Go to any mainstream school in a conven-tional area of the country and ask

its students of what and most importantly why they are choosing a certain field and their blank expressions will give you an idea of the failure of career counseling in Pakistan. The children mostly know of two fields, medical and engineering, and even when most of them don’t want to pursue it, they are pressurized to do so.

Career counseling means going beyond ‘what’ a student wants to pursue in his career, and generally the counselors fail to recognize a child’s potential and the reason why he/she should be opting for a certain profes-sion. A child is brought up with the notion that only doing engineering or medi-cal will bring him honor and a certain level of adequate social status. The textbooks which promote rote learn-ing and bigoted mindset are more than unsuccessful in developing a passion for learning in them. A demar-cation between matricula-tion and O level’s students

worsen the issue even more. Fields such as business and accounting are also becom-

ing popular to some extent, but most parents still want their child to become a

doctor or an engineer; and why? Because Aunt XYZ’s multi-talented daughter went to medical and uncle ABC’s dear boy had gotten into a reputable engineer-ing college. Have someone ever heard from a student that his/her parents want to be an aspiring leader, a political analyst, an athlete, a scientist or an artist? Such diversity in ambitions among students is totally absent in Pakistan.

According to a research by a NGO, out of those who pursue their higher learning, a large number of students make wrong choices. Due to lack of guidance and infor-mation, 250, 000+ students are suffering annually. 41, 000 students appear in en-

try test of medical colleges and only 5,000 of them get admission. 70,000+ stu-dents appear in entry test of engineering institutions and only 7,200 get admission (in PEC accredited programs). 150,000+ students of other groups are confused to choose any discipline. Unfortunately, the numbers of students who are utterly disappointed by not getting admission in a renowned medical or engineering in-stitution, either have to pay hefty amount of fee to do it privately or waste a year to give an attempt again the next year or enroll in ‘less-accredited’ programs known by the society like business administration or arts. So the ‘top cream’ of students should always choose medi-cal or engineering and those who fail to get there are supposed to choose the remaining fields. The uni-versities offer limited seats for medical or engineering fields and the opportunities for employment for these fields in the market are even lesser. Resultantly, the coun-try suffers the worst case of ‘brain drain’, with those are brilliantly knowledgeable but are unsuccessful in find-ing a suitable employment to meet the needs of their

family, fly abroad. Ask students in

a well-known medical or engineering university of the reason of choosing this particular field and most of them will utter ‘because my parents wished me to do so’. It is true that the par-ents want the best for their children and they want them to select a field because of the scope and vast oppor-tunities provided by it but a student’s personal prefer-ence should also be kept in mind. Every school should hire career counselors who provide children with proper guidance and the teachers and parents should help students develop their mind and teach them how they can explore within themselves of what they can do best. Students should be guided properly instead of just being provided with simple information; they should be guided about the best suited opportuni-ties for them and should be helped to select the degree which has job va-cancies and future pros-pects. So the nest time, when we ask students that why have they adopted a certain field, they should confidently say, ‘because I wanted to’.

The world around you is for you. You are center of attraction and earth revolves around you.

Without you, there is no meaning of anything.

We all know that we should respect each other but have you ever given respect to your own self? Do you know that you are unique and there’s not a single person exactly like you in the whole world. Do you know your

worth? It’s all self-esteem. What is exactly self-esteem? It’s the value and importance you give to yourself. If you have a goof self-esteem things will work out well, but if you have a poor self-esteem nothing will go right. It is not about thinking you’re perfect because we live in an imperfect world but it is to think about yourself in a positive manner. It is very important to have a positive & good

self-esteem. It makes you feel proud of the things you can do and gives you courage and daring to try new things. It makes you respect yourself and when you respect your own self others will eventually start respecting you. By having a healthy self-esteem you will make good choices with your mind and body. If you respect yourself than you are less likely to follow the crowds which are popular but are doing something dangerous. Positive self-esteem makes you aware that every part of you is worth caring for. On the other hand there is negative self-esteem. Some kids may have negative self-esteem if their parents don’t encourage them or they are made fun of. These things can affect their self-es-teem and they may not feel very nice about themselves. This can stop them from trying new things and they will feel sad. Kids with low self-esteem have difficulty in making tougher life decisions

in their future. That’s why elders should always try to boost the self-esteem of the child.

Here are some simple steps to build up a high, healthy & positive self-esteem:

• Makealistofthingsyouare good at.

• Acceptyourselfnomat-ter what color, shape or size you are.

• Alwaysremindyourselfof your good qualities.

• Giveyourselfatleasttwo compliments each day.

• Alwaysrememberthereare things about yourself you can’t change.

So always give yourself respect, worth and value and things will start to change. Follow the simple steps and have a high self-esteem. Don’t worry about future and live in the present. It is well said “Don’t let what you can’t do stop you from doing things you can do.”
