Divine Service – 6:30 PM

March 4, 2015 Third Wednesday in Lent

Welcome to Peace! – The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone.

Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord this evening, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer:

Prayer of the Day Almighty God, you see that we have no power to defend ourselves. Guard and keep us both outwardly and inwardly from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

For the Children A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the left as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service.

Facilities Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side.

The Divine Service: Vespers, p. 120

The Confession of Sin

P: Dearly beloved! We have come together in the presence of God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at His hand, to set forth His most worthy praise, to hear His holy Word, and to ask for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and salvation. O come, let us worship Him! Let us kneel and bow down before Him. Let us confess our sins with penitent hearts, and obtain forgiveness by His infinite grace and mercy.

C: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed the devices and desires of our hearts. We have offended against Your holy law. We have done those things which we should not have done, and we have not done those things which we should have done. Have mercy on us, O Lord! Spare us and restore us, according to the promises You have declared to us in Jesus Christ, our Lord. For His sake grant that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of Your holy name.

P: The almighty and merciful Lord has granted us pardon and forgiveness of all our sins, grace for true repentance and amendment of life, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn #300, “Sweet the Moments, Rich in Blessing”

The Versicles P: O Lord, open my lips.

4

P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me.

The Psalmody – Psalm 73

P: Surely God is good to Israel,

C: to those who are pure in heart.

P: But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;

C: I had nearly lost my foothold.

5

P: For I envied the arrogant

C: when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

P: They have no struggles;

C: their bodies are healthy and strong.

P: They are free from the burdens common to man;

C: they are not plagued by human ills.

P: Therefore pride is their necklace;

C: they clothe themselves with violence.

P: From their callous hearts comes iniquity;

C: the evil conceits of their minds know no limits.

P: They scoff, and speak with malice;

C: in their arrogance they threaten oppression.

P: Their mouths lay claim to heaven,

C: and their tongues take possession of the earth.

P: Therefore their people turn to them

C: and drink up waters in abundance.

P: They say, "How can God know?

C: Does the Most High have knowledge?"

P: This is what the wicked are like—

C: always carefree, they increase in wealth.

P: Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure;

C: in vain have I washed my hands in innocence.

P: All day long I have been plagued;

C: I have been punished every morning.

P: If I had said, "I will speak thus,"

C: I would have betrayed your children.

P: When I tried to understand all this,

C: it was oppressive to me

P: till I entered the sanctuary of God;

C: then I understood their final destiny.

P: Surely you place them on slippery ground;

C: you cast them down to ruin.

P: How suddenly are they destroyed,

6

C: completely swept away by terrors!

P: As a dream when one awakes,

C: so when you arise, O Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.

P: When my heart was grieved

C: and my spirit embittered,

P: I was senseless and ignorant;

C: I was a brute beast before you.

P: Yet I am always with you;

C: you hold me by my right hand.

P: You guide me with your counsel,

C: and afterward you will take me into glory.

P: Whom have I in heaven but you?

C: And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

P: My flesh and my heart may fail,

C: but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

P: Those who are far from you will perish;

C: you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.

P: But as for me, it is good to be near God.

C: I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, forever more. Amen.

Passion History – Part 3 Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

A Responsory P: O Lord, have mercy upon us.

The Sermon Hymn: #422, “Come, Follow Me,” the Savior Spake

7

The Sermon – Mark 14:27-31 “You Will Disown Me” 27"You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written:

"'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.' 28But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." 29Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not." 30"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today-- yes, tonight-- before the rooster

crows twice you yourself will disown me three times." 31But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never

disown you." And all the others said the same.

We Bring Our Offerings The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord’s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry.

“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

II Corinthians 9:7 Please fill out the Friendship Register.

The Versicle P: Let my prayers rise before You as incense:

The Canticle Hymn: #48, “In Peace and Joy I Now Depart”

The Prayers, beginning with The Kyrie

8

The Lord’s Prayer

9

The Collect P: Abide with us, Lord, for it is toward evening and the day is far spent. Abide with us

and with Your whole Church. Abide with us in the end of the day, in the end of our life, and in the end of the world. Abide with us with Your grace and goodness, with Your holy Word and Sacrament, with Your strength and blessing. Abide with us when the night of affliction and temptation comes upon us, the night of fear and despair when death shall come. Abide with us and with all the faithful through time and eternity.

The Benedicamus P: Let us bless the Lord.

10

The Benediction P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the

Holy Spirit be with you all.

Adult Choir: “Lord, I Trust Thee” Lord, I trust thee, I adore thee. Ah! thou friend of man, restore me! On thy loving grace relying, For the bread of life I'm sighing. Quench my thirst and let my hunger cease, Fill my heart with joy and endless peace. When the breath of life has left me, May my soul be blended with thee. Thou hast promised not to leave me, How can any woe then harm me? Since thy word cannot be shaken, I will not then be forsaken. Strengthen, Lord, my weak and trembling heart, Let thy love and grace ne'er me depart— 'Til the host of heav'n receives me Evermore, my Lord, to praise thee.

To God be the Glory!

Lent

The season of Lent officially begins on Ash Wednesday. In Old Testament times, the Jews expressed their sorrow over sin by putting ashes on their heads. Ashes were a symbol of their own mortality and their sorrow over sin.

The season of Lent extends from Ash Wednesday until Easter. It is 40 days in length, not counting Sundays.

Lenten suppers will be served from 5:15-6:15PM every Wednesday during the Lenten season. We have awesome cooks in our congregation – come and enjoy the food and fellowship.

Join Us For Supper!

Midweek Lenten services are held Wednesdays at 6:30pm.

Lenten Services will be a rotation with ELS/WELS pastors.

The theme is
