Caricature and Drawings houses caricature, satirical

art and a unique Wilhelm-Busch collection. For detailed information on

projects to be seen in Hannover.

Shopping paradise

Did you know that Hannover’s Georgstrasse and the adjacent Bahn-

hofstrasse are among Germany’s most popular shopping streets? But

they are not all that Hannover has to offer: the diversity of the Niki de

Saint Phalle Promenade, the elegant boutiques of the Ernst-August-

Galerie or the Galerie Luise and the charming Old Town quarter offer

everything it takes to turn a mere shopping expedition into an experi-

ence of infinite variety.

Kissed by the muse

The city’s programme of cultural events is more diverse and more

exciting than ever, offering a comprehensive spectrum of everything

from light entertainment to stage productions of the highest calibre.

The State Opera and the State Theatre both occupy leading positions

in international rankings, and celebrated conductors and orchestras of

international renown can always rely on enthusiastic receptions from

their devotees in Hannover.

For many years now, the GOP Variety-Theatre has offered entertain-

ment of the highest calibre. Top international artists meld acrobatic

performances on the highest level, baffling conjuring and offbeat com-

edy into a modern show experience that is constantly new.

Festival time!

Hannover draws visitors with a big programme of attractive events

throughout the year. The highlights include the open air performances

in the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen: the International Firework Com-

petition, concerts and open air musicals attracts tens of thousands

of visitors. People come from all corners of the globe to join in the

world’s biggest Schützenfest (Marksmen’s Funfair) and the Maschsee

Lake Festival. And as the year comes to a close, the colourful stalls

of the festive Christmas Market create an atmosphere of seasonal

warmth and joy within the picturesque surroundings of the historic

Going out in 17th century fashion – the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen

Baroque opulence and elegant fountains in the Great Garden, romantic

English landscape gardens in the Georgengarten, and botanical treasu-

res in the Berggarten with its glasshouses and orchid collections: the

former summer residence of the Royal House of Hannover still brings

alive the grandeur of aristocratic life throughout the year. The start of

the 2013 summer season heralds the opening of the new Herrenhausen

Palace Museum: “Palaces and gardens in Herrenhausen – from barock

to the modern day” is the name of the big show that invites visitors to

entertainingly explore the many facets of the wide-ranging palace and

garden world in Herrenhausen.

The city view

In the magnificent New Town Hall, surrounded by the idyllic Masch-

park, four models of the city show the diverse history of Hannover. Tra-

velling up to the 97-metre-high Town Hall dome in the unique curving

lift is an experience in itself: from the top, you can see as far as the

Deister Hills. And every visitor who is not already convinced of the fact

can clearly see from here that Hannover is Germany’s greenest city!

Around Maschsee Lake

A maritime paradise right in the city centre! The Maschsee Lake offers

the people of Hannover a recreational area in the heart of the city, both

on the water and all around it: for yachting, canoeing and pedal-boating,

for joggers, skaters and strollers. On the banks of the lake you will find

the celebrated Sprengel Museum Hannover.

In the heart of the Old Town

Here you can breathe the city‘s history: the historic timber-framed

buildings of the Old Town are among the very special sights of the city

centre. Stroll through picturesque narrow streets and discover exclu-

sive boutiques and inviting cafés and restaurants.

A few yards further on you can relax in secluded spots on the banks

of the River Leine. On Saturdays, Germany’s oldest flea market takes

place here – an Eldorado for lovers of art and curiosities, set against

a historic backdrop.

Horse riding in the northeast

Pony trekking, coach rides, romantically situated manor houses, and

unspoilt countryside on all sides: the north-eastern part of the Han-

nover Region has ideal conditions for riders and horses thanks to its

extensive sandy soils. Rides take you through nature protection areas,

past halftimbered farmhouses, across a varied landscape, and along-

side rivers and lakes. Depending on the time of year, riders can enjoy

the sight of heather in full bloom, fields of asparagus, peat bogs, fo-

rests and rare birds.

Sail away – Lake Steinhude

Lake Steinhude (Steinhuder Meer) is a big lake in the north-west of the

Hannover Region. It is a paradise for water sports and a very popular

outdoor recreation area offering swimming, sailing, surfing and kite-

surfing. Covering 32 square kilometres, this is the largest lake in nor-

thwest Germany and also has a great deal to offer people interested

in less active sports, or families with small children who can venture

onto the lake in the many rowing boats, pedalos and electric boats for

hire. The many facets of the “Steinhuder Meer Natural Park“ can also

be explored by cyclists and walkers. In addition to the large expanse of

water, the surrounding countryside is an extremely attractive mosaic of

dunes, peat bogs, meadows and woods. Many attractive holiday homes

provide the perfect place to stay for a holiday in harmony with nature.

Cycle tours through the Deister Hills

Cycling in the countryside is in fashion. One of the most popular cy-

cling destinations in the area is the Deister, whose wooded ridges

and surrounding farmland boast a network of cycle paths attracting

professional and amateur cyclists alike.

Attractive buildings and parks along the way add to the pleasure: man-

or houses, churches and half-timbered buildings take you back to the

Middle Ages. And impressive gardens, idyllic picnic places and country

inns invite you to stop and rest a while.

Marienburg Castle takes you into the world of the Guelphs

Marienburg Castle lies around 20 km south of Hannover at the eastern

end of a series of wooded ridges extending from the Deister. The for-

mer summer residence of the Guelphs – originally a present from King

George V of Hannover to his wife, Queen Mary – is still owned by the

family today. Fully furnished, its many loving details can be enjoyed

during a professional guided tour.

