NOTE FROM THE EDITORby Lisa Wilson

Will We Do It This Year?

Each year we do it to ourselves. We make goals and write down a list of what we want to accomplish in the next year. Many call it their “New Years Resolutions.” Yet let’s be completely honest, what makes this year so different in our call to change than last years? And the moment we don’t do something specific on our list, we get all flustered and want to quit altogether. We think too much about the future, our long-term goals. And I want to tell you that in order to meet your long-term goals, short-term goals need to be signed, sealed and delivered. I believe short-term goals are what make long-term goals reached. If you bought a new instrument to learn for the New Year and can’t play one song, I must tell you, don’t you dare send that instrument back. Not just yet. See we have been taught we must crawl before we are able to walk. Yet, some-how we’ve come far from that idea and the hard work that we MUST go through seems undesirable. Yet what people don’t know is how beautiful being at the bottom looks. See each and every one of us has a story to tell. And what makes it so beautiful is that it’s your own. Only you know the endless nights that it took to write your first novel. Or the bleeding fingers that left scars as you first tried learning how to play the guitar. Yet the story is only complete when you finish the task set out before you. See, when you get to the other side of the mountain, when you jump over the hurdles and get past the obstacles you face, there is always something waiting for you. That something is called “success.” So my advice to you so you can reach that level is to take it slow. Take the short goal route. Trying to achieve weekly goals or even daily goals will give you a much more success track record than long-term goals. Going back to the instrument, instead of having the long-term goal of “I’m going to play the guitar this year,” why not use practical steps in getting there? Perhaps learning two chords a week may just be the trick for you. Why not make one goal for your New Year’s resolutions this time around. That one goal is, changing your mindset on how you view your goals.

DARLA BEAUX

Going Against The Normby Michelle Tuyub

Going against the norm is something that artist Darla Beaux believes. Possessing a voice beyond her years, Darla has been singing since the age of 10. Darla’s genre of music is alterna-tive pop and she has a sultry vocal style. She draws influence from artists like Amy Wine-house, Aretha Franklin, Gwen Stefani and Adele. Darla stays on track with her music by focusing on challenging herself and not on what other artists are doing.

Darla’s new EP “Rebel Soul” will be released in February and can be bought on ITunes. Dar-la’s future goals include working on her guitar skills and incorporating it in her music. It can seem that the sky is the limit for this young artist who is only 14 years old. Be sure to follow her through her journey. Check out what she had to tell Young Celebrity News about her music!

What was the first song you remember singing as a child? The first song that I ever remember and remember singing was Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds”. My mom loved Reggae music and it was always playing in our house. That song is the one I liked the most (because of the little birds).

What are some obstacles you’ve faced while being a young pop singer?Sometimes people think that I’m older than I am because of my voice and because I don’t look fourteen. That can be a challenge in certain situations. One time I sang in a venue, where they had to bring me in the back door, put me on stage to sing and then I had to immediately leave out the back door behind the stage. I was to young to be in the club where they had booked me to perform.

With so many young artists today rising in the pop music world do you feel like you have to out sing your competition? No, not really, I just do my own thing. If I like it and it feels good, that’s what I do. I really don’t have the time or the energy to focus on what other people are doing, so honestly, I just don’t think about it.

What will be different about 2013 vs 2012 for you?I’m really excited about 2013 because my new EP “Rebel Soul” will be released. I have a great producer and a great team behind me. I am so proud of everything that we have created, everyone is gonna love it!

Continued...How do stay focused on who you are as an artist versus trying to compete with other talent?I really don’t try to compete with anyone, if you focus on other people and what they are doing, you lose track of who you are. I’m more into challenging myself, always trying to do something better than I did before.

Do you have a favorite quote that helps pick you up when you’re feeling down?“If someone told you right now, that you could do anything and not fail. What would you do? - So do it!”

