Guidance: Effective Sept. 1, 2017, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 179, David’s Law, which addresses how schools
will combat and prevent cyberbullying. For more information please visit: http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/85R/billtext/html/
SB00179I.htm. If you are concerned about interactions your daughter is having at school, please be sure to let their counselor or
an administrator know so that we can help her sort through the situation and put a stop to what is going on. Students can also
report bullying situations anonymously by using an online form at: http://tinyurl.com/ywlareportingform
Gifted and Talented: The Gifted and Talented Referral Education (GATE) referral window will be October 5-23, 2020. If you
know of a student whom you would like to refer to be evaluated for GATE, please contact the counseling department. If your
daughter has already been identified with SAISD you do not have to re-refer. Please email Ms. Coss at [email protected] with

October is one of the busiest months in the college application season, as seniors are applying to colleges and deadlines begin to
approach quickly. Seniors are currently working on college essays...lots of college essays! Please continue to encourage them at
home. Our pace is a little bit different this year due to the remote learning environment. We are spending LOTS of time on Zoom
in individual conferences. I am in the AVID IV class with seniors each morning and have afternoon appointments they can sign
up for throughout the afternoon, so please encourage them to do so if they are indicating they need support.
FAFSA FAFSA Season is here! This is the month we want all our seniors to file their FAFSA. It is also important to check with prospec-
tive colleges to see if they require additional financial aid forms, such as the CSS Profile. Our internal deadline to complete these
forms is October 9th. We want to ensure that we take care of any issues that may arise during this process by being proactive in
completing all forms. If we have not set an appointment, please make sure to schedule an appointment with Ms. Cash.
Testing for College 11th grade students will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14th and 10th grade will be testing on Wednesday, October
29th . There will be additional protocols for the exam in order to provide a safe testing environment. Our testing coordinator will
be reviewing the logistics with students through their AVID III course or advisory. Please make sure students get a good night’s
sleep and eat a solid breakfast. The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT. For 11th graders, it is also the qualifying exam for the
National Merit & National Achievement Scholarship Programs.
12th grade students will also be taking either the ACT on Tuesday, October 6th, or the SAT on Wednesday, Oct. 14th. Please
make sure your child is doing test prep via Khan Academy or with an SAT/ ACT Practice manual.
At this time, 6th-9th graders will not be taking the PSAT 8/9 until later in the spring semester.
College Representative Visits @ YWLA: The College Center is hosting college admissions representatives virtually during the
fall. Junior and Senior students are highly encouraged to meet with these reps to explore their college options. Visits are
published on SchooLinks and students must register through this platform.
