leaders who, in 1947, dreamed of
building a hospital to serve the
residents of southern Palm Beach

our services across Palm Beach
County. Together, with Baptist Health,
we are taking the next step to
continue on our path of growth,
expanding access to quality health-
care services in our community and
across South Florida.
Similar to Bethesda, Baptist Health

An international symbol of welcome and hospi-tality, the pineapple now also represents a
new era of healthcare in Palm Beach County. As of October 1, 2017, Bethesda Health has merged with Baptist Health South Florida, the
largest healthcare organization in the region.
“It gives me great pleasure to announce that Bethesda Health, Bethesda Hospital East and Bethesda Hospital West have now officially joined Baptist Health South Florida,” commented Roger L. Kirk, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of Bethesda Health. “We have embarked on this new course in our hospital’s history to strengthen the level of service we provide to our patients and community.”
“Baptist Health and Bethesda Health share similar values. Together, we will develop and share best
practices that will only enhance our commitment to our patients, employees and the communities we serve,” said Brian E. Keeley, president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health South Florida. “As the health-care industry changes, it is essential for progressive healthcare organizations to adjust their operations to remain accountable and strong.”
Bethesda Health and Baptist Health have longstand-ing reputations for being comprehensive healthcare organizations that provide high-quality, compassionate care to their respective communities. Now, they have

come together to expand the role of not-for-profit healthcare services in South Florida.
“As we have since 1959, Bethesda Health remains steadfast in our mission to provide quality health ser-vices in a caring manner,” explained Kirk. “Bethesda Hospital East and Bethesda Hospital West, together with our physician practices and outpatient facilities, will continue to provide the superior level of care that our patients know and trust.”
Through a shared vision of increasing access to care, the affiliation between Bethesda and Baptist Health aims to better serve the needs of the commu-nity. One example of how the partnership will benefit the residents of Palm Beach County is through the growth of outpatient services. Headquartered in Coral Gables, Baptist Health has more than 50 outpatient locations throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties.
Outpatient services, such as diagnostic imaging, urgent care, women’s health services, outpatient sur-gery centers and physician offices, can better serve the community by increasing opportunities for access to care. In addi-tion, new telemedicine programs, such as Care on Demand (see page 6), use the power of modern communication technol-ogy to bring physicians into homes.
The affiliation also strengthens Bethes-da’s Medical Staff of 675 physicians, including the Bethesda Health Physician

Group, the new Bethesda Health Quality Alliance network and Bethesda’s Center for Medical Education. Now connected with more than 2,400 physicians affili-ated with Baptist Health facilities, there is an enormous opportunity for the exchange of knowledge, experience and clinical expertise. This affiliation opens the door for the collaboration of medical resources to provide the highest quality of care for patients from the Florida Keys through Palm Beach County, and provides patients with access to Baptist Health ’s Centers of Excellence, including Miami Cancer Institute and Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute.
“This merger is about growth,” Kirk continued. “Bethesda Health, in our commitment to serve our community, has chosen a strong partner in Baptist Health. We are already hard at work to bring the ‘power of the pineapple’ to Palm Beach County.”
Bethesda Health welcomes Baptist Health and proudly displays our new pineapple logo. Its symbolism is recognizable, strong and the perfect way to represent this new era for Bethesda Health and the future of healthcare in Palm Beach County.

Bethesda Health proudly introduces a new way to access healthcare—from home, work or on the go! With an emphasis on conve-nience, Care on Demand provides access to
a Board Certified, Florida-licensed physician 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from any PC, tablet or mobile device.
Care on Demand is ideal for non-emergencies and minor conditions, such as cough, sore throat, allergies, eye infections, rashes and more. Patients see the doctor through a secure, real-time video and audio connection so they can easily communicate with the doctor to discuss symptoms and treatment. Pre-scriptions are sent electronically, directly to a local pharmacy. If necessary, the online physician may refer a patient to a Bethesda physician or healthcare facility for follow-up care.
There is no appointment necessary, and each visit is just $59. It is especially convenient for those not feeling up to navigating traffic or for someone who is not already established with a primary care physician. For college students in the state of Florida, it means a doctor is just a click away—giving peace of mind to moms and dads.
Enrolling in Care on Demand is easy and hassle-free. Just download the Care on Demand app (App Store/Google Play) and complete the profile and health history. Patients then select a doctor and can be seen within minutes. All information provided when enrolling is secure, including credit card numbers and personal health details. The doctor visit is private and protected, following HIPAA guidelines for patient safety and confidentiality.
Now, just a click away, patients have more options than ever before when it comes to accessing healthcare. Baptist Health and Bethesda Health are coordinating efforts to provide a wide range of services to best meet the needs of a growing and diverse community: primary care physicians, Care on Demand, urgent care and emergency care. Bethesda Health is here for your family—for all of your healthcare needs.