Are you working on any new projects for the new year?I’m really working on my guitar skills, so that I can do some live acoustic versions of my new songs this year. I’m trying to play and sing at the same time (which can be a little hard for me, my brain doesn’t always cooperate)

What advice can you give to up and coming young artists today wanting to pursue a career in music?Sometimes you have to go against the norm. To find out who you are and what works for you. Not just what’s the popular thing to do (that’s in everything, not just music). Don’t be a copy of someone else, be an original of yourself.

A’LONNA BEYOND

It’s Her Time by Lisa Wilson

Legendary producer Timbaland is key to working with some of the best artists in the music industry. This time he has crafted another hit but for someone you don’t quite know yet. However, having the track record like Timbaland has, you already have a clue that this artist must be extremely talented. Oh believe us, she is! This teen artist is named A’lonna.

We all remember the last young female artist that Timbaland blessed his talents with, Aaliyah, and A’lonna is working hard to leave a long lasting impression in the music scene as well. Her new single which can be found on iTunes, “Don’t take it personal,” has many people wanting more from this young artist. Check out what she had to tell Young Celebrity News below.

When did you start singing?“Wow, I started early, I think I was like 4 when I started singing and I remember writing my first song when I turned 5. I think that’s when I realized I had a thing for music. I also joined my church’s choir around that age and that gave me the chance to sing publicly in front of a live audience, I fell in love with it!”

Who was the first one that recognized your talent?“Hmm, I would say my mother was the first to see that spark in me. I always loved to sing and dance for fun but I think my mother looked at me and saw something different. She saw that I actually had a gift to do it. She told me that as a little girl I always had a lot of rhythm, it wasn’t until later that she noticed some of my other talents like playing the piano, acting and modeling.”

Who are some of your influences today?“I loveee Aaliyah! She is one of my main influences along with Mya, Missy Elliot, Brandy and TLC. I look up to them so much! They’re the type of artists that young girls can look up to and want to be like and I want to be a role model for young girls too. They have amazing songs and a unique look to match their sound. They’re creative and daring and I definitely relate to that. It’s dope cus’ I’m all about newness, whether it’s my look or my sound I wanna bring realness to the music industry. I really wanna show girls they can be confident, hot and classy all at the same time.”

How do you want to be remembered in the music industry?“I want to be remembered as a star and a true talent. I hope to one day become my generations next young-pop icon. I wanna push pop culture forward with my music and with my message. I wanna be a positive influence, like a breath of fresh air for people who hear my music or anyone I meet. I wanna leave my mark on the industry and help pioneer a change that’ll revolutionize RnB. It seems like music needs to move into a new phase, I think it’s kind of all starting to sound the same. I want to offer an alternative, spice up radio, break up the repetitiveness and change up the tempo. I wanna share what’s in my heart and harmonize humanity with the gift God gave me.”

Tell us about your new single “Don’t Take It Personal”, and having Timbaland on the production side of your song?“Well, ‘Don’t Take It Personal’ is my brand new single I just realeased, it’s produced by Timbaland. It’s a super hot song that people can relate and dance to. When the track was brought to me I was so excited to write to it because Timbaland is my favorite producer of all time! I knew the record would come out crazy dope and it did! I’ve been gettin’ really great feedback about it!”

Are you working on any upcoming projects for the New Year?“Yes, I’m working on my first album right now with Micheal “Indian” Marcey who is the owner of Crown Kid Entertainment the label I’m signed to. Indian and his team of producers and musicians created a new artistic sound of RnB that’s gonna change the game, I think people are really gonna like it. We’re pushing the envelope to a new level, creating a sound people can really vibe to. I’m often told that I’m bringin’ back real RnB music that reminiscent of that 90’s feel but with my own 2013 twist. I’m putting my heart into every record, I write from a lot of personal expe-riences so you’ll definitely get to know the real A’Lonna. If you go to Twitter or Facebook.com/ALONNABEYOND you can stay updated with everything I put out.”

What motivates you as an artist?“Being able to do what I love everyday is what motivates me as an artist the most.

Knowing that I can contribute to pop culture and create a legacy that people can follow. I get motivated when I think of what the industry will be like once I’m actively apart of it and my music is being received well on a grander scale by millions. The thought of being a role model is very inspiring for me too. I know in my heart that one day my gift will put me in a position to help others to make their dreams come true as well and that gives me the drive to keep going.”

