The KickStart Programme has a history in providing a structured transition from full time education into employment, apprenticeships and further or higher education within the field of hospitality, leisure and tourism.

This year’s programme has allowed businesses an opportunity to see, first hand, the talent that is out there as well as providing a platform for students to gain real insight into the wealth of opportunities on offer.

For those leaving education or unsure of their next step, this voluntary three week programme over the summer months provides an excellent transition into the world of work through:

This year through our partnership with the PM Trust, we are also recognising young professionals through two very special awards. The first ‘The Rising Star Award’ seeks to recognise students who have gone the extra mile within this year’s KickStart programme. The second is the PM Trust and Springboard’s KickStart - ‘Star of the Future Award’ which recognises a student that came through the programme over the past few years and has since been striving to continue to excel in the hospitality industry.

LONDONLondon saw 55 candidates start the programme, of which 53 of those candidates successfully completed the three week programme, which includes one week pre-employment training and a two week work experience. 95% of those who completed went on to full or part time work or further education in the hospitality industry.

Edily completed Kick Start July 2016. She passed all of the qualifications, and was picked out at the recruitment day as a potential star. She was interviewed by The Dorchester who were very impressed by her knowledge, passion and dedication to the industry and subsequently Edily was offered a placement at The Dorchester in the Food and Beverage Department. After successfully completing the placement, she was offered a full time job as Food and Beverage assistant at The Dorchester and is hoping to progress within the industry.

I still am attending Jewish Free School in Kenton, studying Business A-Level and BTEC Hospitality and Catering. Springboard has definitely changed my life, as without them I wouldn’t have been able to get work experience with The Goring Hotel, which is where I did my work experience placement on the Kick Start programme. I learnt how to talk to people politely and I also learnt basic etiquette. Furthermore, the hotel gave me the opportunity to work there after finishing my A-Levels. In the next 5 years I see myself developing and working myself up through the different job roles in a hotel, striving for a

I would also say that they should make their decision from what they think and not give into peer pressure and not join if other people decide not to sign up.

Rosaline completed Kick Start in August 2016. She stood out at the recruitment day with her focus and dedication to become a chef. She passed all of her qualifications on the training week and was offered a placement in the Conrad St James Hotel Kitchens, where Executive Head Chef Michael Riordan took her under his wings. Whilst it took a few days for Rosaline to settle into the rhythm and pace of a 5* Hotel kitchen, by week 2 she had taken on board all of the feedback and advice given and was flourishing. She is now on an Apprenticeship with Conrad St James whilst studying at Westminster Kingsway College. “We are very proud

to be working with Springboard on such an exciting initiative, where we can provide unique opportunities to give youth a chance. We are looking forward to following the career progress of Edily Rodriguez in the months ahead.”

‘My Placement has been interesting so far and my mentor has been amazing and I’ve really been learning a lot.’

‘I have gained experience in the hospitality industry which has helped me see life in a different perspective. I see myself working as a manager in a hotel or as a supervisor.’

We had a fantastic time in this hotel. It is only 5 minutes’ walk from Tower Bridge and has a co-op opposite for anything you may forget. We had breakfast every morning and Yemi (in the restaurant) was fantastic, she was always so jolly and friendly she made my daughters week by calling her princess and talking to her daily. We always went out from breakfast with a smile on our faces.
