LEGISLATURE IN THE NEWS

2019 Legislative Session: A Mixed Bagby IL State Senator Craig Wilcox

The outcome of the 2019 legislative session was a mixed-bag of results for Illinois businesses.

Senate Bill 1, signed into law Feb. 19 mandates a six-year phased-in $15/hr. minimum wage for adults and $13/hr. minimum wage for those under 19 years of age. Surrounding states will have minimum wage rates well below Illinois

as our rate begins to climb. This will make our businesses, especially along border state areas, far less competitive. That could result in job losses here. These concerns were raised by local chambers, farmers and small and large businesses alike, but they were not addressed in the bill. I will continue to advocate for less burdensome government as the legislative session continues.

House Bill 1438 legalized “recreational” marijuana, allowing adults to possess up to 30 grams of marijuana. Possession above that limit remains a class 4 felony. Fortunately, workplace protections are part of the law, including allowing employers to create reasonable employee zero tolerance and drug testing requirements. Employers can also prohibit the use of marijuana at work. Discipline and termination is allowed for violating those policies and the law provides liability protection if the employer terminates an employee.

The largest-ever state budget totaling $40 billion - was approved, and while spending and a number of taxes

increased, the deal included some positives for businesses. The so-called Death Tax or Estate Tax will sunset on Jan. 1, 2021; four new tax credits were created to spur construction projects; the Manufacturing Machinery and Equipment (MM&E) Exemption on production-related tangible personal property was extended and; the Corporate Franchise Tax will be phased out over four years beginning in 2020.

Other notable issues include;Senate Bill 75, which is currently under review by the Governor, requires all employers in the state to provide sexual harassment prevention training for their employees. Hotels and casinos are required to provide employees with safety or notification devices. Additionally, state officials, employees and lobbyists are required to take sexual harassment and unlawful discrimination prevention training annually. There are also protections for victims of discrimination or harassment under the Complainant’s Bill of Rights included in the bill.

House Bill 834 prohibits employers from asking a prospective employee about their wage history or other compensation. It is also under review by the Governor.

Also noteworthy were House Bill 3271 and Senate Bill 1648. These proposals would have allowed small businesses to make quarterly unemployment insurance payments, instead of a full payment in the first quarter of the year. Unfortunately, neither measure received a hearing this spring.

Legislators return to Springfield for the fall Veto Session in October. The 2019 session was my first full session as your State Senator. It’s an honor to represent your views in Springfield.

Nowadays the term branding has become somewhat of a buzzword. The use is casually thrown about to describe colors, logos, and general imagery. But what if branding means something more? What if that more could bring you more business? Today I want to explore what branding is, why it’s important, and how you can leverage branding to make your business grow.

What branding is and why it’s importantAs previously stated, when I use the term branding you probably think of logos immediately. The concept of branding is so much more though. Branding, in its truest sense, is a product. More specifically, it is an experience. To understand this fully, we need to take one step back and look at marketing. Marketing is the ongoing effort of promoting a product. However, marketing does not account for the public’s perception of your product or services. This is what we call the “brand experience”.

The brand experience is the user perception of the experience associated with your business, product, or service. From the initial contact with your brand to the close of sale, every step of that journey is part of the brand experience. Think of a company that you particularly love. Is it just the product that you love, or is it the entire experience, including support or aesthetics? All of those feelings and events you connect with that item or service are what make up the brand experience, giving the brand its power.

CRAFTING AN EXPERIENCEThe Art of Creating a Brand Perspectiveby Jake Tlapek - Director of Marketing, Dorian Solutions

BUSINESS PATHWAYS • AUGUST 2019 7

Once you have a favorable brand experience, then you can leverage that perception onto your products or services. This is how your brand cooperates with marketing. By spreading your favorable brand with potential customers, they don’t need to know the product’s quality prior to purchase. They simply apply their brand experience to your product. Be careful! Your products are inherently part of your brand experience, and a poor experience can negatively impact your overall brand perception.

Crafting Your Brand Experience and Leveraging Brand PerceptionNow that we know why you should build your brand and how it impacts our business, we can take a few steps to improve and utilize our brand for maximum return on investment. In all efforts, our primary goal is to maintain or improve consumer perspective of our brand experience.

1. Unify your brand experience: By creating a unified brand experience (matching up your colors, logos, imagery, fonts, etc.), your branding becomes much more powerful and requires less of it. One of the best examples of this is Coca-Cola. Just by applying their particular shade of red to an advertisement, you become instantly aware of their involvement (Google “Coca-Cola & American Idol” for more analysis).

2. Design a “Unique Sales Journey” for your potential customers: By crafting a one-of-a-kind sales journey for each of your unique potential clients, you can connect with your audience as a content expert first and corporation second. Be sure to speak to your prospect in words and terminology that they will understand.