What advice do you have for other young aspiring artists today?“You can make it if you always believe in yourself. Never give up on your passion and never lose sight of what separates you as an artist from everyone else. Don’t always try to compete or compare, just be the best at being you, no one can do YOU better than YOU can! Turn every weakness into a weapon that’s gonna make you better, don’t hold back and always let your light shine.”

KOLTON STEWART

For The Love Of Music

by Michelle Tuyub

Some people are just born to do music. This could be said about Kolton Stewart who started doing music at a very young age. Drawing inspiration from artists like Elton John and Ray Charles, Kolton is on his way to becoming a legend in music. While in school, Kolton ventured into other activities that grabbed his interest like playing football and hockey. Yet an injury at age 8 in football had Kolton returning to the stage life and performing, his true calling. At age 10, he auditioned for Lion King and was casted as Young Simba. Kolton has many facets to his talents. You could say he’s a quadruple threat! Along with making music he can dance, act and is an athlete. Check out what he had to tell us about his plans for the New Year!

When did you first get into singing? My whole life I have been singing and playing music, but I didn’t know I really wanted to pursue this as a career until I auditioned and landed the role of Young Simba in Lion King – North American Tour. I spent a year on tour with some amazing professionals and that was when I really knew this is what I wanted to for the rest of my life. Plus I loved being on tour and hope I get to tour again one day with my music. A lot of talented artists are coming out of Canada like Justin, Drake, Carly Rae. Do you feel like this increases your chances in making big in the industry? Even if Justin, Drake and Carly were from the United States they would still be where they are now simply because they are so talented. I don’t think it will help my chances because I’m Canadian, but it’s a good confidence builder because in a way I know that if they can pursue their dreams and be totally successful worldwide maybe I can too.

Who are some of your influences today? When I was about 3 years old I started listening to Ray Charles, The Monkees, and I was a huge fan of Lawrence Welk and the Wiggles too.

Every Sunday I would watch Lawrence Welk and conduct alongside him. So I was listening to serious jazz, blues, rock and pop on a daily basis. My influences today are Justin Bieber, Jason Mraz, Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson, Prince, Taylor Swift, Carly Rae, Usher, Drake and Ed Sheeran. Are you working on an album for the New Year? I am definitely working on some music, but right now I am working on covers and a couple of original songs that I’m going to have out in 2013.

What musical goals do you have for this New Year? I want 2013 to be my most successful year yet and hope that my music takes me to new places – including moving to the United States. I would love that!

Who is your biggest supporter today? When I was little, I had a lot of supporters – professional musicians that saw something in me and then for no rea-son at all they would let me join them on stage

or spend time with me showing me rhythms and learning songs. Some even took a collection when I was 8 years old to help pay for drum lessons for me. Today my supporters continue to be professionals in the industry as well as my fans. I’m really blessed to have supporters like this and especially love my fans from twitter because I am meeting people from all around the world that support me. I never knew that was possible and feel really blessed. My mom (of course) supports me 100% of the time because she knew even when I was little that I was obsessed with music – plus she never complains about the noise in the house! Top favorites:1. Favorite Restaurant: I love all kinds of food really but one favorite place is I Chipotle2. Favorite Movie: Skyfall3. Favorite song of 2012: 2012 was an amazing year for music! Just look at the AMA’s this year! So I don’t think I can specifically say there is one favorite of mine because it was a whole pile of great artists that delivered some seriously amazing stuff – Boyfriend, Beauty and the Beat, The A Team, Gangham Style, Call Me Maybe, Locked Out of Heaven What advice can you share with other young artists who want to pursue a career in music? Most kids who are my age already know inside that this is what they want to do because they have most likely been doing it one way or the other their entire life. But for me the best advice I ever got was to keep playing and practicing every day and don’t give up on your dream. Also know that sometimes you are going to get made fun of because you are an artist – but you have to let that go and be who you really want to be. Just don’t give up on your dream – ever.