Touching the lives of 1 in 8, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. This year, during National Breast Cancer Awareness month, breast surgical oncologist
Arthy Yoga, M.D., wants women to be more than just aware; she wants them to be empowered.
“By understanding her individual risk, a woman and her doctor can make decisions to lower her risk of developing breast cancer,” explains Dr. Yoga.
Many risk factors for breast cancer cannot be changed, such as gender, age, ethnicity, density of breast tissue, personal history, family history and genetic muta-tions. The good news is that there are other factors and lifestyle choices that can be controlled:
` Maintain a healthy weight ` Be physically active ` Limit alcohol use ` Use birth control options that don’t use hormones ` Avoid using hormone therapy to deal with the symptoms of menopause
Dr. Yoga adds, “When it comes to breast cancer prevention, I advise women to follow these lifestyle guidelines, and have your annual screening mammogram and clinical breast exam. And if you are concerned about any changes in your breasts, don’t delay—get checked by a healthcare professional.”
Dr. Yoga also recommends that women who have undergone a breast biopsy should be regularly followed by a breast health specialist such as a surgeon or nurse practitio-ner trained in breast care.
“Even if the result was benign and showed no cancer, the need for a biopsy indicates that something is changing in the breast and it should be monitored,” Dr. Yoga says. “I also encourage women to talk to family members about their family history of breast cancer in both men and women. Genetic screening and counseling can also give insight into your risk.”
For women who have a higher than average risk, additional screenings such as breast MRI or breast ultrasound may be necessary. There are also medica-tions that can help lower the risk, and for certain women meeting the established criteria, preventive surgery may be an option.
“Some women who are very high risk choose pre-ventive surgery,” says Yoga. “When done before cancer is present, the surgeon has the most options available for performing a nipple-sparing procedure.”
Breast cancer awareness is more than a pink ribbon; it is a reminder that women should be proactive with their breast health. Knowledge is power. Talk with your doctor about your individual risk of breast cancer and schedule your annual mammogram—and remind friends and family to do the same.

New devices improve quality of life
Delray Beach resident Barbara Clark remem-bers when doctors told her she only had three
years to live due to a weakened heart condition. She had a weak mitral valve, which caused her heart to work inefficiently, leaving her feeling tired and lethargic all the time.
Doctors this past summer determined that Clark was not a candidate for surgery but that she would be an ideal patient for a new non-surgical procedure with a device known as the MitraClip. Using a catheter through the groin, interventional cardiologist George Daniel, M.D., inserted the MitraClip and implanted it into Clark’s mitral valve. This clip works to keep the blood flowing properly through the mitral valve, ensuring that oxygenated blood can be pumped successfully through the body.
Now, at age 90, Clark says she feels like she has a “new lease on life.” The former New York hair model enjoys dining out with her husband, Ted, spending time with her new great grandson and going to get her hair done. “Five years ago, they didn’t have this medical technology, and now look at me with a new heart that works as good as ever,” said Clark. “I’m really glad I could make it to see this wonderful advancement in my lifetime.”
New Implantable Device for Arrythmia PatientsBethesda Heart Hospital now offers a new procedure for patients with arrythmia. Under the direction of cardiac electrophysiologist Yoel Vivas, M.D., patients who suffer from irregular heart beat may be candidates for implantation of the INTICA–CRT device, for cardiac resynchronization therapy.
HEARTMATTERS OF THE
A PACER THE SIZE OF A PILLPacemakers are getting smaller and smaller. Now,
Luis F. Mora, M.D., cardiac electrophysiologist, has
successfully implanted the first non-surgical,
leadless pacemaker at Bethesda. Measuring 25.9
mm (or just over 1 inch, the size of a large vitamin
pill) and 6.7 mm in diameter, the MICRA pacemaker
from Medtronic is inserted via a cathether in the
patient’s groin and can be placed in the heart
without any surgical incisions. The procedure takes
less than an hour, and patients go home either the
same day or after one night of observation. Because
there are no surgical incisions, patients do not have
any scars on their chests, experience minimal
complications (including less risk of serious
infections than with conventional pacemakers) and
can return to their active lifestyles after one week.
There are no age limits for the procedure, making it
a very attractive new option for anyone requiring a
single-chamber pacemaker.
Using a non-surgical procedure, interventional cardiologist George Daniel, M.D., implanted a new device that improved the blood flow through Barbara Clark’s heart valve. Now she and her husband, Ted, feel she has a “new lease on life.”
CRT is used to treat the symptoms and complica-tions associated with certain types of heart failure. It helps the pumping chambers to beat in a coordinated manner so that the heart works properly. By improv-ing blood flow, CRT may reduce heart failure symptoms, improving patients’ quality of life and reducing mortality.
This new INTICA device only has two leads, result-ing in the procedure being performed in less time with less risk of infection. As a result, the patient can go home by the following day.

BAPTIST HEALTH SOUTH FLORIDA
Bethesda Hospital Foundation
This is a historic time for the Bethesda
Hospital Foundation. The culmination of
this new partnership between Bethesda
Health and Baptist Health South Florida
is an unprecedented milestone for not-for-
profit healthcare in Palm Beach County.
A testament to the work done so far, it
brings new and exciting opportunities to
build on the hallmarks that have made
Bethesda the hospital that this commu-
nity has trusted since 1959.
Seventy years ago, a group of commu-
nity leaders had a vision to form the
Gulfstream Hospital Association. From
those humble beginnings, their foresight
and perseverance led the way to what is
now Bethesda Health and the Bethesda
Hospital Foundation. A partnership built
on philanthropy with a mission to serve
our community, the Foundation has been
an integral part of all of Bethesda’s
accomplishments. Today, Bethesda
serves communities from Wellington to
Boca Raton through Bethesda Hospital
East, Bethesda Hospital West, Bethesda
Heart Hospital, Cornell Institute for Reha-
bilitation Medicine, as well as other
outpatient services. Bethesda is also a
teaching hospital, training medical stu-
dents and resident physicians as well as
nursing and radiography students.
We will continue to work hard for you
and for our Bethesda Hospitals. We look
forward to seeing you at this season’s
events, including the 18th Annual
Women of Grace Luncheon next month
supporting the vital services of the
Bethesda Center for Women and Chil-
dren. In 2018, we hope you can join
us for the Pro-Am, Jewels & Jeans gala
and the historic Bethesda Ball.
I thank you for your longstanding
commitment and support, and assure
you that we remain focused on our
community and the needs of Bethesda
Health. Our mission is to raise funds
and philanthropic assets that benefit
our Bethesda Hospitals. We look for-
ward to your continued generosity for
a promising future for expanded
healthcare services in our community.