23rd International Firework Competition

This event is a “high light“ in the truest sense of the expression – the

place where the best pyrotechnists from all over the world compete

against each other! The combination of music, drama and fireworks

simply gets under your skin. One frisson of pleasure follows another,

and you find yourself wishing that the 25-minute performance would

never end. It is hardly possible to imagine a more marvellous backdrop

than Hannover‘s Herrenhausen Gardens for these breathtaking displays

Marksmen‘s Funfair

For ten days, the Schützenplatz covering more than ten hectares at

the edge of Hannover’s city centre is turned into a gigantic fun fair:

The rustic hustle and bustle and the uninhibited high spirits dominate

the festival into the early hours. The traditional marksmen and the

millions of visitors have been cultivating their ancient ceremonies for

almost 500 years. The highlight of the festival is the Grand Parade

of the Marksmen which has literally got the people of Hannover out

onto the streets since the beginning of the 17th century. The parade

starts every year at 10 o’clock in the morning when the order “Quick

March!“ gets the procession with around 12.000 members of the

marksmen’s clubs, traditional costume and carnival societies on the

move. Accompanied by over 100 national and international bands, the

colourful parade proceeds along the four kilometre long route through

the city centre and the historic Old Town. It takes around three hours

until the tail end of the procession passes the up to 200.000 jubilant

spectators.In top hat and tails, the four Bruchmeister – the Schützen-

fest stewards who also boast a very long tradition – demonstrate their

social responsibility.

Concerts, variety acts, and culinary specialities: for over 25 years now,

the Maschseefest has transformed the large lake in the town cen-

tre into a thrilling waterside festival. With around two million visitors,

the Maschseefest is now one of the largest Open-Air-Parties in north

Germany. The 19 day long programme all along the water front has

something for everyone of all ages and tastes: a wide range of food

of all kinds, free concerts, sporting action on the lake, and dance eve-

nings under the stars – creating that wonderful holiday feeling in the

middle of the state capital of Niedersachsen. The show is rounded off

by an exciting programme of variety and comedy acts. There is also a

great deal on offer for small children: from the bouncy castle to face

painting, the kid’s meadow boasts a wide range of attractions.

The star of the festival is the Maschsee itself: visitors love to discover

its many different facets such as a cruise on the pleasure steamers,

relaxing cocktail soirées with a view across the lake, or just strolling

along the palm-fringed lakeside promenade. The Mediterranean flair

all around the Maschsee makes chilling out easy – and makes it dif-

ficult to believe that this mega al fresco party is taking place in north

Germany!

This miracle of baroque gardening style owes its existence to a most

unusual woman: Electress Sophia of Palatinate. Inspired by the sun

king Louis XIV, she ordered the landscaping of this approx. 180 acre

garden in the French style at the end of the 17th century. It became

her life‘s work.

The participants get to know exciting stories on Hannoverian history

in the Old Town first. The next station is the New Town Hall where the

highlight of the tour takes place: thrill is guaranteed while going up to

the top of the New Town Hall dome with the modern curving lift. The

children have the chance to take a look into the elevator shaft through

the transparent cabin floor. From the top of the dome they have a

fantastic view over the city.

The New Town Hall

The New Town Hall was built at the beginning of the 20th century in

the opulent style of the Wilhelmenian époque. The dome with its gol-

den top rises an impressive 97.73 metres above the park. A curving

lift (you have to travel in it to believe it!) whisks you up at a crazy angle

to the lofty viewing platform from where you have a splendid view over

the whole of Hannover. Four large models of the city in the main hall

show how the face of Hannover has changed over the centuries: 1689,

1939, ruins in 1945, and today.

Starting in 2013: The new Herrenhausen Palace

Discover the art of gardening in all its perfection, and headline history

at one fascinating location: the new Herrenhausen Palace Museum – an

amenity of the state capital Hannover, sponsored by the state of Nie-

dersachsen – opens at the start of the 2013 summer season: “Palaces

and gardens in Herrenhausen – from barock to the modern day” is the

name of the big exhibition that invites visitors to entertainingly explore

the many facets of the wide-ranging palace and garden world in Her-

renhausen.

Herrenhausen is undoubtedly one of those very special places where

exceptional things happen: the universal scholar and polymath Gottfried

Wilhelm Leibniz (1646 – 1716) developed many of his world-changing

ideas here in dialogue with Kurfürstin Sophie (1630 – 1714) and her

daughter Sophie Charlotte (1670 – 1701). The spectrum of concepts

developed by the European-wide well connected universal scholar ran-

ged from the state of the art of his own day and age, to highly advanced

ideas that were well ahead of their time.

The state capital Hannover and the Volkswagen Foundation decided in

2009 that the time had come to rebuild the summer palace of the Guel-

ph royal family which was destroyed during the second world war. With

the resurrection of the Herrenhausen Palace – which will be used as a

scientific congress centre and museum – the Royal Gardens of Herren-

hausen become reunited with their architectural centrepiece.

The Herrenhausen Palace Museum opens at the start of the 2013 sum-

mer season.

Opening times

The Great Garden and the Berggarten botanical gardens open throug-

hout the year at 09.00. They close at different times depending on the

season. The museum opens daily in the summer season from 11.00 to

18.00. In the winter season (1 November to 31 March) the museum is

open from Thursday to Sunday from 11.00 to 16.00.

The Grotto in the Great Garden of the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen

was built in 1676. Its walls were originally decorated with sea shells,

crystals, glass and minerals, and were a cool place to withdraw to during

the summer’s heat. Since their restoration and redesign by Niki de Saint

Phalle for the World Exposition EXPO 2000, the Grotto has been brought

back to life again to enchant visitors with its colourful, sparkling interior.