EDIDION

Ready For Changeby Lisa Wilson

R&B artist Edidion is ready for change when it comes to the music industry and he believes he is the right man for the job. He has the ability to create his own music, which gives him an extra boost when it comes to other artists today. His new up-tempo single, “Put In That Work,” can be bought on various online stores including Amazon and ITunes. Much is to be said about this up and coming superstar. He has already been featured in various blogs and magazines which is highly impressive for an independent artist. Check out his interview and see what he had to say about his music!

When did you first get into music?I officially started making music a year and a half ago. I have always loved music since I was a little boy so the love was always there. I always knew I wanted to be a musician but I didn’t know how I was going to get my foot in the door or where to start. It was through a spontaneous conversation on the phone with a friend that I should do a remix to a current song. I did the remix and people loved it they want-ed more so the rest was history.

How do you go about choosing the beats for specific songs? When I’m picking out beats, I simply listen to random pop/r&b/electronic beats and whatever instrumental speaks to my soul and I can hear my voice over I choose that. I like to choose production that is unique and go a little left. My overall theme as an artist is being different and not doing what everyone expects. My voice is unique so I like a beat that compliments my voice as well as my voice compliment-ing the beat.

What motivates you to write a song? Do you ever get writ-er’s block?Oh my god yes! I get writers block a lot but not as much as before. I’m not a trained songwriter; I simply study great songs and draw inspiration from talented songwriters which help me develop my craft. I get over writers block by simply taking a break from my writing session, I may walk around for a little while, repeat the sentence that I’m trying to finish over and over again until something intelligent hits my brain !. When I had severe writers block to the point where I felt like my brain was empty I just didn’t write, I wasn’t going to force myself to write a song because I knew the song would not turn out great. All songwriters should not be afraid of writers block, just take a break and allow your creativity and passion to re-generate. A song is like a story to me and it has to relate to everyone so I’m always thinking of the listeners when I’m writing a song. I try my best to make sense and tell an honest story. The motivation behind my writing is that, nobody is going to write these songs for me! So I have to pick up that pen and tell an in-credible story and sing it to the world.

How do you plan to make a difference in the music industry today?I feel like I have a lot to bring to the table. I feel like the industry has not had an artist or personality like me yet. Musically I’m not afraid to be emotional or sensitive in my songs and as a male in R&B that’s often frowned upon and not exactly commercial. I can cover all aspects of R&B of course but when it’s time to get emotional, speak to the heart and stand up for myself I’m not afraid to do it. The stereotypes of men are flawed and I’m going to sing about our sides of the story. I didn’t have the best childhood so I definitely have a story to tell and I think I represent a different type of “Man”. If you look at female artists they represent the different types of females we all come across. We all know a “Diva” a “Miss Independent” and the “Gangsta” type girls. And you see those person-alities in some of the female artist’s personas in music today. In the male R&B world you have the “freaks”, “playas”, “passionate” and “club-hopper” types and I think I represent the “understanding, mysterious and fun” type of man. Of course with all the other great aspects of a man combined but I definitely see myself as a new and unique addition to R&B aswell as the industry. I’m an adaptable artist you can’t put me in one box.

What has been your favorite song you’ve written and why?My favorite song that I have written to date has to be “Audemars & Diamonds” I’m also proud of my upcom-ing single “Put In That Work” which will be released online Jan 8th, but “Audemars & Diamonds” has to be my most lyrical and honest song to date. That song speaks about a relationship where the faithful and in-love man gave his all to his girlfriend; I’m talking financially and emotionally. Sometimes in a relationship one may take advantage of a person’s good nature, pick them up and drop them. The song speaks about a man who was dumped and the girl spreads rumours saying that the man didn’t treat her right and he was good-for-nothing when in fact he was everything a girl dreams of in a man. The imagery of Karma is also sharp in the lyrics; I also sung the song in a very emotional and hurt tone so the listeners can really capture the feel of the song. The song is a low-key male-empowerment song, the production is also street yet smooth; it’s a song that guys can definitely play in their radio and cars without feeling a type of way!

