THINGS TO AVOID AS A LEADER (1-5)
Winning too much: The need to win at all costs and in all
situations—when it matters, when it doesn‘t, and when it’stotally beside the point.
Adding too much value: The overwhelming desire to add ourtwo cents to every discussion.
Passing judgment: The need to rate others and impose ourstandards on them.
Making destructive comments: The needless sarcasms andcutting remarks that we think make us sound sharp andwitty.
Starting with “No” , “But” or“However” : The overuse of thesenegative qualifiers which secretly say to everyone, “I’m right. You’re wrong.”

THINGS TO AVOID AS A LEADER (6-
10)
Telling the world how smart we are: The need to show peoplewe’re smarter than they think we are.
Speaking when angry: Using emotional volatility as amanagement tool.
Negativity, or “Let me explain why that won’t work ” : The needto share our negative thoughts even when we were notasked.
Withholding information: The refusal to share information inorder to maintain an advantage over others.
Failing to give proper recognition: The inability to praise and
reward.

THINGS TO AVOID AS A LEADER (11-15)
Claiming credit that we don’t deserve: Over estimating our
contribution to any success.
Making excuses: Deflecting responsibility. The need toreposition our annoying behavior as a permanent fixture sopeople excuse us for it.
Clinging to the past: The need to deflect blame away fromourselves and onto events and people from our past; asubset of blaming everyone else.
Playing favorites: Failing to see that we are treating someoneunfairly. Rewarding people who serve you but it is not in thebest interest of the company.
Refusing to express regret: The inability to take responsibility forour actions, admit we’re wrong, or recognize how actionsaffect others

THINGS TO AVOID AS A LEADER (16-20)
Not listening: The most passive aggressive form of disrespectfor colleagues.
Failing to express gratitude: The most basic form of badmanners.
Punishing the messenger: The misguided need to attack theinnocent who are usually only trying to help us.
Passing the buck: The need to blame everyone butourselves.
An excessive need to be “me”: Exalting our faults as virtuessimply because it is who we are.
