As my calendar fills with the round of meetings and committees the Chamber is involved with, my spirits are lifted by the positivity I come across on a regular basis.

I am hearing about business growth, recruitment and even investment in expansion plans as I visit some of our members. All this despite the weather! Chamber brollies have been well used this year, have you checked out our posting on YouTube?

There is no denying that things are still tricky out there, but your Chamber is as confident about the future of Ayrshire as it’s ever been.

Whilst recovery is slow for some sectors, there has never been so much support available to businesses who want to invest in new staff or up skill their existing workforce. Details of grants and sources of funding, including our own Graduate Recruitment Incentive, can be accessed via our website home page – just click on the green “Support to Employers” banner.

2014 got off to a flying start with events and training workshops and, at the time of writing this, we are expecting 480 guests at our Annual Dinner. The winners of the Business Excellence Awards will also be announced at the dinner and we thank the sponsors of these awards.

We have expanded our Business Forum and our first Forum, focussing on the future of Prestwick Airport, saw over 170 delegates feeding into the Transport Scotland Consultation. Future Forums will discuss; Skills and Employability, Town Centre Regeneration, and Connectivity and Transport Infrastructure. The Business Forum gives businesses the opportunity to hear from experts and, more importantly, to have ‘a voice’ in matters important to the growth and development of the Ayrshire Economy. In 2012, a collaborative venture involving GlaxoSmithKline and Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce supported the local community with a £400,000 fund under the banner of the Community Development Fund. Part of the initiative helps to fund new apprenticeships for a 3 or 4 year period.

The Chamber recently caught up with apprentice Gary Ross, who is training at Precision Tooling Services Ltd.

Precision Tooling Services Ltd., provides a manufacturing facility for machined components for a range of customers within the Aerospace, Automotive, Renewables and Oil & Gas industries. Established for over 25 years and located in the aerospace park at Prestwick Airport.

Brian Taggart, Technical Manager, started as an apprentice 25 years ago when manufacturing was mostly for oil and gas.

With a workforce growing from 8 to 60 over the years, he has seen the company struggle through downturns, and develop and grow into the automotive

and aerospace sectors. Parts of the plant are currently operating 24/7.

Brain explains, “We have always taken on apprentices, our General Manger and Shop Manager both started as apprentices. Work in Ayrshire dropped away for a while and we struggled for a few years. We are currently in a position to offer more apprenticeships, Gary is one of 3 that we are training up. They’re going to be the future of the company, we’d like them to stay on and take over from me one day.” Brain notes, “There has been a big shortage in skills level, engineering is making a comeback, everyone wants engineers.”

Apprentice Gary Ross, now 19, studied English, Maths, History, Biology, Chemistry and Physics and PE in 6th year.

Gary says, “When I was younger, I wanted to be a bio/medical scientist. My Dad’s an engineer and after visiting during the school holidays, I enjoyed seeing what he did.”

Gary has completed a NC at East Kilbride Training Centre, concentrating on practical skills for 6months. Starting in August he will continue his studies with a HNC at Langside College.

On a daily basis, at Precision, Gary is tasked with; programming, set up and running of machines.

Brian explains, “We have different sections our apprentices work in; milling, turning, CNC milling, CNC turning and grinding. We put our apprentices in each section with a tradesman to look after them. First they are shown how to programme a machine and then run it, the next stage is for the apprentice to programme the machine with approval from the tradesman. Gary will continue to do more by himself but his work will always be checked by a tradesman first.”

Gary adds, “I’m doing conversational programming at the moment.”

Brian continues, “The programme is simple to use, how to make the job is the hard part. There is a required skill level in taking a basic block and deciding which operations to use in order to plan how it will be manufactured.”

Gary adds, “I like getting a drawing, thinking about how to get from a block of material to the finished product, what operations do I have to do? Making sure everything runs smoothly, getting the size checked. It’s a good feeling when I get it right.”

Currently, Gary is tasked with a job for 330 pieces which involves 2000 manual tool changes. Brian explains “This could have been done automatically on a different machine, but for Gary’s benefit he is learning not to get complacent, his mind must always be active…like a goal keeper in a football team, he may not do anything for 10 minutes but then has to make that great save.”

Gary says, “I’m looking forward to getting onto turning as I’ve not done any since the Training Centre. I like doing every job, if it’s something I haven’t done before. I like learning how I am going to do it and make sure it’s right.”

