As an upstream oil and gas technician, you’ll be maintaining vital installations, helping to underpin global economies. You’ll be part of an industry across the world. Oil and gas are vital to the economy in the UK, providing energy and essential chemicals that power our lives. Not only that, the work you do will impact on other people’s jobs too. Over 380,000 people are employed in the oil and gas industry, and their livelihoods will depend on the work you do. You’ll be well rewarded for your hard work As an upstream oil and gas technician, you’ll operate and maintain production systems and be responsible for their safe and efficient running. You have to be extremely competent at every level, understanding not just how a piece of equipment works, but how it affects everything else on site. You’ll be an instinctive troubleshooter with good diagnostic skills. Technicians have to be methodical, able to plan work carefully, communicate effectively with colleagues and use information systems to access data and record what’s happening. And of course, you’ll often be working either at an onshore terminal or offshore – typically on a rota of two weeks at work, followed by two or three weeks leave. It’s a different, challenging lifestyle, but the rewards are well worth it. A choice of career paths

As an upstream oil and gas technician you can besure of a varied career. There are four paths you canchoose from:

Instrument and Control MaintenanceYou’ll regulate and maintain measurement systems for oiland gas flow, level, pressure and temperature. You’ll alsobe responsible for electronic and pneumatic processcontrol systems and safety systems.

Mechanical MaintenanceYou’ll look after valves, pumps and transmission systems.You’ll also be responsible for prime mover machinery suchas high capacity diesel engines and gas turbines.

Electrical MaintenanceYou’ll be looking after high voltage power generation anddistribution systems, as well as motors, control systemsand electrical equipment specially designed for use indemanding offshore environments.

Process OperationYou’ll start up, control, monitor and shut down oil and gasproduction process, both manually and usingcomputerised distribution control systems. You will beresponsible for maintaining safe operations and achievingproduction targets.

You’ll be helping to build the future

Structures like oil rigs and production platforms;high-tech oil refineries and twenty-first centurychemical plants can only be built and maintainedthanks to an incredible amount of expertise, skill andteamwork. By choosing a career in the oil and gasindustry, you will be part of the team that builds andoperates structures like these.

Are you eligible for the Upstream Oil and GasTechnician Training?

Training is open to any well-motivated person fromany background who can fulfil the criteria below.

Applicants from Scotland should hold:National 5 grades (or equivalent i.e., minimum Standard Grade atCredit level) in :MathematicsEnglishEither Physics, Chemistry or Engineering SciencePlus one other subjectOrMathematics at Higher Grade C or aboveEnglish at National 5 gradePlus two other subjects at National 5 grade(or equivalent i.e., minimum Standard Grade at Credit level)
