Massey University has a reputation for excellence in innovation and the creation of new knowledge.
Our research spans discovery, commercialisation, scholarship and the production of creative works and is inclusive of both professional and clinical practice. We have an unrivalled record of research excellence in subject areas vital to New Zealand’s society and economy, including agricultural and animal sciences, and reaching back almost 50 years and more than 130 years’ in the creative arts. Our recognised areas of research strength are veterinary science, land and food-based research, nursing and public health, key areas of the social sciences and creative arts and design.

COLLEGE OF SCIENCESProfessor Benoit GuieysseSchool of Engineering and Advanced TechnologyProfessor Guieysse is an expert in environmental and chemical engineering who is developing bioprocesses for wastewater treatment and waste valorisation. His research has generated new fundamental knowledge and mathematical tools for process optimisation in algal biotechnology. He is a member of the Management Committee of the Chemical Industries group of the International Water Association and frequently reviews grant applications for various research agencies (USA, Singapore, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Canada) and consults for local councils and companies. His research programmes have been in New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden and France and he continues to supervise Master and PhD students.
COLLEGE OF CREATIVE ARTSAssociate Professor Andre Ktori Head of School, Te Rewa O Puanga - the School of Music and Creative Media Production Working in music, media and design for over 30 years, Associate Professor Andre Ktori is best known for his work in interactive music. He founded the London based interactive music collective AudioRom, creating enhanced interactive music CDs such as ShiftControl. Ktori is a BAFTA, Milia d’Or and Millennium Product award winner and has exhibited internationally at The Tate Britain, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Musée du Louvre, ISEA and Fuse. Ktori has worked in convergence media developing cross-platform opportunities for organisations such as the BBC, Sky, Open, V2 and Nokia, predominantly in sound and music. His current research at Massey is in design and composition for generative, interactive and reactive music application.
COLLEGE OF HEALTHProfessor Philippa Gander Director of the Sleep/Wake Centre Philippa established the Sleep/Wake Research Centre in Wellington in 1998. Her original research training was in chronobiology. Following a Senior Fulbright Fellowship at Harvard Medical School, she joined the Fatigue Countermeasures Program at NASA, working on field studies of pilot fatigue in different aviation operations and on mathematical modeling of the human sleep/wake cycle. Philippa has a particular interest in advancing and applying scientific knowledge to develop solutions to the health and safety challenges generated by current trends to restrict sleep and increase 24/7 work and entertainment. Professor Gander was made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to the study of sleep and fatigue.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCESProfessor Glenda Anthony Co-director of the Centre of Excellence for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME) Professor Anthony uses her portfolio of research to support teachers to learn the work of ambitious mathematics teaching. A Fulbright-Harkness Fellowship (2011) enabled her to collaborate with researchers in the United States. Her research programme works towards an agenda of improvement for maths learners—be it through recruiting and preparing quality teachers, understanding quality teaching, and understanding mathematics learning and learners. She frequently works with teachers, and regards the task of taking research ideas and making them more accessible to the audiences who might use them as a key responsibility. Her contribution to the mathematics education research was recognised with the award of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia Career Research Medal (2013).
MASSEY BUSINESS SCHOOLProfessor Harald Van Heerde Research Professor Professor Harald van Heerde is considered one of the world’s leading marketing scientists. Originally from the Netherlands, he earned his PhD in Economics at the University of Groningen. He has been placed in the top ten in the world for marketing research by the American Marketing Association (AMA). In his research, Harald uses econometric models to improve marketing decision making. His expertise includes the measurement of advertising, price and sales promotion effects, loyalty programmes, marketing mix strategies to build brands, and retail assortment optimisation. Van Heerde is an Associate Editor at Journal of Marketing Research and at Marketing Science. He serves on the editorial boards of International Journal of Research in Marketing and the Journal of Marketing.

If you are entering on a student visa then Immigration New Zealand requires you to have NZ$15,000 available in addition to your course fees for each year you’ll be studying in New Zealand, plus an additional NZ$2,000 to cover a return ticket home. You may, however, require more

MASTER’S DEGREESCoursework master’s (C) are a postgraduate degree awarded for advanced study that normally builds on the principal discipline area(s) of a qualifying undergraduate degree. It will include a research report, creative or scholarly work as defined within the programme. A coursework master’s is generally a 180 credit programme and they are structured to be completed in either 1 year (three consecutive semesters), or 1.5 years as stated. A research master’s (R) is a postgraduate degree awarded for advanced study that normally builds on the principal discipline area(s) of a qualifying undergraduate degree. A research master’s will comprise coursework and thesis and is generally a 240 credit programme (2 years), however some are 180 credit programmes (1.5 years). Tuition fees quoted are based on 120 credits of study within the programmes, unless stated otherwise. Each 15 credit course requires approximately 10-12.5 hours each week of class and study time.

Bachelor’s Degree Normally a minimum of three years full-time study.
Conjoint DegreeTwo undergraduate degrees completed simultaneously by passing a reduced number of credits in each.
CreditsEvery programme has a credit value and every course within a programme also has a credit value. For example, a typical undergraduate degree is worth 360 credits and a typical undergraduate course is worth 15 credits.
GraduateA student who has completed a Bachelor’s degree or higher.
Graduate DiplomaA qualification open to graduates or to those who have been able to demonstrate equivalent experience.
Honours DegreeA Postgraduate qualification equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma. Entry to an Honours programme requires prior high academic performance.
Level of courseTypical undergraduate degrees consist of 100, 200 and 300-level courses. 100-level courses are taught in the first year, 200-level courses in second year and 300-level courses may be studied once 200-level courses are successfully completed. Postgraduate courses are taught at 700, 800 and 900-levels.
MajorA substantial component of an undergraduate degree (at least a quarter of all the courses in the degree).
Master’s DegreeA postgraduate degree that normally builds on the area of study within a qualifying undergraduate degree.
MinorA combination of courses in an undergraduate degree that is smaller than a major.
CourseA module of work with a unique code number involving lectures, tutorials, seminars, and practicals. A typical undergraduate degree, studied full-time, would consist of 8 courses per year, with 4 in each semester.
Course CodeEach course has a six-figure code to identify it. For example, in course 150.214 the ‘150’ denotes Māori Studies, the ‘2’ shows it is a 200-level course and the final two digits ‘14’ identify the course.

SemesterMassey University has two semesters each year (Semester 1 and Semester 2). Each normally involves 13 weeks of teaching followed by exams. There is also a summer semester known as Summer School.
