This week the Pippi children will celebrate their Winter Festival with a puppet show and a lantern walk Festivals in Early Childhood are always a privilege to be part of and witness as we have opportunity to clearly see and experience the young childrsquos natural and innate capacity for reverence and wonder Festivals take a significant amount of work from staff and I would like to take a moment to thank all my colleagues for their investment in bringing to life such wonderful moments in the childrenrsquos year

Preparations are also well underway for the Primary and Middle School winter festival I have heard it said that the winter festival is a celebration of the miracle of light and in many ways it is But the light doesnrsquot exist without the darkness and so

really our festival acknowledges the interplay and relationship between the light and the dark and what that means for the human being

We canrsquot celebrate the miracle of light without acknowledging the opportunities of darkness We celebrate our Winter Festival at the time of the year when the darkness holds sway in the dance and yet this is the time of the year when the inner light that lives within us as human beings has the most wish and will to shine out into the world

All life in the natural world is in some way oriented towards and directed by the sun From the flowers that open and close in the mornings and evenings or turn their faces through the day to catch as many of the sunrsquos rays as possible to the reptiles that withdraw from the world when the sun does and the bees who share with one another through dance where to find food in relation to the sunrsquos movement ndash all of their lives are inextricably bound to the outer light of the world For the human being it is different The path of our lives can unfold completely independently of the rhythms of the sun we must find our own direction guided by an inner not an outer light In winterrsquos darkness we can create an inner sun that will imbue our deeds in the world with wisdom and light

Ancient Persia was the focus of our first Main Lesson The stories of Zarathustra in a land of contrasts featured in our writing and illustrated books We have complemented this with some cooking classes in which we are exploring different types of recipes including Indian dishes

Our cooking skills were put to the test at our pancake and lemonade stall at the fair The children worked very responsibly to run a successful stall Thank you to all our class parents for your support in achieving this

The financial operations and budget for the stall were thoroughly planned in our Business Math Main Lesson We explored profit and loss scenarios and estimated quantities in ordering our ingredients Overall we did make a profit to contribute to the development of the school Well done all

We are currently enjoying an exploration of ancient Egyptian history and preparing for the Winter Festival

Emma amp Jenny ndash Class 78 This term the students of class 7 and 8 have begun a Chemistry Main Lesson with Jenny Agius It has been a very exciting and experiential so far with lots of fire and burning questions being answered

A study of chemistry leads us towards fundamental questions about the relationship between our selves (our inner world) and the outer world What are our connections to the world and how can we understand these connections

Through studying a science such as chemistry students develop confidence in their ability to understand how substances and associated technology surround them and form part of their experience as a modern human being
