Monday, July 8, 2019 12A THEDAILYRECORD.COM One thing that sets the Bar Association of Baltimore City (BABC) apart from most other bar associations is the depth and breadth of oppor- tunities available to its young law- yer members. The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the BABC is an uncharacteristi- cally robust division consisting of an executive committee and eleven (11) separate standing and special committees - Awards, Con- tinuing Legal Education (CLE), Events, Membership, Nominating, Policy & Planning, Public Edu- cation, Public Relations, Public Service, Mentoring, and Health & Wellness. Active involvement in a YLD Committee provides attorneys with a fun and meaningful way to contribute to the legal profession and to the people of Baltimore. It also allows young lawyers to de- velop and expand their network of friends, mentors, and legal re- sources. However, with so much to offer, it can be daunting for new attorneys and law students, par- ticularly ones without existing bar connections, to figure out where and how to get involved. If you are a social butterfly, who is interested in connecting with many other attorneys, the Membership Committee may be a good fit for you. The Membership Committee works on outreach and recruitment by organizing monthly networking events, many in con- junction with other local and specialty bar associations. If phys- ical fitness and wellness are your things, the Health and Wellness Committee incorporates these top- ics into membership and learning events. If you are more interested in ed- ucational topics, you may consider active involvement in the Continu- ing Legal Education Committee or Public Education Committee. The former is responsible for or- ganizing educational events and seminars that provide information and experience for young lawyers. The Public Education Committee focuses on educational events di- rected towards the non-legal com- munity - hosting a 6-8 week mock trial program in the fall and a Law Day activities in the spring. The Mentoring Committee is a recently created special committee that fo- cuses on developing and sustain- ing positive connections between young lawyers and more experi- enced mentors. The Public Service Committee is a good option for lawyers who are looking to work with their peers to volunteer and serve the local Baltimore community. In addition to organizing the annual Holiday Party for Children Living in Shelters, this committee puts on regular charitable community service events, including my per- sonal favorite, making dinner for families of long term care patients at the Johns Hopkins Believe in Tomorrow Children’s House. What if you are interested in many different committees? My advice to young lawyers looking to get involved in the YLD, is to at- tend several different committee meetings and events early in the year to try to get a feel for what suits you best. The annual Meet & Greet with YLD Committee Chairs in August/September is a great event that provides members an opportunity to meet the YLD di- vision council and committee chairs, and to learn more about the various committees and how to get involved. If you are a law student that is interested in jump starting your involvement with the BABC and YLD, you are in luck. All law students at ABA accredited law schools are eligible for free mem- bership in the BABC and YLD. This offers a wonderful (and did I mention free) opportunity to come to bar events, establish some con- nections, and learn about the Bal- timore legal community, all within a stones throw from your school. Young Lawyers’ Division Update Finding your place in the YLD It’s not a secret that the BABC gives a lot to its members and the community. It is a vibrant bar association that de- livers dozens of CLEs to its members, while developing and support- ing many public service projects. The work of this association is truly in line with its purpose which is clearly eluci- dated in our Mission Statement which states: The Bar Associa- tion of Baltimore City is an organiza- tion of legal professionals committed to providing quality legal education, advocacy, and services to its members; promoting professionalism, equality and diversity among its members; fos- tering collegiality; advancing the public image of the profession and providing law-related services and education to the public; and exercising leadership on a local, state, and national level to advance these goals. This year, we will fulfill our mission to provide law-related services and ed- ucation to the public through multiple outreach efforts and pro-bono services. There will be creative opportunities for new and seasoned attorneys to give back through participation in many pro bono projects and clinics. In addition, we will continue to offer our own quality educa- tion to our members through CLEs, as well as occasionally partner with other or- ganizations. Most recently, The Business Law Committee (chaired by Nicholas C. Stewart of Saul Ewing Arnstein and Lehr, LLP) held a CLE, “Cannabis in Maryland and Beyond: Lessons Learned & What Lies Ahead.” The program explored the issues developing around regulations, and how Maryland will navigate its medical can- nabis program, “while understanding the impact of the passage of the recent 2018 Farm Bill.” I’m sure the attendees found the program and subject matter fascinat- ing and appreciated Jonathan Havens’ perspective and knowledge of the roles that government agencies play in regulat- ing cannabis, as well as which trends to watch. Unfortunately, many attorneys who have little time to think, yet alone put one more thing on their personal calen- dars. To you I say, “don’t fret”. There are alternative ways to support our mission statement. The Bar Association of Balti- more City is offering every member the opportunity to become a Sustaining Mem- ber. Some of you have already seen the flyer to introduce this value in your dues notice. Sustaining Membership provides an opportunity for BABC members to support the dynamic programming and growth of this association by paying an additional $175 above the regular dues amount. The benefits of becoming a Sus- taining Member include recognition in BABC print and electronic publications, a new lapel pin acknowledging Sustaining Member status; and recognition during major BABC functions. Another way that members can sup- port our community is by supporting the Baltimore Bar Foundation, Inc. The Bal- timore Bar Foundation is the charitable arm of BABC. Since it was founded in 1970, The Baltimore Bar Foundation has financially supported several organiza- tions, including: Advocates for Children and Youth, Baltimore Neighborhoods, Inc, Homeless Persons Representation Project, Maryland Access to Justice Com- mission, Maryland Legal Aid, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, Pro Bono Resource Center, Senior Legal Services, St. Ambrose Housing Center, St. Francis Neighborhood Center, and the UMBC Moot Court Program. Finally, if you cannot squeeze another hour or two out of your calendar or an- other dollar from your wallet, consider joining a BABC committee. Most of the committees meet during lunch, and host CLEs in downtown Baltimore so that they are convenient for our members. Work- ing on a committee is a good way to sup- port the mission of BABC, while meeting new people and learning more about the legal profession. In fact, I have asked nearly every committee chair to think of how its members can contribute to access to justice, and I am excited about the ideas that are circulating. While this article highlights a few ways to support BABC and its mission, it is by no means an exhaustive list of everything that is happening in this bar association. If you are having trouble keeping track of upcoming events, then I encourage every member to take a few minutes to read the BABC Weekly Bar Review. You will see everything that BABC has to offer and that we have fun fulfilling our mission. The President’s Message: In accordance with our mission ... Ethics Hotline Volunteer John Prisbe: 410-244-7400 Speaking of law students, this month I turn my attention to one of the YLD’s newer members, Jacob Dorfman.
