Youden Award in Interlaboratory Testing for 1991 by the American Statistical Association for his paper “A Minimax Approach to Combining Means, with Practical Examples” which appeared in C~mon~etri~ and Intelligent Laboratory Systems, 5 (1989) 129-148. The Award, consisting of a citation and US$ 1000 split evenly among the authors, was presented at the Presidential Address Session during the An- nual Meeting of the American Statistical Association in Atlanta, Georgia, on August 20, 1991 in the Imperial Ballroom of the Marriott Hotel, where the Meet- ing was held. A database of species, associated reactions, and thermodynamic equilibrium constants is included, along with a graphics utility. Equilibrium problems are solved rigorously, with inclusion of activity effects, with a slow but accurate combina- tion of algorithms. Equilibrium relationships are solved - trans- parently to the user - using a combination of a recursive succes- sive approximation algorithm and a nonlinear equation solver. The program uses an ap- parently correct but slow method for solving equilibrium problems. A nswers given for all test cases appear to be correct.
