It is somewhat of a coincidence that Pentecost and our Annual Meeting fall on the same day this year, namely, June 8th. In the book of Acts we learn that the frightened dis- ciples sat around inactively behind closed doors, afraid and bewildered. They were in for one more shock, but this shock was to fill them with courage and power to enact the things Jesus had taught them. This shock enabled them to unlock the door of the little room where they had been seeking security and spill out onto the streets of Jerusalem, proclaim- ing the Great News Jesus had given them to share with the entire world. I am excited about what God might have in store for us here at Danville Congregational Church. It is the beginning of a new church year. Our new leaders will be stepping up, our financial plans will be in order, our mission, to delight God, by stepping out of the shadows of life into the sunlit streets of our commu- nity, will come to fruition as we continue the quest to be the Body of Christ to the world. This is the year for our vision to grow into a plan of action that can unify us and show us what we can achieve when we stand together. I hope you will find purpose for your own path in this faith community in 2014/15. You and I are sur- rounded by people who care and who wish to make a difference. As we begin our new church year and the Season of Pentecost, I share with you that moving prayer of Je- sus for his disciples at the end of his life, according to the Gospel of John; “I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I de- sire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.(John 17:20-24) With that eternal prayer I am encouraged to invite you to embrace this new year in our church’s life as an empowered, Pentecost-driven, disciple of Christ. It is somewhat of a coincidence that Pentecost and our Annual Meeting fall on the same day this year, namely, June 8th.

In the book of Acts we learn that the frightened dis-ciples sat around inactively behind closed doors, afraid and bewildered. They were in for one more shock, but this shock was to fill them with courage and power to enact the things Jesus had taught them. This shock enabled them to unlock the door of the little room where they had been seeking security and spill out onto the streets of Jerusalem, proclaim-ing the Great News Jesus had given them to share with the entire world.

I am excited about what God might have in store for us here at Danville Congregational Church. It is the beginning of a new church year. Our new leaders will be stepping up, our financial plans will be in order, our mission, to delight God, by stepping out of the shadows of life into the sunlit streets of our commu-nity, will come to fruition as we continue the quest to be the Body of Christ to the world.

This is the year for our vision to grow into a plan of action that can unify us and show us what we can achieve when we stand together.

I hope you will find purpose for your own path in this faith community in 2014/15. You and I are sur-rounded by people who care and who wish to make a difference.

As we begin our new church year and the Season of Pentecost, I share with you that moving prayer of Je-sus for his disciples at the end of his life, according to the Gospel of John;

“I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory

that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I de-sire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17:20-24)

With that eternal prayer I am encouraged to invite you to embrace this new year in our church’s life as an empowered, Pentecost-driven, disciple of Christ.

From Tuesday, June 10, thorough Friday, August 29, the church office will operate on an abbreviated sum-mer schedule. Office hours will be:

Tuesday through Friday 9AM to 1PM

Our office manager, Lynda Manstrom, will still be work-ing a full schedule throughout the summer; this abbre-viated schedule will allow for necessary breaks while our Welcome Desk volunteers and office assistant, Kim Michaud, take the summer off. Please call ahead for any office needs outside of these office hours.

DCC’s Prayer Team

What is the Prayer Team? Very simply, we are a quiet and anonymous group of men and women within the church who carry concern and compassion for those in need of spiritual support and who commit to take those concerns to God in prayer: health issues, grief, concerns, gratitude, joy.

This ministry was begun 12 years ago and there are currently 35 of us. We each pray whenever and however we wish. A commitment to care and respond to needs when asked pretty much sums up our responsibility. Trusting that one's connections to the sacred are united with those of others forges a strong bond among us. We have no meetings and we communicate needs and concerns by e-mail most of the time. Requests for prayer are given through our DCC website, to Pastor Anton or to Nancy Hill who send them out to members of the Team. Requests also come through Diane Stein and deacons, and are welcome in person, by phone or by email.

Confidentiality is essential. We keep a very low profile and honor all concerns with utmost discretion. All requests for prayer are confidential unless offered during Sunday worship or permission to share information has been given.