Brian concludes, “If you go a day and haven’t learned anything it’s a waste of time.”

Scotland’s SMEs are eager to board the export express, but it’s a tough business getting a ticket

In the macro-economic sphere, there is every reason to be satisfied that the message is hitting home. The Scotch whisky industry has shrugged off the worldwide recession with exports up 71% between 2006 and 2011 to £4.23 billion. Food exports have risen as spectacularly, up 65% in the same period.

Our big engineers are also carrying the baton of a fine tradition, with companies such as Wood Group, Weir Group, Aggreko and Clyde Blowers not only operating in a global environment but beating the opposition off the park.

Now, say the export enthusiasts, it’s time for Scotland’s SMEs to step up to the plate. Time for them to essay forth into the world and pick the low hanging fruits from the tree of export success.

Would that it were so easy.

The hard fact of life on the lower rungs of the corporate ladder is that SMEs, regardless of the quality of their offering, face a Sisyphean task breaking into

established markets in the economies in which the real money now resides.

It is particularly difficult as a would-be exporter not to feel some sympathy for Willy Loman, trudging the streets with his case of samples in the Death of a Salesman. The 21st century equivalent for Scottish exporters is transiting the arrivals and departures halls at Schiphol on the way to and from the Far East.

At AvantiCell, we have an established network of contacts in Europe which, in the main, has been built through persistent technical dialogue by the company’s co-founder, Dr Colin Wilde, with technology leaders in academia. It is often through extension to their industry contacts that AvantiCell has extended its commercial reach.

In markets in the east, where a significant degree of the world’s biotechnology work is now taking place, it is a different story. It is a long hard slog of knocking on doors, attending trade shows and, increasingly, bio-partnering - a kind of speed-dating for businesses where you have a limited time to make your pitch to a succession of different parties.

It is easy to be tripped by unexpected cultural and social mores. It is rare to encounter anything but scrupulous courtesy when doing face to face business in many Asian countries. At the same time, however, exporters have to be acutely aware that while they may be at the top of the agenda while they are in the room with a prospective customer, they are often just a vague memory by the time they have shut the door behind them on the way out!

At AvantiCell we are dealing with a

very delicate type of product - live human and animal cells. Selling them internationally is challenging, as they are so temperature sensitive. A few degrees the wrong way and they, quite literally, are dead.

This means we have to establish strong working relationships not only with customers but with transportation experts and couriers whom we have to trust to handle our product appropriately.

Recently, we have gained a foothold in Japan - and curiously, the door was opened by an Irishman who is now living in that country. Previous years of approaches to Japanese potential customers had yielded insignificant results.

Once established in Eastern markets, the relationships can be strong and lasting. At the official launch of a joint venture between AvantiCell and a Malaysian partner, we were welcomed by seven Malaysian Government ministers, the UK High Commissioner, the UK chief scientific adviser and the EU Ambassador.

The message is clear: both Scottish and British companies are welcome on the other side of the world and the fruits of international trade are sweet. But you have to put in loads of time and effort. When did anything good come easily?

Alan Clarke of Scottish Bakers, said “We have brought together the best pies and baked goods in the land and we can really celebrate the achievement of our hard working butchers and bakers. Congratulations to our winner, and indeed everyone taking away a prize, they are all winners in my book.”

The competition is supported by Scottish Bakers and the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders. Both trade associations actively support and promote bakers and butchers in Scotland by encouraging and sharing best practise. Alan Clarke and Douglas Scott, respective Chief Executives of both Associations were impressed with the overall standard of the products and gave thanks to Bako Northern and Scotland who have sponsored the competition.

Championships 2014

A prestigious national awards ceremony took place at the House of Lords to recognise those companies that have been involved with the UK charity STEMnet, which exists to encourage young people in schools to get involved in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. GE Caledonian was nominated for its “immense dedication to inspiring young people” in these subjects. Laura Robertson, Alex Henderson, Claire McConachie and Denise Lawson attended the ceremony on behalf of Cal’s STEM team and were delighted to be awarded ‘Most Dedicated Employer To STEM’. This award recognises the huge amount of effort from a significant number of Cal employees over the last few years.

