YOUNG BAND PROGRAM NOTES It is safe to say that Grofé’s iconic work from the early 1930s remains his most recognized and programmed creation to this day. A master of instrumental color and texture, he is also credited with the brilliant orchestration of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” along with many popular standards and tunes from Broadway musicals of the time. For more than a decade, Grofé was the principal arranger for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. Themes from four of the five program-based movements of Grand Canyon Suite are included in this arrangement for younger players (in order of appearance): “Sunrise,” “On the Trail” (the most often-heard excerpt), “Sunset,” and “Cloudburst.” Although carefully written within the parameters of this level, audiences are nonetheless assured to experience the freshness, the richness, and the excitement of the original score. NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR This arrangement presents some nice confidence-building sections in addition to material that will definitely stretch and grow technique with players. Dynamic markings have been meticulously indicated, as have tempo indications and strategic places for taking breaths in all parts. In the “On the Trail“ section, beginning at measure 51, light tonguing in the accompanying eighth notes is crucial so as not to overpower the melody. It is safe to say that Grofé’s iconic work from the early 1930s remains his most recognized and programmed creation to this day. A master of instrumental color and texture, he is also credited with the brilliant orchestration of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” along with many popular standards and tunes from Broadway musicals of the time. For more than a decade, Grofé was the principal arranger for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra.