How do you join the Prayer Team? If you would like to add your prayers to ours on a committed and confidential basis, please contact Anton, Nancy or any deacon. If e-mail is not an option for you, we are happy to accommodate you by phone or snail mail. How do you request prayers for yourself or others? Call or e-mail us and the word is spread immediately to the Team:

[email protected]; Pastor Anton, [email protected]; Nancy, [email protected].

“More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.” (Alfred Lord Tennyson)

From our Vice Moderator This has been an incredible journey over the last twelve months. It was an opportunity to learn the operating processes of DCC. Nearly every day was a new learning experience!

I especially appreciate the guidance and mentoring, as well as the experience and leadership talents of Anton and Syd during this year.

Thanks to each and every congregational member that has provided coaching/support/advice and counsel during my term as Vice Moderator.

Sincerely, Joy Grant

IT’S NOT TOO LATE… to help out your church and congrega-tion by answering the call to do God's work.

The DCC Annual Meeting will take place following worship on Sunday, June 8. All are invited to this important event as we re-view the past year and continue to plan the year ahead. New Deacons will be introduced to the congregation, we will recog-nize our graduates, the incom-ing slate of officers will be in-stalled, and the congregation will vote on the proposed budget for 2014-15.

Second Hour Schedule in June

June 1 Communion (No Second Hour) June 8 DCC Annual Meeting June 15 Father’s Day (No Second Hour) June 22 Conversations on Poverty, Social Jus-

tice and the Committee for Justice Min-istry – Doug Leich and friends will lead a three-part conversation including (1) what's happening with the new Multi-faith ACTION Coalition to confront poverty in Contra Costa County, (2) impressions and feedback on the recently concluded Len-ten Study Series on Social Justice, and (3) the new DCC Committee for Justice Min-istry - what, why and how.

June 29 Beyond Emancipation: Aging Out of Foster Care – led by Diane Stein and Carol Gerich

The DCC Committee for Justice Ministry There is a growing awareness and desire among DCC members to move beyond “outreach and be-nevolence” activities to a more active involvement in concerns of social justice. With our robust and de-manding menu of outreach and benevolence activi-ties, it has been difficult for the Outreach Commis-sion to devote adequate focus to the educating the congregation on social issues and opportunities for action component of their charge. In the final session of the 2014 Lenten Social Justice Study Group, the group recommended that we respond to this growing awareness and desire by forming a Committee for Justice Ministry to fulfill this charge.

The following proposal was presented and ap-proved by Council at the May Council meeting:

The Committee for Justice Ministry is established as an Ad Hoc Committee of the DCC Council to inves-tigate, prioritize, propose, educate about and enable possible justice ministries for DCC and its mem-bers. The Committee will work in coordination with the Outreach and Faith Journeys Commissions, and will report and make recommendations to Council and the Congregation as appropriate. It is expected

that, after it is established and functioning, the Com-mittee may propose a bylaws change to form a new and separate Justice Ministries Commission.

The Committee will be open to DCC Members and Friends as they choose to participate and meetings will be publicized in Good News, Weekly Wonder-ings, and Bulletin. First official meeting date of the committee will be announced soon.

Conveners: Trish Moosbrugger, Doug Leich and Dave Hill

Sister Parish Delegation News Delegation dates: September 29 – October 6, 2014 After much preparation and gathering of documents, all five Delegates from San Antonio, Quiche, Guate-mala have been granted visas to travel to the US. We are happy to introduce the Delegates to you in the next few issues of The Good News with a photo and a short biography, along with their hopes about their visit to our community. To learn more about Sister Parish, visit their website at www.sister-parish.org, and click here for a short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhxlo1iVT7s&list=PL379CEBD4168F7A0F Guadalupe Itzép Pasá de Sicá

I have 7 children: Maria Elizabeth, Gabriel, Federico, Felipe, Rolando, Miriam, and Javier. I have one grand-child named Allison and a son-in-law named Ottoniel.

My work is to take care of my family and to take care of

the house when the kids go to school and the rest of the family is out. I make sure the kids have food, clothes, and everything they need for school. I also raise chickens. In my free time, I participate in the church at prayer services, masses and meetings.

