Black Box Car Insurance has revolutionised the insurance industry, particularly for Young Drivers. Due to the high claims statistics of younger drivers, something had to be done. Insurers needed to identify the good drivers from the bad and offer insurance premiums to reflect this.

With access to your own Personal Online Dashboard, you can access, monitor and review your driving performance data, as often as you like and help to improve your driving ability.

Many analysts have predicted that in the years to come, insurance premiums and claims will dramatically reduce, all because of the Black Box / Telematics technology.

As a parent or guardian, you may also want to monitor the driving habits of your children / dependants. Access to their Dashboard can be set up to review their driving performance.

Parents / guardians can also get involved with offering advice and tips on how to improve driving techniques.

Telematics works in the form of a ‘Black Box’ being fitted in your car (usually underneath your dashboard) which then measures and reports on your driving performance. The ‘Black Box’ is installed by an approved fitter, at a time and location which is suitable to you.

You can view your data via your Personal Online Dashboard. Through analysing the data, advice and tips are offered to improve driving performance. Telematics not only helps improve your driving ability, but over time, it can also help reduce your insurance premiums, should you continually drive well.

Learner driver insurance - own CarIf you have already bought your own car prior to passing your driving test, you can use that car to practice your driving techniques in. Sky Insurance have designed several policies for learners who wish to use their own car for that purpose:

- Annual Policies - for those with longer term plans - Short-term Policies - for those close to their driving test

Short-term Comprehensive Provisional Driver Policies

- Cover from 1 - 5 months- Available for policy holders aged between 17-25- Can purchase online and obtain cover immediately- Cover during your driving test (see page 7)- No restrictions on the amount of hours you can drive

The policy provides cover for Learners who are borrowing someone else’s car to practice in. The policy works as a ‘top-up’ cover, specifi cally covering the learner whilst learning in that particular car. The main owner of the vehicle must also have insurance in place covering the car under a standard car insurance policy.

Young Drivers Insurance SchemeSky Insurance have put together some information on what we believe to be the best cars to insure for New Drivers.

We have taken into account elements such as: cost, insurance group, power output and design. All of the cars we have chosen have an engine size under or equal to 1.25l, a power output under or equal to 94bhp and an insurance group of 6 or less.

An ‘Insurance Group Rating’ is a number between 1-50. Generally, the higher the number, the higher the price of insurance. The rating is based on a number of factors (including but not limited to):

Third Party Only - The minimum level of cover required by law. Should you be involved in an accident, there is cover in place for a Third Party – Person or Property. There is no cover in place for Accidental Damage, Fire or Theft to your own vehicle.

Third Party, Fire and Theft - In addition to Third Party Only, this covers vehicles against Fire and Theft claims.

Most of our policies do but always check with us first. Also, check your documentation to see when cover expires once you have passed your test.

Do I need a qualified Accompanying Driver with me?

Whilst you are learning to drive and have a provisional licence, yes. At all times. In addition to ‘L plates’ on the car.

Is there any difference between Telematics & Black Box Insurance?

Essentially, there’s no difference. Telematics is the technology used and offered within Black Box Insurance.

What is an Excess amount?

In the event of a claim, your Excess amount is the amount you will pay towards the total amount of the claim.