Taking your retirement income is one of the biggest financial decisions of your life so seek advice, do not make an expensive mistake.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is set to probe pension providers after its review into the annuity market found that 80% of consumers could secure a more generous retirement income. The regulator has found that up to 150,000 consumers every year could benefit from shopping around by as much as an extra £1,500.

It found that 60% of consumers bought an annuity from their pension scheme provider and said that all annuities sold to existing customers were expected to be more profitable than those sold on the open market option.

The FCA will use its new competition powers to launch

a market review to look into the conduct of pension providers, consumer behavior and the structure of the retirement income market. It will also look specifically at the providers’ role in shaping consumer decision.

Once you’ve bought an annuity you can’t change your mind. Persuasive techniques are being used by some providers who only have their own interests at heart. Most do not offer Lifestyle, Fixed term or Invested annuities, which greatly limit the choice available to the consumer. Also most people do not understand they are not getting advice just a handful of options to select from.

It found that consumers eligible for enhanced annuities were losing out on substantial levels of income. Seek advice on what is most appropriate for you based on your circumstances.

Senior managers from GE Caledonian and Ayrshire College engineering staff recently celebrated being Highly Commended for an Employer Engagement Award by the College Development Network.

This recognised the creative approaches the College has taken to engaging with employers, in particular an innovative pre-apprenticeship engineering programme which helps young people gain vital on-the-job experience. Building on the success of this programme, GE Caledonian worked with the College to create a bespoke course to meet its needs, and the company now recruits apprentices only from Ayrshire College.

Going further, the College and GE Caledonian created a sector-leading schools programme where fifth and sixth year pupils attend the College on a day release programme to undertake key elements of the pre-apprenticeship programme, and continue with science and technology subjects at school.

Ged Freel, Curriculum Leader for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Ayrshire College said “Ayrshire College is delighted to continue this successful partnership, which benefits both our students and our partner GE Caledonian. This initiative allows our students to see a clear path from the College to a career in Engineering, which gives them motivation and focus. To be formally recognised with an award for our partnership working is very welcome.”

Heather Dunk, Principal of Ayrshire College said “Making a positive difference to our local communities by working with our industry partners is at the heart of our employer engagement activities. This exciting partnership provides local young people with the opportunity to gain first class training within a global organisation, right here in Ayrshire. This award is a fine recognition for the hard work of everyone involved in the partnership.”

Laura Robertson, Apprentice Co-Ordinator with GE Caledonian said “The Engineering Department at Ayrshire College works hard to understand the needs of the industry and are putting measures in place to ensure the College is at the cutting edge of technology. We have developed a close relationship with the College during the past couple of years, evident in the open and honest communication pathway we have created to improve and build on our students’ learning experience. Their input has helped us implement improvements at GE Caledonian related to our SVQ level 3 training and assessing, which has been very beneficial. Staff in the College’s Engineering Department are extremely knowledgeable about the industry, which is crucial to us and other companies who work with the College.”

Developing Ayrshire’s Young Workforce

Around 15 new jobs are being created at i3 Irvine’s Enterprise Area – with the expansion of a cutting-edge telecommunications company.

Fergus Ewing, the Scottish Government’s Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism, was shown round Oricom in the Enterprise Area as part of a visit and briefing organised by Irvine Bay Regeneration Company.

The Minister said: “In creating the Enterprise Area in Irvine nearly two years ago, it was the Scottish Government’s intention to help in attracting investment and boosting job creation. We are delighted that this is bearing fruit, and I value this opportunity to learn about progress to date and the future plans for the site.”

The Minister was also hearing about a number of key projects taking place within i3 Irvine’s Enterprise Area which has seen employment increase by 160 in the first year of designation with the potential of up to 1,500 more jobs as companies take advantage of the financial incentives, infrastructure and premises available.

Oricom specialises in the design, supply, installation and support of telecommunication systems and Information Technology Networks for SMB and Enterprise organisations in the UK. Oricom has moved into the recently renovated Innovation B office space at Cockburn Place, which was specifically tailored around their needs. The refurbishment of the building was undertaken by Irvine Bay with funding support from Scottish Enterprise.

Gavin Brown, Oricom Operations Director, said: “The building and i3 business park will help us along our growth path. Our plan is to expand the Irvine branch from 25 jobs to 40, adding staff in sales and in the service centre while constantly adding demonstration suites. Ayrshire will be our head office and effectively our nerve centre where sales, service and finance all come together.”

Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay, said: “This is tremendous news for the area and demonstrates yet again the enormous value of the Enterprise Area to the region in helping attract investment, jobs and realise opportunities. We are seeing significant interest in the Enterprise Area from businesses within Scotland and from overseas, and already we have secured a number of projects which are creating jobs and helping develop a stronger and more sustainable local economy.”

North Ayrshire Council Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, Marie Burns, said: “I would like to congratulate Oricom on their success to date and wish them well as the business expands. Their experience shows how a tailor-made package can be readily put together to suit specific businesses. The ambitious approach will see 150 North Ayrshire companies given their own dedicated Account Managers to work alongside them to provide bespoke business assistance. A new, one-team approach, named Team North Ayrshire, has been introduced to offer a streamlined single point of contact – giving companies an all-important competitive edge in today’s challenging marketplace.

The new approach is the result of months of work carried out by North Ayrshire Economic Development and Regeneration Board, a partnership of public and private sector organisations committed to regenerating the area.

The Board, established in late 2011, has responded to requests from the private sector for greater collaboration, a single point of contact and for more flexible support programmes. The results have given a clear insight into where efforts need to be concentrated and have helped to shape the new business approach.

Si Restaurant owner Malcolm Simpson, speaking as a private sector member of the EDR Board, said, “I know only too well the difficulties firms face trying to juggle day-to-day work with finding time to develop and grow their companies. Until now, local business people have been confused by the number and range of agencies offering different types of support and many just don’t have the time to search out the right organisation for assistance. This launch shows the willingness of the business support agencies to interact on a different level - now it’s up to local companies to respond and grasp this opportunity.”

Marking the 130th birthday of Joseph Pilates, the Pilates Teacher Association launched in Troon, which will be the base for this new community of Teachers with a worldwide audience. John Scott MSP attended a small launch party in the studio on Church Street.

Lesley McPherson, Director of the Pliates Teacher Associations says, “The Pilates Industry is worth many millions of pounds and we are bringing together Pilates teachers from around the world to set a standard of professionalism under an AVR ( Accredited voluntary register) . Association launches in Troon

Marie Curie Cancer Care’s local Fundraisers, Claire Stuart-Paulin and Fiona Leitch are appealing for businesses in Ayrshire to support the charity’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal.

The appeal is Marie Curie’s biggest fundraiser, which encourages everyone to give a donation and wear a daffodil pin in March.

The charity needs local companies to support them, perhaps by holding a collection in their workplace or taking a box of daffodil pins to have on their reception desk or even by asking staff to dress in yellow for a day in March. The money raised will help Marie Curie Nurses to provide more free care to local people with terminal illnesses in their own homes.

Maureen Stevenson, Fundraising Manager for Marie Curie Cancer Care, in South Scotland said: “Claire and Fiona are inundated with daffodils and we would love to work with local companies throughout Ayrshire during our Great Daffodil Appeal. Border Cars Young Creative Final 2014

It might have been a dark, wet night in February but that didn’t stop the masses flocking to Border Cars on Heathfield Road, Ayr for the Young Creative Student competition Final 2014, the culmination of 6 months of hard work and team effort from Border Cars and Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce.

Border Cars Group has run the competition in the past, but this was the first time it has been brought to Ayrshire. Schools across the region were invited to take part and there was a fantastic response with 20 schools submitting entries.

School pupils were

given a brief to come up with a bold, colourful and creative design, which followed a low carbon energy theme and advertised Border Cars. The winning designs to be transferred onto 3 courtesy cars and driven around Ayrshire by Border Cars customers throughout 2014. Each winner, from the P3-4, P5-6 and P7 categories winning £100 and the overall winner also won a tablet and £1000 worth of computer equipment for their school.

The invited judging panel, comprising representatives from North, South and East Ayrshire councils, the Energy Agency and Big Blue Dog Design had a difficult task shortlisting the 800 entries.

All the school pupils, who had taken part, were invited to attend the Final. Competition entries were displayed around the showroom. Burgers, hotdogs and refreshments were served and there was even a sweetie stand! Troon Pipe Band kicked off the evening in style as parents, pupils and teachers got ready for the night’s entertainment.