I am very happy with our sister parish relationship. 10 years ago I never would have dreamed of going

to the U.S. I have heard people talking about migra-tion and the problems. So many people from here have risked their lives to go. I never thought I would ever see the route they take or this place that so many speak of – the U.S. With all the work you are doing I will be able to see the U.S. and see where our brothers and sisters [from Danville Congrega-tional Church] are from. I will get to know your fami-lies, your environment and your church.

Thank you for all of your efforts to make this delega-tion happen. You have done so much. You have raised the money so that we can have these meet-ings to prepare for the delegation and so that we can make the long trip north. I don’t know if you know but we can barely pay for food for our families and edu-cation for our children, much less trips and travel. Thanks you so much for giving to our sister parish relationship and our movement here. I am very grateful. Thank you and God bless you. On behalf of my community and all the delegates traveling, we send you greetings in the name of God.

Also, thank you for choosing a time a year for the delegation when we will not die of cold. We see the snow plows on TV and all the snow.

Pedro Sicá Chicaj I am Guadalupe’s husband; we have the same children and grandchild. I work in agriculture. I am a campesino (subsistence farmer). I don’t have a formal profession. I harvest corn, wheat, beans and other food for our family. If there is ex-cess produce, we sell it on the market, but

right now it’s the opposite – we have to buy some things we need in the market.

I participate in the church. My job is to prepare the families, parents and children, for baptisms. I am also part of the church choir with my children and other youth. I am the Director. We want to take a short video of ourselves to share with you. I would love to have an exchange with the choir at DCC to share our knowledge and experience and our work in the church ministry.

My broader work is to defend the rights of indigenous peoples, including the defense of our territory and the natural resources in our territory. I am part of the

Historical Memory Collective. We also fight for jus-tice (there isn’t any in Guatemala).

I like to work in communications. I take pictures and video. I know a little about that. I also like carpentry and I do some work as a carpenter. That’s my work.

In terms of my hopes for the delegation, I agree with the women; I hope to establish and strengthen our relationship as sistering faith communities looking for solidarity. I hope to meet the choir and share our video with them, if we are allowed to bring it on the plane.

Habitat for Humanity Dedication in Walnut Creek – Saturday, June 7, 2014 - 10:00am

Ten families will have a new place to call home in downtown Walnut Creek thanks to the efforts of Hab-itat for Humanity volunteers, donors, and community partners. Danville Congregational Church contrib-uted over $2,500 to the All Faiths House, which is one of the ten new homes, and will be recognized with a DCC brick, among bricks for the two dozen other contributing Faith Partners. DCC hands helped build these new homes, through 34 volunteer-days of construction work at Faith Partner Build Days dur-ing the 16-month project. DCC builders were Rachel O’Neal, Leo Tseng, Kim Michaud, Joy Grant, Don Lenhardt, Richard Stein, Gretchen and Elizabeth Schmahl, Joyce and Fiona Klassen, Kyra Kennedy, Megan McGrath, Brett Clark, Jim Felton, Bob and Dottie Howell, Richard Lohmann, Marianne Clark and Doug Leich.

Join DCC friends at the dedication ceremony to help celebrate this accomplishment and welcome Habitat for Humanity’s newest Partner Families to the neigh-borhood.

Please RSVP at www.HabitatEBSV.org/RSVP so Habitat for Humanity can plan accordingly. But please come even if you didn’t RSVP.

Parking in the adjacent neighborhood is extremely limited. Additional parking is available at the Walnut Creek BART station (just a 5 minute walk from the development), and we encourage carpooling. Those interested in carpooling from DCC should plan to leave DCC by 9:30 AM. The dedication will be lo-cated at 1935 Barkley Avenue, Walnut Creek. Guests are also welcome to park at St. Paul's Epis-copal Church, 1924 Trinity Ave., Walnut Creek, CA, 94596 (about a 17 minute walk to the dedication).

June Godly Play Schedule

June 1 Family Worship – No Godly Play June 8 Pentecost June 15 Paul's Discovery June 22 Knowing Jesus in a New Way Part I June 29 Knowing Jesus in a New Way Part II

The “Magnificent Mentors Program” has been a great success! All of the “pairs” (Bob and Dottie Howell with Katie and Luci Beaver, John Klassen with David Marshall, Sylvia Martino with Kimi De-Barger-Gestring, Chris Rauen with Craig Seiler, Richard and Diane Stein with Madi and Mickey O’Neal), have been getting together, exchanging notes, searched for Easter Eggs and brunched to-gether at Jim and Bette Felton’s home, have sat to-gether during worship, attended sporting events (Chris came to watch Craig play DLL baseball one Saturday, then threw the ball/played catch with him). It’s been a great way to have another reason for go-ing to church or a church activity -- knowing that you’ve got a special friend waiting to be with you!