I hope men and women can relate to this song and use it to help them get over a bad breakup.

Who are some of your influences today? My influences are Pharrell Williams, Aaliyah, Usher, Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson. I have looked up to them for several years I also grew up on their music. They are all unique, talented and incredible entertainers who have left an imprint on music that you will always see and hear. That is what I would like to be able to do one day, leave my mark just like they did and create timeless music.

What’s the best advice you’ve gotten so far while pursu-ing a career in music?I have gotten a lot of advice but when complied all together it’s to remain humble, never be afraid of hardwork, keep god first, believe in yourself, Dare to be different and develop your brand.

What advice can you give to aspiring artists today? My advice would be to work hard, believe in your art, don’t follow but lead and always challenge yourself.

MY FRIEND THE HIPSTER

“I’m Growling for The Growlers”by Rikki Gonzalez

So lets talk about one of my favorite bands that has had a lot of buzz for the past few years… The Growlers! Fans have been trying to wait patiently for the arrival of there third album titled “Hung at Heart”, set to hit iTunes January 22, 2013. We are all curious to see how the sound will change with Dan Auerbach, lead singer of The Black Keys, overseeing their latest album. Auerbach had them record some of the album in his Ohio recording studio. It’s unknown when Auerbach took a liking to the Growlers but they did open for The Black Keys back at the Hollywood Palladium back in September 2010. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE!

This is my friend Rikki Gonzalez. She will be writing some articles for me from time to time. We recognized that there was an audience for people who want to know about different genres, especially the sounds that could not be placed in one. She likes the unknown bands so that she can enjoy cheaper tickets and smaller crowds. Her interests include: folk, indie, rock, and a mix of the rest. She is 25 years old and has a unique ear for music and loves to take pictures of the shows she encounters. Lets she what she is excited about next!

Many words have been used to describe the many sounds of “The Growlers,” but as they have said themselves by calling their two day madness, “Beach Goth Party,” that was held at the Santa Ana Observatory in October of last year. The Growlers did play new tunes and did not disappoint with their stage décor. Brooks Neilson, lead singer, was last to enter on the stage with his flamboyant garb, facemask and face paint. Confetti fell onto the hip-swaying crowd as Neilson’s distinct voice started singing the words to “Hashima.” The night did not did not disappoint. The new songs had a sweet serenade, like drinking a Mai Tai underneath the palms. Well guys until next time!

IM5

Great Chemistry Produces Great Resultsby Lisa Wilson

With a demand for young talented bands, IM5 is making its way to center stage. Cole, Dalton, Dana, Gabe and Will bring out a variety with their sound. You may see them dancing to their up-tempo songs, or slowing it down in an acoustic setting with Dalton playing guitar. Yet either way, you’ll never be disappointed hearing these young guys perform.

With any great dynamic team, there’s always that chemistry and glue that holds them together. Which is why, this dynamic group is going to break charts when the radio gets a whole of their records. The bond that they hold clearly is shown in their talent. And when not doing music, these young guys are having fun with one another. Young Celebrity News can’t wait to see what they do in the future. We were able to talk to these young guys about their music and more, check it out below.

How did this band come together? There was big audition put together by Simon Fuller, Jamie King and Perez Hilton from all around the country, they took video submissions as well. And we’re just lucky to have been the chosen five.

How was it like performing for the Jackson? Did they give you any advice?CRAZY, “cray cray.” They’re legends! They are the original boy bands, the fact that we’re an up and coming boy band, it was surreal. We sang a Michael Jackson song, and we were like we can’t mess up! We actually made a relationship with them! We talked to Jackie a lot and he’s very supportive. One of our bosses Jamie has worked with them before so it’s cool to have that relationship with Superstars. (Laughs)

When can we expect an album for you guys? This year 2013! We’re looking to come out with an EP first then album later in the year.

2012 was really promising for you guys what can we expect for 2013?BIGGER BETTER THINGS!

What’s the most useful advice you would give to someone who wanted to be in a music scene?Dana: When ur not practicing someone is.Cole: Always have a good outlook and positive attitude.