Host for the evening, West FM’s Fiona Shields, introduced Britain’s Got Talent Winner and Ayrshire’s very own Jai McDowall, onto the stage for a couple of musical numbers. Speakers included, Ayrshire Chamber Chief Executive, Val Russell and Liz Marquis from the Energy Agency. Val said, “We were delighted to partner with Borders Cars for this competition. At the Chamber, we actively promote and encourage Education/Employers links and it’s great to see how well this competition has captivated the

creativity of the children as well as raising awareness

of low carbon energy.”

The extent to which employers should be flexible in terms of accommodating the individual circumstances of their staff is one which causes much debate. Attitudes can stretch from, “Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile” or, “Just say no!” to “If I say no they might take me to a Tribunal”.There is a legal framework within which all employers operate in relation to requests for flexible working, to suit individual needs. In summary, any employee can make such a request in writing, known as a statutory application, provided they have 26 weeks continuous service at the time of the request. Only one such statutory application can be made each year.The receipt of such a request requires an employer to offer a meeting to the employee within 28 days of receipt and then to give a decision within 14 days of any such meeting. There is no obligation on an employer to agree to any request, although an appeal must be offered if the requested is initially declined. If the request is met, the employer must issue a new contract document incorporating the details and conditions of any change.The main note of caution for employers in this situation surrounds the risk of allegations of inconsistent and unfair, even discriminatory treatment towards an employee. Chamber HR recommends:• A written policy for flexible working• Consistent approaches to all requests, thus

avoiding different decisions from different managers on the same issue

• Full consideration of the business cost implications of agreeing to a request

• Safeguarding productivity levels and service standards at all times

• Awareness of any future precedents that may be set by the decision

• Staff loyalty benefits that can be achieved through the flexible approach

• Never be seen to have prejudged any decision before a meeting has taken place

Anecdotal evidence suggests that a flexible approach by employers generates the same attitude from employees. A two way commitment to accommodate the other’s short term problems can mean that both parties will “go the extra mile” for each other. Flexible Attitude?Future Government Plans for the application of Health and Safety LegislationIt has been reported that David Cameron has in an announcement and speech that the one million self-employed people at work in the UK will be wholly exempt from health and safety law when the proposed Deregulation Bill comes into force.

In a speech given to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) the Prime Minister has outlined the proposed relaxation or removal of over 3,000 regulations, which includes “needless” health and safety regulation. “We will scrap over-zealous rules which dictate how to use a ladder at work or what no-smoking signs must look like,” he said. “We’ve changed the law so that businesses are no longer automatically liable for an accident that isn’t their fault. The new Deregulation Bill will exempt one million self-employed people from health and safety law altogether.”

Along with other many health and safety organisations Qdos Consulting, Chamber HR providers, supports the simplification of legislation and guidance, but are against lowering standards that could lead to more accidents and deaths.

Confusion and uncertainty is potentially damaging to the good work and progressive improvements that have been made in workplace incident and accident outcomes that have been fought for by all at work, including the self-employed, across the board over the last 40 years or so.

The Government proposals are possibly damaging and may well put at risk more persons at work, the current cost it is calculated to be over £13 billion per year and at least double taking into consideration occupational diseases such as asbestosis and other work related cancers along with property damage. Whereas, good effective standards of health and safety across all industries and sectors is shown to save lives, support business and help the economy.

Vattenfall, the state owned Swedish energy company which is seeking planning permission for the up to £190 million South Kyle Wind Farm, wants to register the interest of more than 600 businesses in Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway to help build and operate the 50 wind turbine project.

It is estimated that throughout the two year construction period and 25 years of operations, South Kyle Wind Farm could help retain or create more than 150 local jobs. Vattenfall has committed to maximising economic benefit to the region’s economy and repeating local supply chain successes it has delivered in South Wales and North East Scotland.

“Piers Guy, Vattenfall’s Director of Wind Development in the UK, said: “Vattenfall wants to register as much local business interest in South Kyle as it can and that is why we have established a very ambitious target to give more than 600 businesses the edge through the process.”

“We have found in places like South Wales and Aberdeenshire, where we are building schemes right now, that early supply chain registration and engagement is necessary to ensure local companies have the time and information to prepare to compete for contracts on a major inward investment project like South Kyle. We will be following up with supply chain events to support local businesses to enter the renewables supply chain, which is a growing industry in the UK and beyond.”