The “pairs” will be recognized at church on Sunday June 1. If you missed out on this first “M & M” event, we’ll do it again in the fall.

Joyful Nose/Noisy Joy

Mrs. Angela Borba Schmidt continues to corral the children to practice music during Second Hours. When they are not with Angela, the children are su-pervised playing in the Hope Center or on the bas-ketball/ inner court by Carrie Gaytan and one of her helpers (Fiona Klassen, Jenna Kawaguchi).

The monthly musical performances have been well received by the congregation. These performances have coincided with family worship Sundays.

All who have been involved in helping to raise the children of our church this past year will be recog-nized on either Sunday June 1. Personal notes with pictures from our Godly Play classrooms are being addressed and signed by Nan Karns from the Chil-dren’s Ministries commission. Wild flower seeds will be enclosed in all of the notes.

“Workshop of Wonders” themed Vacation Bible Camp is quickly coming! Mark your calendars for that fun week of August 4 - 8. Early enrollment is available now on the church web-site. The enrollment prices will increase after July 4. Hopefully this will encourage LOTS of campers to sign up soon! Lydia and the Children’s Ministries commission will be displaying VBC advertisements soon. There is already a poster on the bulletin board at Dayspring Preschool.

May began with Teacher Appreciation Week, and the staff was treated to an amazing Cinco de Mayo-themed luncheon by the Friends of Dayspring. We are so grateful for all of the talented, hardworking DCC folks who do so much for us! The children of Dayspring also enjoyed learning all about Cinco de Mayo through pinatas, sombreros, food, music and art. They continued their alphabet learning of letters Ss through Zz, learned about the character trait “I Am a Good Citizen,” and studied all about the theme “Are We There Yet?” They studied transportation and different types of vehicles for wa-ter, land, and air travel. Our vegetable and sensory gardens were carefully tended, so that our taste buds and other senses could be put to good use! The children also enjoyed Teddy Bear Day and mak-ing extra-special Mother's Day gifts for their very grateful moms. All of the classrooms continued making their beauti-ful, artistic creations for the Spring Fling Art Exhibit in Kairos Hall, May 21- May 25. The exhibit included both individual and collaborative works of art, of all types, colors, shapes and sizes. While the Spanish Enrichment Class has concluded for the year, our teachers continue to include Spanish and sign lan-guage in their daily lesson plans. Soccer, Music, and Dance classes continue through the end of the school year. Lesson plans in May included rhyming and dictation (language arts); ordering, patterning, sequencing, and spacial relationships (math); planting, flying pa-per airplanes, sailing boats, erupting volcanoes (sci-ence). We enjoyed learning about unicorns, unicy-cles, xylophones, weaving, and more! The children in Pre-K continued learning their site words and sim-ple math equations, and had a wonderful field trip to the Fire Station. We are always grateful to the fire-men for their hospitality and kindness to Dayspring children. Dayspring's fourth school year will end on Thursday, June 12, with a year-end program for Dayspring families that evening. In addition to presentations by each classroom, short presentations by our Dance and Music enrichment classes will be included for the first time! Dayspring's Summer Sessions will begin June 23.

What’s So Special about United Church of Christ Church Camps?

NCNC/UCC Camps are special because our singu-lar goal is to keep the ratio of campers to adults very low: about 3:1 for the youngest children, and less than 5:1 for teens. Our camps are staffed by volun-teer adults and teens who are active in local churches, take their own faith journey seriously, and look forward to being good friends and positive role models to campers.

We train our volunteers to be especially mindful of keeping campers physically, emotionally and spiritu-ally safe; to look for ways to constantly affirm each individual; to assist campers in staying engaged in the program; and to help keep the community run-ning smoothly and efficiently.

Children and youth participating in an NCNC/UCC summer camp will return not only with many new friends among peers, but with new friends who are caring adults.
