Research from Robert Marzano indicates that when students understand the vocabulary used in a text, it is easier forthem to understand the text itself. The reason for this is that knowledge of vocabulary is linked to backgroundknowledge which is linked in turn to comprehension.

Achieve3000 lessons include vocabulary components that help students understand the content of the nonfictionarticles. When students' vocabulary performance improves, it is likely that their comprehension is also improving.

Between September and January, students completed 9,194 vocabulary questions. Students demonstrated anaverage 10.2 point gain on the vocabulary components of Florida's Florida Standards.

Students whoscored 75% or higher on the multiple-choice activity made the greatest Lexile growth on average, more than two timesthe expected growth norms.