One of the organisations that have recently registered their interest in South Kyle is AAT Wind Energy Ltd who provide maintenance and inspection service for wind turbine safety and lifting equipment.

Eddie Devlin, Company Director, AAT Wind Energy Limited said: “The onshore wind industry has created opportunities for local businesses during times of recession and austerity and the additional investment by Vattenfall in such a large

project would provide further benefits throughout Ayrshire at a time when investment is scarce.”

An exciting project to give students with learning disabilities the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the workplace was launched at University Hospital Crosshouse in December.

Project SEARCH, which originated in Cincinnati sixteen years ago, involves a partnership between a host business, education services and adult supported employment. A collaboration between NHS Ayrshire & Arran, East Ayrshire Council, Ayrshire College and the Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability (SCLD) will help 17-24 year olds in East Ayrshire who have learning difficulties and/ or are on the autistic spectrum, build skills for employment.

Through a combination of classroom sessions and hands-on work placements at University Hospital Crosshouse, the project will assist students, in their last year of education, prepare to find a job.

Patricia Leiser, NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Human Resources Director, explains: “We currently have ten interns on a one-year placement with us who are providing essential support services within a

range of areas. Project SEARCH provides the interns with intensive, p e r s o n a l i s e d support which helps to boost their confidence, while immersion in the hospital environment helps to build the work skills they need for employment. We

are proud to be part of Project SEARCH and welcome the effective partnership working which this initiative has demonstrated.”

During their placement, the interns are supported by a full-time Instructor from Ayrshire College and a full-time Job Coach from East Ayrshire Council.

Bernadette McGuire, Vice Principal of Learning and Teaching at Ayrshire College, said: “This successful partnership really helps to support young people moving from college to the workplace. The internship has provided opportunities for our students to gain interview experience, explore a career path and develop employability skills.

This has given our students confidence and job seeking abilities which will undoubtedly improve their chances of securing employment in the future.”

Chris Creegan, Chief Executive Officer of Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability, said: “SCLD is delighted at the expansion of Project SEARCH Scotland into East Ayrshire. The launch comes at an exciting time for Project SEARCH in Scotland having recently received national recognition in the ‘Support to Work’ category of the prestigious SURF Awards. The East Ayrshire site is one of three new sites this year, bringing the total to six across Scotland. Further expansion is anticipated with four more in development.

While SCLD leads the Project SEARCH work in Scotland, the commitment of local partners in each of the sites is vital to achieving in successful outcomes for young people with learning disabilities and on the autism spectrum. We therefore are very much looking forward to working alongside partners in East Ayrshire to bring about positive change locally.”

Also in January, we were pleased to welcome Fergus Ewing, Minister for Energy, Enterprise & Tourism. Our members had their questions ready for Mr Ewing and the opportunity to meet and discuss current business issues directly with him over a networking lunch at The Park Hotel.

The first speed networking event of the year was held in the impressive new facilities at Hansel Alliance... in the state of the art, Our Space , a purpose built facility to cater for the needs of people living

with disabilities, offering a range of services and support. A lively networking session took place, members had their 90 second pitch ready ... a fabulous buzz and some great networking!

We “chanted” a complete sell out at McCallum Bagpipes, Kilmarnock,

where members enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the factory; following the process of bagpipe and pipe chanter making from design and manufacture to distribution of the finished product. A super Ayrshire success story and a great event where our members also enjoyed lunch and a piping demonstration.... thanks to our hosts and to the team at McCallums.

Access Finance for Business Growth Breakfast Panel meeting was next on the agenda, at the Marine Hotel, Troon. Our panel members included; Nicholas Boyle - RBS, Andrew Dickson - WSLF, Allan Ross - First Independent Finance, Derek Brown - Jumpstart and Simon Leslie - Resource Efficient Scotland. The experts gave advice on funding and support available to business to encourage growth and development. The event was professionally chaired by Ronnie Smith - CEO of Lanarkshire Enterprise Services Ltd.

Chamber Training Academy sessions continue to flourish, providing the trainees with informative, interactive sessions on various topics of business interest. Recent topics have included; An Introduction to Social Media by Bread & Butter Marketing, Giving Great Presentations with Deva Training, Best Practice and Core Skills with Ology Business Coaching and Get the Best from your Team with Square Circle HR.