3. Customer retention is marketing: On average, users will tell 15 people about their negative experiences with businesses. By focusing on maintaining a positive brand experience through

the customer service lifecycle, you can avoid disaster. Remember that it is brand perception that drives new and continued business, so you need to focus on customer support.

4. Know your target audience: You cannot get everyone to be your customer. Instead, focus on putting your efforts into approaching viable candidates through search engine optimization (SEO), paid ad targeting, event sponsorships, direct mailing, and social platforms. This way, you can spend less time creating broad messaging campaigns and build interesting brand experiences for your ideal customers.

5. Be approachable: You probably aren’t the only business that does what you do. By sharing valuable content on your website, being involved in community conversations, and being available to answer questions; you become a friendly, reliable company before they ever spend one dollar. You sold them on your “Brand Experience”, setting you apart from your competition, and that is the powerful.

Ask Yourself, “Does this positivelyimpactmybrandexperience?”Your business has tons of moving parts. It would be so much easier if you could just slap your logo on a box and sell millions of products. But good branding takes more effort than that. Buyers now have more information than they ever did before. By realizing that you need to sell your potential customers on the idea of buying your product, you can begin to build that unique, desirable brand perspective. Once your brand experience is the core of how you operate, you will realize that everything, from operations to marketing, falls easily into place.

United Way of Greater McHenry CountyAnnual Campaign Celebration

It’s not often that you can get a little bit of Hollywood in McHenry County. However, United Way of Greater McHenry County did just that at their annual campaign celebration on June 4th at Starline Factory in Harvard. With almost 200 supporters, donors and friends gathered, attendees were part of the live studio audience of the Tonight Show Starring United Way and were entertained with a late night, variety-style awards show.

Executive Director Carole Peters revealed that this year, due to the generosity of the residents and donors of McHenry County, United Way will be allocating $1.1 million dollars to our 29 local partner agencies, an increase of over $99,000 more than last year. The re-investment of these dollars back into our community is impressive and we are so grateful – definitely a reason to celebrate!

Along with revealing the amount raised, truly one of the highlights of every annual dinner is handing out awards to our community leaders and givers. Every June we recognize those who are passionate about United Way, this community and who are helping to elevate what we do. Congratulations and thank you to the following Crystal Lake Chamber members:

The Milestone Award – awarded to companies who raised over $50,000:

• Baxter & Woodman (Crystal Lake) $51,455• ComEd (McHenry County) $73,381

The Breakthrough Award – awarded to companies who had a successful first year campaign or who had a high increase in participation and dollars from the previous year.

• Stryker (Cary) $20,700• Northwestern Medicine (McHenry County) for raising

$25,000

The Servant Heart Award – awarded to Marilyn Zopp, longstanding volunteer for our partner agency Senior Care Volunteer Network for connecting seniors to the services they need, volunteering with compassion and touching the lives of hundreds in McHenry County.

The Social Buzz Award – awarded to FASTSIGNS of Crystal Lake for using social media to engage the community and increase awareness of United Way and our partnership.

The Community First Award – awarded to the team at Mercyhealth McHenry County for creating a culture of giving within and always putting McHenry County at the forefront through Day of Caring Projects, running an active campaign and being present and willing to help other United Way partner agencies.

Special thanks to our 2019 Annual Campaign Sponsors that are Crystal Lake Chamber members:

I have spent a lot of time branding our logo so that it would become unanimous with both our mission and our name “Enlightened Balance”. When you stand behind what you are doing or selling your logo and branding should be as important to you as your name. We receive compliments from both clients and other stores when they notice our iconic logo on bags, stickers, advertising and so on. It makes clients remember you, when they might forget your name they will remember a visual imprint connected with your logo/branding. Hopefully you have done what it takes for that visual connection to be a positive one!

It’s important to give our customer the experience they expect. Our brand is not simply what we say it is. It’s how our customers perceive and experience us. Therefore, our brand lives in everyday interactions with our customers. And to us, it’s of the utmost important to say what we do, and do what we say. Supporting The Salvation ArmyBack to School Program

Every year, parents facing financial difficulties look to The Salvation Army for help in providing proper school supplies for their children before the start of a new school year. Many children go to school with inadequate tools to be successful such as pens, pencils, paper or a backpack to carry on their first day of school. The Salvation Army of McHenry County, along with community support, is working to change this reality through the Back to School Program.

Through our partnerships in 2018, The Salvation Army provided over 1000 children with backpacks stuffed full of needed school supplies. We are looking for businesses to be a school supply donation drop-off site this summer. There is very little to do. We will drop off the donation bin along with flyers and card handouts. When the bin is ready to be picked up, we will come by and collect the materials and donations. It is that easy.

If you can help, please contact The Salvation Army of McHenry County at (815) 455-2769 or e-mail [email protected].
