Noosa Smiddy Cycle combines four days of exhilarating cycling through the picturesque Sunshine Coast Hinterland with opportunities to develop long-lasting relationships with like-minded professionals.

Underpinning this event is the desire not only to conquer the heights of the Hinterland but to fight cancer— with all proceeds from the event funding research into ovarian cancer.

In the two years since its inception participants in the Noosa Smiddy Cycle have already raised over $180 000 for cancer research.

By joining the Noosa Smiddy Cycle team you will be making a significant contribution toward research into this devastating disease while making some great new mates along the way.

This unique event will provide you with an opportunity for meaningful networking, developing new friendships and having some laughs as you thrash it out, side-by-side, in the saddle.

You’re invited to an exclusive four day cycling event hosted by Mater Foundation’s Smiling for Smiddy. Aussie cycling legend Phil Anderson will again

ride in the Smiddy peloton in 2015. As the first non-European to wear the ‘maillot jaune’ (Yellow Jersey) in the Tour de France, Phil paved the way for Australian cyclists in Europe.

He then went on to don the Yellow Jersey another ten times before rising to number one in the world. Phil is regarded as one of Australia’s cycling heroes. By joining the Noosa Smiddy Cycle team you’ll have the opportunity to ride alongside him and share some stories in the saddle.

“I have been part of the Smiling for Smiddy and Mater family since 2009 and I can tell you for a fact that Smiddy events bring out the best in everyone involved — riders, road crew, local communities and of course donors, loved ones and supporters.

“I put this ride into my diary every year because I love the camaraderie, mateship and laughs we have —the ‘Smiddy spirit’ that you will hear a lot about—not to mention the challenge involved in any Smiddy event.

“But the major plus for me is why we get together in the first place and knowing the money we raise on these rides is funding world-class research projects to fight cancer, a disease which has impacted all of us.”

– Phil Anderson

DAY 1 Thursday 23 April Brisbane – Noosa (160 kms)

Departing Brisbane at 6 am, we cycle north to Noosa. We’ll get to know our fellow riders along the way, swapping some stories in the saddle while we take in the sea air during our final leg alongside the Pacific Ocean.

Arriving mid-afternoon at our 5 star accommodation—RACV Noosa Resort—we’ll have time to settle in and enjoy a relaxing swim before reconvening for our Welcome Dinner on site at 6.30 pm.

DAY 2 Friday 24 April Noosa – Gympie Return (140 kms)

Rolling out at 6.30pm we’ll get the heart rate up and the legs pumping with a timed ascent of the famed Noosa hill. There’ll be some friendly banter amongst new friends as we compete for King and Queen of the mountain honours.

Afterwards we’ll soak in the lush green landscape surrounding Kin Kin and Pomona as the road rolls its way through Gympie, before heading back to the coast in the early afternoon.

This afternoon there’s time to revitalise tired muscles with a therapeutic massage on-site or wind down with some pre-dinner drinks at the laid-back Resort Bar, before we enjoy a team dinner at the iconic Noosa Surf Club at 6 pm.

Itinerary

DAY 3 Saturday 25 April Noosa – Montville Return (140 kms)

Today it’s all about mateship and a helping hand on the back as we support each other to take on the hills on our way to Montville.

Leaving the resort at 5.45am we will observe a special ANZAC Day service in Mapleton before enjoying one of the best descents on the coast.

Arriving back at the resort mid-afternoon, there’ll be enough time to soak our legs in the heated lagoon pool before the highlight of our program—a special dinner hosted by keynote speaker Phil Anderson.

DAY 4 Sunday 26 April Noosa (110 km loop)

Our last day sees us hitting the road at 7am for a final loop around Noosa—taking in the best roads from Noosa to Eumundi and around the Northern end of the Sunshine Coast while soaking up spectacular ocean vistas.

We will return to the resort in the early afternoon for a final celebratory team lunch by the pool.

Money raised by the Noosa Smiddy Cycle team will directly fund ovarian cancer research efforts led by Mater senior researcher and medical oncologist Dr Jim Coward. Jim will be able to share some of the amazing outcomes of his research as he rides alongside you as part of our peloton.

Why ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer affects 1300 women each year and tragically most of these women will die from the disease. The only way we can change this statistic is through research. *

On registration you acknowledge your commitment to changing the odds for the women in your life, by raising $2000** in the lead up to this event.

Smiling for Smiddy will help you along the way, providing expert advice to help you achieve your goal. Our team has helped thousands of cyclists reach their goals in recent years. We know what works and we’ll share this knowledge with you.

Your participation in the Noosa Smiddy Cycle will help to create a brighter future for the women in your life; be it your wife, your mother, your sister or your daughter.
