Young Audiences of Indiana is now doing business as Arts for Learning, The Indiana Affili-ate of Young Audiences. Why did we decide to change our name after 50 years? We think Arts for Learning better reflects that the arts are an integral part of education and creativity. From in-depth artist residencies to individual workshops, large group performances and teacher professional development workshops, Arts for Learning programs connect arts to education. For example, last year Arts for Learning developed a digital game residency which integrates traditional arts with digital gaming and environmental science. During the residency, children shift their experience from consumer to creator, learning about video game development and all the skills necessary for the process. As the students learn about game development, they create ideas for the game’s environmental content, posing a central problem to solve such as clean water and recycling. Students also engage in a variety of art forms which may include street art, puppetry, creative movement and digital 3-D art. Arts for Learning programs consist of four core elements to assure meaningful education: students and teachers experience high quality artistry, create original works, understand new concepts about the art form, and connect the creative experience with the curriculum or life skills for a better understanding of both. Your support has made it possible for us to reach 121,583 children with meaningful arts in education experiences. Thank you,

Through a grant from PNC's ‘Growing Up Great’ program, Arts for Learning provided arts programs to fourteen child care centers in Marion Co. reaching 1,224 young children and their teachers. These programs consisted of performances and workshops in dance, music, theater and visual arts delivered by professional teaching artists specifically trained in early learning. Volunteers from PNC and Arts for Learning also visited select preschool centers throughout the week to read stories. Volunteers presented each center with a large set of new books for their classroom library.

The centers also received PNC's Green & Growing Kits containing Sesame Street books and supplies with a healthy environment theme. The Week of the Young Child was sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world's largest early childhood education association, for the purpose of focusing public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. Arts for Learning would like to extend a ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped make this week a success.

Purple Dinosaur Games’ “The Bus Driver” is a video game created by none other than four 13 and 14-year olds from Triton Middle School in Shelbyville under the direction of street artist Holly Combs, Adzooks puppeteers David Wright and Robin Holm, and video game designer Jason Guy. “The Bus Driver” digital game concept won the highest ranking in the class for the storyline, pitch, characters, plot, and puppets.

This pilot residency was so successful that it has led to the creation of two new digital game residencies launching this year, funded through the generosity of the National Endowment for the Arts , the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust and the Season for Sharing Fund.
